The appliances are the same as anywhere else, but BUYER BEWARE when it comes to the hidden costs! If you buy a gas appliance, they will NOT install it for you. We paid nearly $400 in extra fees because the installer had to come twice - because Capital Iron couldn't give us a precise time for him to be there, even though I requested, twice, that they look after coordinating it. Purchased an accessory online in May 2024 for a very expensive BBQ I had bought locally from Capital Iron/West Coast Appliance (same owner). Card was charged, email receipt received. A month elapsed, no delivery, so I followed up with Doug, the owner or manager. Another follow up and a promise or two later, still no delivery. By then it was late July. I informed Doug that unless I received the item within a further week, I would seek a chargeback to my credit card. No reply so I disputed the charge and got the credit back on my card. Now fast forward another 6-8 weeks (late September) and Doug emails me and flat-out accuses me of lying to the card company because (as he claims) I've had the item in my possession since early June. Completely ignoring all the multiple attempts that I made to actually receive the item. I responded, providing him with copies of all my previous emails, including his promises to deliver. He did not choose to respond in any way, let alone apologize. Capital Iron apparently used to be a well-respected name in Victoria. It closed and was reopened by Doug and his team recently. Given this mismanagement and negligent, hostile customer service, I cannot see a bright future for the new incarnation of the store. read more

I have a really hard time trying to think of a way to compare this place to something similar in my hometown of San Diego. This store has a lot of different things! I probably spent 2 hours browsing the store. There are kitchen gadgets, serving ware, garden items, cold weather clothes, and so much more. I had a hard time leaving this place because I ran out of time to explore all of it. Thankfully, while I was there, I found the shoe sale area and bought three beautiful pairs of shoes! Timberland leather boots, Sorel snow boots, and a casual pair of low boots from Minnetonka. I got a great deal on these shoes and since the Canada/US exchange rate was in my favor, I got an additional (25% off) discount! I just moved to Victoria in 2016, so I never got to see Capital Iron in it's heyday. But as a utilitarian type person, this store still seems amazing to me. Reminds me of Army and Navy in Vancouver, but without all the crackheads hanging around. I love how they have camping, fishing, hardware, kitchen stuff, and clothing. They carry some nice stuff from Woolrich and Pendleton, although not the blankets unfortunately. If anyone from Capital Iron reads this, please start stocking high quality wool blankets. I can't find them anywhere in Victoria, and I guarantee with people returning to more traditional technologies (hipsters, or even just practical folks), you could make a killing. read more

Maybe I'm missing something, but I just didn't get what other Yelpers loved so much about this store. OK, yeah, the pink pig-shaped grill outside the front door gave me high hopes, but nothing inside really lived up to that. The ground-floor level is mostly home and kitchen stuff, with lots of cooking/baking supplies and kitchen gadgets. The lower level is the garden-supply department, and the upstairs has camping/sports equipment and apparel. I didn't see any especially good deals browsing through the home stuff and wasn't interested in the rest. The space is pretty interesting and it's, uh, definitely got a lot of stuff, but if you have limited time in Victoria, I wouldn't waste your time walking out here from downtown unless you have an urgent need for sleeping bags and cookie sheets. read more

Capital Iron is the defining experience of a leisurely shop... There are floors and floors (OK only 3 but feels like many) of every damned thing you could want... and a whole lot you didn't even know you needed! In one place... outdoor wear, tools, weather vanes, tents, portholes from an old ship, plants, garden gnomes, fabric, lawn statuary and best of all table linens... While we are on the topic, I have a shoe thing, and it is only matched by my pictures thing and my table linens thing. Capital Iron allows me to absolutely relish my table cloth and napkin ring habit. The ONLY reason that this review is one star short of a royal flush is because in recent visits I have been unable to find that perfect $12 table cloth any more, their linen area has been subject to gentrification. The basement however continues to be rummage worthy and interesting... because after all, who doesn't have the perfect spot for a ships steering wheel? read more

Hey do you need something while on vacation? Like hardware store, or kitchen goods, or a new coat and warm hat? This hodge-podge store is 3 stories tall and right on the waterfront. The basement has a Christmas store. It's that kind of goofy mashup store that excels in tourist towns. They have a dedicated parking lot. Lots of things that would make your vacation place nicer. Maybe there are better options in Victoria, but for carless vacationers who aren't bargain hunting? Swing on by. It's decent and we didn't see a lot of general stores. read more

He was shocked when I explained to him about his behaviour. And very apologetic. He worked hard to upgrade our order -- better, available BBQ for the same price. His efforts were much appreciated. Capital Iron has been one of my favorite places since I was nine or ten years old. Back then it was pretty much all war surplus stuff - HUGE bins of it. But it has evolved over time so that it is now the best hardware store in town. It makes no pretense of being a top-end store nor, thankfully, a big-box store nor a sell-everything retailer. I hope never becomes another tacky tourist destination! If you need a single bolt (yes, just one - not a plasti-pak of 20) it's the place to go. If you need a screw that the big chains can't be bothered to carry, it's the place to go. If you need good quality tools, camping gear, garden gear, kitchen utensils, it's the place to go. If you want large outside plant pots, it's the only place to go. For the most part the staff has been helpful and courteous - and they seem to keep an eye on each other and step in to assist if the see someone having some difficulty. read more

Capital Iron is a disappointment to me these days. Ten years ago they had the entire basement of the store devoted to odd and useless trinkets, and there was great stuff to find. I got several antique books, railroad souvenirs, and military surplus from there. It was my favorite place to go. Then half the basement got converted to garden supplies like you can find in a dozen other shops. Five years ago another quarter was changed into barbecue supplies, like you can find in dozens of other stores. Then a few weeks ago I found the remaining quarter almost empty (maybe because of eBay?). Add to that the shrinking camping section, the now almost non-existent fabric section, and a move to yuppie culture and there is nothing left of Cap Iron. Why would I drive downtown when I can get the same experience at any Canadian Tire outlet? read more

Another piece of true Victoria! It's got that weird mishmash-of-a-million-things-that-you-never-would-have-thought-would-be-sold-under-the-same-roof vibe. This is the best place to find reasonably priced Carhartts, premium quality kitchenware, cool chinese antiques, gardening supplies and of course, ceramic pots and containers of every shape and size. I have generally liked Capital Iron in the past. Nice kitchen section. However, this Christmas I purchased an LED flower tree when the Christmas items were on sale. The first one had a light die immediately (lights are not replaceable) so I took it back. The second one was broken when I took it out of the box, and also had a dead light. Exchanged it again. The third one was also broken and missing two flower pieces, but they gave me some spare flowers so I fixed it myself. However, two months in and now four lights are dead. I am passed the point of returning it so I have just wasted money. I am very disappointed that they would sell such a shoddy product and I will be wary of buying anything like this from them in the future. Edit: Upping my review by a star because the manager did reach out to me and try to make things right. But it doesn't change the fact that they were selling an obviously bad product so I remain disappointed with them about that, and I hope that I don't see these items in that store again in the Christmas season. read more

I love Capital Iron, mostly because it reminds me of home. Like all small towns, the hardware store is also the toy store, the giftware store, the household goods store, the garden store, the sporting goods store, the furniture store and the small town fashion mecca, all rolled under one roof. The icing on the cake is this piece of small town charm is in the heart of the city and it's bigger. Every time I come here I find the unusual at reasonable prices and I can relieve any homesickness by browsing the aisles. Love it, love it, and love it! read more

Growing up in Victoria this was my favorite store ever. They used to wreck ships and sell all the cool stuff that came off of them. They also had cool nik naks that you couldn't get anywhere else. They still have some cool stuff but for the most part they are pretty vanilla. Ultimately, the store is okay but the prices are a bit high. read more

I agree with Sean T 's comment above -what used to be a unique treasure-house of hard-to-find hardware, military surplus, hardware and lighting items, has become mainstream. I can find most of their stock just about anywhere, and for hard-to-find hardware I have to trek out to Paine's or Steveston Hardware. I can recommend their Christmas lighting and ornaments, based on last year's offerings. They were still carrying some of the rare incandescent lights (which look SO much better than LEDs), and a large selection of balls, trees, fountains etc; Although I'd rather shop there a decade ago (or two), it's still one of the few decent hardware stores within walking distance of downtown. read more

Capital Iron used to be top on my list for gifts and home items. Not anymore. I have now had multiple encounters with rude customer service staff. The last straw for me was a manager who had a rude and aggressive attitude when I inquired about the return or exchange of my dysfunctional food dehydrator (~$160.00 cost). Of note, the dehydrator was broken when I opened the box. The store would not take it back because it was past the 30 day return window. I had purchased the dehydrator for a family Christmas gift and opened the box for the first time in May to dehydrate backpacking meals. I could not believe how rude the manager was. Ultimately, he took my phone number to have the purchasing manager call me back. I never heard from them. I will no longer shop at Capital Iron and I do not recommend the store to anyone I know. It's too bad because I highly value supporting local businesses. read more

My wife and I went to capital iron to find a rain coat. They did not have the size in a particular Helly Hansen coat she liked so we asked if they could order one in for us. They put our name on a "list" and said they would call us when one comes in. A week and half went by so I called to see if there was any word on jacket. When asked they had no record of our names or any jacket that was supposed to be ordered in. They again placed our name on the "list". That same day I went to the Helly Hansen website ordered the exact same rain coat, same price, free shipping and it arrived less than a week later. Now going on 3 weeks since we were in the store we get a phone message from Capital Iron stating "sorry but your name was crossed off the list, there sold out of that particular jacket"... Actually Capital Iron, you are now crossed off our list. read more

Capital Iron is one of my favourite stores in Victoria. Every time I have out of town guests over, I take them here as it's not just a store, it's an experience! This store has just about everything, and all the funky little gadgets inbetween that you can't find anywhere else. There are a fair amount of higher price items, sure, but there's a great amount of cheaper items, and ongoing sales. Wander into the basement and you can check out some cool antique relics. You can't buy them, but it's cool to touch and see them. Sidney location is much smaller but still has a good variety for that neighborhood. Can't wait to check out what they have in the new store opening in the Westshore! read more

I never write reviews but my experience with Capital Iron was so terrible that it deserves one. I bought an espresso machine that had an electrical malfunction two weeks in. I called the first day it malfunctioned at 2pm, and they told me not to bring it in because "they were off shift in 30 minutes" and didn't want to have to stay later, even though the store closed in 3 hours. So I brought it in the next day as directed and asked to exchange it for a new one. The staff would not give me a new machine until they replicated the problem themselves. They refused to let me demonstrate the error and insisted I wait until they did it themselves sometime that day or the next day. I instead asked for my money back to go buy it elsewhere as I did not like how I was being treated, only to be told by the manager that I would be charged 20% of the 700$ machine in a restocking fee because I had used it. I left very frustrated, and came back to find they were unable to replicate the error in store as it was electrical and only happened some times (bad wiring?). I had to take the machine home, wait for it to malfunction again, take a VIDEO and ONLY THEN would they refund me. My entire interaction with the staff members and manager was unpleasant; I felt like I was being treated like a criminal trying to scam them. After finally being refunded on my third visit to the store in one day, I took my money elsewhere to buy the exact same machine, and never plan to shop there again. Short version: terrible customer service, terrible store policy that requires a 20% restock fee on home electronics if they are out of the box. Shop elsewhere. read more
