It's Valentine Day and we are on the way home. No problem with making reservations as we walked into a balloon decorated dining area. The Carlitos Diner restaurant was empty except for one occupied booth and the booth for the two of us. Gaby took our order of #2 crispy beef Taco & Chili Relleno plate for the lovely missus and the Ranchero Burrito for me. We marveled at the decor and paintings o the wall during the preparation of our food. The background music was not too loud and a reminder of our trip to Cancun. Ah, the plates were a colorful presentation and the taste of the Chili Relleno was a winner for the missus. My Chili Verde filling of the burrito had a good mix of pork and fluffy rice and just a little hint of beans. The green chili sauce was a good way to "wet" the top of the melted cheese on the burrito. Last Tuesday night we had a crisis of hunger! I suggested Carlito's or the Urgent Care we were so famished! Carlito's was the right choice. They were not busy at 6:15PM. We ordered Nachos and the Taco Tuesday special! The food appeared STAT! My girls was so happy with her Nachos. I tried to distract her so I could get a picture but she skillfully blocked me! I had I el pastor and two carne asada, plus rice and beans. Needless to say they were perfect and I inhaled them quickly. The ambiance is basic but comfortable, the room is light and bright. The service is like you are eating at your auntie's house. The food is terrific, the menu has all the diner classics and all the Mexican food you dream of. I came across Carlitos - I checked with my coworkers and they weren't familiar with it, so we figured it was probably new. I ordered a shredded beef crunch taco, with rice and beans, a side of chips and salsa, and a small guac. The small guac was tiny, but we figured it would give us a taste, and it was real tasty. Their chips were really good - light and crispy! The salsa was ok - not too spicy, and real tomato-y. We really enjoyed the crunchy taco. The shredded beef had a really good flavor. And the rice and beans were good too - definitely enough to share. Overall, our lunch was tasty - we took it 'to go'. But I do have to admit that I was surprised that nobody was in the restaurant and it was lunchtime - maybe most people take their food to-go - ?? This morning 11/16 My son picked up 2 menudos to go. Flavor was delicious. Sadly there was hardly any meat and very little hominy. Very disappointing. It was mainly soup. Several times we've been disappointed. Once my coffee was lukewarm, sent it back. She put it in the microwave instead of making a new pot. I could tell because lipstick smudged was on the cup. Had a delicious breakfast here today. Tried the 1/2 order of the biscuits and gravy... so much food even though it was a half order and it was delicious! Also got a side of hashbrowns that were all good. Staff was nice, food came out quick. First and last! Maybe I was there on an off day, but I am not going back. The waiter was a little off but that's fine, it was the food that was terrible. The first few chips were good but then they started to have a really odd taste like they were cooked in very old oil. Absolutely inedible. The two friends I was with ordered street tacos. They said the tacos were just okay. To me, the tacos looked like dried out happy hour style tacos. I ordered what has to be the worst turkey melt sandwich ever! It tasted like it was cooked in the same rancid oil as the chips. The turkey was terrible and tasted old. Not going back. I don't know where the five stars come from. read more

The decor was just okay, but my the waiter greeted me as soon as I entered the restaurant He told me that it would be a couple of minutes to take my order as he was working on a couple of phone orders at the moment. I appreciated the communication. I ordered the huevos rancheros (my favorite Mexican breakfast) and it was so delicious! This was the first time I had huevos rancheros with green chile and pork and I loved the change up from the usual red sauce. The beans and rice were tasty too. First and last time ever coming here. Service is a joke, non existent. If you look at my history of reviews, I have never left a bad one. Well, this place really made me do it. The menu says Coca Cola on it. I ordered a Coca Cola from the server. It tasted weird. I asked the server if it was Coke or Pepsi, she looked at me and said it's the same thing. I took a peek at the soda machine, it's Pepsi. She could have told me they didn't have Coke product. And yes, there is a difference. The portions were tiny. I'm not a big eater, but the rice was cold in the middle, they had to have microwaved it. The portions of beans I got were about a tablespoon and the rest all liquid. Disgusting. The chili relleno was a green chili with scrambled eggs on top and melted cheese. Wow. My 4 year old daughter can do better with play-doh. The shredded beef was not shredded, just chunks of meat and fat. Gross. The finale, when we first got sat, our server automatically brought us chips and salsa. When we got our bill, they charged us for it! I'm not cheap, I'll pay for anything. But to pay for chips and salsa that was complimentary brought over to us without asking? WOW! Why bring it out in the first place! The place was empty when we got here, and empty when we left. That should have been a clear sign to stay away. No AC and it was pretty hot inside. Light bulbs burned out and only 1 TV working out of the 2. This place won't last. It's on its last leg. Be aware and stay away. They don't care about great food or great service. read more

I am so happy to learn that this family owned restaurant opened a 2nd location in Fountain Valley! It is much closer to our home and definitely happy that they more of a dining place that serves alcohol. If you live in Fountain Valley, then I am super jealous you get to experience and eat here often! If you haven't tried this place, please support this small business!!! Their tacos, chimichanga, breakfast burritos, tamales are all sooo good!!!! I highly recommend their Tuesday Special! You can dine in and enjoy ordering some cocktails! They have beer, wine, margaritas and more that I forget but its made things a lot better so my husband can now have a beer with his meal. I said I would be back and I did, but this time, we called and placed pick up order. We got breakfast and it was so satisfying. We got 2 breakfast burritos: sausage and bacon, pancake, eggs, and bacon plate, and a large menudo & pozole (with pig's feet--don't judge lol, but I like it authentic like that) came with all of the toppings and extra lime! Reminds me of my MIL's and this is the closest I can get to it. Yumm! Oh we like their green and red salsa too. Everything was fresh and delicious. We really enjoy their food because it's simple, clean (not super greasy), flavorful, authentic tasting, and family owned and operated.
