I have been to this joint a few times. The last couple of times, the service has sucked. The first time the bartender (a white middle aged male) got my order completely wrong and the second time I had to wait for a cup of Gumbo for a good 5 minutes even though there was plenty of Gumbo available. If I could chose no stars I would. I went there this past Sunday. Where do I even begin? Due to having my toddler, I needed a table as the small inside area wouldn't accommodate a high chair. A portion of the outside area was closed off. The manager told us we could sit there. We had already observed the area being blocked off. We had to notify the manager that the area was inaccessible. The waiter then prepped the table. Service went downhill after that. The waiter obviously didn't want to be there. I get it waiting tables is not everyone's ideal career, but do you have to look like it. He didn't "tend" to the table. We ordered gumbo to start. The usual crackers and hot sauce that comes along with it was no where to be found. We had to ask for it. He came back and gave it to us, only after we had to ask. Next, the food quality. Over the years, they've been pretty good. This particular day, the food was horrible. The fish was fried hard, and overall the quality of the food was subpar. I've seen less inappropriateness at a strip club... omg where do I start? The food is pretty good, so that's a plus (I ordered fried catfish and oysters, also had the stuffed jalapenos, yummy) but it's too expensive for the environment. I sat inside the boat and the server was just so hyper and odd it just freaked me out. He went from rapping out loud, to cursing, then conversing with the customers nonchalantly... then back to being upset... one thing that really disgusted me was that he burped so freaking loud at one point, it was like Mufassa's roar.... Captain Benny's have been one of my fav restaurants. I would go there for any special occasion and even none special. Today on 6-8-18 I had a really bad experience that even the manager was a total a** with us. It was a table of 4 and some how my husband and I ate first and an 1hr and 30min later my in laws got there plate. My son was already fussy for being there too long my drink was too watery, I had to get up and ask for a refill, and for extra tartar sauce. If you want poor service and worse food this is the place. Our waitress argued about bringing out the wrong food, didn't refill soda, and disappeared for far too long. After waiting for over an hour for one of our salads, one of us got up to tell them to not bring it. Every one else was done eating. As far as the gumbo, better has come out of a can. I can't tell you about the food, as I didn't get to eat it. I told the waitress when I arrived that we were on a lunch break and immediately placed our orders. After an hour we still had no food. No one was rushing around and other patrons seemed exasperated as well. I asked the manager what was going on and he said there was nothing he could do because they had a lot of to go orders. Consistently great food. My "go to" place for fresh and quick seafood...mainly lunch. It has a diner type atmosphere.

eat here if you love seafood and don't want to spend all your money at the other guys! Try the whole fried catfish or the broiled platter... the specials are so good every week you can't go wrong. and the Gumbo there is FAMOUS with the regulars. Once I was at the bar and a woman game in and ordered 5 gallons of gumbo to go for a party... just goes to show how die-hard the fans of Benny's can be. The shuckers are really cool and friendly and unlike some places around... the food is consistently good and I have never had a bad dish. This is one of my favorite seafood places in Houston!!!!!! Recently I took my wife for a visit for lunch. We had 1/2 doz oysters, Lunch special (1/2 lb catfish, 6 shrimp, coleslaw, fries) wife had a fish basket lunch. The food here is great!!!! I have always been full and happy when I left... Total bill was around $35 The waiters are constantly working and will shuck the oysters right in front of you. You can see the cooks from where you sit and everything is just done right in this restaurant.... If you haven't been just give them a try!! read more

This is my favorite spot! The food is always delicious, fresh oysters, gumbo is the best! Try the shrimp po-boy, loaded with shrimp and flavor. The downside is not a lot of space for family sitting, if weather is not cooperating you can go inside but that's probably not the best choice for kids. read more

Friendly spot for cold beer (or Michelada) shrimp and oysters. On the shell or fried along with a good gumbo. Plenty of locals and a staff that remembers you gives a welcome vibe. Good patio in warm weather. read more

If I could have given 0 stars I would have. I purchased a cup of gumbo to go on 3/23/16. When I arrived home to eat it, there's was 1 shrimp and the rest was celery and onions. Yuck. First time here - walked to the outdoor tables & the server comes up & immediately started complaining about how hot he is. Then he preceded to tell us they close in 12 minutes & we have to order & eat in that timeframe. We ordered one combo basket to share and he tvery rudely said this is for both of you to share? We said yes and he said no, really? And then my boyfriend felt obligated to say that we were not very hungry. He brought our food and dropped it off at the table as he was walking by. We asked him for napkins he ignored us and never came back to the table except to drop the bill off still never speaking to us. The entire time we were eating he & the other server kept saying we are closed & slamming around the chairs. Mind you, there were several other tables of people both in & outside eating. The food was decent at best, as for the customer service it lacked the Captain Benny's standard. To start off there was trash all over the floor and the oysters were not cleaned well, then we ordered beers and they tasted old, after that we ordered 4 combo baskets and the batter was bland and had no seasoning, the catfish was not cooked all the way. I like to go here when I get in the mood for seafood....it's a casual laid back joint where you can just sit back and feel the nice breeze under the palapa. The food is always consistently good, the service can be a bit slow BUT only because that place gets crowded around dinner time. It's a come as you are place no hassles just real easy. Saw great reviews how they had cheap pystets and i paid $15 for a dozen oysters (highway robbery during oyster season) Mambo seafood is better and far better pricing. The onsite management is cutting cost by eliminating ingredients and more importantly cutting back on portion amount. I have had the Catfish PoBoy at other locations and it always comes with two catfish fillets. Today at this location I got one fillet, and when I complained they added the other one. The boiled shrimp they serve are way under size and they never bump the qty by one, or two to offset the small size. I will not spend my money with these people again. The server waste a cup of water on my clothes and denied doing it on top of that I told the manager Jason what happened he asked me what did I want him to do about it. Was just there and had the worst service ever. There was honestly 6 couples he acted like he had too many people and was rude. I asked for limes and ranch for my sons food. Waited about 10 minutes and then asked again and he got mad. Was talking under his voice (whispering) as he walked away. He didn't ask for the ranch till I asked him the second time. Other people noticed he was giving really bad service. Then he started talking to other employees about the customers and we could all hear him. Then a customer told him to go home if he doesn't like what he does and he was very unprofessional. Started raising his voice and the customers got mad they were all about to fight. It was my son me and his dad. There were other kids there and I hated the way he handled it. I wanted to talk to the manager and he told us to leave. Wtf did we do? Well whoever he was he needs to get fired. The only reason I gave a star was because the food was good. But you can't enjoy your food with that kind of service. He had the worst attitude.
