This is my go-to place for seafood whenever I'm in Houston. Hot, fresh and delicious. The combo basket has nice size portions. The downside is there is no table seating inside. I have been going to captain Benny's for over 10 years. I recommend starting with the Shrimp Diablos. They are tender shrimp, wrapped in crisp bacon with a thin slice of jalapeño. I squeeze fresh lime on it and eat it plain. You really don't need any sauce. I also love the fried shrimp. They are are always a good size and breaded in cornmeal. I would recommend ordering extra hush puppies because they are somewhat addicting. I also love to wash it all down with a michelada. They have the best in town! read more

I'm usually one to shun outdoor eating but at Captain Benny's, unless you want to sit at the bar, there's not a choice. Both my friend and I were hungry from our drive from Kerrville, so we decided to stay--glad we did. The tables are arranged under a huge palapa and with the breeze breezing, the fans fanning and the sun behind the clouds, it wasn't bad at all. We both ordered the combo basket--catfish, shrimp, hush puppies and fries. Everything was cooked very well; the cornmeal on the fish and shrimp was flavorful but didn't detract from the seafood. The hush puppies were small but very good, with a little cayenne kick on the finish. The fries were excellent; pillowy inside, crispy outside and not a bit greasy. Speaking of grease, even the seafood retained very little of it and there was no hint of staleness, a sign they change or filter it often. The service was friendly and efficient; iced tea (nice and strong) was replaced without asking and a request for extra tarter sauce was immediately answered. All in all, a nice meal at a reasonable price ($24.33 for the two of us). Give them a try when you're in the mood for Southern goodness. read more

I was riding at the bike park right across the street and was starving and this place looked pretty good and mhmmmm it was fire. You get your moneys worth you get hush pups and toast automatically. The oysters were good but no better than others in this area. I ate these oysters without crackers and lemon, not because I didn't want but because they didn't have them. I've been eating at this location every since I moved to Texas and it's normally a good experience. Today (4/4/22) I stopped by and ordered a shrimp Kabob and a bowl of gumbo. While eating the gumbo, I ran across someone's long strand of hair in it. I summoned the Manager over to the bar where I was sitting and showed him the hair that clearly had some particles from the gumbo hanging on it. His response was " no one with long hair handled the gumbo". Are you F-ING SERIOUS??? No apology or anything!!! Needless to say I left this place and will never return because of his unprofessional behavior. All he had to do was apologize and he FAILED!! read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review for this place. I have no idea how they only have 3.5 stars. You want the best fried oysters you have ever had? For that matter, they know how to fry whatever seafood you want, as good as any place. We haven't gotten to the gumbo. When you come here the very first thing you do is get some gumbo. Shrimp? Lots of it. Crab? Lots of it. A slight kick? YES! When I want fried seafood this is the very first place I think of. The indoor seating is just around a bar. It really isn't very big. Love this place! Came into town to visit my dad and stepmom who just moved into the area. My stepmom is very frail, Will & K (sp?) were extremely sweet and hospitable as soon as we arrived, they made sure she was comfortable. Then we ordered 1 1/2 dozen raw oysters (12 first but had to order more haha), calamari, hot and spicy shrimp and fried catfish, EVERYTHING was fresh and delicious. On Fridays they close at 11pm. I could not see the clock and notice the server by the name of Johnny asked to close out my tab, when I received the receipt i notice it was 10:12pm. Oh and Johnny would not prepare a cocktail sauce mixture because I didn't want it to spicy. I thought servers should serve. Why did I ask my oysters, tilapia to be prepared differently than in the menu , because they are their to take your order and serve. To top it off I was eating a French fries and felt something fuzzy touch my lip it was fuzz stuck on the katchup on my fries. Manager TONY Diaz asked, how can I help you? As if it was nothing , "that it don't come from the fryer, sorry". Oh and the reason they asked to close wanted to close out my tab was so they can close their books. Understand that this isn't a $30 a plate seafood restaurant. This is a great lil seafood chain that consistently fries up fish, shrimp, scallops, and offers a variety of other things including gumbo. I usually get the whole fried catfish with fries. It's always perfectly fried and piping hot . Today, I got the whole catfish broiled and stuffed with crab and shrimp over a bed of rice! This was the first time I had it stuffed. I've been missing out! It was delicious . Service is usually quick but nothing fancy. Hate to say this but everything has gone down here. We have been eating here for close to 30 years and the last visit yesterday was not what we expected. Kitchen service was terrible, waited over 30 minutes for our order, they somehow lost it. Portions have drastically changed, tiny fried shrimp and diablos were the smallest I have ever seen. We ordered a fried fish and shrimp basket to go. Once we made it home, my husband began to eat. He states the flavor and smell of this fish was not fresh at all. Of the two of us, he is the one who never complains. So I knew it needed to be addressed. We have never had this issue with them before. Because we live about 15 minutes from the restaurant, we opted to call and speak with the manager. As I explained the situation to him, he could only offer to replace or refund if we came back up to the restaurant. He was unwilling to provide customer service by offering any other solution. I then hung up and came to Yelp. I am all about receiving stellar customer service because that is what I have done for years. The service sucked! I called in my order and I had to ask if I had called the right place and ask the young lady to repeat herself several times because she was mumbling. She didn't care that I couldn't understand her because she continued to mumble and never tried to adjust her speech or volume. When I arrived, I went to the bar and sat for about 5 minutes and no one greeted me or looked in my direction. The man behind the bar was not helping anyone else, just ignoring me. I was on my lunch break and didn't have much time. Finally, I went and stood directly in front of the cashier, in a very small space in front of the door until I was acknowledged. Ah, Captain Benny! I used to eat here a lot back in the 80's...well, the location off Katy Fwy. That was back when you ordered, ate, went to the register and told them what you had...no check. I guess people aren't as trustworthy any more. Ate here just before the end of 2012 with 6 family members (can be hard to do in winter, when you can only eat indoors and there are no tables; just the counters...but two nice women moved down for us so we could all sit together). We all loved the food. I had my oysters and shrimp. Dad had his jumbalaya. Mom had her shrimp. Uncle had his po boy. We were all fat and happy. Loved that one of the guys remembered my dad, who comes here often when he's in town a few times a year. read more

Could barely finish. The cook with the dreads kept staring at us. And when my friend asked the cook with the dreads for to go plates, he only looked at us and slammed the to go plate on the table. It was my first time here and I was pretty impressed with the food. I had the jumbo stuffed shrimp with a side of rice, coleslaw and garlic bread. One word... Amazing!! I was actually quite pleased. My friend had the jalapeño boudin and it was very good. I went to undergrad in Louisiana so I know what good boudin tastes like. This was definitely better than the ones I had there. Went there a few weeks ago, it was 3 of us 2 got their food and I NEVER got mine (this was after an hour of waiting.) I asked our waiter at least 3 times and everytime I was told "It'll be right out." I went to the manager and he told me he couldn't do anything about it and were going to charge me for all of it, so I refused and started requesting to talk someone other than him and that's when he backed down and only charged me for the food we got. Everything is fried in underseasoned cornmeal. The crab fingers had no taste. The stuffed shrimp was way overcooked and when we sent it back, the "boss" came over and said it was fine. Just because you're bigger and louder doesn't make the food any less burnt. It was almost black but was supposed be "delicately fried" to a golden brown. I saw the cook take some out of the refrigerator, and squeeze them with his hands to press the cornmeal coating together. He was not wearing gloves when handling the raw seafood, and continued to touch handles, dishrags, his nose, his face.... It was gross. (I saw this after we sent back the burnt food). We decided to leave and they charged us for the stuffed shrimp we didn't eat. They refused to take it off so we had to pay for it. This place sucked. read more
