There are many opportunities for improvement at Carelon Rx. My first order was processed smoothly and arrived within two days of placing it. This was a transfer from CVS to CarelonRx. The initial experience was seamless, so I updated my pharmacy provider to Carelon Rx on my healthcare profile. The next order was sent directly from my physician to Carelon Rx. However, there was no validation of the shipping address. For mail order delivery, it's crucial to verify the delivery address for each order. Another area for enhancement is the delivery service. New prescription orders should ideally be shipped the next day, especially since this involves life-saving medication. Customer health and timely delivery are paramount. Refill orders could be shipped via standard service with measures to ensure the medication arrives before the previous supply runs out--perhaps a 1-week lead time for processing, though this could be adjusted. My most recent experience was lengthy, compounded by a national holiday. Yet each of the three representatives that assisted ensures they did their part to take initiative within their power to see me through to resolution. Thank you! read more

Terrible, terrible, terrible. Called Carelon to transfer two prescriptions, but they said they don't do that. They require a prescription from a doctor's office. This is ludicrious. It is a standard industry practice to transfer prescriptions between pharmacies. Now I am getting calls from Carelon that they can't reach my doctor for new prescriptions, and they are asking me to call my doctor. I secured a prescription when I saw my doctor a few months ago. Incompetent and annoying. Tried switching to them for mail order prescriptions some months ago. 'Chatted' online with presumably a human but most likely a bot. Was asked for my mailing address and provided it. Of course the scripts were not mailed to that address, were sent instead to an old address. 'Chatted' several subsequent times with bots and effectively fired Carelon, was assured I would receive no further communication from them. Stay away from this mail order pharmacy. Using them is not worth any savings offered by your insurance provider. Twice now we have waited over a month for prescriptions to be processed and delivered. The first time we thought it was a one-off mix up and after a month of my husband waiting for his Metformin to be approved by Carelon, we canceled and ordered through CVS and had it that afternoon. This last one was one of my meds ordered by my doctor in early August, was processed almost 2 weeks later and mailed on August 24th. It has been sitting on a pallet (Per Carelon) at the USPS facility in Indy since August 26th but for some reason will not be delivered to me until September 9th. By the time I receive it, it will have been a little over a month since it was ordered and 3 weeks I've been without this med. I wonder how this company stays in business. Worthless company. Was waiting for a package to arrive that they said they mailed out on June 5th. The USPS tracking # still shows that the USPS doesn't even have the package -- 10 days later. I literally ran out of the meds waiting for them and had to pay out of pocket to get the meds locally since Carelon already locked up the insurance payment for it. I chatted with someone using the online chat options and all they would do was keep cutting and pasting the same messages. No help with the actual problem. I then spoke with an agent earlier today and they're going to put me into the 're-ship' workflow. Guess what... it takes at least 3-5 days before the 'review board' will actually let the re-ship happen. That's on top of them already being a week late on delivering them initially. By the time they actually get through the review board and reship the meds and the time in transit, I will probably be a month behind on the meds. BTW -- I actually requested the filling of the prescription on 5/19 so they had PLENTY of time to get this filled and delivered. How can something this simple be this much hassle? These are prescriptions that people depend on for their health and wellbeing and Carelon can't be bothered. read more

I have been using Carelon Specialty Pharmacy for over a year for a medication I need to use every two weeks, and I want to share my experience to hopefully help others: I was prescribed a medication and was initially told there would be a change in my out-of-pocket cost due to copay assistance adjustments. I requested that the medication not be shipped until I could confirm the updated cost and ensure I could afford it. Despite that, the medication was shipped, and I was later billed approximately $1000. When I contacted both the specialty pharmacy and my insurance company, I was repeatedly transferred between Carelon and Anthem, with each side directing me back to the other, and there was no clear ownership of the issue. (I called to understand why I was shipped the medication even though I did not confirm the new cost. The result was being transferred literally 8 times over the span of an hour, only to be told I am at fault and that there is nothing they can do for me. It wasn't until I started bawling on the phone that the woman I spoke to did more digging to see what she could do. I eventually had an investigation opened, which came back with a letter that, in summary, said sorry for the inconvenience, but you are at fault, and there's nothing we can do.) Going back to actually getting my prescription, after significant effort and involvement from my physician, a coverage or processing issue was later resolved, and my subsequent refills of the same medication were processed at $0 out-of-pocket cost. However, the earlier charge was not reversed. The most frustrating part was the lack of clear communication and coordination between the pharmacy and the insurer, especially regarding patient financial responsibility before shipment. Patients should be given clear, confirmed out-of-pocket costs before specialty medications are shipped, not after. My advice if Carelon is unfortunately your only option: - Always request written confirmation of your final out-of-pocket cost before approving shipment of specialty medications - Explicitly ask the pharmacy to place a hard hold on the shipment until financial authorization is confirmed - Document every call (date, time, name, and reference number) - Do not rely on verbal confirmation of copay assistance coverage read more

I have in the process of a absolutely horrible experience trying to get prior authorization from CarelonRX for a medication that I have been on for a while now, and has been extremely effective for me. My doctors office has submitted required information a few times now that shows that I meet their clinical requirements for the medication. The prior authorization staff, process, and/or system seems to keep on screwing up and cannot find the information submitted, and they reject the request. I have been on the phone with CarelonRX and my doctors office at the same time, and CarelonRX still cannot get it done. Carelon sucks! I tried to find out why my refill wasn't refilled? I got their AI assistant. She was pleasant but couldn't understand my date of birth. I repeated 3 times & she couldn't understand my frustration even though I enunciated it very clearly. This is Maintenance medication I need to take for medical conditions I developed with time. I used to have Express Scripts when I was working. I thought they were pretty bad even though I was enrolled in worry free refills.Same problems. Atleast a real person answered the phone at Express Scripts. Carelon hides behind a computer. There isn't anyone I can talk to. I had to have my wife call on my behalf. My wife said if it was a person on the other end of the phone was a human they'd understand me? Not a computer. I pay for this plan through the ACA which costs me a $1000 a month. This is the service I get? Atrocious! They deserve a negative 5 stars. read more

This all started when I got a call from the infusion center that my appointment had to be postponed because insurance denied it. Before I could call back, the infusion center called and said it was good to go for my original time and scheduled me out for the rest of the year. 1 month later, the day before my appointment, I received the same call saying that it was denied. I called Carelon RX to find out what was going on. Carelon RX wanted to know if I had used some other company. I told them no, I have been going to the same place for 7 years. Carelon RX said they would resubmit the preauthorization request as an emergency. I didn't hear back and the next morning traveled 2 hours to my appointment only to find out that it had not been accepted. To make matters worse, it was a holiday weekend, so I could not get ahold of anyone. My only option was to go spend the day in the emergency room for a 30-minute infusion. I called them again the following Monday. Carelon RX said it was not accepted because it was not an "infusion center" (it literally has infusion center in the name). I told them that it is an infusion center with those specific words in the name, and they told me that it should be ok and that they would resubmit the preauthorization request. I was told it would be 3 to 5 business days for the approval. I called them back after the specified amount of time, and they said it was approved for my original infusion center, so I called the finance department from the infusion center to verify that they had received the approval. When they returned my call, they informed me that there was no approval for the original infusion center. I called Carelon RX back and was told they would submit it again with the same 3-5 business days. This approved/not approved back and forth continued for at least 4 more times with a different theory each time as to why it was no longer approved. I had to go to the emergency room for a second time to get my monthly infusion. This has been an absolute nightmare! I have repeatedly asked to speak to a manager or to someone that may know more than the representative on the phone and they refused to transfer me to anyone else. I have had to get my work personnel department involved and they are getting the same run around. All we have heard from them are possible theories, no actual reason why this infusion center is no longer an option. They refuse to give direct answers to any of our questions about why the original infusion center is no longer an option when there was no problem with it for 7 years. Before this started, I did not receive any notification that there was an issue with the infusion center I was going to or that I would have to choose a different one. I am 2 weeks from this happening again and it is still not resolved. read more

I was rejected for a claim I made about reimbursement for diabetes supplies. The rejection reason was that it was non-formulary, which was actually the whole reason I had sent the reimbursement claim in the first place. I was unaware that I needed a Prior Authorization for the medication and was not told so by CVS, my doctor, or Carelon Rx/Anthem Blue Cross. I was actually told by CVS that it was in fact covered by my insurance, despite the high price. I had been overpaying for the medication from Dec 2025, until July 2026, when I was finally alerted by CVS that insurance in fact wasn't covering it, and that I needed the PA. On a phone call with Carelon Rx I was initially told that the Prior Authorization was only retroactive for 1 month, but upon me explaining what happened I believe the person on the phone talked to someone higher up and that was extended so that I could send in my reimbursement claim, covering all the way back to Dec 2025. I provided all my details, dates, and prices, in that phone call for my file and was told a form would be sent to me, to fill it out, and send it in. After going through a complex process to fill out all the paperwork, with necessary signatures and information from CVS, I sent it in. It was then rejected due to the fact that it was non-formulary (needed a Prior Authorization) which had been the entire reason I had sent it in in the first place. On a second phone call with Carelon Rx, I was told it was only a month previous from the Prior Authorization that would be covered, which was not what I was told in my first phone call. I would not have then gone through all that had it in fact only been a month. I was explicitly told in my first phone call with Carelon Rx that the timeframe went back farther than one month and that I could send in a reimbursement claim. Overall, it's a few hundred dollars that could not be paid despite the fact that that feels to me like that is the right thing to do. If I was completely unaware I needed a PA, or was being given incorrect info by the pharmacy, it seems like I should be able then to have insurance cover something retroactively that it should've been covering in the first place. There's saving a few hundred dollars for a company and then there's doing what's right. It feels like they made the incorrect choice here. read more

MISERABLE EXPERIENCE. My doctor tried to fax a prescription to CarelonRX. The fax number they list on the website and mobile app is NOT a fax machine. Faxes sent to this number do not go through. We eventually obtained the correct fax number (after an incredible amount of time on the phone). I contacted Anthem/CarelonRX multiple times over the past month with a request to correct the website because I don't want this to happen to other people. Nothing happens! It takes forever to navigate through their interactive voice response system. When you finally get to a real human being, they are uncaring and unhelpful. CarelonRX's typical response to reviews on Yelp is "For patient privacy, please contact us at the phone number listed on your ID card." Don't bother with that! It's a waste of effort. read more

I would give it negative stars if possible. They are hard to get any prescriptions from. They have crap customer service. They put up road blocks to prevent actually prescribing anything. I can understand not covering a medication, but if it is covered and my doctor prescribed it to me, and they gave you the prescription then I should get the medicine. The I'm going to see if I can follow this up with my state's health department. They only thing the people in charge care about is money. They exhausted and over charged my cost savings card and then would not send my medication until I paid them $2290 out of pocket. This has been the worst. I live in the United States, and Anthem Blue Cross uses CarelonRx as its mail-order pharmacy. Unfortunately, I have never had a positive experience when contacting CarelonRx. When calling by landline, a representative--often located overseas--answers, collects personal information (name, date of birth, etc.), and then transfers the call. This transfer typically takes anywhere from 2 to 15 minutes before another person answers. At that point, the representative is usually based in the U.S. and working remotely. On several occasions, there has been noticeable background noise, such as household activity, or the representative speaks from a distance, which affects call quality. Recently, CarelonRx transitioned to a text messaging system. I requested that they contact my doctor's office to arrange a prescription refill, which is a standard service most pharmacies provide. After 35 minutes of texting with two different representatives--and providing my personal information twice--I was told I needed to be transferred via text again to a pharmacist. A customer should not have to spend 35 minutes to an hour on a simple request. Additionally, CarelonRx requires more than one refill remaining before allowing enrollment in auto-refill. This policy is inconvenient, particularly when prescriptions are written for 90 days and patients see their doctors every six months, typically resulting in only one refill. While my doctor has been willing to accommodate this requirement, the policy is not practical and has caused issues in the past. Finally, I have automatic billing set up on my credit card for every order. Despite this, I receive a bill with each shipment indicating an amount due. When I check my account, the charge has already been processed. This is confusing and unnecessary; the documentation should clearly indicate that the balance has been paid. I have attempted to resolve these issues by phone but have since given up due to the inefficiency of the process. It is unfortunate that Anthem continues to use CarelonRx when there are more reliable and customer-friendly pharmacy options available. read more

Absolutely Horrible experience! I would give them 5 Negative Stars if I could. There is also not enough space here for me to rant about this mail order service that Anthem has partnered with, but I refuse to use them anymore. I figure that my husband and I have spent DAYS on the phone with Carelon over the last 2 years, with a multitude of issues. We have literally paid for their screw-ups because if your doctor sends in a script, they will fill it and when they send something to you, even by accident, you will pay. And then they will re-fill it, and you - pay. When you try to get help, you will discover that the incompetence (and sometimes outright rudeness) of their customer service is astounding. Back in April 2025, we told a representative at Carelon to not only Cancel a prescription, but that we didn't want to receive ANY more prescriptions from them. Then today, we just got a refill that we didn't request, along with a bill. We just got off the phone about it and were told that CANCELLING a prescription is different than DEACTIVATING it and that we received this refill because we hadn't used the correct term back in April. (What part of "we don't want Any prescription meds from Carelon" did the representative not get?) Believe me, and to be very clear, we have now "deactivated" everything we possibly could! Because Carelon dropped the ball on following up with my prescriber and getting my seizure meds to me on time, despite my many calls, I ran out of the medication for several days and have now broken my almost 3-yr. seizure free record. If I could rate this company less than zero, I would. I have had so many issues with Carelon Rx since they became Anthem's mail order pharmacy, beginning in January 2024 when they took over Anthem's pharmacy delivery to Arkansas but failed to inform their customers (did Anthem even know?) that they weren't yet licensed to deliver to the state of Arkansas! I spent 3-4 wks, hrs and hrs on the chat feature and on phone calls with them (where I was given numerous...and differing...reasons for why my meds weren't being refilled), and finally a 4 1/2 HOUR call (80% of which was spent on hold); the culmination of that call was me losing my composure when I was informed that the reason my meds were delayed was because they didn't have authorization to delivery medications to my state yet! Keep in mind, that we were into the late middle of February at this point! It would be the middle of the summer before they got their license! Yes, I filed a complaint with the AR Board of Pharmacy, but that went nowhere. Their big time lawyer did his lawyer thing. He lied and said that they had notified customers about the issue; if that were the case, then why did no one at my husband's place of work, including their HR dept at headquarters in Colorado, know anything about it? He also turned it around on me and said that he suspected the real issue was that I was upset that I was "inconvenienced" by having to drive to pick up my medications! I literally live 2 miles from my LOCALLY OWNED pharmacy that I would much prefer to be able to give my business to! On another note, for a company its size, their app is horrible; it is very confusing and doesn't accurately display active prescriptions which can make it difficult to understand what meds you actually have refills for! If I had a choice, I would never use CarelonRx, and I wish that Anthem BCBS cared enough about its clients to not use them. However, I realize that it all comes down to money for them too! read more

Horrible experience. Have been paying my provider's invoices for the past 4 years. The invoices were mailed to them. The last invoice was mailed 3 times (each time they claimed they did not receive it), the last one was mailed certified mail. At first their rep said they did not receive it. Then they said it has been rejected, but ...has been appealed (by whom?) and it is now under a review, which will last 30 days. In short, they do everything not to pay the invoice. This is my story. Unfortunately, this is the only mail-order pharmacy my Anthem insurance accepts, so my doctor resent my prescription to Carelon on 6/26/25. The prescription was JUST received by USPS today, 7/1/25, so I called the company for a tracking update. The estimated delivery date is 7/7/25. If you have the luxury of waiting nearly 3 WEEKS to start a medication, then this pharmacy might work for you. If not, go elsewhere. read more
