To whom it may concern:
I am writing this letter to voice my concerns and disappointments, regarding the health, safety, service, and lack of quality living conditions overall at my residence of 389 Cooper St in Ottawa, Ontario. I have lived at this address from Nov 1, 2013 to the present day of this documents origin Feb 10, 2014. This, my pick of poison as to whom I am renting off of is, the property management company called, 'CAPITAL RENTALS,' of which is owned and operated by some members of the family name, 'Mikhael.'
When I moved in, I would soon learn without warning or notification about the potent infestation of 'Bedbugs and Cockroaches' within my room/apartment, and as well throughout the buildings common areas, such as the stairways and hallways. I brought this disheartening issue up with my landlord, and he had someone spray a pesticide but only the one time when I had just moved in, likely in hopes to silence my outspoken frustrations. I spent every night up late, when Bed Bugs would come out of cracks and crevices, and I began killing them approximately by the dozens every night for the first month. Even after the day of being sprayed the problem continued to swell. After the treatment was used, I never seen one dead Bed Bug that would have died as a result of the one application used by the chosen company, which may or may not have been a creditable source to begin with. This indicates to me that the only bugs being killed were by me staying up all night and killing them manually. I was informed that the chemical spray the exterminator used would only be good for about 30 days it has now been about 90 days since the last application. With that being said, there is still an unacceptable amount of bugs coming into my space, also seen in the hallways, and other general shared areas.
After talking to some of the other neighbouring tenants, it has come to my attention that this has been an ongoing misery in other tenants living spaces for months and in some cases, years. All rooms/apartments must be sprayed monthly by a 'credible, professional, pesticide company,' and with regular cleanings accompanied by maintenance work done to repair all breaches in the walls where bugs randomly hide. One room, apartment or common area being treated at a time sporadically will not work in most cases or this in particular situation, as many apartment doors have about a 1 to 2 inch gab above the flooring surface, where even a rat could easily come and go from apartment to apartment, never mind an infestation of bedbugs and cockroaches.
Besides the obvious invasion of bugs, there are also dangerously broken stairs, heat outages in most tenants apartments, no working shower for weeks at a time, broken tiles, and cut out holes and large wall cracks, lastly, an extremely fragile flooring and ceiling structure. I have made numerous efforts verbally or orally to all above and below mentioned issues.
Adding to this manifestation, Cockroaches have now become just as much of a bold problem as the bed bugs were and still are. Every day inside my place or outside for that matter, over the last 90 days at least one living cockroach has been spotted and killed by just myself alone. Some of the other tenants I have spoken with have claimed to have wanted their apartments and the building completely sprayed by the pest control specialist, but the management company has downplayed the situation as false, with no accountability or responsibility taken to properly start and complete the process to eliminate all infestations throughout the apartment building, the beat goes on.
Having these matters being allowed to take place, and they 'are allowed' to take place, can be extremely embarrassing, wearing, stressful, unsanitary, leading to flesh bites, nightmares and unsettling sleeps for many people, followed by a loss of wages, and definitely a of belongings..Finally, it can affect you psychologically, mentally, and emotionally, even playing a role in something as elementary, as not wanting to have a guest come over, for fear of them seeing or leaving with this bad luggage. The stigma related to bedbug and cockroach infestation can impact your social life immensely, making you lie and muster up preposterous excuses, to detour company and visitors from entering your space. The building is not up to standards and not even likely up to code structurally, and this needs to be seen as the bottom line by the Government, Landlords, Tribunal, the City of Ottawa and other Municipalities alike.
