My favorite theater in Somerville! I love that they show indie films and have festival with different themes. It is also one of the few theaters in the area where it shows 70mm films. I enjoyed watching Oppenheimer and Dunkirk here, as well as Dune Part II which was awesome! They also have a great option for concession bar, and snacks, etc. I should not forget to mention that it has a great vibe of old theater - I have been coming here for probably a decade or so and am always amazed how beautiful this theater is! Love the ambient and service is exceptional as well. The price is also very reasonable and the theater is continently located right next to red line Davis T stop! Come here and enjoy the shows!

Had a great theater experience in theater 3 to see a movie. Everyone is very friendly and the place has an old school feel. The concessions are reasonable priced for a movie theater and you can get a large popcorn and soft drink with refills for like under 10$. We were there for a matinee and it was like $8 so it was an affordable outing. The seats were comfortable and had plenty of legroom. The theater did get a little steamy during the movie but it was sold out so I get it.

Pros: Old timey theater. Love the decor. Cheap cheap ticket prices. Cons: I didn't mind the smaller screen or older seats. No attached parking lot and no street parking. For good or bad, the employees here are very unique characters. Especially the grumpy, but informative person tearing tickets.

My friend and I went to see the matinee showing of An American Tail: Fievel Goes West on an original 35mm borrowed by RISD (which I thought was pretty cool). Forgive the blasphemy but the theater does give off high school auditorium vibes: I wish there was a bit more of an incline for the seats further back and the seats themselves are not super comfortable. There is a balcony, however, that I might check out next time. Convenient location with lots of great restaurants around for a pre-/post-show meal or drink. Parking is tricky but only if you're coming from the direction of JFK Street (avoid if possible). Use Mt Auburn Street instead - more parking options and a lot less traffic. 2-hr meter options only and the ticketing is aggressive. If you're here for a movie and a show, definitely recommend moving your car at some point to avoid a ticket.

But if by some off chance you haven't gone yet, do yourself a favor and check out their schedule. You will not be disappointed. Growing up and spending time in the Boston area when I was younger, the HFA was one of my most prized past times. With plenty of time on my hands and wallet conscious as I was, I frequently attended their great selection of independent and foreign cinema. Now that I'm temporarily located in the area again, I've made a point to periodically check their schedules to see what's on the agenda. I've already had the chance to see an Agnes Varda screening with in-person speaking by the most amazing filmmaker herself (my second time seeing her at the HFA) and "The Champion", a brilliant mid-century Japanese film. The price is still right at the HFA, a mere $9 for most screenings. The only downside is that it's cash only and you can't buy tickets in advance. I basically never have cash on me, and am a planner that enjoys the convenience of buying ahead, but it's worth the slight inconvenience to attend their films.

A few weeks ago, I caught the silent version of Hirchcock's "Blackmail." A director of the Archive said a few very witty words about the Hitchcock film series. I loved that personal touch. The most amazing part was not the film, but the live pianist, Martin Marks, who provided the score for 70+ minutes. Like I said, it's all about the experience, & the theater makes it a special night out. No eating in the theater/no concession. I didn't have to pay admission, just had to flash my handy dandy school ID (that puppy has saves me countless dollars.)

On this particular trip, I ordered the large popcorn and I was going to get my refill after the movie was over. Unfortunately, when my movie ended, it was 11 o'clock and the concession stand was closed and they've already disposed of all the popcorn. I was lucky enough to get a nice supervisor David Diaz who guaranteed me a popcorn on my next trip there since there was none available, which was my request with one of the workers who introduced me to him. Kudos to David and the rest of the staff who was extremely polite and well-made and handled my dilemma in real time. Nevertheless, they were very comfortable and they were big and cushioned well. The stater was extremely clean except for the men's bathroom before the movie.
