I have been living in NC for about 8 months now and have wanted good jamaican food. Carribean Hut was recommended. The food was just okay. I ordered the curry goat and cowfoot soup. The curry goat had lots of big bones and the meat could have been cooked a little longer. The cowfoot soup was pretty good and tasty but it did not have any meat. It had dumplings and vegetables. The waitress/bartender could have been a little more welcoming and interacting; especially since there was only two women at the bar eating. The waitress was dry the entire experience. Warm greeting on arrival is always appreciated. I love the decor in the location. They have been a staple in the community for the best of 20 years. They recently located within the same parking lot due to the new Aldi's taking over one side at the Terraces at University Place. The owners did a great revamp in a much larger space with flat screens tvs, graceful seating spaced out nicely and a huge bar. Came over to Caribbean Hut from Greensboro, NC for a friends birthday. The plan was to go to this spot. The night we went which was on Friday they had a DJ and he was pretty good. The music was there and the environment we loved! It was very well lit in there which I guess it needs to be because there is food served but I would have loved it if it was a bit dimmer. Also when we got there, their fire alarm was going off for a long time but they eventually got it handled, I'd say it took about 20 minutes or so. Me and my friends we all ordered food and drinks, the food took a little bit to come but as soon as I said, "dang where is the food" it came out, I think it's cooked fresh so that makes sense. The drink was okay but the food was amazing!!!!! I didn't get the memo about Carribean Hut relocating and renovating. On December 29 me, my sister, and best friend visited Carribean hut. The restaurant is located in the same parking lot that it was once in before the building was torn down but now they are in tbe strip mall that was behind it. The place really looks nice and sophisticated. They have a full bar area, ample seating, and the decor is amazing. I was totally shocked when I walked in. Originally, we were going to a different restaurant in that area. The service was fast and friendly. I ordered like a shrimp stir fry, my best friend had oxtails and my sister ordered chicken. We visited this restaurant after the Niners' 1st win of the season. We were promptly seated and taken care of by Fendee for the evening. Our drink orders were the Bob Marley for my wife and a spicy margarita created (on the fly) by the bartender with Scotch Bonnet peppers instead the classic jalapenos. It was excellent! Instead of cabbage, the lady informed me that they don't have cabbage but they have collard greens. It was a first for me, so I tried it anyway. Surprisingly, it was actually delicious! This review is overdue & a three-in-one. I was here on Friday, 01-13-23, Saturday, 02-11-23, and Saturday, 07-08-23. On Friday, I stopped by on a whim & decided to try the fish soup as it was cold outside. It was very good & filling. On Saturday, I had lunch with a friend & ordered butter shrimp; can't remember which drink I tried. In July, I'd been wanting to try their breakfast for a while. By the time I got there, only porridge was left. I'd just had wonderful Jamaican breakfast in Boston. I'll have to return on a Saturday to try everything else; the porridge was ok but not as good as what I had in Boston. My usual drink is the pineapple ginger. Very nice environment. You can tell the owner really loves this place. The waitstaff were attentive and very professional. They had that ability to show up exactly when needed, and not a moment before. The food presentation was wonderful. The food was very tasty. I had the Jerk Chicken. It was a perfect blend of sweet and spicy. The only issue I had, and the only reason I didn't give 5 stars, was with the chicken itself. Whoever had broken down the chicken had chopped through the bones, leaving shards of bone in every bite. It was a bit difficult having to pull bits of bone out of every bite. I've had plenty of Jerk Chicken in my life, and this was my only experience like this. I'll probably go back, but I doubt I'll order anything that might have bones. The tofu looked good. read more

This place is terrible. If you are new to Charlotte or not familiar with the area, please do not venture into this neighborhood. It's not safe. I ordered the shrimp roti and it was absolutely disgusting. The roti was hard and dry and there were about six pieces of shrimp in the dish. I have had roti as I'm from the East Coast but this by far was the worst Caribbean meal I have ever had. The service was also poor. The young girl behind the counter clearly did not want to be there and made that very clear. I expressed to the owner on my way out that the roti was subpar and asked if it was frozen. He told me that they ordered the roti from another location confirming my thoughts that it is not fresh. More than likely, they're ordering it in advance and freezing it. And its freezer burnt. They have 4 locations with two being here in Charlotte, one in Gastonia & the other in Clemson . Be sure when you go to try out their in house juices I fell in love with the Sorrel flavor which is a Jamaican flower, I'm obsessed with ginger and I could taste a lot of ginger in this drink .They have other juices in house such as sea moss & more . We lucked up and were able to try their famous curry shrimp with coconut milk and great balls of fire that dish alone sparked all my foodie needs for that day. They offer table service but I normally just get the food to go. I always get their ox tails cabbage and rice and peas and a beef/chicken patty. I think the beef patty is the best. Their food is always flavorful. The service is quick I don't think I have waited more than 20min to get my meal. There is parking available. The prices aren't that expensive especially with the portion amount they give you. The food definitely taste homemade. When ever I want good authentic Caribbean food this is the place to go. I love this place and I normally get the large ox tail dinner. This time I order the steam fish with rice and peas and plantains. They gave me an option of two fishes and I picked the red snapper. The fish was cook to order so I had to wait about 30 min, but it was worth the wait. The food was flavorful. Their was only one portion sizes for this meal. The fish was great.
