I had a wonderful lunch at Carbón two weeks ago. We arrived at 2:30, were seated promptly and served water and cocktails right away at a comfortable table on the main floor of the dining room. The overall standout dishes were the artichokes (you will want one per person, or maybe two-- the entire thing is edible, no need to pluck and dip), tiny grilled lamb chops (the smaller, the better), the bread and smoked butter, and the pistachio ice cream (we are all still talking about all of these). We shared several other starters (buñuelos with a great sauce, I remember, and a terrine that was really good, and a mixed salad) and all were excellent. The portions were generous by European standards and allowed us to try many different things. For our main courses, each of us loved what we ordered. I had a delicious grilled sea bass with garlic and red pepper infused olive oil-- the waiter who de-boned it needed more experience, but the fish was otherwise excellent and it came with a huge portion of grilled pimientos de Padrón, my favorite, enough to share with everyone. My friend ordered the fideua with red prawns and loved it, but I did not. It turns out that I've had other dishes made with the strongly flavored red prawns and I simply don't like that flavor, except in small quantities. Same with bacalao and green bell peppers, if I make a mistake and order something with those, I will not enjoy it, not the fault of the restaurant. Another friend had the mushroom risotto, and another had grilled eggplant that was pronounced fabulous and was not shared, so it truly must have been great, she's tiny, but ate it all. We'll order one of each of those with the starters next time. We had cocktails, several beers, a bottle of wine, a few bottles of water. The bill was perfectly reasonable for the feast we had, about 75 euros/person for the main meal of the day, which, considering we pay $15 here for a hot dog, fries, and a kid's drink, seemed like a steal. I can't wait to go back. The menu has English translations but aren't super descriptive. Carbón is very modern in some ways and yet in others very traditional. I would bring guests here over and over! read more
