Everyone knows that in Real Estate three things matter: Location, Location, Location. This could not be more true of Capitola Hotel. Is this the nicest hotel you can find around Santa Cruz / Capitola / Aptos? No. Does this hotel have the best beach views? No. Is this hotel the best overall value for family looking for a beach weekend? No. Instead, if you and your partner are looking for a phenomenal location, super cute rooms, great service, and a location that is unbelievable, then you should stay here. The hotel has a bit of a B&B vibe, but each room has its own bathroom, and there is no need to share space with other guests. The rooms are small, but cozy and clean. There is "OK" WiFi, a mini-fridge, a TV, etc. We booked the "Nevis" room, as it is the only room with an Ocean View. (The View is across the center of the village, but still, you can see and hear the ocean. If you want Ocean View / Ocean Front, this is not your hotel.) The main reason to stay at Capitola Hotel is to come to the Village, park your car, and be done with the car for the duration of your stay. EVERYTHING is within walking distance or a short Uber. You can hit the shops, the restaurants, the beach, the bars, etc. with a short flip-flop walk from the front door. If you book early, they have garage parking, which is EPIC in Capitola Village. They also have beach chairs, umbrellas, etc. that you can use free of charge. There's coffee and lite breakfast in the morning, and happy hour in the evening. My wife's comment after we settled in was literally, "OK, you need to book this room, for this weekend, every year, for the next ten years." read more

Third review from our third visit and it's the best yet. We had the Grand Bahama this time and it looks like the bathroom was freshly renovated. Back left corner room near the rear exit for those who are better with directions than names. Nice large toilet area no issue this time as in the last two rooms. Only regret is we only stayed one night because I had to get back to work on a Sunday. Excellent first year wedding anniversary gift! I also screwed up and left my mohair sweater there and they are mailing it. Can't beat that service! read more

This was meh/okay. We stayed for two nights in the Antigua room which was on the first floor. The room was clean, not overly dated, with laminate or vinyl flooring, nice bedding. The mattress and pillows were not to my liking. Shutters that did not do the best job keeping out the light. We could not hear neighbors much so that's a plus. Ear plugs were provided just in case but we did not need them. The room had a closet with hangers, iron, but no ironing board, lacked storage for clothing that could not be hanged. There were two small side tables and outlets only on one of the tables. The TV was a smaller, older model Vizio - not a smart TV and no options to cast. There is a hair dryer and the hotels "signature" hand soap, lotion, body wash. I believe the hand soap and body wash are one in the same. The scent reminded me of strawberries and cigarettes. Slippers and robes provided. Towels were nice quality. Continental breakfast provided and coffee brewed fresh. Half and half and 2% milk were available but no dairy free option at the coffee station. I did not like the ice box situation. It was an ice chest located outside in the courtyard area with a scooper placed inside. I had concerns about how sanitary that was, grossed myself out & ended up getting sick. A parking pass is provided if needed. Lots of places to shop and eat nearby and the beach is walking distance. The location is stellar. I do, however, think that overall, the value of the room and hotel for what we paid was lacking. read more

Manager, Your statement is false. I called your front desk on 09/16 to confirm our reservation and was told it has already been cancelled. We did not ask to cancel the room, but it was cancelled anyway. We were also told we were not able to rebook the room. On 09/18, at 6:00pm on the day we were supposed to arrive, your staff called to ask if we were still coming. OF COURSE WE WERE NOT COMING BECAUSE YOU ALREADY CANCELLED OUR ROOM WITHOUT OUR PERMISSION! Interestingly, you also charged my credit card on 09/16, two days before we were even supposed to check in. It appears to me that you would rather collect "cancellation fees" than actually rent rooms. read more

This hotel looks adorable on the site. It really has a lot of potential but needs some serious TLC. Rooms are way smaller in reality. We had the room downstairs with the two queens and little kitchenette. The bathroom wasn't very clean, there were huge cobwebs and the floor was absolutely filthy. I took a wet towel to the floor because we noticed our feet were extremely dirty and it was horrifying. Also our TV didn't work and the complimentary breakfast should be called a complimentary snack bar. Side note: be aware it is directly across from all the restaurants so it can get pretty noisy. I feel like with better maintenance and a remodel this place could be cute. Severely overpriced for what you get. read more

We had one night here on our way up the coast after getting off a cruise ship in SoCal. Location is perfect. The room was small but had everything we needed. Boutique hotel with no more than a dozen rooms. Friendly people, clean rooms. Obviously as a Boutique hotel, it won't have all the amenities as a large chain, but it was a nice quiet getaway by the beach. I have already recommended this place to people I know. The staff is very nice and accommodating. the Sand Bar across the street plays live music late nearly every night i believe, which is a double edged sword. It's a fun place, but i could hear all the music in my room since it faces that way. It honestly didn't bother me, though. You can walk to anything close, i didn't move my car after I parked. You can pay an upcharge for a prime parking stall, or they'll give you a parking pass to park on the street in the metered parking. Also there is a little courtyard you can sit in if you want to be away from people, but want to be outside. read more

My wife and I took some time off together for our anniversary as well as my birthday this month. We love visiting Capitola and always have a great time there! While we were there, my wife accidentally spilled some washable make up on the sheets. There's nothing in the room to clean something like that, but we assumed they wash the sheets after each visit, it shouldn't be a big deal, so we left it visible for them to see it. Well they decided to charge us $500 for 'damages' to the linens before even attempting to wash them. If I had known, i would have just washed them at a laundry mat and saved myself 500 bucks. I'd hate to assume they don't change out the sheets if we slept in that bed. Bring your own linens or make sure any 'stains' you leave aren't visible. We will not be recommending this hotel to anyone. read more

I recently booked a trip here for my girlfriend's birthday & love the experience every time. Rooms are perfect walking distance & affordable parking with a garage but the staff were the highlight. My man and I came to Capitola Hotel this weekend and even though it was extremely clean and cute, we will never stay there again. For almost $900 for a 2 night stay we had a 11x11 sq ft room which is smaller than our kids room and the bed was so uncomfortable we barely slept. When we complained to the front desk their answer was turning the mattress and then accusing us of smoking in the room which we Most Certainly Did NOT! We had no view of the ocean and even though parking was paid for we had to find our own parking any where we could which was not easy. If you want to go to Capitola look up capitola Beach rentals and rent an entire house for the same Price as our crappy room at the Capitola Hotel! read more

My husband and I stayed for 1 night at this cute boutique hotel. The location is perfect and in the heart of so many great restaurant. The beach is walking distance and the location couldn't be more perfect. I am giving this hotel 4 stars do to how small rooms are and pricing for rooms. When staying at a boutique hotel it is expected you will be paying a little more but at $450 a night was a little steep for such a small room. Overall I would recommend this room for anyone who has a little bit of extra money to splurge on a room. If your looking at a two nights stay then get ready to pay close to 1k. read more

Awful customer service! Booked a room on a Saturday for the following day. (Approx 24hrs in advance.)At the time I booked there were six rooms available for the Sunday night we intended to stay. That very night my son was up all through the night vomiting so I called to cancel our stay the day of. The gal on the phone said that they could not issue a refund but would speak with the manager on potentially giving us a credit, great! A week and a half went by with no communication. (& I didn't follow up because myself and the rest of my family got sick, norovirus.) Finally I was emailed to tell me they could not issue a credit. While I understand their policy of a 7day cancellation policy for a hotel that only has 10 rooms.. I booked only 24hrs in advance, they had six rooms still available when I booked, and at the time I cancelled they still had 3 rooms vacant. It's not as if they were losing out on booking that room. I would have been perfectly happy with a credit for a Sunday night. It is clear they wanted to capitalize on our misfortune. It has become very clear to me why they had so many rooms available for such a small hotel during peak season. Go across the street and book a room at the Venetian hotel. Fabulous customer service and steps from the beach. Wish I would have read these reviews before booking, I wouldn't have done it. Lesson learned! read more

My sister surprised me with the gift of a night's stay here and I was excited to spend some time in the village. The location is great - centrally located and walking distance to shops, restaurants and beach front. We stayed in the Grand Cayman room facing the street and although earplugs were provided, they really weren't necessary - there was little street noise. The room was small but well-appointed and comfortable. I would have considered a higher rating but the young man working at the front desk really drove me nuts. He seemed irritated when I walked in the office to check in, causing him to have to pull out his ear buds. He didn't know where the nearest ATM was, was fuzzy on the parking policy, and generally seemed clueless or indifferent about local amenities. More attention paid to the front counter and customer service would warrant another star. read more

WE Had previously stayed at this hotel about 7 or 8 years ago......... HOWEVER...... our most recent stay , of June 16, 2022...........WAS HORRIBLE !! WE WON'T BE GOING BACK...... They owner is a cheap, money grabbing, poor response asshole!! We made a reservation for June 16, 2022. We checked in and our room and we were directed up a flight of stairs. If you have a disability, this hotel is not for you. THERE ARE KNOW ELEVATORS THAT I SAW. They have a few rooms on the lower floor but they are very limited. All the rooms are small. The lobby closes at 10pm and there is no one there after 10pm. Around 2:30am, while we were sound asleep, the smoke detector started ringing like crazy. I attempted to climb up on the bed, but the beds are really low to the floor.......plus the mattress is horrible. Not what you would expect for the money you pay for this box room. I was able to remove the smoke detector from the ceiling, but I could not get the alarm to stop ringing. I tried to locate a battery in the detector, but the unit appeared to be sealed. I couldn't stop it from ringing. I removed everything out of the small frig in the room. I placed the alarm in the frig, with two blankets and a pillow...... anything to make it stop with loud ringing. The frig wouldn't close all the way, so I removed one of the blankets and placed my sweatshirt in the frig. I was able to close the frig door but I could only silence the ringing a little bit. I was able to muffle the sound somewhat, but you could still hear it ring through the frig. Finally around 5:30is am, the sucker finally STFU. In the morning I went down and explained what happened. The front desk person apologized. I gave him the defective smoke detector. He said that he would contact the owner , possibly for some type of adjustment. I waited several weeks, but never heard from the owner. I called back after 3 weeks had passed and was told again, that the owner would be contacting me and for me to be patient. I received an email from the owner, several weeks later, telling me that I should have contacted the number on the door of my room or the one in the hotel lobby. I explained, that I was never informed of any emergency phone numbers. No one ever mentioned any emergency numbers when I checked in. This room was more than $400.00 a night. The ROOMS ARE SMALL. THE BATHROOMS ARE FOR MIDGETS. THE BEDS SUCK AND YOU ARE ALMOST SLEEPING ON THE FLOOR BECAUSE THE BEDS ARE SO LOW. I would suggest that if you do go to the hotel from hell, that you bring your own toiletries and towels. You might also want to bring pillows. The pillows also suck. It has been over 2 months and I have had no other contact from the owner. They have not reached out to me. I have video ,for anyone who wants to view the entire night at this HELL HOLE........ Everything I have posted is true. I got videos and emails. I suggest that you SLEEP IN YOUR CAR, RATHER THAN THE CAPITOLA HOTEL........YOU WILL GET A BETTER NIGHTS SLEEP AND SAVE YOURSELF OVER $400.00. Worst hotel experience of my life... read more

This hotel is ideal if you plan on rolling around the beach while getting piss drunk and don't care about hygiene. I made the mistake of going with my wife and kids. On the outside it looks nice, but inside of our room "grand cayman", had an attic door that was unlocked. (Most likely used for storage; no other access to that storage besides the door above our beds) We ended up getting bit by a storm of fleas, infected our house, and we ended up having to exterminate and burn everything from Capitola. No we don't have pets, and never had a problem like this before. As a courtesy, I notified the hotel, but there is no acknowledgement nor a response. I understand if we are paying 60/night, but this hotel was like 300+/night. Definitely should've stayed at a corporate hotel which had protocols in place for handling clean up between customers. To MANAGEMENT: get with it. I'm pretty sure if the health department stopped by, they'd see a lot of things that shouldn't be in the hotel. Please revisit local and/or state rules and regulations pertaining cleanliness as well as pest control. read more

This spot isn't bad. It's not the worst I've stayed at and not the best I've stayed at. My BFF and I shared a king size bed this past weekend. It was a cute room and I slept great. The hotel provided a small fan which I kept on all night to drain out any noise. The bathroom space is pretty narrow which made it difficult to change in there. There is no elevator so you'll have to lug your belongings up the stairs. Parking sucks! You find your own parking. They do provide a city parking badge if you find a metered parking. Keep in mind that you'll have to pay for parking once you check out of your room. It was a little pricy for the type of room provided but the location of this hotel is PERFECT. There's no ocean view from any of the rooms but it's literally across the street from the beach, Margaritaville, and all the other restaurants and shops. I would stay here again. read more

We stayed at the Capitola Hotel this past weekend. The rooms were small but clean and bright, but I felt taken advantage of. When we left they were unable to give us a bill. It was several days and a couple of phone calls later before I got the bill. It turned out that Sunday night was $100 more than Saturday for one room and $120 more for another room, a fact that had not been made clear to me. read more

We spent 1 night here while in the area for work, in the Martinique room with our dog. I prefer staying at small, boutique hotels over the cookie cutter chains when I can, and the Capitola Hotel is exactly the type of place I like. Julie at the front desk let us check in early which was so appreciated because I was tired as hell from our drive and work stops. Our room was cute, clean and comfy. It was a little small but definitely a fair tradeoff for the amazing location. I walked to a bomb af Mexican joint just around the corner for dinner, and I will definitely stay here again when the pandemic is over to enjoy more of the local flavors. I really felt compelled to review after seeing so many negative ones on here, because that was just not my experience at all. Of course with a location being so central to the action, it will not be quiet like a mediation retreat, but maybe I'm just a deep sleeper because I had no issues with noise. I found the rate to be perfectly reasonable especially considering I could bring my dog. I really could not see why others would rate this hotel so badly, and I'm relatively picky when it comes to accommodations, lol. read more

Perfect location in the middle of Capitola. This is a small boutique hotel that is perfect for a couple looking to get away quickly for a weekend with awesome customer service. They have covered garage style parking, if available, which is so nice in a city with hard to find parking. They also have free street parking as well. During the CZU Santa Cruz Fire evacuations, the county started handed out vouches to those of us who were evacuated during the disaster. Capitola Hotel was on the list of voucher hotels. Almost all hotels were on the list and residents and hotels/motels were more than willing to help out in any way they could to get a roof over evacuated families and those who had lost everything. Not the case for Capitola Hotel. When I contacted them about vouchers, they flat out pretended they didn't know what I was talking about and that "they had never heard about the vouchers." Hard to believe considering they are on the voucher list; it's common knowledge that all hotels are doing this; and that it's the talk on every news channel, newspaper, and radio station. My family and I were just inquiring about a place to use the voucher. What we got in a snobby rude tone was: "Sorry, I've never heard of that. Our rooms our $189-389 per night." The person on the other end didn't even have a moment of empathy or think for a second about what we may be going through. This place should be ashamed and you should not support a business who refuses to be a part of the community they are in and actually help out when they are needed instead of undermining all the great work other hotels are doing. I mean they get a voucher. They would be reimbursed. Instead, they immediately price gouge during a time of disaster and hardship. Sickening! read more

Capitola Hotel is top notch. The hotel is located perfectly in the middle of all the action of the esplanade. Park your car and you can walk everywhere in the area. Restaurants and bars are across the street. Capitola beach is also down the street. The young lady (Candace) working the front desk is very pleasant and helpful. The rooms are clean and comfortable. We always pay for upgraded parking where we park our car in their garage space. It's nice to know the car is off the street and worth the extra money. Beds are comfortable and the breakfast is pretty good. Thanks for making a short visit very relaxing. read more

Charming boutique hotel right in Capitola Village. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. Made sure we had towels when hearing we were headed to the beach and even loaned us 2 beach chairs. We stayed in the Nevis room which overlooked Esplanade and even had a glimpse of the ocean. It was on the smaller side but we knew that going in. It was clean and the bed, linens, and pillows were very comfortable. The soap, lotion, and shampoo had a wonderful scent. The light continental breakfast was fresh and just what we needed to start our day. In the afternoon enjoyed our wine in their garden courtyard with complimentary cookies. There was even an outdoor fireplace and water fountain in the courtyard which added to the great ambiance. We enjoyed being within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and the beach. When finding out we were celebrating a milestone anniversary they even left a cute gift box with 2 chocolates and a card that said "Happy Anniversary" in our room. Nice place, cool town, and friendly staff. But I would never stay there again. When you walk a hotel room and see earplugs - leave quickly. There is a reason. We stayed there on a Friday night in June. After a wonderful night walking around the beautiful town, we retired to our 2 rooms. My wife and daughter in one, son and I in other because the only room that would accommodate all 4 of us was booked. My room faces the street - nice view during the day, but faces several noisy bars at night. Loud crowds kept me up till 2:00 am. When the crowds dispersed, the bar clean up began - including the throwing buckets of beer bottles into the metal trash/recycling bins. The loud sound of crashing bottles lasted until 3:00 am. Kept my wife up too. At about 2:30 she texted me seeing if I was still-up. We went down to the lobby area and had a cup of tea while we chatted. Finally around 3:00 am all was quiet. so we were able to drift off not realizing that all that trash had to go somewhere. Sure enough, and a little before 6:00 am the garbage trucks came to collect the bottles and other trash. Another round of crashing and breaking glass. Just didn't work out well. They have coffee and danishes in the lobby and a little patio outside to relax in. It's right downtown in the old part of Capitola, so the location is ideal. Right by the beach too. But only stay there is you can sleep through all the noise. read more

First of all the STAFF at the Capitola Hotel is simply awesome. They tell you exactly where you can and can't park so you don't get a ticket from the ticket happy meter maids. The staff also gives you a free parking permit that allows you free parking in certain areas. The staff also gives you great recommendations of where to go, what to eat, and what to do in Santa Cruz too. Plus, free coffee & biscotti at 8am :) The hotel itself is extremely charming with all of it's character and tropical french country look. So freaking cute! I have never been in such a CLEAN hotel and every detail in the bathrooms and bedrooms haven't been overlooked. Our room had a flat screen t.v, view of the ocean, nice closet, reading over head lamps which you don't have to get up and turn off...the switch is on your head board (awesome). We also had a mini fridge, wood cutting board (cheese) and down pillows and comforter. The bathroom had makeup remover towelettes, q-tips, cotton, organic lotion, green tea shampoo & conditioner, a lit magnifying mirror, and petal stool sink. Need I mention the TWO shower heads in the shower! :) The restaurants are across the street, not even 10 yards, great delicious food, no need to drive! In the morning we grabbed a cup of coffee from the lobby and walked on Capitola's boardwalk....so clean and safe too. There's wine tasting, shopping, salt water taffy shops, and the VIEW! P.S. You get a free breakfast...not a continental breakfast either, you actually get to chose what you want to eat from the restaurant across the street :) Mmmmm! read more
