I requested service from this company, and over the phone, I was quoted $55. However, the total price ended up being $205 because I was later informed that there was an additional service fee. Although the job was completed, my door no longer shuts properly because the technician bent it while opening it. A locksmith, named Mark or Mike, driving a black Benze SUV was sent to my apartment to fix a lock at the entrance door Iin Herndon Reston area. His bill came out was twice of what he originally quoted. A few examples of the extras as I can remembered since he did not leave the itemized receip he wrotet: the trip visit fee, a common key for two locks, tax for the parts, 5% for paying with credit card, but he does not accept check.none was disclosed upfront. I had to get lock for old iron door. I called the store and informed them of the lock I needed. They asked me to send them a picture which I did and they provided me the information and help I needed via email. These guys were able to rekey the lock within minutes and saved me a ton of money. Everyone were so friendly and pleasant. I highly recommend this business. read more

I called and advised I needed my condo post office box lock replaced. I asked twice how much it would cost. The guy was evasive and said he needed to look at the lock Before he could say. He shows up the next day in a Mercedes SUV quickly removes the lock (it took about 2 seconds), and then proceeds to tell me that the charges are $79 service fee for showing up, and $159 to replace the lock!!!! I said if you had told me that when I asked you yesterday how much it would cost, I wouldn't have hired you. He had already removed my lock, so I was stuck. It took him all of five minutes to replace the lock. And wanted to charge me $ $238!!!! The post office charges $30. He knew I was very angry and ended up charging $129. Which is still 4 times what the post office charges! No wonder he drives a Mercedes. Do not schedule him to come out unless he gives you the price up front. read more

I had an appointment with the DMV, and my safe where I keep important documents would not open for me. I did a quick search and saw this business had several five star ratings (obviously not on Yelp) so I called them. They were responsive but I had to ask twice about pricing. It was $79 service call and additional cost starting at $119. Usually if a company does the service, the service call cost is part of the final bill. The locksmith was nice and it took him TEN minutes to open the safe. At the end, he charged $300!!! He told me their pricing for ANY safe starts at $300. It would have been nice if you told me that cost up front. This is very deceptive business practice, but it explained why he was driving a Mercedes SUV to the service call. Prior to agreeing to perform the rekeying service the locksmith requested that I text him a picture of my existing key so he could determine if rekeying the lock was possible. The locksmith determined that rekeying my lock could be done. I was able to quickly make an appointment for the service. The locksmith arrived on time and quickly rekeyed the lock. When you first walk in to Capitol Locksmith it doesn't appear as though you are going to find what you want. There is a tiny area for customers, just 4 short and narrow aisles. But, they have tons of stuff packed into this place behind the counter. Just ask for what you need and they probably have it. 220 volt wall plug, got it. Paint thinner, got it. The guys in here are all knowledgeable and friendly. It really is a throw back to how hardware stores used to be before Home Depot put most places out of business. It's not quite Fragger's but, it can be a blessing when you've already started a project and desperately need a missing piece to finish the job. read more

For those people who complained about the service, you must not be from this area, or haven't lived in the area very long. If you want somebody who will "service" you, go to Home Depot. They already have kneepads on. Capital Locksmith has gotten me out of numerous jams. It's a neighborhood hardware store. It doesn't claim to be anything more than that. If they have what you need, awesome. They'll find it from their rows of storage and crap for you. If they don't have it, they'll tell you where you can get it. The prices are cheap, the place is locally owned, and if you need help with a project at home, they'll come by and help you out of a bind. Were you expecting a cappuccino with your screws? This is only a review of the services, not the retail. Before yesterday, we had a 5-key entry system: storm door, front door, back door, back security door, back gate. It was a nightmare. And on top of it all, each door required a key in and a key out (read: on my than one occasion, I found myself locked inside the house--not so good in an emergency, right?). Enter Capital Locksmith. An hour and $350 later, we had one key and switch bolts in every door. Ah, now I can rest easy! The missing star is for a late arrival and no notice. Super impressed with Capital Locksmith's service. I called to have a condo mailbox key fixed and the owner (I'm assuming) answered the call and was incredibly friendly. He said they were pretty busy that day but would try and get someone out either same day or the next day. I've called about 5 other local locksmiths and they were all booked until next week. This is actually a hardware store that provides locksmith and security services. The place has saved my day many times. I need something while I'm in the middle of doing a job. First thing that comes to my mind is Home Depot Oh My God. Then I remember the hardware store just south of the Petworth Metro Station at the intersection of Georgia and New Hampshire Avenue, NW. And I wonder: "Is it open?" They don't keep predictable hours so far as I can tell but almost always when I've needed them to be open they are. You go inside and it is dark with rows of shelves and shelves with little parts and widgets and all those things you need and good buys on things you never knew you needed. Like this morning, a simple request: "I need some very small screws with anchors." The fellow immediately went to a place amidst thousands of little parts and held it out to me and said, "Like this?". It was exactly what I needed. I was able to do in 10 minutes what would have taken more than an hour by being able to get what I needed within five blocks of where I live. Otherwise it would have been Pfieffers in Mt. Pleasant or Oh God Please No Home Depot. And what I've neglected to say is how nice these people are. The owner's daughter is playing in the store when I go in. I like that. The owner himself is friendly as he can be. For example, the first time I went there after we'd lived in the neighborhood about a month he asked, "Are you new to the neighborhood?" and then began to tell me about businesses in the area, services his shop provides, etc. A reaffirmation for me that one of the best qualities of DC is that it is actually a collection of neighborhoods that comprise a city. So if you live anywhere near the Petworth Metro, need some hardware, go to this place, enjoy the conversation, get what you need and feel good about shopping locally rather than paying the Ubiquitous Hardware Beast. read more

For other hardware, the store is a bit dark and small, but for that random thing, it very well might be packed into a corner, particularly items unique to the older houses in the area (like old keyhole locks ready to cut?!). read more

I had lost a key to an ignition, and when I brought it in to see if they could create a new one, they were very friendly and helpful. I didn't give them a lot to work with, and couldn't provide the key codes they needed, but the owner spent a lot of time trying to help me out. I have been to this hardware store only four or five times, but that's over a period of ten years, which gives me a long term view of the quality of their service. It's everything you could ask for in a small neighborhood store. The owner and his helper are knowledgeable, know their inventory, are polite and helpful. I have never been disappointed. If they don't have what I need, they tell me how I can obtain the item. I've always gone to have work done on my Baldwin deadbolts, a lengthy process, so I've had many opportunities to watch interactions with other customers -- always flawless I've read the negative reviews and I find them difficult to believe given my experience over the years. I called this service on a Sunday to have a lock changed on a security door in my house as I had been robbed the night before. They charged $700, outrageous, so I was robbed twice in 24 hours. They always seem to figure out an answer to my question(s) and have been very helpful in explaining how to use the materials I purchase. Robert gave me great advice regarding anchors I was looking for when bolting my bookcases to the wall and Jack recently came up with some inventive way of bolting my milk crate to the back of my bicycle. Update: Not only was I overcharged, the lock was put on backwards, so my mailbox had never properly been secured. I called Capitol Locksmith to report this and ask that someone be sent out to replace the lock. The man who answered the phone, whom I suspect is the owner, asked why it had taken me a month to report it. I countered with questions of my own: what the timing had to do with his locksmith not properly replacing the lock; did he intend for the lock to only last one month? He hung up on me. I called back. He stopped answering the phone and did not return my calls. So I left a message letting him know that I had 1. the receipt for the lock change service; 2. the check I wrote his locksmith; and 3. my banking statement showing the time and date that his locksmith cashed the check. I informed him that I would file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, update my review on Yelp about this new burst of rudeness and incompetence, and take legal action in small claims court if necessary. Low and behold, I receive the sweetest message from someone in the office. It really shouldn't take all of that to get decent service, especially after I've been grossly overcharged. The icing on the cake: a couple of days later, the lock just completely fell off the mailbox door because it wasnt fully screwed on in the first place. AWESOME. Since I clearly didn't trust Capitol Locksmith to do anything akin to a competent job, I asked my building's maintenance man to put the lock back on for me. He was kind enough to oblige.
