First time to visit, such a wonderful experience. We were driving through on our way to Texas and stopped in after recommendations from friends that had been there. It did not disappoint. The food was wonderful. Our group had skewered shrimp, fried shrimp, fried crawfish tails, red beans and rice, and cornbread. Servings were nice size. So I've been in town for about a week now and somebody recommended that we check this place out. I guess they've just change things up and added a bar from my understanding. The place is packed and well worth the wait, I had the shrimp boil, there was probably 40 pieces of shrimp they were seasoned well, the corn was cooked perfect and the sausage was delicious and Spicy, I ordered a side of slaw, it was good once I mixed the cream at the bottom of the bowl. My wife had the bone in pork chop, it was thick and cook great nice and moist, seasoned to perfection, the starter was crab cakes, they could have been seasoned and did not hold together very well, that was the only item we had that needed work, all together it was very good and would still get 5 stars. Food and service has always been wonderful! Best place to eat in McAlester Oklahoma. Deserves the 5 star rating but has slipped a bit from previous visits. They have obviously changed the recipe for their hot rolls as they are not as soft and tasty as before. Also as many other restaurants, the "catfish" on the menu is not real catfish - most likely the southeast Asian whitefish import. read more

I was working in the McAlester area for a couple of days and had dinner here every night. The catfish bites, gator bites and Cajun toothpicks are really good appetizers. The 20-ounce ribeye is awesome! I will definitely eat here again next time my travels take me to the area. read more

I was very pleased with Captain John's and this probably would have been a 5 star rating had I ordered something different. I got too much fried food and that was my fault. My kids loved the shrimp, steak and the salmon. The fried catfish was pretty tasty and the crab cake was decent but I didn't care too much for the sauce. My salad was fresh and very good. The waitress we had did a great job. She was on top of everything and made sure we didn't need for anything. All in all I am very glad we tried it out and would't hesitate to go back and try some of the other things on the menu. read more

Staying at the Holiday Inn and they gave me a 10% coupon for this restaurant so gave it a shot. I got Coconut Shrimp, fried Catfish, Baked Potato and Hush Puppies. Came with 3 hot yeast rolls. I was a table of 1 and got seated right away, but took right at 30 minutes to get my food after it was ordered. The rolls tided me over though. Was not impressed with the Coconut Shrimp. Did not taste or even see coconut on them and really not sure I even received the right shrimp (they were butterflied). Regardless the dipping sauce I was given for the shrimp....not a fan. Had a weird almost sour tang, and I guess I was expecting a sweet sauce. The catfish was great and I really enjoyed their tartar sauce. Baked potato was great also, as was the homemade yeast rolls. Hush Puppies were just hush puppies, nothing to get excite about. Would return though. Plenty of TV if you want to watch while eating. read more

Stopped for the first on way to fort Smith the food was Soo good I had to stop the next day on my way back home to TX. I will definitely stop here Everytime that I'm passing through. The sirloin steak was great ( just disappointed not an option for a bigger sirloin) the fried catfish is great as was the shrimp skewer and the grilled catfish. The pinto beans were great as well. This place was delicious! The staff was accommodating and super friendly. Our waitress (didn't catch her name) was amazing! We came in late, about 8 p.m., party of 15, with a 30 min. Wait. They closed at 9 but they had a bunch of customers so they weren't worried about it. Decent selection at the bar. Their menu prices and drink prices were reasonable. My husband had the boil and loved it, I had a pick 3: catfish filets were flaky and delicious and huge! Crab cake was good, nothing special, and the 3rd item was crab stuffed shrimp and those were my favorite! They were out of okra, and for that I could give them 4 stars lol. But based on our whole experience, they get 5 stars from me. Fried pickles was our app. Best fried pickles I've ever had and I've had a lot!
