How exactly do you rate a place like Capri? Is it unfair to expect the quality that you might from a major metropolitan city? Probably. You're in the desert. But this isn't just any desert town: this is Marfa, Tx. The prices and decor set you up for the extraordinary on all levels, but Capri simply fell short on food and service. I have nothing to complain about the setting: exquisite.The food was indeed very good, though it missed the mark on nuance. The pickle platter was spicy and pungent but came with nothing to offset the heat or balance the acid. The biggest problem was that the portions simply didn't warrant the prices. And the service -- albeit friendly -- was spotty. That said, like many establishments in Marfa, you pay for the experience and the visual appeal -- an escape from ordinary life. In a far-flung desert town, vulnerable to a fickle economy and dependent on intermittent tourism, restaurants have to make up for slow spells and a limited supply of potential restaurant professionals. So we relished our long evening on the patio, waiting for silverware and napkins that never came, and ate the small but delicious portions with our fingers. read more

WOW! This place is a must. The bar really makes you feel like you're in the west. I asked if they had blue cheese olives for my martini. I've been here twice. First time during the opening weekend of the Robert Irwin installation and the second time during Trans-Pecos. The first time was a courtesy experience, the bartender was helpful in recommending mezcal. The second time, it wasn't busy, it was in the afternoon, and our party of 2 sat at the bar ignored. One night in marfa and chose to come here for drinks and appetizers, terrible mistake. Had to seat ourselves. Finally they came to take our order, but that even took awhile to get drinks. Our appetizers came out all at different times when we ordered them together. The waiter seemed like he absolutely hated his job, would walk right by us without asking us if we wanted another drink or anything. We had to stop him just to get water. Mediocre Food, Abysmal Service, Great Ambiance. I just visited Marfa again for the 5th time and visited Capri for the first time. The service here is absolutely horrible, which is s shame because the location and decor/design of this place is really special. If you're going to present an upscale and refined experience (and a $62 steak), your service should rise to the occasion as well. I would recommend NOT going here until management makes a concerted effort to improve the overall experience. read more

Terrible. Don't waste your time or money!! Outdoor dining full of voracious mosquitoes. We ordered a 48 ounce ribeye, which was intended to feed all three of the adults in my group, for $72. The steak was delicious, but at least half of the plate was fat. Not that it was well marbled. I know ribeye. There was the steak (much less than 48 ounces as promised) and beside it were globs of fat - baseball sized globs of fat. No sides included. Menu is a la carte. Arrived here just before closing time on a Friday afternoon (right around 3:00pm) - many of their menu items were sold out (understandably so). However, there were still some seemingly delicious options available. The two gals I was with both ordered the salami sandwich and thoroughly enjoyed it. Amazing local goat cheese and peppers. I ordered the panko crusted pork loin and it was delightful! Service was good - I also didn't mind the Waylon Jennings tunes playing from the kitchen. The reviews looked good. I give it one star for a cool hipster atmosphere and the decor. We walked in and noticed most people were sitting at the bar. There were several tables waiting for service. We watched on couple reviewing their menus , they waited about 10 minutes and left. We were patient but saw one server who smiled as she walked by but never greeted or asked for a drink order. We finally left. They had a sign that said lunch, but I think this is more of a bar than a restaurant and they seemed ok to watch people walk-out as they were making plenty off the bar. read more

Beautiful ambiance and wonderful waitress (shout out to her for handling all the tables herself on a busy night), but the food was wayyyyy overpriced and they were already out of BREAD and one of FIVE main plates by 8pm... $8 for 4 anchovies and $62 for their steak... Tacos with chapulines were awful and neither the grasshoppers nor the tortillas were prepared on site (I've had them before so it's not simply me being weirded out), and the yucca blossoms were mediocre at best. This place is absolutely beautiful! Seems as though it can be used for events in the town, but I digress. The drinks were yummy! I had the hibiscus margarita and it was perfect mix of sour with a bit of sweet and the hubs had a drink with gin, lemon juice and prosecco; the name escapes me but it's probably because I was so enamored with the decor and garden area outside. The bartenders were very friendly and even the other people seated at the bar. We went on a Wednesday around 6:30 and there were only a few people there but that didn't make or break the experience! (Just FYI, Mon-Wed most of the city is actually at a stand still, I would say the best time to visit this super cute town would be Thurs-Sun.) We sat in the garden around a small fire pit and just took in the scene. They normally offer food, but on this day we were told that they didn't have any food for the week due to lack of chefs. Menu changes daily, but I (vegetarian- eggs/cheese ok) can always find at least one entree (Kale, pumpkin soup, etc) that tastes great. Full bar with bartenders who know what to do with it. Tables for large groups outside on enclosed large patio or inside in the lounge area. Lounge is a quieter,darker room with large couches. I almost feel like this place deserves three stars based on two factors, the building which is awesome, and the cocktails which are lovely. This reminds me of a place I'd see and tolerate while in Manhattan-where ya know-you're overwhelmed by the city and your cab ride just cost you $50 because the businessman you agreed to split it with just dipped out and didn't pay. We had such high hopes when we walked in, it looks like just our kinda place, and I get it Marfa is kinda an anomaly...an art destination in the middle of nowhere so there's definitely going to be some folks with money to burn...but we were actually looking for food, which I suppose you'd say "why didn't you just get up and leave" well...because...we sat down and it took quite a while for a server to even show up, and after waiting ten or fifteen minutes we didn't want to just leave. Someone mentioned "tapas" or "small plates" but in my non-bourgeois world what is on the menu is really just "snacks" so basically just at $50 for two cocktails and some cheese and bread (I'm a chesse fan too-so don't get me wrong, I appreciate a good cheese but...) So ya know-after dropping $50 we ended up having to load up on junkfood from the gas station because we were still starving and we'd wasted our window of opportunity to actually get food in town and everything was now closed. So much potential-but I'd still drop in for a $15 cocktail and get that dizzy feeling of being in a big city while being in a Texas bordertown. read more

Worst food I've ever had, I took one bite and nearly threw up. We didn't get offered a drink they just brought us a small cup of water and never came back to ask if we wanted more. We weren't sure if it was because of how we looked or why, but they didn't even bother to stop when we looked at them. We had to even walk up to them to give us our ticket. Was excited to try Capri as it was not open on our last visit here in the 2014. The food was amazing - we tried almost everything but the biscuits with butter and the salami sandwich were standouts! On the other hand - the complete asshole behind the counter - see hipster vest and sunglasses guy - continues his douche ways as mentioned in prior posts. He was a turn off and needs a manners class. Even in mid-afternoon in mid-August, there was a light breeze for us to enjoy a fantastic meal (my kale salad and the gulf shrimp starter were delicious and my teenage daughter loved her vegetarian sandwich). The setting is so lovely; I would love to go back in the fall or spring and enjoy lingering in the hammocks among the flowers.
