Third row view, theater 2, fine seating.
    Boston D.

First time trying this theater. Closest to where we live. First the positives: comfortable recliners, decent screen/audio, good inside-movie experience. Parking is easy. Everything around the theater seems off. Immediately, you walk in and feel the floor sticky everywhere. Nobody has cleaned them for a while. Self serve concessions are messy, pop corn/butter scattered everywhere. Bathroom is small upstairs, not very clean, and stall ran out of toilet paper. The entire facility looks and feels very uncared for and out of repair. Staff neither friendly nor engaged. Has a running out of the clock feel to the business. Not sure if we'd return.

Kind, attentive staff and a very clean, well-kept cinema. A great place to enjoy a movie.

Theater was FREEZING, and volume was far too low. Also movie was terribly sad, maybe something happier next time. Nice seats though

Do the seats in all the theaters recline fully? I went to one movie but only the seat back went down, the legs didn't go up. What did I do wrong!?

You did nothing wrong! They have two different types of recliners in their theaters. You just got unlucky and got one of the theaters where just the back reclines.

My friend and I went to see the matinee showing of An American Tail: Fievel Goes West on an original 35mm borrowed by RISD (which I thought was pretty cool). Forgive the blasphemy but the theater does give off high school auditorium vibes: I wish there was a bit more of an incline for the seats further back and the seats themselves are not super comfortable. There is a balcony, however, that I might check out next time. Convenient location with lots of great restaurants around for a pre-/post-show meal or drink. Parking is tricky but only if you're coming from the direction of JFK Street (avoid if possible). Use Mt Auburn Street instead - more parking options and a lot less traffic. 2-hr meter options only and the ticketing is aggressive. If you're here for a movie and a show, definitely recommend moving your car at some point to avoid a ticket.

But if by some off chance you haven't gone yet, do yourself a favor and check out their schedule. You will not be disappointed. Growing up and spending time in the Boston area when I was younger, the HFA was one of my most prized past times. With plenty of time on my hands and wallet conscious as I was, I frequently attended their great selection of independent and foreign cinema. Now that I'm temporarily located in the area again, I've made a point to periodically check their schedules to see what's on the agenda. I've already had the chance to see an Agnes Varda screening with in-person speaking by the most amazing filmmaker herself (my second time seeing her at the HFA) and "The Champion", a brilliant mid-century Japanese film. The price is still right at the HFA, a mere $9 for most screenings. The only downside is that it's cash only and you can't buy tickets in advance. I basically never have cash on me, and am a planner that enjoys the convenience of buying ahead, but it's worth the slight inconvenience to attend their films.

A few weeks ago, I caught the silent version of Hirchcock's "Blackmail." A director of the Archive said a few very witty words about the Hitchcock film series. I loved that personal touch. The most amazing part was not the film, but the live pianist, Martin Marks, who provided the score for 70+ minutes. Like I said, it's all about the experience, & the theater makes it a special night out. No eating in the theater/no concession. I didn't have to pay admission, just had to flash my handy dandy school ID (that puppy has saves me countless dollars.)

Imagine paying almost $20 just to sit upright the whole movie AWFUL! It was a busy rainy night, so the theater felt crowded and a little uncomfortable overall. Between everyone coming in wet from the rain and the amount of people there, it definitely wasn't the most relaxing movie experience. One thing I did think was interesting was that the popcorn is already laid out so you can walk up and grab the one you want, but unfortunately the popcorn itself was stale and just not good at all. Pretty gross and $37 later (with the drink). The escalators also weren't working, so we had to walk all the way up. I didn't mind too much because hey, extra steps for the day, but what really stood out to me was that the elevator was also out. If someone needed accessibility accommodations, that would've been a serious issue. I did like that the parking garage is directly connected to the theater which made getting in and out convenient, but overall this isn't a theater I'd rush back to.
