We've eaten here several times when in town. The staff is so attentive and friendly. Authentic pierogi are the star of the show and in NC, a needle in a haystack. Aside from traditional potato and cheese, there's a rotating selection of some that are out of the ordinary. My spouse got the foot long Nathan's hot dog with crinkle fries and was very happy with both. I got the havarti and dill filled pierogi and some that were filled loaded baked potato style. I'm not sure why they were swimming in a butter sauce and smothered in onions, but the sour cream was underneath the pierogi so could barely be tasted. I also got the Polish tacos that use a pierogi shell and is filled with kielbasa, sauerkraut and topped with horsey sauce. It all tasted good at first, but it wasn't until both the tacos and pierogi were nearly cooled down that I noticed how very salty it all was. It took me hours to quench my thirst. read more

If this establishment is supposed to be an homage to Pittsburgh, they have fallen very short. Don't come in hungry, the food is nasty - nothing close to what Pittsburgh food tastes like. Pittsburgh would be embarrassed to have their name associated with this place. Pretzels were microwaved, super rubbery and just look at the cheese. Nachos were goopy - just gross! I lived in Pennsylvania for years and developed quite an affinity for pierogies. Up until now, I've only ever seen the Mrs. T's in the south so when I heard about this place called Joe's that had not only pierogies but an ENTIRE Pittsburgh style menu, we hopped in car the next day and headed out. Make no mistake this is a PA spot with the Steelers decor and, of course, because no PA bar would ever not have Yuengling on tap. We settled in and started with some traditional Cheddar pierogies and also some ghost pepper ones. Served with a generous dollop of whipped cream, the ghost pepper ones were hot but absolutely delicious! They have a selection of 4 that rotates daily so I'll def be stopping back to try some more! My husband had a burger which a generous patty cooked perfectly and really juicy. I chose from the Pittsburgh menu and had the Steel City Chipped Ham sandwich. I elected to have mine hot but you can also have it served cold. Lettuce, tomato, and generous amount of American cheese melted on top made this a meal I was able to enjoy twice since it was so big. The Pittsburgh menu also has a Steelworker stack where you can choose between Meats including pastrami and Philly Cheesesteak. All in all, we got a ton of really good and perfectly prepared food for a very reasonable price. Crowd seems laid back and local, I can see why it's a popular spot. Here is the story... we spend a lot of time in Carolina Beach as it's our second home. And have passed by the non-descriptive strip mall many times that is home to Joe's. Fast forward to Man v Food visiting for the pierogi challenge and we had to find out more. First, what the heck is a pierogi and second where is Joe's? Joe's is in that strip mall anchored by a Food Lion between Wilmington and the bridge to CB (Carolina Beach). Second, a pierogi is a carb loaded comfort food with Central/Eastern European roots. And in the US has strong ties to Pittsburgh and other immigrant areas. When combined with other savory items like onions or peppers can make a filling meal but many times is considered a side with a protein entree. And last while possible to finish, I would not recommend trying the Man v Food Challenge of 2.5 pounds of bread and potatoes. read more

3.5 stars I liked Joe's! It's in the area that used to occupy the Boars'Head. The inside was well lit with a definite sports bar feel. You could tell the owner was a steeler fan but all different sports teams were represented. They had the Itunes jukebox which we like. They seemed to be plenty of seating, and we choose the bar as we usually do! They appeared to have several drink specials each night beer and liquor. I went with the IPA on special. Ok selection of draft beers- not a lot of craft stuff, which is our thing. On the suggestion of one of the locals I went with the pierogi appetizer and damn was that good! I did half pizza stuffed and half Reuben . I heard the cheeseburger ones were even better but they were 86ed. Hubby had the pretzels bites and they were very good- warm and buttery with a beer cheese dipping sauce- sauce was not quite what we were used to but it was ok! We were so full we ordered the Onion ring with fries burger to go to be taken home and split later, but alas , I feel asleep. Hubby said it was good though.....next time!! Lively atmosphere. Fresh food. A local's go to. Visited for the first time on a Sunday afternoon. Was able to walk in and sit right at a table. Music on speakers was a bit loud inside, but at least it was good music! Current customers seemed to be locals that primarily hung out at the bar. Absolutely love this place!!! I call it a" hole in the wall " because it's not a franchise and it's located with Masonboro Commons- normally ppl overlook these type places. Is a nice bar- they make great drinks and have a lot of drink specials but they are known for their homemade pirogies. They make all kinds and have daily specials- but you better order them early because they sell out!!! My favorite are the ghost pepper pirogies. My mom and I stopped here for a late lunch around 3 pm. We sat down at one of the only clean tables. We waited for over 5 minutes. I went up and stood at the bar to get someone's attention. The lady apologized and said she didn't see us. She brought the menus over and while that was happening a very buzzed man yelled to turn the music up. They turns the music up so loud it was insane. The car crowd here (no game on) was a little rowdy for this time of the day. I felt like it was a Friday night. A family came in with a child and she was holding her ears because of the music. I love the fact that this is a Steelers place and being fro Pittsburgh myself they know great food. Speaking of great food- the food was excellent! I had a chef salad and it was huge! The pierogis were some of the best I have had outside of Pittsburgh. Definitely the best in town! The chili was good with a kick of spice. I really loved the food and would have given this place a much better rating of it was an enjoyable eating experience. Also, when we left there were 4 people standing right at the front door smoking. I have not written a bad review since Covid started because restaurants have taken enough. However I ordered a salad and pierogies to go and was really, really underwhelmed for the cost. The large house salad had wilted/old lettuce for $7.25 and 4 pierogies were $10. The pierogies were highway robbery. 6 for $10 I could see because that's still $1.66 per pierogi and enough to cover overhead while making a profit. Out for a ride after Nikolai's apt. We stumbled across Joe's Oasis. (Pittsburgh style Bar) Being originally from the Pittsburgh area, when we find one we stop. Iron City, Pierogies and Steel town stacks! We got more than enough to eat. (Taking some home) Brought Nikolai , outside seating is pup friendly. (Shady) Immediately brought him a big bowl of ice water and a scratch behind the ears. Everyone's take on the area food is different but, we quite enjoyed it. Came to pick up the order, and the bartender, who could careless, was like sorry the kitchen cancelled your order. Asked if could place the order now since I was there. Same bartender was like nope. Funny part is the restaurant was busy with other people placing orders. Due to the "I could careless" attitude of this place, I will never step-in or place an order here ever. Food and service has gone down hill drastically since the last time I was here. The southwest egg rolls were okay. They had a bed of brown lettuce under them though. . . I ordered the Carolina reaper wings and a side salad. The waitress forgot to put my salad in but I didn't say anything because I was worried it would be brown lettuce. The wings were flavorless. Not at all spicy. Must have ran out of reaper peppers? The blue cheese was super watery. My son liked his chicken tenders and fries. When I asked about the lack of prices, the response I got was....the owner wants the flexibility to adjust pricing since her suppliers are always changing their costs. Came here for a early lunch it was pretty empty with about 2 other tables. Place was pretty small for a bar but food I thought was pretty good. I wanted to get the soup with half a sandwich but the sandwich that I wanted was only served dinner time which was the joes club. Downfall I couldn't get that but bright side was it was great to know you can have that kind of deal for dinner. Was excited to learn that there was a place in town that was serving Chipped Ham sandwiches, as the only time I ever seem to be able to get those anymore is when I;m visiting home in Maryland. The sandwich was great! It had plenty of Isaly's Chipped Ham and the Kaiser roll was a fantastic. The first trip I had the sandwich cold and it was divine. The second time I had it toasted, which was good...but I, personally, prefer my Chipped Ham sandwich cold :) My husband had the Steelworker sandwich and he enjoyed it as well!
