Took my daughter to Capitola for a belated birthday weekend and stayed at the Capitola Beach Suites. I was trying to be very specific with where we stayed as we wanted a great view of the ocean within walking distance of the shops and beach, all without spending an arm and a leg. Check-in was rocky. Their system was declining all of our cards even though we tried four different ones from different banks. Luckily, we had enough cash on hand to pay the balance. The outside of the building was pretty worn down and dirty and the parking spots were SUPER tight. However, Room 6 was absolutely adorable and clean and they had the rollaway bed we ordered ready to go inside the closet. The view was exactly what we were hoping for and we had easy access to the communal terrace! The fireplace on the terrace came in handy since it was chilly and they had latches placed just right on the sliding doors so you could leave it open to fall asleep to the sounds of the ocean, but still be secure and safe. Definitely willing to come back for another trip and would love to check out the top floor! read more

We booked our stay here for about a week. For the most part, we enjoyed our stay. We appreciated how close we were to the ocean as well as the views of the ocean from our room. The little kitchenette was very handy, especially when we wanted to heat up our leftovers. For our room (rm 8) specifically, we couldn't get the TV to work and the plug on the outlet to the lamp was always loose. Thusly, the lamp may or may not work depending on whether I'm paying attention to the plug being on the outlet. Due to our length of stay, we expected housekeeping to come through at some point to collect our trash and dirty towels. However, that was not the case. We had to walk down to the office to request for towels and bring them back to our room. Our trash was also overflowing due to the fact that nobody came by to take it out. There are no outlets near the bed (not a deal breaker but an inconvenience) and shampoo, conditioner and shower gel is provided in those push bottles attached to the shower wall. The building is located near a highway and is easily assessable from the back and front. Some concerns about privacy and security but we had no issues during our stay there. If you just want a place to stay with some basic amenities, this would be the place to be; otherwise, look elsewhere. read more

Back for another wonderful weekend in Capitola. This time we stayed in room 7. Full kitchen, small bathroom, shower is extremely small, if you are on the larger size, it will be a tight fit. Comfortable large bed. Everything was clean and nicely decorated. I will say it's too bad the bed does not face the ocean when you are in it. It would have been nice to watch the sun rise from bed, but the position is facing the street. If that is my only complaint, it's not that big of a deal. Room 7 does have garage parking, I have said it before, I will not stay here unless I get a room with garage parking. They are doing construction on the wharf the the normal 10 + parking spots just outside of the hotel are blocked due to construction. I believe it will be done mid-2024. Construction only happens Monday-Friday so we weren't affected by any noise. We came in Friday around 3PM and they were already done for the day. Stopped at the grocery store to stock up on snacks/drinks. The kitchen had everything we needed to prep food. If you plan on bringing food, bring ziplocks, foil, wrap if you need to save leftover. Room was stocked with baking dishes, pots/pans, silverware, wine opener, knives, dishes and glassware including wine glasses. As I have said before, no USB ports in the lamps/plugs, bring your adaptor. Extra pillows and a blanket, fan and iron/board in the closet. This will always be our go to location for the best price and ease to the Village. read more

My wife and I stayed one night at the Capitola Beach Suites. We had a mixed experience but we would consider staying again. We stayed in room 105, first floor close to the street. Pros -Location to shops and restaurants was excellent. The Esplanade was a short 5 minute stroll. No need to drive anywhere. -The room was large and cute. The kitchenette was nice, the refrigerator was cold, and the room was done up nice. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was gorgeous.Even though we were on the first floor over the carports, we had a great ocean view. -Eric was very nice and helpful. -The second floor open area with the fireplace was nice. We watched the full moon rise the night we were there. It's a very nice place to unwind. Cons -The room wall heater has an issue (room 105). There was absolutely no need for the heater during our stay. The thermostat was set to OFF but like most heaters of this type, the pilot light stayed on. However, up near the top of the heater, it was warm, very warm. It wasn't burn your hand warm but it was enough to make the room too warm and stuffy. Judging from the discoloration in the area of the unwanted heat, this has been doing this for a long time. I forgot to tell the staff about this but this is something they really need to look into. -Sleeping was tough due to the fact that the room was too warm due to the issue with the heater. A way to cool the room is to leave one or both of the sliding doors open but then that opens up a security concern. They do have a bar and a PVC pipe for use in blocking the doors from opening up too much. That's what we did but it still creeped us out having the slider open. I would suggest bringing a fan with you and running it while keeping the doors closed. -We found out that Friday is garbage day in this neighborhood...and it's delivery day, and load up the car day, and set off your car alarm day, and let's scream around the car day, and let's drive our loud car day....there is a lot of activity in the general vicinity of the hotel. Peaceful it is not. -There are a couple of stop signs at the intersection that the hotel is on. It's amazing how many knuckleheads have modified their vehicles to be EXTREMELY LOUD! If you're one of those knuckleheads reading this there has got to be a better way to spend your hard earned money than on loud exhaust. So again, this place ain't tranquil! Tips -There are a handful of carports available and assigned to specific rooms. This allows you to drive your car without much fear of somebody taking your spot. However, the spots are VERY narrow. The hotel elevator is located at the end of carport 7. If you're parked in and around this carport be aware that people will be dragging suitcases past your car. I couldn't believe how tight it was! -If you didn't get a room with a carport, you get a parking pass that allows you to park in many spaces around Capitola. You can park in the blue areas on the attached map. Make sure to look at the signs. Some spots have certain times that you can park in them. I moved our car once so that I didn't have to get up early and move the car by 8 am. Once you park your car there really isn't a need to move it. -If your room is on the first floor, I recommend that instead of squeezing yourself between the cars in the carport to get to the elevator or stairs, simply walk around the building and walk up Cliff Drive a little bit. It's not a very steep incline walking up the street and you only have 4 steps to go up from that side. Once we discovered this, we never rode the elevator again to our room. Of course if there aren't many cars in the carport, this is a moot point. Conclusion This is a cool hotel and despite the issues that we had, I would consider staying again. Hopefully they will fix the heater in room 105 so that it actually turns off. Also, I'd bring my own fan and possibly a portable door alarm if I have to leave the sliding door open. read more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!! I made reservations a month in advance. I requested a room on the 2nd floor due to online reviews stating 1st floor was noisy. Got a call from Bianca a week before reservation wanting to cancel due to emergency construction on 1st floor. I explained my reservation was supposed to be on 2nd floor, which apparently didn't happen. After much back and forth I was promised a room on the 3rd floor (1st lie)and was advised to cancel my reservation through booking.com because they couldn'tdo it on their end (2nd lie). Before canceling, I called back because I wanted a confirmation number first. Spoke to a different person saying I had no reservation and the room I was promised was already given to someone else. I was upset and requested to speak to management, who wasn't available so I requested a call back. I then got a cancelation notice from booking.com. A few days later Bianca called me back and straight out lied through her teeth saying I declined the room on the 3rd floor! I had said I'd prefer a room with a king instead of 2 queens, but we definitely hung up confirming that I would accept that room. Then she had the audacity to say my attitude was unacceptable because i was upset! read more

Bedroom sliding door was missing the screen, but was able to crack the door just enough to hear the sounds of the crashing waves. Location is everything! Perfect spot for surfers. I stayed in Suite 3 which had a giant nice kitchen. The deck is shared with other rooms and not secure if you leave the screen door open because you can't lock it. Which is a problem because he want to have the screen door at night to let the ocean sounds in which are fantastic. This place is very old and quaint and shabby chic. If you have any sound sensitivities do not rent a lower floor. I got stomped out of there from people upstairs. Really the folks who work there are very very nice and the location is everything!!! Warning, people don't seem to care about Covid that much I would say 50% of people are wearing masks in crowded areas. read more

This is the third time we've stayed here. We usually go for the same room, it faces the street. This time was a different room, ocean view. This room had a tiny bathroom too close to the front door. The floor in the bathroom was cracked. The bed is a good size, however it is so big for the room that you can't walk around it comfortably unless you are skinny! I liked that it had 2 sliding glass doors. It was nice to sit on the balcony. The cabinets are hard to get to by the stove. I felt for the cost that they should really fix the place up. I will be back, but for sure I will get a different room. This was suite 5. read more

View and location good - but make sure you get a beach side suite (much pricier) since the others are right on a busy street and don't include on-site parking - not made clear on the website. Also, they lie. My TV didn't work and they said I'd get a $20 refund. I asked for a receipt for the refund, and they told me they couldn't do a receipt - as I expected, no refund. I have to start off by saying that we stay in Capitola all the time. This place used to be the harbor lights motel and recently went through a renovation and upgrade and is now the Capitola beach suites. The location is amazing and the views are wonderful so we were really looking forward to staying here. We finally made a reservation and knowing that the place was just totally remodeled we were super excited!! Well the views are still amazing but I have to say they pretty much put some lipstick on a pig. The sink is falling off the wall in the bathroom. Stains on the carpets. Bathroom is pretty run down and thee certainly was no remodeling done in it. The toilet sets has wear marks. Lights is falling down above the sink in the bathroom. Broken plastic soap dispenser in the bathroom. No counter space or shelf to put an toiletries. Or place in the shower to put a shampoo bottle. A $10 shower caddy would help that! An old tube tv!!! In a newly renovated room?? Seriously!!?? The parking is horrible. The stalls are so narrow under the bldg we can't get out of the car if we park all the way in. They did a great job on the outside of the place and on the common area patio. So it looks way better outside than inside! Way! If the spent HALF the care inside it would be great. We just went to sit on the new couch in the room and the leg is falling off of it!!! Crazy. People spend a lot to stay in capitola. A little extra tlc would have really been nice. Guess we will go back inn and depot hill. Air B and B and capitola hotel. Granted they don't have the view. But we can walk outside and get that. I'd rather not feel like I'm staying at a motel 6 for the same price. :-( Wish I had better news. Sorry. I wanted to love this place. If you only want a view then this IS the place to stay. But beyond that, every other local hotel is way better! They should charge about $150 a night to make people feel like they are not getting ripped off! Also. They say they have wifi. I had to work this trip. The wifi only worked if I sat in one corner of the room. Of course the corner with the broken couch. So have to sit on the floor to work. And the beds totally suck. Soooo uncomfortable. It's actually a motel 6 on the beach so charging Hyatt prices for motel 6 quality. read more

My family member celebrated his birthday and we wanted to get out the busy city so we decided to stay here. The hotel is walking distance to all the store shops and restaurants and the pier. Great view from our hotel terrace!!!!. To the Management Owner's thank you for hiring such an Amazing employee -"Eirc". He truly is a professional, fun and very Goodhearteted person who really took his time to making sure our stay was going to be a Relaxing one!! Great location, stayed in suite 3 and it was very spacious. It is very noisy in the morning with garbage trucks and other workers coming and going. The TV never worked, they came to fix it but once we turned it off it wouldn't come on again. Lots of rules - such as charging you if you get makeup on a washcloth etc. I find it strange that no one is there on the property after 5:30 pm.....so as I stated, couldn't watch TV if we wanted because no one there to fix it. read more

Was given false information about where we could park, ended up getting our car towed, over $500 later and the front desk was completely unwilling to listen to the fact that they were responsible for this. Would not recommend. Stay somewhere with ample parking unless you want to be towed. read more

I loved the stay here last weekend and can't wait to head back. The room we got on the first floor didn't have a beach view but it felt like a little home inside facing the street. It is a bit noisy during the day but at night its pretty quiet. The full kitchen was big and made it convenient to bring food and reheat food when needed but has the works to cook a full meal equipped with pots and pans, knives, oven and stove..everything! The terrace had an amazing view and was empty to my family the whole time so it made up for the street view room we booked. Woke up and went and fished the pier literally steps away the next morning which included a bait n tackle store and restaurant and boat rental on the pier as well. Prime location and would recommend staying here to anyone wanting a little getaway. read more

Very nice location, but the parking is terrible! We didn't go anywhere we couldn't walk. Room 1 faces the road and is so loud! I have no idea what the loud banging or footsteps were, but it lasted all night, all three nights we stayed. The kitchen was a big plus! It has a fridge/freezer, stove/oven and a microwave. The main problem I had with the inside (besides the noise), is the carpets. Room 1 had the dirtiest floor that turned my daughter's feet black, yuck! A simple carpet cleaning could fix that! I had no interaction with anyone that worked there during my stay, so I can't comment on that. Overall, we had a nice time. I'm not sure we will stay there again though. read more

Location was excellent, and that's what you pay for. Extremely noisy, however, right on the main road to town. Room was nice-enough. They could afford to do some paint touch-ups and small fixes. Beautiful ocean view with a long balcony. City Parking permit was included but parking was insufficient. We still had to park up the street. My biggest complain was that our key card got deactivated, and when we came back to our room (with our toddler) they had no one readily-available on-site to help us. Mind-blowing. There was a note hanging at the office saying they were closed for the night, and for room lockouts, to call a cell phone number?! Well, we called and they didn't answer. We texted and they didn't respond. We called a second time, and someone finally picked up, saying she would be there in approximately 15 minutes. So we waited outside of our room, in the cold, with our daughter. This was pretty upsetting. I don't quite understand how there isn't someone at all times at the premises for urgent matters such as this. I'm just thankful this didn't happen to us later in the night, or in more extreme weather. read more

Not a pleasant stay at all. We were in town for a wedding and were given room 1 on the first floor. Not only do people and loud cars continually pass by, but also there was a horrible smell coming out of the bathroom. When I asked what the hotel can do about that the front office girl was not very helpful. She informed us that the smell was coming from the sewage system and there was nothing she could do. She suggested we turn in all the water in the room and let it run for hours?!?! It was just gross and disgusting. For the amount we paid to stay in a dive like this, I would not have minded driving in to our event. Don't waste your money, the great location does not take away from the horrible pestilence that will haunt you forever, unless you enjoy sleeping in a sewer. read more

So, as stated, this place has been updated and USED to the Harbor Lights Motel (check their reviews!) We used to stay here and it was a good deal for what it was, but not anymore. The rates are INSANE for what you get, and just not worth it. It's boutique, spa/resort price without the boutique spa/resort amenities. We have since explored several other options in Capitola and Aptos and you can get better for cheaper elsewhere. It is cute, and the updating was much needed, but the new owners are just a hot mess. Their payment system and reservation system don't talk to one another which caused us some big problems. It's nice and clean and comfortable and you cant beat the location, but the new owners just seem to be trying to cut the most corners they can while charging a ridiculous fee. No thanks. read more

I booked this place for a birthday getaway for my So and myself. I loved the look of it online, and the fact that it was so close to the beach with a view was a selling point. I read the previous 1 star review, and it seems that there has been a lot of upgrading done. The decor was very cute, and all the furniture looked great. We stayed in room 103, so I can't speak for all the rooms, but in ours the bathroom was nice, and the floor plan is completely open so no separate bedroom. The view is spectacular, and being right on the pier is beautiful. The TV was definitely upgraded as well. Oh and the view from the terrace on the second floor is gorgeous. The downsides for us were pretty simple. The bed was extremely uncomfortable, possibly the worst I have slept on in a hotel. Also, if you don't get the top floor, expect to hear EVERYTHING your neighbors do. I am a heavy sleeper, but I woke up to the upstairs neighbor's 4am alarm, and to the next door neighbor's late night conversations. Also, I understand they have the low flow toilets, but no hotel should ever provide single ply toilet paper. read more

Location is GREAT! Comfy bed! Well-stocked. That said, the Noise level was awful. Do not stay here if you want to sleep in! Traffic on one side and trucks coming in loading and unloading on the other side. While the linens and room were clean enough, the carpet and was pretty gross. Tons of stains! The other drawback was the shared balconies. Really limited the privacy, constantly locking the door and shutting curtains. read more

Amaaaaazing place to stay for under $200 (in October)! Looks possibly recently upgraded. We got a king bed, FULL kitchen, very nice bathroom, and the decorations are just adorably beachy! There's slider patio doors off of both the living room and the bedroom the face the ocean! Will come back and do recommend this to anyone staying in the area! Absolutely in love with this town and hotel! This is our second trip to Capitola staying with Capitola Beach Suites and have fallen in love with it all over again! The staff is always extremely friendly and welcoming. Our first trip we stayed in suite 3 on the second floor which was adorable but this time we stayed in suite 7 on the third floor and was blown away (See pictures). 3rd floor is where the terrace is which was so nice for us to sit by the outdoor fireplace at night or sip drinks with a view of Capitola and watch the tides roll in. To the view, beachy decor,cleanliness, and easy access to all of Capitola... safe to say we HIGHLY recommend. Thank you for yet another amazing trip!! read more

Love this place. The rooms where hive and the accommodations where awesome. The only reason I am giving it a 3 star is, because right after we checked out my Amex card was compromised. The only place I had used it was here. False charges on my card. I was head spinning shocked. I told the Claims department that the only place I had used this card was at this facility. We just left our weekend stay at the newly remodeled "Capitola Beach Suites," formerly the Harbor Lights. Our experience was amazing!! We come to Capitola multiple times a year and haven't stayed here in years. The new owners & management have remodeled the rooms, added an AMAZING roof top terrace, & and elevator. My parents who have knee & back problems could no longer stay here years ago with only stair access. We all enjoyed several amazing conversations on the roof terrace while also enjoying the amazing views!! They will also be staying here again from now on! We were here for my sisters wedding this weekend and our room was the one to beat in town!!! Highly recommend staying here as the staff was amazingly helpful with parking situations, accommodating & friendly to not only us but everyone that was with our group. The most relaxing seaside hotel I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. Ocean view and sound from decks facing the water. Recently updated, they are charming and clean with modern beach decor. Kitchens are fully equipped for stay in dining but this little town has so many cute restaurants to try!!! The rooftop deck is a great place just steps from your room to soak up sun while reading your favorite book in perfect temperatures. Check in is easy and staff is very helpful. read more

I stayed in this hotel Sept. 18 and 19th 2020. I walked into my room and the two sliders were wide open as well as the screen doors. Bugs were flying all over the room as well as flies. We were lucky enough to have a parking spot. Our spot had a cement wall on one side and cement post on the other. Had to park at an angle so the driver could get out of the car, maybe two inch clearance on one side. I drive a 2020 Suburu Outback, not really a big vehicle. We never left all weekend after we parked for fear of scratching up my car. Also those same black bugs in our room swarm you in the parking area. I paid well over $300 a night to stay at this place. You have to give this place one star or you can't leave a review. It does not deserve the star I had to give it!!! read more

If you want to actually get some sleep...do NOT stay at this place! There was a thumping noise the entire night. The place is way overpriced for the room and the bathroom and kitchen are so outdated...it's disgusting. The only positive I can give is the view of the ocean. But honestly would have rather slept in a tent on the sand and would have the same view and paid an arm and a leg. This place and the staff were such a let down. read more

The weather was still nice in late October , and I booked this place for a weekend getaway . For being right on the beach , this place was very reasonably priced at least in this " off season ". 2 nights were just under $300, including tax . I am on a budget, so unfortunately I had to choose the cheapest room without a carport or an ocean view . I was a bit stressed by the thought of not being able to find close parking , but I got lucky and grabbed the last open spot . The room was nice and big and had a giant kitchenette . If I had gone to the grocery store I could have made meals here! It's right in very close walking distance to the beach and the wharf and to downtown . I didn't have to move my car all weekend . The downsides are that the office is not open 24 hours . They close at 7 pm . I checked in after hours so I had to make them aware of that and settle the bill the next day . I was a bit disappointed that there was no ice machine on the premises . Ice trays were in the room , but I was going kayaking and trying to fill my cooler with ice for some refreshments, and the ice trays didn't provide enough ice for this . Also , it would be nice if they had a pool / hot tub (they don't ). It's a very small property with just 10 rooms so I guess they don't have everything . I definitely will be back in a year from now pending good weather . I likely can't afford the summer rates . read more

September 2019. I rented two rooms in order to spend quality time with best friends. One room was very nice and one had many issues. The smaller room turned out to be a handicapped room without our knowledge. It did not have a phone in the room and also did not have hot water or water pressure. We were not informed of this beforehand and do not know how you rent a handicapped room without a phone. Scary for elderly folks without staff being available at night. Would love to hear from the owner about this. read more

Fantastic view of Monterey Bay. Our king-size bed was extremely comfortable & we slept fantastic. The room was extremely clean, modern, nicely decorated, and absolutely charming. Full size kitchen! Cook, bake, or stuff the refrigerator with all your favorites. The beach is two flights of stairs beneath you. Or, take the elevator. If you want to be right on the beach, this is it! You've found the right place! Plus, the owners, Hank & Nancy, are frequently on site, making sure your stay is absolutely perfect. The rates are very reasonable. We've stayed here before.
