Yesterday I had the pleasure of going to one of the best shops in Houston. I love the direction this shop is headed with the roaring 20s theme. The "by appointment" format they have ensures you're in and out of the shop in a reasonable amount of time. The staff is warm and friendly. When I called to schedule an appointment, I didn't feel like I was bothering anyone. They were eager to help. However, I recommend setting your appointment up on Yelp. It's fast and informative. Marchell was my barber. He's a cool guy and it was nice to have a barber that I could chat with. He asked the right questions in order to provide a quality cut. I splurged a little and got the "Bosses Cut and Shave". It was a great experience. Initially we struggled to get my line right (the most important part), but this was mostly my fault because of miscommunication. When we got on the same page, he delivered exactly what I wanted. I appreciated his patience as we figured it out. He ended the cut with a facial and a quick shoulder massage (he uses a machine), which made me feel like a boss! The prices are reasonable and I hope they maintain this. I hate I just discovered this place since I'm leaving Houston soon. But while I'm here, they've secured my business. read more

It's probably a bit cliche to put the Official Yelp Description in your review, but seriously - "Woohoo! As good as it gets!™". I'm a serial 'strip center chain haircut' guy. Great Clips, TGF, Sports Clips, etc. It's pretty simple to cut my hair - short on the sides and clean up the top - but I've never been satisfied. I'm always left wanting something...more. I happened across Capone's when I was next door at Pinot's Palette for a Yelp event and made a note to check out the reviews to see their rating. Finding that other patrons loved it here (and the fact that it's a Houston institution, being open since the 60's I believe), I decided to try it out. I made an appointment with Chris (forgot to mention the ridiculously easy reservation system online) and showed up about 10 minutes early. I mentioned that I'd always missed something from other places? Chris took the time to answer all of my questions, explaining pro's and con's of different cuts. Some of you may not need this, but it immediately instilled confidence and I felt at ease. The conversation flowed easily, especially after Chris offered me a glass of bourbon. Houston restaurants? Check. Sports? Yep. I even jabbed a bit at Chris when he told me that his favorite team is the Cowboys, and he didn't even nick me with the straight-edge razor. Real stand up guy. Bottom line: One of my favorite haircuts, and exactly what I've been looking for in a barbershop. I hope that online system can make scheduled appointments, because I'll be going back. read more

unprofessional and poorly managed. You book online, you get a flood of reminders throughout the week about your appointment. You show up on time and you still wait for another 45 min. This weekend was the last straw. I booked the last appointment of the day for my barber. I was running 10 min late. I called and informed him I'm running few minutes late. He said no problem just don't be too late. Showed up and looks like he was behind more than me! It took him another 30 min to finish then he tells me another guy showed up earlier for his appointment and he'll do him ahead of me! I was the last appointment! While cutting this guy's hair, he was stopping every few minutes texting for few minutes and taking his time. totally unprofessional. An hour passed by and I decided to Yelp another barber, drove their, and got a very good hair cut. Capone barbershop; cutting a hair is not rocket science. There are tons of options out there. A little humility and professionalism can go along ways keeping your customers happy and loyal. read more

While visiting from out of town, I stumbled upon what seemed to be a gem. Rather than book an appointment through the app from the parking lot, I walked inside to see if they had any availabilities. I was told no, and that they were booked up for the entire day. Went back to my car and checked the app to find two appointments available just two hours later. The shop looks great and seems to be very well received by its regular customers, but I'll never know myself because I chose hubris and decent customer service over a good hair cut. read more

Best Barbershop in Houston. For the last 12 years, I have shaved my head because it is easy and my hair is thick, coarse and very difficult to cut to any particular style. I finally decided to grow it out a few months ago and was in search of a barbershop that would know what to do with my hair. After about 5 failed attempts at other barbershops that charged way too much for terrible service, I was ready to give up...then I met Chris. I told Chris about my background and that I was at wit's end with my hair. Chris rose to the occasion and gave me the best haircut I have ever had in my life and I have been back ever since on a bi-weekly basis. I usually blend my hair on the sides to the top starting with a 1.5 and leave the top long. There are never any lines, everything is sharp, and it is a great all around cut. These guys know what they are doing, all of them. I haven't seen anyone leave this shop displeased or disgruntled. If you are looking for a great barbershop, look no further....the cut is $17! I have looked, you will not find a better haircut for that price..hell you won't find one for triple that price. Don't be lazy, MAKE AN APPOINTMENT!!!!! Don't be late. Bunch of senior citizens with shaky hands. I should have walked out as soon as I saw one of them with clip on suspenders. They gave me a spotty fade with bald patches on the side. I could have done a better job if I cut my hair myself blindfolded using my feet. Not sure how I'll be able to fix it now. Whats more, I've been growing my beard for 2 months and he trimmed the whole thing to a 1 with no detail. He tried to tell me it looks good. In summary, stay the fuck away!!! Update: I ended up going to Katz Barbershop and they spent an hour fixing the patches of bald areas etc. -- it's sort of fixed.. will take 3 or 4 days for the bald patches to fill in and Katz said they can refade it. They even fixed the beard! Anyhoo.. Lesson learned. I also learned Capone's used to be Kirby's (I think) but recently changed owners and staff.. So that explains the other reviews. If you care about how you look you'll stay away from this place. read more

There are so many overpriced places in Houston for barbershops. I have been going here for about 8 months or so. I only go to get a hot lather shave done, the cost is $20 plus tip; cash only. By far the best price for a hot lather shave (hot & cold towel, face lotions) and the service you get anywhere in town. Its great chatting and banter about Houston sports there as well. I have only used Chris McGruder, if you are a beard guy you will see that man does wonders; hes very good at what he does. When you go to a barber for a long time one of two things happen. 1) They get in a groove and continue to kill it until you can't go in anymore or, 2) They get complacent and the quality of their work falls off to the point of you having to find someone else to do the job well. I've only been here twice. Once was pretty good, I got one of the deluxe type haircut/beard trim with hot towel treatment. Very relaxing. Do like I did, do it for your birthday. Treat yoself! Second time wasn't as good... I just wanted a quick haircut. Different barber, dull scissors... Late seeing me (30 minutes) Kinda annoying. Just find the one you like. Marsell did pretty good. Gentle with the straight razor. Nice demeanor Good conversation. BUT DON'T EXPECT TO GET A LAST MINUTE SPOT. Book an appointment a week ahead. Call to confirm. When you get there you'll notice how many times people will call asking to be seen that day. But the seats are all booked! they don't have a desk person to deal with phones. SW Houston has a lot of men's "grooming boutiques" that are nothing but overpriced barber shops. Capone's is an answer to the overpriced clip joints. By far the best value is the hot lather shave for $20. Your face is massaged with hot lotions and hot towels, topped of with a hot lather shave, more lotions and towels. It is so relaxing I fall asleep in the chair everytime. There is not a better shave deal in town. read more

Capone's has a somewhat old fashioned feel to it. I have only been to one of the barbers but he is very good. I always appreciate it when they actually look at my hair a the end to make sure it is not lopsided. I tried a somewhat new style this last time and it looks great. Much better than the place I was going before, some supercuts or something. Best part is, it is the same price. $17 for a men's haircut. Plus they shave your neck with hot lather and a straight razer. Hot lather just feels awesome if you haven't tried it before. It's not as convenient for me, but since I can schedule an appointment online it makes it a lot easier. I would definately recommend trying capones out. They have better service and better cuts for the same price. Plus you can be sure you have the same barber every time if you want. read more

I needed a shave and hair cut to get cleaned up for a date night with my wife. A quick yelp search helped me find this place. I booked online, which is very easy and really nice for a person who doesn't like waiting in line for an hour to get a haircut. I loved the look of this place, old school barber shop all the way. Good conversation, nice people and high quality cut and shave. I believe I will be throwing away my loyalty cards for those corporate hair cutting places now. Hard to get an appointment but great guys. Love the atmosphere they make you feel at home and always hook it up. Mark and Chris ( the only two barbers I've used there) always do a great job. Most of the time I walk in and just say clean me up. Mark, the owner, is a retired marine. I'll always try and support someone who has supported this country when possible. He's always extremely prompt. If you have a 3:30, you'll be in the chair getting your hair cut at 3:30. Chris is an extremely outgoing person and makes you feel welcome and laugh, I'm on the younger side so I prefer a fade and Chris can do some CLEAN fades. The man is a drip god with the clippers. I walk out of there feeling like a million bucks, especially when I get a shave. read more

The experience was bittersweet. I got an excellent haircut from Luis and everyone else at the shop was very friendly. They have barbers of different ages and races and they know what they are doing. There is a previous review by someone saying he was treated rudely by barber Mark Dugat bc he was a new customer. Since it was my first time here, the treatment I got from Mark was no different. When I asked him if they usually go by appointment or walk-ins, he walked past me grumbling under his breath at me. As he continued to do so outside while giving me the stink eye and shaking his head in annoyance, I sat there completely confused at why this guy was so upset. I am sure Mark probably gives excellent haircuts since apparently he has been working there for 2 years. However, I find this a miracle due to the way he treats new faces. Despite all this, Capone's is the best barber shop I have been to in Houston - just watch out for Mark and his hostile attitude. read more

(Sigh) I really wanted to like this place. I really really wanted to like this place. After two days of letting my facial hair grow, I got on Yelp in search of a Friday afternoon hot shave. I called at 2:45pm for a 3:30 appt and while Mark who answered the phone said he was booked, Marcel could do it. I show up promptly and Marcel is just finishing up with a haircut. The place is not fancy, a little dated, but none of that matters when you get great service and personality of the barbers. When I got in the chair, there were a few customers, the barbers and Mr Bill the porter in resident. The talk was currently on the state of the Texans, so I didnt engage because I am not much of a fan. I commented to Marcel about the Jazz that was playing and he said it was on Pandora. One of the other barbers jumped in and mentioned Thelonius Monk and the Marsalis brothers. Then the conversation took an interesting turn. Somehow they begin to talk about all the black celebs who married white women. What happened next could have been a barber shop scene from Eddie Murphy's, "Coming to America". Everyone started chiming in with who they knew was married to a white wife . Then one of the barbers mentioned what site he saw the information on. Then they begin to kid each other. Now, let me say this. There was white, black, asian, young and old represented and everyone was laughing. I have had some great hot shaves, the best of which is still Aidan Gills in NOLA. Thats the standard and its hard to beat. Multiple layers of hot towels, lotions and potions and an incredibly close shave. Marcel started me off with hot cream, followed by hot towel, then repeated. After the third lather, he begin to shave with a straight razor and was slow and meticulous. The problem was it still wasnt close enough and I could tell my face was beginning to rash. Speaking of Eddie Murphy, I think it was one of the Beverly Hills Cop or 48 hour movies where bad guy has Eddie pushed up against the wall and is shouting in close proximity to his face. Eddie's character then lets villian know that he has a whole box of tic tacs in his pocket and to please reach in and take one....or the whole box. Point is, Marcel could have used a tic tac while breathing in my face during the shave. After we finished, I got the antiseptic tonic splash that usually stings like shit and then I decided to sit and finish reading the newspaper. Marcel offered me a beer and gladly accepted since it was now past 4 on a Friday afternoon. I wanted to like this place so much that maybe I will give it another try. At $17, the price was certainly right but I expected/wanted more! read more

I have been going to this shop for decades. Recently I decided to dump my cartridge razor and join the wet shaving ranks. I called Mark at the shop and asked to arrange a time to come talk to him about wet shaving because I knew next to nothing. He graciously told me to come by at any time that was convenient for me. I went by last Friday and he chatted with me while he was finishing up with a customer. Then he took 10 or 15 minutes to personally show me the products he sells, explain the differences and features of each, and recommend items to me. Although I had read much online and watched some videos on YouTube, I appreciated the personal touch and help more than anything. I'm loyal to Capone's. read more

Mark Dugat has been cutting my hair after Kirby left. Capone's used to Kirby's Memorial Barbershop. I only go to barbershops, not salons. If it doesn't have the red & white pole, I don't go in. Mark knows how to cut my hair, the back grows faster than the sides, so he adjust the razors. One of the few barbershops that still use the warm shaving cream and straight edge. The back and shoulder massage at the end is a nic touch. BTW, they also offer full-service shoe shines. I recommend that you book your appointments. read more

Bring cash. Make an appointment. They try to accommodate walk ins. But they do take time with each customer so you may not get worked in. Also, pay attention. I got skipped once and walked out which costs it the one star for me. I believe it was just an honest mistake skipping me but I was still annoyed. Mark has cut my hair and Marchell (spelling?). Each guy takes his time. The original owner I believe works a couple days during the week. That might be the other mention of senior citizens. This place and that guy have been there since the mid 60's I believe. So I can imagine quite a few "antiques" being there in the mornings. I think that is a cool thing. It is right by my work, so as long as I am working there mark will be cutting my hair. But each guy knows what they are doing and has their own loyal clients. Very diverse ethnicity of barbers and clients. An old white guy can get a flat top and a young black guy can get a fade. That's harmony people. :-) read more
