The oxtails were horrible. It tasted like vinegar - I think they were spoiled. The oxtails were tiny, mostly bone and fat and barely any meat. I never wast food but I could only eat a few bites and threw out the rest. The rice and peas were dry, barely any beans and the cabbage was just "ok". I also tried the curry chicken - the flavor was very good but it was too salty. I am always supporting black owned businesses and used to love stopping here on my way home from Philly. I recently visited Careda's and ordered the curry chicken platter with cabbage, rice and peas, and plantain. Came from out of state and feel like I wasted my money here. Unfortunately, the service left much to be desired. The staff seemed in a rush; though they were not busy (I was the only one in line at the time) and didn't listen to my order properly. They started making my plate before I could finish explaining what I wanted. Their menu clearly states that every platter comes with rice and peas, but because they were not listening and rushing, my order was initially incorrect. They fixed it quickly, but not before blaming me for their mistake, which was frustrating. As for the food, it was okay--nothing great. My main issue was that instead of getting proper pieces of chicken, I ended up with a lot of bones and fat, which is simply not acceptable. Overall, I wouldn't recommend. I would like to start with I'm a big supporter of my black owned businesses. And I'm always looking for new places. Staff was nice. The lady that took my order was very friendly. The food though. First of all I ordered the $16 platter. I was asked what rice i wanted. And what else so when I said cabbage I assumed there would be two sides. But the rice went into the main portion and a side pocket. Fish was $5 a piece so I chose not for one piece. Ended up getting the chicken stew rice and peas and cabbage. Cabbage was unflavored and was kinda still hard. The chicken was in a sweet gravy. The rice and peas was okay But Chicken tasted like rubber. I would smell the food from the lid spot as soon as I turned the corner in their aisle. One Quick Look at the menu and I decided on oxtails with cabbage and rice. Wait time was pretty brief. There were 2 customers ahead of me and so at lost 5-7 minutes wait time for our bag. All of the seating was mobbed with people so we ate it back in our room. First impression, the oxtails were super tender and the sauce was flavorful. At some point it was just easier to eat the oxtail with my hands. There's really no easy way lol. I stopped at Caredas today while I was in Reading Terminal and paid $16 for a Curried Goat platter. When I opened it I was surprised and pissed off to see that every piece of "goat" in my platter was either fat or bone. Absolutely no goat meat found in the platter. I've attached photos. It's a shame because I always want to support small black business owners. But when you serve stuff like this, it's makes it really hard. If this is the only goat meat you can get, maybe you should take it off the menu. It's insane I paid $16 for rice and cabbage! I also didn't take any curry in the gravy either. It tasted like regular brown gravy and was very oily. The rice and peas were hard. Almost as if I served reheated leftovers. The only thing I actually enjoyed was the cabbage. Please do better. This is one of the newer restaurants in Reading Terminal, and I avoided it for a while because I'm a big ol' cheapskate who tries to keep my meals from Market restaurants around the $10 mark. Things more or less start around $12 here, and so I just sent an occasional longing glance at the menu when I'd pass by. But I was in the other day, ravenously hungry, and plans to get brunch at City Winery had just fallen through. I figured I'd have spent considerably more on brunch, so justified finally trying out Careda's. Now that we have the psychology of where I eat out of the way: This was some delicious food. I got a jerk pork platter with beans and rice and cabbage and each part of the meal hit the spot. The pork came in chops rather than shredded, but it was tender and well seasoned, with an excellent spice level. The cabbage was perfect in flavor, as a compliment to the pork, and in portion size. And then the red beans and rice were red beans and rice, but that's not to say they weren't spot on. The meal came with a sauce of my choice - I got the hot sauce, but in retrospect would have tried something that brought a different flavor to the mix since the meal itself had sufficient spice and the sauce didn't stand out a ton, but that was on me. I see that some people had issues with the service or their food's temperatures and little things like that. I didn't have any such issues - I didn't require the most in-depth service, and while what I got wasn't amazing, it was neutral at worst. I don't know how often I'll be going here, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited to try their jerk salmon some time. read more

My grandma and I had a conversation about jerk chicken earlier in the day, so when I saw Careda's I thought it was a sign that I should give the place a try. I ordered a jerk chicken platter, which came with rice & peas, and greens or cabbage. I went with greens over cabbage. The woman who took my order was so pleasant and the service was very fast. I received the platter, paid and went on my way. I delivered the food to my grandma and she texted to tell me everything was cooked perfectly. She really enjoyed the platter and that's rare bc she is super picky. I would like to thank Careda's for a great experience. I will return to try a platter to two soon. read more

After walking from Fairmount to Rittenhouse and then over to Reading Terminal Market, I had worked up an appetite. I wasn't sure what I was in the mood for so I perused up and down each aisle zigzagging my way through hoards of tourists. I have been to Reading Terminal Market many times over the years and am pretty familiar with the selection, but then came across a Caribbean restaurant I hadn't noticed before. I have been a big fan of Caribbean food since my trip to Jamaica in 2010. It is where I first had goat, which ha become my favorite protein. So when I saw they had Curried Goat on the menu, I couldn't resist. It didn't hurt that the guy standing next to me in line said they made the best goat. So, I ordered the goat which came with rice, peas, and cabbage. I also love a mixture of sweet and savory so I got a side of sweet plantains. I opted for the $1 add on, rather than the $3.50 side and it was more than enough for one person. The service was great and within minutes I had my meal! The goat was perfectly cooked and tender and falling right off the bone. Everything was well seasoned and the plantains added that perfect touch of sweetness I was looking for. I def want to come back and try some of their other dishes, but I'm not sure I'll be able to pass up on that goat! read more

This review is based off of my last 2 visits. I came last month and LOVED my jerk chicken platter. It came with a great serving of chicken, rice with peas, pickled cabbage, and plantains. My 1st visit was fantastic and I was in love. Yesterday, during my 2nd visit, it was a different experience. The jerk chicken had a different flavor, not as strong as last time. There was also less chicken overall. The plantains were cold! I was very disappointed. The rice was still yummy, but the peas had been over cooked so they were very dry. I'm hoping it was an off day, I'll visit again next time I'm in Philly. read more

I was able to substitute the rice with veggies. The food is served in styrofoam container and the broth is leaking to the bag. They don't have rum cake although it's printed on the menu. That was disappointing. That's why I took a star down. Chicken is so tender and fall off the bones. Plantains are perfectly cooked, not greasy. The veggies has some kick to it. I ordered a 1 chicken and 1 beef pattie to test which is better. While the chicken pattie is good, the beef pattie wins all day, the ground beef is spicy and well seasoned and the crust on the patties has a nice light brown color with a nice crispness on every bite. I would defined get a fee of the beef patties next time i am in the area as they make a quick delicious snack anytime! read more

Food was very good, jerk chicken (because I was not able to get any over the weekend ) Outstanding favor one of the best I've had in a while. Cabbage was awesome, plantains were ok! Hubby had Oxtails, he reports extremely tender, great favor, rice & beans let's just say he still smiling! Their version of sweet tea he reports was wonderful and he wish he knew what they put in it!!! Two reason for the 3 Star rating although the cabbage was smoking hot the other food was not. Luke warm! I enjoyed my jerk chicken platter from Careda's in Reading terminal market. The chicken was warm and juicy. The meat fell of the bones. The rice and peas were hearty and not too sticky or soft. And the greens were just the right kind of sour and wet but not watery. The flavors mixed together really well and I ate the entire platter somehow even though it was a lot of food! Got the meatball platter that came with about 5 meatballs, some veggies and rice. There was way more rice than rice to meatball ratio so ended up wasting a good amount of the rice. Visited here on a busy weekend. My husband and I each got the escovitch fish with rice and peas, cabbage and plantains. The good: nice sized snapper, fried to order, with tasty onions etc. The cabbage and plantains were pretty good. The portion was reasonable. It wasn't a gigantic portion, so if you don't like it, you won't get stuck eating from the same platter for 3 days as with other places. Also, the girls serving the food were patient, pleasant and polite. The not so great: some of the food was lacking in flavor. The fish was good but maybe needed more seasoning or to be marinated longer. The rice was the right consistency and color, but needed some thyme, coconut milk etc. The portion was reasonable. Yes, I know I said this above, but if you happen to really like the food you probably won't have lots left over for the next day, or to share. They didn't have mac and cheese, at least not the day I went. I would've really liked to try it if they did. Jamaican spots are known for terrible service but make up for it with great food. This place just had terrible service and terrible food. How did I spend $16 for "oxtail" that was tough, under seasoned, and tasted more like honey bbq than actual oxtail. I ordered 2 platters, one with curried goat, rice and beans and cabbage and the other with oxtail, rice and beans and mixed veggies. I understand that meat is expensive and you can't pile meat on every platter, but it was a complete waste of money for me to buy a goat platter with only 6 tiny(I mean extra tiny) pieces of meat or with 4 tiny pieces of oxtail(extra tiny) and both had majority sauce. It was as if my platters had the left over scraps from the bottom of the pot after everyone else had eaten. My total came to over $30 for both platters and it was a complete waste of money. Service: The young girl that took me and my friend's order was super nice! I asked questions and she answered them without any problems. I'll give them an additional star just because she was so amazing. Keep up the good customer service!!! However, the older lady that prepared the food had a nasty attitude. Today (5/2, noon), I got the Jerked Chicken Platter. Upon opening the clamshell, there was NO, repeat, NO chicken. At first, I thought it must be under the brown rice, nope. Not under the black eye peas, not under the cabbage. Then, to be charitable, I wondered if it was shredded, and in the gravy.
