Structure of the seatings plus movie

This place is great! The food and the sound quality of the movie. Also keeping its old style. The workers were very kind and understanding so that's a plus. Prices are also reasonable. Overall this is a really great place to chill on a weekend or in general.

    Happy birthday!

What an awesome theater for a birthday party! We held an 8th birthday party for my niece at the Capitol Theatre. It's a wonderful and fun idea for late afternoon birthday festivities. The theater supplies unlimited popcorn and an ice cream sundae bar for all the kids as well as a few decorations in the theater. You simply need to bring your own DVD movie of choice and any beverages, cake, etc. We had the theater from 3-6 pm. There is a sound system that you can hook up with your iPod/iphone. My niece had made her own playlist and we had the music playing while her guests arrived. There were some nice lighting effects in the theater and the kids actually started dancing - a little night club for kids! Our movie, Sing, started at 3:30. The staff handed out little bags of popcorn to all the kids. The ice cream sundae bar followed in the front of the theater. The staff was really great with setting up the room beforehand, providing kids with popcorn and setting up the ice cream sundae area. The Capitol Theatre is a great venue for a kids birthday party.

My friend and I went to see the matinee showing of An American Tail: Fievel Goes West on an original 35mm borrowed by RISD (which I thought was pretty cool). Forgive the blasphemy but the theater does give off high school auditorium vibes: I wish there was a bit more of an incline for the seats further back and the seats themselves are not super comfortable. There is a balcony, however, that I might check out next time. Convenient location with lots of great restaurants around for a pre-/post-show meal or drink. Parking is tricky but only if you're coming from the direction of JFK Street (avoid if possible). Use Mt Auburn Street instead - more parking options and a lot less traffic. 2-hr meter options only and the ticketing is aggressive. If you're here for a movie and a show, definitely recommend moving your car at some point to avoid a ticket.

But if by some off chance you haven't gone yet, do yourself a favor and check out their schedule. You will not be disappointed. Growing up and spending time in the Boston area when I was younger, the HFA was one of my most prized past times. With plenty of time on my hands and wallet conscious as I was, I frequently attended their great selection of independent and foreign cinema. Now that I'm temporarily located in the area again, I've made a point to periodically check their schedules to see what's on the agenda. I've already had the chance to see an Agnes Varda screening with in-person speaking by the most amazing filmmaker herself (my second time seeing her at the HFA) and "The Champion", a brilliant mid-century Japanese film. The price is still right at the HFA, a mere $9 for most screenings. The only downside is that it's cash only and you can't buy tickets in advance. I basically never have cash on me, and am a planner that enjoys the convenience of buying ahead, but it's worth the slight inconvenience to attend their films.

A few weeks ago, I caught the silent version of Hirchcock's "Blackmail." A director of the Archive said a few very witty words about the Hitchcock film series. I loved that personal touch. The most amazing part was not the film, but the live pianist, Martin Marks, who provided the score for 70+ minutes. Like I said, it's all about the experience, & the theater makes it a special night out. No eating in the theater/no concession. I didn't have to pay admission, just had to flash my handy dandy school ID (that puppy has saves me countless dollars.)

On this particular trip, I ordered the large popcorn and I was going to get my refill after the movie was over. Unfortunately, when my movie ended, it was 11 o'clock and the concession stand was closed and they've already disposed of all the popcorn. I was lucky enough to get a nice supervisor David Diaz who guaranteed me a popcorn on my next trip there since there was none available, which was my request with one of the workers who introduced me to him. Kudos to David and the rest of the staff who was extremely polite and well-made and handled my dilemma in real time. My only negative on this particular trip where the seats which I was unaware, but they are not the big power recliners like in Woburn and South Bay. Nevertheless, they were very comfortable and they were big and cushioned well. The stater was extremely clean except for the men's bathroom before the movie. There were paper towels in and trash all over the floor and a couple hours later after the movie it was the same I was extremely surprised. I would definitely recommend this movie theater as it has.
