So, if you haven't been, there's three sections to this place. First is the volleyball courts and open air bar. To the left of that is the smaller interior bar (no AC?) where they hold their game nights; and then to the right of the courts (in which you need to turn right at the light to get to) is the larger warehouse restaurant. This is where we eventually ended up at. Since there was a tournament going on, and the US World Cup match was die to begin at 8p, a ton of tables were what reserved. And no doubt why, their main screen is a big a a house!!. My girlfriend enjoyed their Strawberry Limeade slushie, which she enjoyed immensely. My mother had the Mexican Lager Athletic (meh, she said), and I tried two flights (5 choices) - having to try all 6 of their IPAs (the hot honey one was by far my favorite), 2 of their fruity beers and then 2 of their darker choices. To be honest, the IPAs, save the hot honey, all tasted similar. The fruity ones edged on sour but were not overly puckering. And the porters ended the meal nicely. Food wise, the grilled chicken pita was massive! Could have filled two smaller pitas with the same amount of chicken. The grilled salmon was made well, and with a yummy side of hushpuppies. I had the Ahi-Tuna Wrap, with no cucumbers - basically it was a sushi roll, but in a wrap. The cucumber-Wasabi dressing though was PHENOMENAL!!!!! I had to order an additional cup of it bc it was THAT GOOD. (come to find out it comes pre-made by Lan's, which is on Amazon - now I can enjoy it at home!). Service was good. And the warehouse ceiling is sound proofed, so noise doesn't bounce everywhere. Great experience. Would definitely some back again!! read more

My best friend, nieces and I visited this place because it was on our bucket list. It's been featured on a favorite TV show of ours, and my nieces were excited to have lunch and play some volleyball. We dined inside and had an appetizer of fried pickles, and we all ordered sandwiches (and a salad) with tots or fries. Everything was delicious. It was fun watching people playing volleyball on the numerous outdoor sandy courts. We played a game and it was only $10! The waitstaff were very helpful and directed us to our court and we were given a volleyball. This was such a fun experience! read more

You're probably not coming here for the food, but to play volleyball and hang out. My friend and I got the nacho plate and it was very average...lots of lettuce, some tomatoes, and a side of chili. It really needed pico or salsa. That said, we weee hungry and ate it. They were out of some of the beers we wanted, but settled on one of the sours which was fine. Again, nothing crazy to write home about, but the place is fine for a casual afternoon and drink. read more

Collin might have been the best server/bartender I have ever had in my life. He was so attentive that I never had to question my need for another beer, my order, or my thoughts on what I may need in general. I would like to thank Bills as a whole, but more specifically Collin behind the Tiki bar, for the experience that was given to me. read more

Have only ordered nachos and a few drinks from here but both the food and drinks were great. Service was quick and the ambiance is always fun. Enjoy watching the people play the nets while having a conversation. Location of the building itself is odd but when you enter feels entirely elsewhere. Recommend for the experience! read more

Food was decent. Service was good. Ambience was good. Just a fun place to hang out or watch a game or even to catch a volleyball game if that's what you like read more

Fun place for beer and food. We were a group over over 100 people (beer club) The place is closed on Tuesays but they opened up the place for our group. Ordered food via their app. Good food, although the pulled pork was on the dry side. Fried chicken sandwich was filling, as was the burger. Tasty fries. The batteries fried mushrooms were hot and juicy. Their cocktail menu needs updating, as the font colors are very hard to read. read more

Happened to go here during a volleyball tournament. Had no idea they did volleyball! There's two spots to have beer and food on the property. Beer selections are good and food is surprisingly good. Would return, and do recommend! read more

Food was great and the volleyball tournament was on point. Lots of action. I got the Buffalo shrimp and tater tots. Was a lot of food. Couldn't eat it all but had lots of shrimp . read more

Capt'n Bill's Backyard Grill - Several courts, nice sand - Sports Bars Near Me - Wilmington, North Carolina

Pretty decent food. Went out on a Thursday night after a long drive to the town, the location was bit hard to find through gps. However the sandwich was good but the fries were a little too salty and covered with seasoning. Service was okay but rather slow for only having two tables and four people at the bar. There were people playing volleyball which may have hindered the service but otherwise cool little place to try but probably won't come back. read more

A Wilmington institution for good reason. Great food (still at reasonable prices), excellent brews from right next door (Bill's Brewing Co.) and some of the most efficient/friendly service you'll ever receive. One of my happy places, never change! read more

Went on a Sunday night to watch some football and have dinner. No hostess or servers to greet us in the restaurant. We sat ourselves and figured out that you had to go to the bar to order drinks and food. I guess they are short on staff?? Food took 45 minutes to come out. Screaming children were running wild in the restaurants due to inattentive parents on the volleyball courts. Food was ok for bar food. Nice, new venue but poorly managed. We were hoping for a better experience. I doubt we will return as there are other sports bar options in Wilmington. read more

I ordered the fresh catch grouper grilled and it was perfection. Was a tad nervous ordering seafood since it was more of a bar food joint but was very surprised. Was cooked thoroughly with grill marks and beautifully seasoned. Added some lemon and it was incredible. Highly recommend! read more

Preface - we are huge fans of Bill's Front Porch and have stopped over to Captain Bill's several times to watch volleyball, so tonight we decided to give Captain Bill's a whirl for drinks and dinner! We saw on FB that Captain Bills had $10 burgers and beers on Thursday and that is a GREAT deal! You get to choose from beers brewed at Bill's Front Porch and I love all of those beers based on past experiences so we were very happy. We had the black IPA and the Pale Ale and and both were very good. Because we were starving we ordered the wings as an appetizer and man- they were delicious! We had them medium on our server's recommendation and as a wings junkie they were some of the best I've ever had. The blue cheese dressing was chunky just how I like it! Our special burgers were the "slop burgers" which came with the works..chili, cheese, veggies...you name it! They were HUGE! I mean for $5 there is no better deal... sadly I had one bite of mine not due to quality but to the fact that I ate EVERY single one of the 12 appetizer wings- sigh. Leftovers for dinner tomorrow.... Hubby said the burgers were incredibly filling- he is a fussy eater and ate every bite! It was so cool to watch the athletes play volleyball and we talked to several, asking them about the league, etc. Everyone was super cool and it was so entertaining to watch the various games and skill levels over the course of our meal. We had one main server but also had several others come by to check and chat with us- they were all super sweet and even gave us a few hints on The $2 "mystery beer" before we ordered. We will continue to patronize either Bill's Front Porch (see my Yelp review) or the Volleyball Club EVERY time we come to Carolina Beach- they are both that good and WELL worth the drive! read more

Capt'n Bill's Backyard Grill - $2!!! Take a chance! - Sports Bars Near Me - Wilmington, North Carolina

I've been going to Bill's since 2013 and have loved each visit. From 2013-2017 I was going weekly for volleyball games to see friends. Every person working there and every person who frequented Bill's was so incredibly friendly; everyone knew everyone and everyone made you feel like family. When I moved to NV I knew I would miss it. After 5 long years gone, I went to ILM and my top spot to eat at was Bill's. This time I got to introduce my spouse to the amazing environment and mouth watering food. Don't even get me started on their hush puppies or I'll cry. Musser's BBQ Plate is literally everything I loved about living in North Carolina beautifully put on a plate. There's nothing like sitting out on the deck, eating amazing food and dodging those rogue volleyballs :) read more

Outdoor volleyball! Just wild. Had no idea this place existed. Very cool. Def get a team together to play volleyball and drink!

Excellent service, good buffalo chicken wrap. I didn't care for the fries; they seemed either overcooked or re-cooked. I like the ambiance on the deck, as well, watching the people play volleyball. read more

Great place and good food. I will come back every time I visit Wilmington NC. Everyone was nice.

Threw my son's graduation party from UNCW at Capt'n Bill's!! Had them cater it and let me tell you the food was amazing and I didn't have to do a thing!! Plenty of room to have a party and having the courts right by the porch area was awesome!!! We had our own waitstaff and they were great!! My beverage never went empty!! Very attentive to whatever anyone needed! If I had to do another party in Wilmington, I wouldn't hesitate to have it at Capt'n Bills again!! read more

I love the laid back atmosphere. They have great beer from their Brewery and the food is awesome. This past time I had the blackens Grouper sandwich. You could tell it was fresh. Perfectly seasoned and I got a side of their spicy remoulade sauce Which made the sandwich perfect. It's one of our go to spots when we are in town after a long day on the beach. read more

If you love beach volleyball, this is the place to be. The food is not terrible, ranking right around the same as an applebee's on quality. We came here get lunch and watch the Patriots game. In my opinion Capt'n Bills is one hell of an all-American dive bar, I absolutely love it. Where else can you find great staff, great service, great food and drink specials, all with multiple volleyball courts right there in the backyard? I don't know where the negative reviews stem from, but my experiences here have been nothing but pleasant in just about every way I can count them. I wish I lived in the area, I'd be here quite often hitting up the volleyball league and showing off my non-existent skillset. But even if volleyball isn't your thing, it doesn't seem like you need to be a fan to enjoy yourself here. You can simply hang out on the back deck area, watch some sports, hangout at the outdoor bar, play horsehoes, or just admire other people for having active lifestyles. Food was great. Country cooking isn't really my thing, but their basic catering items were some of the best I've tasted. Drink specials seem decent, and they definitely aren't overcharging their non-specials by any means. Erin Musser and staff are absolutely the best part about this place. I would hang out here just to chit chat with them. Great people. Try them out! read more

Since I don't play volleyball, I've never really had a reason to go here. We went this weekend to watch a team in the tournament, and we just grabbed a table on the deck that had a decent view of all the courts. Now, this review is only for the food, which was wonderful. If you're wanting something fancy, this obviously isn't the place but if you're looking for some greasy bar food to eat while the athletic people drink their coconut water and play in the sand, you've found the place. The fries are hot and fresh and the cheesy grilled chicken wrap was simple but so delicious. The wait staff is constantly walking by to check on refills and the fans keep the air moving when it's 500 degrees outside. I may have to make some volleyball friends just so I have a legitimate reason to go eat another chicken wrap. read more

Having moved recently from California I was apprehensive to try food that reminded me of home. Capt'n Bill's knocked that right out of the park. Dude... there's sand, volley ball nets, a tiki bar, and an endless amount of craft beers that taste amazing and aren't all pretentious like some of the down town spots. The music is grade A, there's always something to do or someone to meet, and the bartender I had literally made my day. In case you skipped all that, I'm gonna tack this on at the end, THE FOOD IS AMAZING. Grab some shorts and a T, get a cold one, and actually have fun when you go out drinking. read more

Grew up with a volley ball court in my backyard so when I moved to Wilmington and heard about this place I had to check it out. Great courts. Great atmosphere. Rachel was my server and was outstanding. Attitude and service was on point 100%. The wings were out of this world. The beer constantly cold. But the oyster shooters the oysters shooters were bar none the worst in the world. I don't expect large succulent oysters everywhere I go but at least have more than hell to serve along with it. Talked two of my friends into trying this shit for The first time and it was the worst experience ever. read more

Sally and Kelsey were phenomenal. Very accommodating to me and my pup. Grateful !!! Will remember tonight forever

TERRIBLE service. Took at least 20 minutes for someone to even realize we were there and ask us about drinks. Waitresses had tables all over the huge compound and were running back and forth, so it's more management's fault than theirs. Felt bad for the table of 12 or so who had placed orders before we arrived and were just receiving food as we left. Food itself was fine, fried seafood was good. Got cheese fries for an appetizer, which was a mistake! They were covered in nacho cheese instead of actual cheese. Not appetizing. read more

Was told they serve the best fried chicken in town. It's true. The best fried chicken. We were there Thursday night and enjoyed $4.00 beer flights. Every beer was terrific from this brewery. Then half price apps, the large soft pretzel was hot and fresh, great with the beer. But the chicken!! Got a bucket which was served family style, four dinners and plenty of leftovers, enough for two more meals. Terrific service and a very cool vibe. Next time after dinner I will hit the pin ball machines! read more

I'm all for places that are pet friendly however I think the dogs should not be allowed in the sand area. I was watching volleyball and watched as a guy let his dog run all over the courts. The dog then peed in the sand and later took a dump in the sand. Yes in the area where people have to play and walk from court to court. The guy walked through some of the dump and picked up the big pile but not the little piles that the dog proceeded to leave every couple of steps. Nice to know that the little kids are out there sitting in the sand playing in that let alone the players playing in it. read more
