I enjoyed a veggie taco at this supermarket's grocery market. I enjoyed the beans, guacamole, cheese, and rice in the taco. The lime on the side made the taco taste more delicious. The taco only cost $1.49 which is reasonable. On the cafe's menu, it said the taco cost $2.49, so I unexpectedly saved money. Maybe I saved money because the taco was veggie?! The service was a little slow, but still decent. The ambiance is comfortable. They played Mexican music in the background. I recommend this place if you want to get tacos with reasonable service! read more

Grading slightly on a curve as I am comparing it to the Oakland location. Quality/Quantity - So glad I discovered this location. As the Oakland location was getting less and less safe. The Oakland location is not just unsafe, but driving there consists of VERY aggressive drivers. Okay, now to this location. Easy in and out. Well stocked, a much better location than the one I frequent in Oakland. I now have to have the app and they are also using digital coupons similar to many of their competitors. But this brand so far has had 100% of the free weekly item in stock; wow and thank you. This will be the first time I try corn and flour tortillas in one?!?! Atmosphere - Huge, clean, and organized location. Has all the departments - Bakery, deli, tortilla, meat, seafood, cheese, and fresh ripe produce. Limited mall parking due to the many high volume businesses. Need a code for the restroom - 2010. Amazon lockers, coin collection machine, etc. The best part is that this location is in between the Business and Regular Costco! So now I do NOT have to go to the San Leandro Costco anymore, which has also gone downhill. SL Costco's review to follow... Service - N/A, they even have self-service check-outs at this location! But I chose to go through a regular full service check stand and had no problems. Price - Inexpensive! Thank you. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1981 (1998 in NV and AZ) with your 56 locations. Just realized that KKR bought you in 2017. We have been shopping this brand since it was Mi Pueblo Supermarket. In 2016, KKR bought Mi Pueblo and Cardenas and in 2017; they merged the supermarkets together, getting rid of the Mi Pueblo brand. Actually, the founder of Mi Pueblo, Juvenal Chavez, has a very inspiring story about how he started and finished with the $300M company. Sadly, he then went into bankruptcy in 2013. read more

Came here over the weekend and it was busy as expected. Including the parking lot which good thing they have a good amount of it. I like how their store seems to be always clean and organized. There's always something I find deals on. Their produce section is always fresh and plentiful. Their plenty items are always stocked. The workers are all friendly. My Spanish is very rusty. And even tho I came across two who weren't fluent in English, they attempted to find someone who did. Thats still considered good service. read more

Place was super busy, I had to wait 30min for them to call my number out. The sales were ..... as you can see in the picture below !! I have never seen a sign like this in my life. But I guess you still save a penny ! Not sure what they are going to do when they stop producing pennies. Maybe they will be forced to take a loss of a nickel instead of a penny read more

Cardenas Markets - I SAVED A WHOLE PENNY !!! Really ???? - Mexican Near Me - Hayward, California

The only reason I go here is for meat and produce, and once in a while, groceries. I've only eaten at the taqueria once, and it was OK. But the produce is always good - good pricing, OK selection, and much better quality than you find at Lucky's or Safeway. Their meat/fish department is also great - good selection, good pricing, helpful butchers. The meat department does get pretty busy, so you usually have to wait for someone to help you, but they always seem happy to help. If you're buying something by weight, there's none of the messing around with "Oops - I cut it a little over..." - if it's more than you wanted, they're perfectly willing to trim it down or offer you a different piece. Even if you're a gringo, they'll give you the good pieces, instead of trying to pawn off the pieces that no one wants because they're old, all bone, or all fat. The one thing that I do miss is that, when Mi Pueblo was here, during the summer they used to grill chickens out in the parking lot. Yeah, they were more expensive than the $5 Costco Rotisserie Chicken, but wow, they were tasty! Unlike some of the smaller Mexican markets, just about all the workers who have customer contact are bilingual and willing to help. No pantomiming or sign language needed! No ordering three pieces of chicken and having the meat guy try to give you 3 kilos... Anyway, all my experiences here have been great - good stuff at a decent price from friendly, helpful staff! read more

Today while shopping here, I witnessed an unsanitary situation that discouraged me from buying food at this store. In one of the aisles, a woman had a small dog on a leash. The dog was low enough to be inside the bottom shelves and was rubbing its backside directly on food items. The woman stood there and waited for the dog to finish, blocking the aisle. I had to say "excuse me" just to get by. When I informed her what her dog was doing, she brushed it off. Concerned about sanitation, I went to self-checkout and asked an employee if there was a manager I could speak with. She pointed to a man standing next to her. I explained the situation to him, but he did not respond verbally at all--he just stood there smiling. I had to ask if he was even listening. His response was, "You're talking and I'm listening," followed by continued silence and smiling. When I repeated that a dog had rubbed its private areas on food in the produce/food section, he made a dismissive comment to the employee next to him instead of addressing me directly stating, "first she said food section and now she's saying produce section." Regardless of wording, food is food, and this is a serious health concern. I asked if he was the manager and what his name was. He said his name was Douglas and clarified he was a supervisor, not a manager, even though he had been pointed out as such and never corrected it initially. When I asked if a manager was on site, he said he didn't know. Throughout the entire interaction, he continued to smile and gave no indication that the issue would be addressed. Later, another employee directed me to an assistant manager near the front of the store (wearing a pink shirt). She was professional, listened carefully, and said she would look into the situation and speak with Douglas. I appreciated her response. I try to support Latino-owned businesses, even when prices are higher, but situations like this make it very difficult. Food safety concerns should always be taken seriously, and customer service matters. I hope Douglas receives proper customer service training, because his response--or lack of one--was inappropriate for a situation involving sanitation. Shoppers should be aware, especially when purchasing items from lower shelves in the produce or food sections. read more

Making tamales for the 1st time and was advised by the butcher to purchase the packaged pork loin. When I opened a couple of days later, the meat had a bad smell...like it was outdated but the date on the package was not. Maybe the meat sat out of a refrigerator and that's why it smelled bad. Long story short...ruined the whole experience for my 1st time preparing tamales. Food wasn't what it used to be. Service was rude a s horrible. People ignored you, and they had attitudes. We bought some dinner plates, the guy was loke struggling, giving like the smallest scoops. The tortillas were so gross falling apart. Then I asked the lady for salsa, and she said, "You have to buy it." i only wanted a tiny cup with it. I also saw they had empanadas with custard inside, I was excited, then bought them and brought then home just to find out that they almost had no cream inside, I put more tooth paste on my brush than they do inside the empanadas. I hope they fix things and go back to how they use to be, and this experiences, seem to be happening in most of their store. Had similar experience in Palo Alto. It's so sad. R read more

How are you gonna serve very mid food and have HORRIBLE SERVICE. I stood at the counter to order and watched the two ladies serve people without even acknowledging me. It took a customer to say "she was before me" for me to get service. After she made my burrito, she put it on the counter and walked away to help another person. In which I also watched her help him and check him out. I then asked her why didnt she check me out instead of making me wait in line at the other register. She said ,"one side was for food". I then watched her help the next customer, make their plate of FOOD and then proceed to check the customer out. She lied!!! I didnt say anything but I noted to NEVER spend my money in this store again...horrible experience!!! read more

This place has the worst food quality taste in Mexican food dishes. They look ok but when you eat it it's something that barely has any flavor or taste. The groceries are thru the roo in pricing. Even a gas station beats there price on a red bull or any drink. The quality on produce suck perhaps because of the high prices on them too. I will never understand why on earth would they even design 6 cash register sections and block off 4 with monster energy drink fridge machines blocking each one of those 4 cash register's. So only 2 cash register lines are open and that there create 2 big lines that have people in the aisles waiting for a really long time in line and in the way of other customers passing through and it's just a mess. Again don't understand why the staff here careless about that inconvenience and long boring lines just to pay. read more

So much fat had to be trimmed and the staff wants to argue and fight with you if you ask for the meat they so nicely display. It's a lie. They don't want to sell you the nice pieces. On 7/14/24 I came in to order a birthday cake, the lady in the bakery told me no English, I am Mexican but don't speak the language (born in California) I'm asking her if someone speaks English, she walks around and finally after 15 minutes this lady comes I'm telling her I want a white cake with vanilla filling and pink and purple roses, I specifically told her No tres leches cake (twice). I picked up the cake Saturday 7/16 I looked at it it was decorated nice, get to the restaurant when time to cut it I noticed the pan on the bottom, sliced it it was tres leches, I was so disappointed and so was my daughter, I don't like this type of cake, and a lot of our guests didn't either I threw away more than half of this quarter sheet cake, I don't understand how you can run a store with so many diverse people shopping and they don't understand English, I shouldn't have to speak Spanish to order a cake, I will never order a cake from them again, your employees should learn some English if they live and work here, I spent over 40 minutes ordering a cake that I was so disappointed. read more

So disappointed, it's been almost a year since my last shopping trip there , since I was in the area today I decided to give them an other try , just maybe things had change since last time .... It is nice & clean & organice more so then my last visit , but service is so bad @ not enough staff , staff in the ready made food was slow, confused & not well trained ... even the taco maker was slow & not really paying attention to orders . The Chicharones I purchased were burn & stale , the Pan dulce was not very fresh , worst stale churros , tamales were not fresh . Fresh produce were a good assortment & looked good & butcher section was clean & good cuts of meat , but one lonely butcher for a line of 17 people ... cashiers were not friendly and had no idea were items were and did not bother to ask someone to help look ! There are plenty of other Mexican markets in the area, I wont be returning or recommend it to friends ... read more

I have never had a Mexican Breakfast Burrito made by Oscar Meyer. Imagine the surprise when you're expecting fresh spicy chorizo and eggs, potatoes, tomatoes and cheese and sour cream with guacamole wrapped in a warm flour tortilla... and you get a tortilla with a sliced hot dog tossed in with overcooked tasteless eggs and some refried beans with salsa. Nowhere on the menu is Tube Steak mentioned. It was a disgusting culinary discovery that I wont partake in ever again. Ronald Donald has a more authentic Breakfast Burrito than Cardenas. Well, enough is enough. The restaurant section of Cardenas in Hayward are always super RUDE! Is like we are interrupting there time. Take so long to get just a plate of what ever they have there. Food was really good before now has no flavor. At times to greasy and to add to this unprofessional and not costumer service orientation at the restaurant counter section. My self and 6 other people waiting to get a plate for lunch. But 4 employees cut in front of us and they got their meals 1st. I understand that they have a certain amount of time to eat , but there is no reason all 4 should take there lunch at the same time specially when there are costumers also of a fixed time to get something to eat before going back to work. Costumer Service is not there. A lot of attitude and rudeness from every worker at the food counter. Even for a question they get irritated. Please train your workers to be friendly or you will loose costumers. For now you lost my business. I have to travel 2 miles more to get a more decent service. read more

Also they meat guy they asked about getting the ham pieces cut smaller and he answered very rudely too . Also cashiers . It's like all of them hate their job . Very negative vibes from every employee.Everyone that works here is RUDE . I've never felt so disrespected by the management in this establishment. What an embarrassment of establishment and a disgrace to the hard work that Latinos are known for. This is anything but that. The dishonesty, no customer service and dirtiness of this place was astounding. I was massively ripped off when I went in for a small the 3 leches cake. $40 dollars for a "cake" that was drowning in cream that the cake itself was literally wet and soggy. The inside was ALL cream to make the cake look bigger than it was. If I wanted to buy cream and icing I would of gotten that. This was soup of 3 leches. Not tasty and just a disgusting presentation and a joke to what an actual 3 leches cake is. I also purchased a flower bouquet. When I got home to put them in a vase all the plants were full of mold and bugs. GROSS! I went back the next day in hopes I could exchange the flowers and complain to the bakery for the rip off of soup they sold me for a cake. I was directed to the manager and he brushed me off and walked away after saying that it's not his problem that I don't check what I purchase. Um what?! Are you serious? And walking away from me as I was talking? I am so upset and will never ever recommend this place to anyone. I feel so embarrassed for non Latino shoppers that come in here looking for authentic Latin/Mexican food and they're greeted with this. They don't know better and will now think this is the standard... what an insult. Will never come back here and wish I could put negative stars. read more

I use to frequent the Mi Pueblo chains and then when it become Cardenas I have noticed a the less glamorous ambiance of the store. It's become rustic than neatly organized shop. It's always great to have a grocery store in the area but the interior atmosphere does affect the costumer experience- ie your trader joe's vs grocery outlet. The meat and salsa bar area is definitely organized and the meat is perfectly organized. When it comes to the prepared food section it was lacking. We ordered the tripas, carnitas and al pastor. Granted it was during the pandemic time period, no food can be seen cooked. Most of the food was in the hot plate are. The al pastor and carnitas were lacking in texture. They were finely chopped and not what I'm used to as the chunky hunky pieces--tasted more of grounded meat. I'll consider trying their meats another time but if it's still grounded I might pass. There's plenty of other taco options. Perk- Convenient to place to order dinner and grocery shop all in one. read more

I used to frequent this grocery store when it was called Mi Pueblo. However, I agree with the other reviews that this store has declined since becoming Cardenas Markets. They still carry some hard to find items for my homemade Mexican dishes so I'm still in need to shop here on occasion. The most notable change to me is the selection and quality of their pan dulce (Mexican Sweet bread). The pan dulce was way better when Mi Pueblo baked it. read more

My elderly grandfather went to get 1 burrito from them. He forgot his card and went back. When he went back he saw they had charged his card $35. The cashier also had his card in her pocket instead of giving it to management. In addition, they tried to tell my grandpa it was his fault for leaving the card in and that other customers were charging it. Obviously this wasn't the case because they decided to put it in their pocket. They tried to not refund his card and he was in a rush because my sick grandmother was in the car. I love coming here on Taco Tuesdays!! Their tacos on Tuesdays are only $1.25!!! Where else can you get such cheap tacos in the Bay Area now a days??? Don't get me wrong now, even tho the tacos are only $1.25, the deli ladies DO NOT skimp on the meats that they pile on top of the tortilla. I think there's over 6-8 selections of meats you can choose from for your tacos, they also give you the option if you want cilantro, onion, salsa and lime. I usually get a medium horchata and 4-8 carne asada, al pastor and chicken tacos depending on how hungry I am. If I get 8 tacos, I split it into two meals and save the other 4 for later. Totally worth it. If you come in the day time, the line is shorter but the line is usually longer at night since it's $1.25 tacos!! I dream about coming here every week.
