it's alright, it's just that the guy likes his fingers while he's working and handing you the pizza and chips.

AND it just so happened that our taxi driver, Jim and his wife have date night at dal Patino every Thursday night. Between 5 of us the first night and 7 of us the second night (we invited Jim and Barbara to join us) we definitely tried the majority of the dishes. Click on the following link for the full menu http://dalpatino.co.uk/menu/a-la-carte/. Massimo, the maitre'd and server was amazing. They actually recognized our voice when we called for reservations the second night. Reservations are recommended as this place is small and quite busy. The food is fantastic! Quite possibly the best Italian I've had to date. We tried appetizers, main dishes and desserts. These three are at the top of my list: Crostini Calabrese Pacherri Gamberi, Asparagi E Pancetta Gnocchi Al Trionfo di Bosco If you go because of this review tell them the 5 Americans from Hawaii say Hi!

The quality of the ingredients is absolutely incredible, so fresh and tasty. Focaccia perfectly cooked and even the bruschetta (trust me is not easy to find a real bruschetta and focaccia in Edinburgh). The abundance of every dish left us full and happy. Amazing pasta too and the chef was stellar. Strongly suggested

Hadn't changed in any way other than this time we were served by a lovely Scottish 'lass'. Service was, as expected, brilliant. Food, not necessary to say, but excellent. Only one down in that the coffee machine was kaput. Now that is a real let down in an Italian restaurant. However, a lovely first evening for us in Scotland. Makes me wish we were still there.

Giancarlo's opened before Christmas and I have to say I was sceptical as Tranent wouldn't be my choice of location for a smart family Italian restaurant. My partner and I decided to go for lunch and were instantly impressed. Service was fab, so friendly and made you feel at home, typical Italian welcome which I love. The atmosphere was relaxed, the restaurant itself is decorated beautifully and so clean! Love the huge woodfired oven and the fact you can watch the chefs do their magic! And oh the food, I came expecting not much and had that wonderful experience of being completely wrong!! They have a lunch deal, two courses for £10. We had mussels to start, fantastic portion size, delicious cream and white wine sauce and plenty of bread. I then had a margarita pizza, just fancied it and I know it's the boring option but honestly this was the best one I've had in Scotland. Delicious fresh dough base and the tomato sauce was just to die for, so flavoursome and to top it all off, proper buffalo mozzarella, generously heaped on top and cooked to perfection! For me this is pizza heaven. Looking around the rest of their menu seems not to disappoint and I can't wait to go back and try some pasta and pretty much everything else!!!! If you find yourself in this neck of the woods then this place is a must! Delizioso!!

Being Gluten Free, my unhealthy world was somewhat limited until the move to the Burgh. Yes Findlay's, the saviour of my hangover's, I love you! From mucho varieties of sausage (herby, plain, pork, beef, Italian, Spanish just to name a few) to white and black puddings and haggis, there are lots of options for the gluten free gourmet. Have tried four varieties of the sausages, they are fab. All perfectly flavoured and packed full of meat, unlike the 'evil' supermarket versions which are packed full of non meaty extras. The black pudding is just perfect - lightly spiced (not overpowering like some versions) and has converted some non pud eaters, so the requests for some to be despatched West have been received. The daddy of them has to be the haggis. Didn't make it to Findlay's for my own GF Burns' supper, but hell, I'm Scottish and always have whiskey in the bottle, so Burns' night is now April. Gorgeously, moist and spiced haggis, which hasn't dried out as cheaper versions do - just pure class :-) Prices are reasonable too, instead of the usual 'its GF so we'll massively overcharge you for it because we know you'll pay it', it was about £2.50 for black pudding and around £4 for haggis but I bought a few different things at the time so don't quote me exactly on this! Well worth a visit - they have a good reputation for 'normal' products, but for GF products, they are fab :-D

So today I found myself in Musselburgh (in the physical rather than spiritual sense)…read more There was something quite unusual about standing eating an ice cream whilst I could see my breath, but it was a most satisfying experience. My folks had been here many times, but I'm brand new to the great Musselburgh ice cream wars, so I decided to try both of the village favourite parlours. Such indulgence, I know. To compare the two establishments is like choosing between a Lamborghini and a Maserati. Both are fabulous, but whilst the Maserati has a more subtle elegance, the Lambo is more "in your face". This was my experience with the ice cream flavours. The S. Luca ones were great, but definitely more light compared to the fuller flavour of DiRollo. I had a double cone with Peanut Butter Crunch (a smooth Peanut Butter Ice Cream with crunchy chocolate covered nut pieces) as well as the absolute standout Turkish Delight ice cream which was gorgeous. I'd never have thought Turkish Delight would go sooooo well with ice cream, but it was a winner. No matter which flag you fly in the ice cream war, Musselburgh can count itself very lucky to have two such fantastic parlours.

Hands down, my response for the past 25 *cough cough* years has been Luca's. I wouldn't even sniff in the direction of Di Rollo's. But... you know what, time can change the old taste buds, and I can definitely say now that I have more than a little love for Di Rollo. It tastes creamier, I like the different flavours (raspberry ripple for the win! As is coconut). So now I tend to walk on the wild side, my opinions change, and I go against the tide of Luca's fans. We decided to choose Pizza Express because it was more formal than Nando's and less casual than Five Guys. We booked a table online the day before because we knew it would be rammed and we were right! It was packed to the rafters, with our specially reserved table waiting for us. To start, we had the famous dough balls with garlic butter to share and they were really good! I could eat those things all day every day, but if I did, I would be the size of a dough ball! I had a margarita pizza for my main and it was good as usual. Nice and hot! In the Ocean Terminal restaurant, it has always been stone cold but here it is fresh out of the oven and ready to eat. For dessert, I had the winter special, the chocolate fondant. It was amazing! So creamy and rich, made even better by the Neapolitan ice cream it was served with. Our waitress was friendly and efficient but our food was very slow to come out. Must have been the dinner rush. The toilets were a bit stinky, probably because the baby changing table is in with the gents which is a stupid idea because it makes the bathrooms really messy! It would be better in the disabled or in its own room. But overall, we had a good experience and will be dining here again.
