Made a group order for lunch at work. The menu is extensive and have all the expected dishes of a Latin American restaurant. Portions were good with exception of the French fries side, they were on the smaller side. I ordered the Chicken Milanesa and though it was huge and with a lot of cheese I find it lacked sauce and flavor. I got the same feedback from my coworkers. We come here fairly often for dinner. We got the bread for the table but it was hard, cold, and stale. However, the rest of the food was relatively good. We ordered the ajiaco, the regular vaca frita, and the chicken vaca frita. The vaca fritas came with three sides and we got the same for each: rice, beans, and sweet plantains. It's a great amount of food. The rice and beans were absolutely delicious. The ajiaco and both vaca frita entrees were specials for Monday. The only other issue we had was that the chicken vaca frita felt like it was unseasoned, which was a first for us with this location. The service was quick and friendly. Baby Palomilla for the children with rice and French Fries respectively. The children ate the steak and they are picky eaters. That was a good sign. The food is not like Abuelitas! The black beans don't taste like what I am accustomed to, very little taste to them. The pork chunks had a bit too much fat, that grosses me out. Happy to find a place like this in my new neighborhood. It's one of those small hole in the wall types who never disappoint no matter what you get. Our favorite dish is the Vaca Frita which comes with rice and beans and Maduros. Always delicious. Always fresh. Chicken steak sandwich is also a favorite. We come for breakfast often. Their Tortilla de Platano is the perfect combination of savory and sweet. Pair that with their passion fruit juice and you will be glad you took my advice. I ordered THE "POTAJE DE LENTEJAS" for my son that had just been at dentist and can't eat solid food. I ordered the large one, thinking we could share. I was wrong. He ate it all. It was so good. My dad was recently visiting Miami and we were both in the mood for some good mofongo in the Kendall(ish) area and a friend of his suggested Caribe. Yes, we were "those" people but it is what it is. The server was extremely nice to us. She saw we were clearly trying to order as fast as possible to get out of their hair, but she assured us not to worry and to take our time. I was very excited when I ordered the mofongo w/ shrimp creole but when that thing came out of the kitchen, my jaw dropped. They literally brought out a chalice of mofongo stuffed to the very top. And the mofongo was delicious! It tasted very fresh, the chicharrones (pork rinds) were super crunchy and the shrimp were finger looking good. This was a perfect blend of taste and texture. My better half had Vaca Frita with house salad & Boniato Hervido (Pull beef with boil Cuban sweet potato $11.99) I had Cuban Sandwich Special ($7.99) with Cuban Tamal ($2.59) Tostones ($3.49) & Materva soda for the Cuban Sandwich ($1.49) and ended with one Cuban Coffee. The Tostones were Out Of This World, best we had for a LONG TIME. They come with the Garlic oil sauce. They were Crispy on the outside and soft inside & come with the Garlic sauce that make the perfect combination. The Cuban Tamal was in the same avenue. Today I'm one Happy Guy & specially having share it with my Better Half. The bad side is that when we arrive there was not parking space. I should've listened to the waitress! When I'm in the mood for comfort food, I recommend this place. Situated in West Miami-Dade near another famous restaurant (the name rhymes with Islas Canarias), it is one of the area's hidden bargains. The food isn't expensive and the portions are oversized. Daily specials are advertised prominetly in the menu with something different everyday. The wait staff makes sure you're satisfied with your choices and the managers circulate often to ensure everyone is happy with their meals. I recommend the "Fufu de Platano" (mashed plantains) served with a side of chicken consome and a choice of pork, or shrimp... Presented in a large wooden garlic masher (i don't know what else to call it) it makes a great side for your meal. Another perk of this place is that they deliver to both homes and businesses in the area as well as to FIU. Now the not so good - Service may take a while longer during their busy times, and they have run out of their specials (has happened to me more than once). Some of their waitresses don't speak english, and may need help translating for their non-hispanic clientele. At a time when all other restaurants are starting to change their menu to cater to more South American styles of cuisine, this is a great return to simple, authentic Caribbean cuisine done right.
