We went for Sunday lunch on a beautiful not scorching day. The whole place was packed. Fortunately I sniffed out a table that was leaving and grabbed the table. My guess is that they are short staffed, but those servers helped each other out. I'm not even sure who was our actual server. they all helped each other out and we had great service. The food was rather slow. It is pretty much bar food, I guess I thought there was more than that, but it's just bar food. I ordered the chicken strips and it was frozen chicken strips, nothing fancy. My husband had the mac and cheese with bacon and that was very good. I'd order that next time. The bathrooms leave a lot to be desired, but they worked. We came for the patio and enjoyed the patio. Food truck stop! This was a pop up bike night meet where you biked, walked or whatever to get yourself to the party. The smell from the truck was amazing. We got up and checked out the burger menu. Not even a moment into reading it my husband knew he wanted the garbage burger. Oh my: burger, Cole slaw, fries and fried egg all on this bun. I got the bus burger, just the meat patty, toppings and bun. I got mine with a tremendous helping of curly fries. The serve adult drinks or kids drinks. The meat patty was easily a frozen patty, but you can't really hold that against them since it was a truck. I've been here many times but decided to bring my 10 yr old here after a day at the pool. We ordered at the counter and the bartender was extra nice and helpful. I ordered a mushroom Swiss burger with fries and my son the chicken and waffles. We need more of these kind of places along our biking trails and river walks. Des Moines, let's step it up! I typically go West or South when riding my bike and this time we decided to go a little North and found this gem near the marina. When entering the place there are tons of bike parking and everyone seems to be having a good time overlooking the river and playing yard games that's put out for everyone. At the time I was there, they also had a bingo game going on but we were there for a few drinks and maybe some food. We made it out on such a perfect time and day. The weather was perfect and it was golden hour the sun was slowly making it's way out. All the staff were friendly, I did not find anything wrong with this place. As many things I do find myself loving, I hope it doesn't get too popular that it gets ridiculously overcrowded. Need to come back here again! read more

This is a really fun and chill place to sit and have drinks with friends, especially during the summer with live music outside. The food situation is a little confusing, though. They have a regular menu but apparently do not serve it all the time. The night we went, they just had someone grilling burgers and brats outside. It all tasted fine but was cash only. So, our group was a little unprepared. Luckily, there is an atm inside. I realize they used to be a food truck, so they are likely still working on transitioning to the restaurant portion. We always stop here when our bike rides take us thru Birdland Marina. I hid from the rain here so long it made my bike ride wobbly afterwards. The change this place has seen over the last couple of years is great! This part of the bike trail and marina has needed a place like Captain Roy's for years and I super glad someone has taken the time to create it. Alcohol and beer selections are right on target not so many, but everything you'd want. Live music on an old pontoon gives the ambiance of a great river haunt you'd frequent. Just enough light hanging over your head at night to keep things casual. The addition of the deck overlooking the river is where I always want to sit and that's true of almost everyone going there and why I can't always get a table up there. Sometimes I just go up there and ask "you mind me joining you?" I've never been turned down. People just love having fun here. The food is from a truck and to be honest I've only had the hot sausage sandwich. Ever visit a place and you were so impressed with the first item you ordered and never deviate from that ever again, well that's my problem. I dig their hot sausage sandwich. Great Guys, Crazy Truck, with lots of stuff to choose from! Captain Roys was parked outside of Confluence Brewery last Saturday! My wife was in need of some food after some brews and she said well got grab me something while I change our baby's Diaper! Since she was changing the Diaper I must have had GARBAGE on my mind cause when I saw Captain Roys have a Garbage Burger on the menu I had to order it! I got my wife a Garbage Burger, it comes with a fried egg on it, fries, lettuce, tomato, onion... in other worlds the whole works! She dug it and the fries! I made it a basket for her for 3 bucks more! Which comes with a side and a pop! I didn't eat anything but I ordered and waited in line and the staff was great, making everyone feel welcome and the food did not take long! Hope to see Captain Roys Crew again someday! read more

Captain Roy's is a riverside food bus with a small bar and plenty of outdoor seating. Nice little beer selection including local favs from Exile, Firetrucker, and others. A variety of burgers, waffles, and sides (meaning you'll likely be spending 10+ per person). It's still very much a work in progress but ultimately the indoor bar will be finished, there will be tons of live tunes being played (even have a stage that can float) and there are hopes of having a genuine festival there. Right now if you go there's a good chance that the children of one of the brothers who own the place will be taking your order and you may see their grandmother watering flowers and cleaning up the space. This place has so much potential and I'm genuinely excited to see how it might end up (probably earning that last star). read more

This is a funky little joint down on the river and bike trail... is is a happening place during the summer plus they have a patio that is much larger that the inside... During the winter they have a speakers series that is amazing plus they have vinyl bingo and incredible band that play at a reasonable hour. They generally start at 6pm or 7pm... which means you are able to get home at a sensible time. The staff are amazing and the popcorn is super yummy! The only warning I have is that you will smell from fried food as the ventilation system is poor at best... It is spectacular and everyone should give it a try... read more

I had found this stop in the bird land marina area. I loved the simple choices of burgers that came out hot, fast and great tasting. Mine had a fried egg on it that was great. It was messy just the way I like it. It is a burger that you cant put down mostly because you cant pick it back up in 1 piece! Great location. Drive by there on my way home from work. Decided to stop today. Sat at the bar. Looked at the drink menu import beer menu, no Heineken a few beers I've never heard of. Put the menu down to order the two people behind the bar looked at me a couple times. I was ready to order a beer and some food. They were gone. Waited a few minutes. So I left also. Captain Roy's was a newcomer this year for our lot first showing up by invitation the first day our parking sign for food trucks were setup. I was pretty impressed with their menu. It seems they pick items to serve from day to day so don't expect to be able to order from their full menu everyday. Captain Roy's does seem to offer daily specials a decent prices. I tried the Graziano Sausage sandwich basket and found it quite delicious served with a bit of marinara, curly fries and a can of my choice of pop. I would recommend giving Captain Roy's a try if you are new to the food truck scene. Their variety of burgers and interesting "Pizza Fry Pies" are nice and always please if you don't know which truck to choose. read more

A fun outdoor stop on the bike trail. They have a lot of local brews as well as your typical draft beers found anywhere. Beautiful outdoor seating area! Lots of space and further West on the property there is a deck right next to the river. Their string lights zig zagging above puts a fun and trendy spin on the place. They always have a food truck and run & advertise specials on certain days. I've seen 'Taco Tuesday' and 'Fish Fry Friday'. I have only ever eaten the tacos food wise but I wouldn't doubt the fish (or anything else for that matter) would be just as good. They have a section of risers for bands or any other kind of entertainer. Lastly, I have heard from the owner, they were going to re-do the inside a bit so there would be a warm space still for people to come in the winter months. Still a stocked bar, he mentioned tv's for the sport lovers, as well as the taco truck being butted up against the building for easy and comfy service. Ahoy! Finally had my first experience at Captain Roys! My friends band was playing the pontoon stage so decided to go check it out. Unfortunately it was a bit rainy but that still didnt take away from the experience. Great place for cyclists, kayakers(is that a term?) boaters, and regular people like me! Great beer selections and prices to go along with them. Lots of seating, room for mingling or dancing too! The food truck kept busy-the smells were amazing. I had already ate so I only got to steal a few curly fries and they were probably the best I ever had! Cooked perfectly! Everyone raved about the other food too. Definitely have to go back when im ready to grub! We got to meet the owners and they told us about all the plans they have for the spot and it sounds awesome! I can't wait to see what they pull together. Its a cool spot for bands to play and to hang with your friends. I'm sure I'll be back to Captain Roys soon! read more

I will say it did take pretty long to get our food but it was worth the wait. Stopped in Sunday morning while cycling with some friends. They are very cyclist friendly with a nice place to park your bike. The bar is all new and I really liked the atmosphere. I have never actually heard of Captain Roy's prior to stopping, which was unfortunate for me. Had a Bloody Mary and the Biscuits and Gravy. The Bloody Mary was pretty good, maybe a little pricey. The Biscuits and Gravy comes attopped with shredded cheese, which I have never seen done before, but I thought it was very good and the biscuit was very soft. I will have to make sure I ride that trail more often so I can try more of their menu items. read more
