Soft Shell Crab sandwich so fresh and good!
Tim S.

Gotta love seafood shacks with good food. Was getting hungry as it was after lunchtime, and was really in the mood for some good seafood. Looking atYelp, I saw that the Calabash Seafood Hut had very good reviews and resolved to give it a try. My experience started with a warm smile and friendly greeting by the friendly young lady at the counter. Being a sucker for softshell crab, I ordered the softshell crab sandwich (poorboy) and a soft drink. (Should have had the sweet tea -- free refill, darn it.) There are outdoor picnic tables as well as an indoor seating area. It was a beautiful day and I enjoyed my delicious meal outside. Yum! So glad I came in for a meal. Not sure when my travels will bring me to this neck of the woods, but would be happy to have more meals here.

These were the "local" shrimp they served us after an hour and fifteen minute wait. That is my pinky finger.

What a disaster. We were seated fairly quickly and our waitress got our drink and food order quickly. And that was the last thing positive that happened during the meal. After placing our orders we had to wait for 1 hour and 15 minutes before our food arrived and it WAS NOT worth the wait. We had a shrimp and flounder platter and while the restaurant claims to be all about fresh, local seafood the shrimp were the most pathetic things I have ever seen. They had to be frozen and almost assuredly imported from Asia. Most were smaller than my pinky finger fingernail (see photo), had no taste and a very odd texture. The shrimp were so small there is no way they could have stayed in a trawler's net which also indicates that they were imported. There hush puppies were also very strange. Being a southerner I have had a lot of hush puppies in my life but haven't had any like these. They were actually chewy and had almost no flavor. Very strange. Overall, this place was a disaster and absolutely not worth your time. Our waitress was nice but other than that I would highly recommend you go somewhere else. Actually, go to Island Seafood Company and ask them what is fresh, take it home and cook it yourself. You will be way happier.

This is supposed to be different kinds of seafood...it didn't taste like it

The service was quick, meal was very cheap, and the seafood fresh. A great place to go if you want a seafood fix.

One of our favorite stops when at the beach. Nothing fancy or high priced. Traditional seafood, always good.

I absolutely love this place and is one of my favorite places to stop before I head to Myrtle Beach. It's located in Calabash, NC so it's like 10 minutes before you get to the SC boarder. It might be shorter than that. But anyway, I love coming here obviously the food is fresh and fantastic. They have plenty of outdoor seating and it's always nice and clean. The staff is wonderful. I love that every time I've come, I'm always greeted with a warm welcome and a smile. Everything that I've tried has been great. And they have lots of options. Check out my pics and I'm a creature of habit so I got the same thing but one thing I did try was the Wahoo fish. It was perfect and I'd never had it before. I can see this easily being a fan favorite. And lastly the dessert. I highly recommend getting the fried pound cake and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It's heavenly. Although, not pictured, they have a great pumpkin pie. Follow their Instagram for updates because they do close down I want to say the Thanksgiving day up until Spring so about March or April. It's a good time and you won't be disappointed. Check them out if you are in the area.

This is the place to go if you want a beautiful waterfront dining experience and you don't mind paying a premium for it. We sat outside on the lawn and enjoyed the views and easy walk to the peer while we waited for our food to come out. Our server was lovely but I wish they printed the specials as it was certainly overwhelming trying to keep track of 10+ items and remember them all. Where this restaurant missed for me was the price and flavor. We ordered the crab cake special which was fine but underwhelming in terms of flavor. Certainly disappointing for the price. We also ordered the blackened fish which was so bland and flavorless. Again incredibly overpriced for a disappointing dish. It's been months and I still regret not sending this dish back to the kitchen. All in all, the restaurant is really beautiful and it's a great place for a date or special occasion where vibes are more important than how the food tastes (or cost!s!). If you're sensitive to price or have high flavor expectations, I wouldn't recommend.

It's about an hour's drive from our home in Conway, South Carolina, but I can tell you right now--it's well worth the trip! I ordered the lunch special featuring calabash shrimp and clam strips. I've always enjoyed Calabash-style seafood, but this was exceptional! My wife, Helen, chose shrimp and flounder from the Build Your Own menu. The portions were so generous that we both had plenty of food left to take home. They certainly don't skimp on the amount of food they serve! We decided to eat outside on the deck overlooking the fishing boats, which made for a wonderful waterfront dining experience. The view was beautiful, and the staff was very pleasant and attentive throughout our visit. I only wish this restaurant were closer to home because I would happily eat here every week! A Word of Caution About the Outdoor Deck As much as we enjoyed our meal, I do want to share something important for anyone planning to sit outside. When entering the deck, be careful of the step-down ledge. I was admiring the beautiful view and didn't notice the drop, causing me to fall onto my right hand and leg. Unfortunately, neither our waitress nor any signs warned us about the step. In addition to bruising my ego, I injured my arm and leg. Four days later, I was still recovering from the fall. Hopefully, the restaurant will consider adding a warning sign to help prevent someone else from having the same experience. We'll Definitely Be Back! Despite the unfortunate fall, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and plan to return for another lunch or dinner. I'll simply be more careful when walking out onto the deck next time! Before leaving, we also stopped by the restaurant's fish market and purchased a few pounds of fresh-caught shrimp to take home. What a great bonus to an already enjoyable trip! If you're in the Calabash area and enjoy fresh seafood, generous portions, friendly service, and waterfront dining, this place is definitely worth checking out. Just remember to watch your step if you choose to eat outside!
