The parking lot was crowded so we thought this was a hot spot! We had a party of 8. 4 babies and 4 adults. The food was gross. We ordered chicken tenders for the kids and a cheeseburger Cheeseburger never arrived, we ordered the Taste of Calabash, 2 plates of sautéed scallops, salad, etc. Has a gorgeous view but the food is nasty! With family living in nearby Supply, NC, we've been coming here for years. Always consistently good and fresh. We were in town during 4th of July weekend. We made our tradition of eating at Captain Nance's with 4 generations of family at our table. Despite being a busy weekend, service was great; food was quick; place was clean and neat. I love supporting family business but I'd really recommend a second look at the seafood quality:( Decided to come here because all it was the only open. The seafood cocktail which was literally raw oysters (out of shell) with cocktail sauce. I was extremely doubtful of the freshness of the oysters after 1 piece so didn't even finish them. The way they were shell-less mushed up together was also very offputting. Clam chowder wasn't bad. Soft shell crab itself wasn't bad but the "sandwich" was literally just the crab between 2 pieces of buns. The hush puppies weren't bad either. Stopped in while fishing. It is a nice place and has friendly staff. (Bailey was very good to us). The hush puppies are great; hot, cakey, crusty on the outside and slightly sweet on the inside. I ordered a flounder sandwich and my friends ordered the lunch special. The Deviled crab looks good. I didn't try it. My flounder sandwich was tasty though, and the coleslaw was decent enough, nothing special. I would definitely come back! read more

This seafood is really good. I go here every time I'm in the area, about once a year. This particular visit was good. It's so fresh. My only complaint this time would be that the shrimp platter had oil swimming in it. If it had been drained before putting it on the platter it would have been great. Service was excellent, prices as reasonably as can be expected these days. Lots of food. The "audience" was patient. The minute we stepped away from the table tho, it was a free for all. read more

We have eaten there more times than I can count. I have only had a few bad experiences due to not enough staffing. And even though the lady at checkout doesn't have a bad attitude she just never smile and interact with customers. It just seems like she is always mad or something but I know she is not. I come from California to Captain Nance's in Calabash when visiting my dad's extended family originally from Whiteville. Now they're scattered in Ash, Shalotte, Wilmington, & nearby. We were a talkative group, but free to enjoy our selves on the outdoor patio. My husband & I started coming to the popular seafood restaurant probably 20-30 years ago with local NC family. The service was excellent. The servers helped us move tables from a sunny spot to the patio edge closest to the water & repositioned the umbrellas for max shade. We had 12 family members with 3 generations. My favorite side dish is hush puppies. Haha. We can't get them on the west coast. I liked the seafood too. Everyone was pleased with their meals, including the 3 & 5 yr olds who ate theirs happily. I bought a T shirt to advertise my visit & will definitely be back. read more

CRABLEGS! That's really all that I need to say. We were actually heading to another spot close by for dinner but got turned off because they were NOT practicing social distancing during the pandemic. We landed on a jewel by accident. Our server was super sweet and attentive. We chose outdoor seating and had a really nice view. The hush puppies were sooooo good. I generally only eat one or two but hubby and I scoffed down the entire basket! My friend who joined me and I chose crab legs and they were phenomenal. The only good thing about this place was our wait staff and the hush puppies. I realize that ordering pulled pork from a fish restaurant is risky but getting thawed out food from Sam's Club Is disgusting! I had "flounder" and clam strips. Clam strips were but ok the fish was just gross. If you want thawed then reheated food go to the local fast food place, you'll be better off. I won't be back! read more

I grew up going to the place with my family since 1980s. Last week, I took my girlfriend to the place. I haven't been gone there over ten years. They did great job remodeling and better views . The food are still always great and good affordable!! Worth visit!! read more

Well this was several steps up from our last visit last year! It's beautiful on the water, but does have carpet, which can be difficult to keep clean. Brief breakdown: - they serve some great fish in large portions with plenty of hush puppies, enjoy! - they accommodate larger group (25 ppl in our case) and still serve everyone well and incredibly kindly - they work well with kids (7 kids below the age of 8), always friendly and always helpful - there was only one meal that did not end up well - I had bones in my grouper handheld. But the staff was amazing: they took it back, brought me a large grouper plate without question, and don't charge me for either -- yes, I tipped well and thanked them profusely. Certainly this can happen to no fault of the staff, and they handled it like professionals. Overall I highly recommend this place. We enjoyed it despite making it hectic for everyone. Terrible is the kindest thing I can say. i had been coming to Capt Nance's for many years living in myrtle beach. Not sure what happened but this place is now terrible. Today was the last time i will ever set foot in this place. Ordered the lunch special with shrimp and flounder. First off, its way overpriced and was just a few shrimp, not cooked well or hot. The flounder was folder over piece and hard. Frys were even bad. My wife ordered the "shrimp salad" and was a few cold boiled shrimp put on a few pieces of lettuce, tomato, and was tasteless and unappetizing. Salad was $15 and a ripoff as well. Tony and I went to the area to celebrate my upcoming birthday. This is my official birthday trip. We try to have one every year. Tony and I decided to have a great seafood dinner and I drove us up to Calabash, NC to make that come true. I was very excited that Captain Nance's Seafood was opened and had availability for our small dinner party. We opted to dine outside on the decking by the marina. We were seated, given a menu and she took our drink order. Tony had a beer and I had soda. We opted for a seafood platter to share. It included crab, scallops, oysters, shrimp and grouper along with hushpuppies with honey butter, cole slaw and French fries. The food was so good and so fresh. The only thing that bothered me was all of the birds that was swooping around us ...it was like a scene out of Alfred Hitchcocks THE BIRDS...it was a little exciting, nerve wracking and very rememberable. Stoped here for lunch yesterday while we were driving up the coast. Most of the menu is fried (which I don't eat often due to T2 diabetic) but once in a while is ok. I had the fried shrimp and clam strips. The breading was tender and sweet and the shrimp and clam strips were very good. Very juicy and not over cooked. This is a nice little spot with a marsh view and good seafood, and was a nice intro to our time in Calabash. We were looking for a pet-friendly spot on the water and decided on this spot above the fun-looking spot next door, which we're going to try and hit while we're in town. Got food poisoning within hours from oysters cocktail - there's no way they were fresh oysters

Went to captain Nancy's yesterday 11/9 for a 40 year reunion with a good friend. The service was good but the food sucked ,oysters I had broiled along with scallop and they were the worst I have ever had. My wife and my friends wife had the crab cake and they were the smallest I have ever seen but they said the taste was good. My friend had the seafood platter and he said it was ok. On Thursday, November 2nd, 2023, I stopped at this seafood restaurant in Calabash (North Carolina) after returning from my day trip to Myrtle Beach. I ordered a fried seafood combination platter (with shrimp, oysters, flounder, scallops, deviled crab, sweet potato fries, & coleslaw) as my main course. For my appetizer, I ordered a cup of oyster stew. To start, I got a basket from hushpuppies with honey butter, and they were excellent. For my first course, the oyster stew was great. It was a light white broth with whole oysters in it. For my entree, I thought this was the best fried seafood I had on my entire trip to the Carolinas and Florida. Even though the shrimp were a little small, they were flavorful and excellent. I found the fried oysters to be excellent, and they were just as good as the ones I had in St. Augustine. The scallops I had were excellent. They were fresh from the Atlantic Ocean, and they were abundant in flavor. The flounder was a huge filet, and it was very mellow and tender. The deviled crab was chopped and roasted with vegetables on a shell. It was also good, but it was my least favorite out of everything else I got. I thought the sweet potato fries and coleslaw I received with my seafood to be excellent as well. The service was very accommodating and very quick for a busy restaurant. The interior dining room was fancy. The outdoor views were also spectacular. I'd recommend tourists in Myrtle Beach to come up to this restaurant at the North Carolina border to enjoy high quality, local seafood. read more

Just got back from my attempt to dine another place and got roped into Nance's. My past experiences have steered me from the cookie cutter down at the docks places but...I liked it. It was just good. I had wanted grouper from another place but when I found out they had it for lunch special my gastric spirit soared. I did not expect it to be as good as it was. Props to the cook and to Mia for recommending blackened. She was a great waitress btw. My only critique of there was one would be to offer more varied sides. Roasted veggies or asparagus maybe. Possibly a special roll. In any case, I was pleasantly surprised and it was a much needed treat. She offered a free side order. What?!? A free side order doesn't quite compensate for nearly drinking a dead bug!! Why did this occur ma'am? We went to Captain Nance's for the first time today. We wanted fried clams in NMB but no one had them on their menus - we tried 12 of our favorite spots! What a wonderful experience at Nance's! It's a very casual restaurant and very clean. Our server, Damonte, was helpful and tremendously accommodating. We ordered flounder, shrimp, fried clams and grouper bites. Waaaay too much food and that was not problem - three meals for us. Everything was delicious and they were the most tender clam strips I have ever had - yes, I said "ever." None of our food was overly salted (I do not like a lot of salt) and the breading was light and flavorful. Oh, let's not forget the moist, perfectly cooked hush puppies served with honey butter - delicious. What a great find for us - delicious food, comfortable, great service and with a terrific view.
