After spending a large amount of money on a brand new radiator, I returned for a simple alignment after purchasing new tires. Over 2 hours later (while they knew we had our dogs because one was still in a surgery cone & we live in Tahoe) I was told they could not proceed with the alignment due to a water hose issue. Suddenly a several hundred dollar routine maintenance check in , turned in to thousands. I was told I was safe to drive my jeep until we could come back to Carson. I must say I will retract my previous review and give them 5 stars! I wish I had just stayed with Capitol Automotive in the first place. After 2 replaced transmissions from a bad shop in Minden, I had come to Capitol Automotive again for help. My check engine light came on, and I brought my van in after my dear friend told me how great they took care of her. They checked my engine codes, and sadly, I needed another transmission since the last place didn't, in reality, fix it. So Capitol Automotive not only fixed my transmission, but they did it in just 10 days!! The last place had my vehicle for months and at one point for a year and a half off and on! Then my van started leaking oil again. I brought it back to Capitol, and they fixed it and didn't charge me for it because it was from the transmission repair. They also fixed my AC unit for me and charged way less than what other places would have charged me. Not only is my vehicle running great, but I feel comfortable and relieved. I have somewhere to go that will fix things right the first time! I had high hopes for these people, and all was well until their main guy left a few years ago. Then suddenly, they told me I needed all this work done on my brakes, and I mean EXPENSIVE! So, I immediately took it to a very busy reputable shop that could not get me in at the moment I needed help. Sure enough, my brakes were just fine, as were the rotors and everything else! 4 yrs later, and I'm still using the same brakes and they are still good!!! I just ran into a guy who these guys tried to rip off, and this guy wasn't going to let them get away with it so he took them to court and won a judgement. Capitol Automotive's customer service is severely lacking. The woman answering the phone hung up on me when I asked her how/why they don't offer a guarantee for their work. This place is completely overpriced and gauge their clientele. They lack integrity on every level. They charged me twice for a wheel alignment within a 5-day period all because they had to order a part and they didn't guarantee their first wheel alignment. By the way, the mechanic I am using now noticed they put the part in wrong. Wow! Attitude is everything and she hung up on me!! Trust me, go somewhere else for your automotive needs!!!!!! read more

Let me start with my truck has some upgrades. So i was on 50 east and heard a loud swooshing noise and my truck went into limp mode. So from carson to dayton i drove at 12 mph. Anyways had truck towed to these guys thinking just a alternater and a battery i always do both. Well when they removed have of the drivers side of engine they found oil. Well crap i needed new valve covers. Ok no were not done yet.so my bill went from 1500 to 2500. Damn fords ecoboost. Well when removing air intake the last shop broke a sensor and how its fastened to tube. There goes another 210.00. So anyways those boys worked there asses off on my truck for 5 days. Truck kept blowing seals in the valve cover under slight boost. Like 3 to 4 psi. So after a whole day on it i said im going to bypass the black oil seperater. Bingo ding ding ding.no more back pressure. Well after all this and days on a truck that just needed a alt and batt. I think the mechanic was going to a syc.lol. these giys are awesome they stuck to it when they should have quit. Well theres lunch coming its the best i can do. I took my daughter's older car in with an electrical problem. The staff was very friendly. Of course the car would not exhibit the problem I brought it in for. They hung in there and finally found the problem after several days of detective work. Marcus called me regularly with updates. Every time he called he always asked if I had time to talk. I appreciate that bit of courtesy. Once they diagnosed problem it was fixed in 24 hours. When I went to pick it up Bob who originally took the car in was friendly despite being very busy! The service is always quick, unless I've planned to leave my car there for additional maintenance. I brought a car in for an oil change and they did a full safety inspection on it and found a few things that needed to be fixed that my old shop missed. These guys have earned all the five star ranking they have recieved. I would be one of them, but my last recent experience has left a very bitter taste in my mouth. First and foremost I want to say that they do top notch work. After having only positive experiences in the past, they have gained my trust. Because they impressed me so much I have even referred friends and family to them. (Who are also very satisfied with their work) I recently brought in my car to have some maintenance work done. (Timing belt kit and brakes were the big ones) and I had asked for them to remove and replace a passenger side mirror as well as a fuel cap door). My issue is not with the work itself, but the labor cost. I felt that they were egregious with it. For instance...with the timing belt, they wanted to remove and replace the water pump as part of the package. I had to pay labor for both the timing belt and water pump. As if it were two separate jobs. ( they explained it the timing belt doesn't run off the water pump). Even though the water pump is easily accessible when working on the timing belt, they charged me an additional 2+ hours of labor. With only previous positive experiences, they gained my trust so I really didn't question anything.. and that's where I went wrong. I should have done my homework before hand on what I was looking at labor wise. after talking with people that have the same car as myself (and have had the same work done), calling other shops, and even other dealerships, I realized that I do have a valid point. For the most part, I feel that I was double charged around 2-3 hours of labor. *everyone that I have spoken to or showed my invoice to has agreed that I was overcharged on the labor.* To have everything done it was around a $2,400 job. About $1,500 was labor. Also, I was quoted for upcoming work for about $2,000- $2,500. I have also referred family members there who brought them larger jobs. I felt as if they wouldn't work with the price, even a little bit. Just kinda shrugged their shoulder and said "well this is how we did it and this is what we are charging". Definitely off putting. I will definitely do my homework and explore other shop options before I bring my car back. read more

Had my 4Runner in 4 times. First time in 2015, to fix a 4WD engagement issue, they did a great job and a fair price. Returned the next year to have them diagnose and repair an AC problem. I'd been recharging it due to a small leak that would cause the HVAC cooling to blow warm air after about 3-4 weeks. They did not find a leak and said all was ok. But I had to pay for dumping the (R-22) freon, recharging, and a diagnosis. I felt that was fair enough, to pay for the freon and diagnosis, but was in doubt about the conclusion. The cooling worked fine then. Hmmm. It was late in the summer at that point, so I didn't need the HVAC any longer. At onset of warm temps the following summer, the HVAC blew only warm air again and I returned the 4Runner to them as a result. They said they still did not find a leak, and I had to pay for cost of diagnosis and to dump and recharge the (R-22) freon again. Another Hmmm. The HVAC worked ok again for a while. But, after a while, the HVAC system started blowing warm air again. I charged the the system with R-22 from Walmart, as needed, once again, until I thought I needed to get it FIXED. I returned the 4Runnder once again, and a cursory look, by the then tech, revealed there was a small leak (amen) at a hardline running into the front HVAC cooling radiator , which is in front of the engine cooling radiator. He said they would have to order the part and when it came in , replace it. Cost would be part, labor and dumping and replacing the R-22. I appealed to their warranty, since this was my 3rd visit for same problem. They would not compromise, even on the cost of the R-22, and even when I requested that they allow me to pay their cost (their wholesale price vs customer price), the rep said , sorry. ....NO deal. So, I left, telling them they were now on my shitlist, and will no longer use or recommend them read more

The starter on my 2005 Toyota Tacoma died, and I was sad! After the AAA driver beat my starter with a large wrench and got my truck started, I drove to Capitol Automotive, which I had heard good things about. I met Chris and Marcus, who quickly gave me a good quote and had me in their truck back home within fifteen minutes from the time I arrived! A couple of things I noticed, as a woman: 1. The guys were nice and respectful and did not treat me like I am an idiot. 2. The shop was super clean! I was not afraid to touch the counter or sit on their chairs. 3. The work was done quickly and Marcus kept me in the loop. This was a great experience - which I was not expecting to have! Instead of going to Toyota for some work they had quoted me, I think I will be going to Capitol Automotive! read more

We were on our annual pilgrimage to Burning Man, in our new RV and out of no where, lost a fan belt on the 395, doing 70 mph, on a wed. at 4pm in 90 degree heat. CAPITOL AUTOMOTIVE was the 4th shop we called and the only shop to answer the phone that late in the day. long story short! the owner MARCUS was able to isolate the problem on the phone, had the belt in stock, and was able to send his lead mechanic out, avoid towing, took our credit card, and got us backon the road quickly. moral to the story: check your belts before you burn the man! read more

Frendly service and affordable. I had my ac evacuated and recharged. It now works like it should. They take pictures of everything they work on. The reason for 4 stars is because my truck was left unlocked on the side street after the repairs were made. My kids $300 recaro car seat could have been stolen. They also changed out and charged me for a marker bulb without my approval. It was $4 so not a big deal. They also pointed out a few other problems which i appreciate. Update: This is the reason for 2 stars...i wasted 2 hours on a Saturday when i could have been out wheeling....dont waste peoples time or try to pull a fast one...one of the problems they listed was that the wheel bearings needed to replaced and that it would cost xxx amount and if i did not replace them very soon my wheel would fall off. Now I'm not a mechanic by trade but i have built rock crawlers and repaired our jeeps. With that being said i dug into the bearings on both sides and saw nothing wrong. I regressed and reinstalled everything the way it should be. I wanted to like this shop but because you charged me for a bulb that may or may not have worked, left my truck unlocked on your side street and told me my wheel bearings were so bad my wheel was gonna fall off. I will probably not return to your shop. Luckily i didn't waste any more time writing this review since i did it while doing my morning business.... read more

I took my 2001 Chevy Tahoe into Capital for repairs this year . The ABS was inop. , leaking intake gaskets , ball joints , tie rods . My ABS is still Inop. And to top it off , I'm 12-15 miles from highway 95 back into the mountains near Mason Valley Wildlife Refuge and driving towards 95 . My steering wheel suddenly cranks to the right , truck is going straight and all of a sudden I lose control , it stopped on a dirt berm . When I got up underneath I see the l/s tie rod hanging down . I get my wrenches , and even the tie rod lock nut on the right is loose as well . I got it back in and drove it another 30 miles or so home . I call them about it and they could not have cared less . They reset it and stuck it out on the street , no explanation , nothing . I almost had to drag info . out of the Technician . They do NOT like come-backs (No Techs. do) , and if called on the safety and quality of their work , they like it less . I see all of these glowing reviews , even my wife's vehicle was done excellent . My Dad even took his truck there in the 60's and 70's . So I figured why not ,,, read again ! If I had been on the road and driving 55-65 as it's posted , it could have killed someone or a family ! Again , their attitude STUNK . I'd take my truck to Wal Mart before ever darkening their door again . Things happen , yes ,, but it was handled in such a "How Dare You" attitude . Be very care full and do your research , or make sure your seat belts are tight afterwards . read more
