Capella Pizzeria definitely deserves their high ratings. I came here with some others to pick up some pizzas for a family gathering. I was pleased that the had a large variety of options but even had gelato and desserts as well. Large pizzas run $21-$27 are thin crust. For pizzas, we got two of their Margheritas, Meat Buster and Palermo. They were all good and a hit at the family party. The meat Buster and Palermo had meat but honestly not a whole lot. They were good though. All the pizzas were lots of flavor and the sauce to cheese ratio was perfect. I loved that they had chili oil, extra dipping sauce, cheese, and peppers on the side for you to grab. While our time there we even had some gelato which was good and got some cheese cake to go. Our pizzas came out quick. The shop is very large with plenty of places to sit, even good for a large party. I loved that they even had plates on the table ready to go. Food first, thoughts after... This is my favorite pizza place ever. I realized I have never reviewed them despite coming here multiple times that I had to come brag about them. The restaurant is spacious and clean. The vibes are upscale costco/sams. All the ingredients are fresh from Italy and the Italian wood fire oven cooks them perfectly. The wait is never long and the portion sizes are my favorite. Even after eating their pizza, I have never felt bloated or "bad" afterwards like some of my other experiences with pizza, which has strayed me away from pizza all together. I see why this huge family friendly pizza place is so popular and been voted an area favorite! Service is very friendly and the place is huge with lots of room for big groups! It has authentic Italian vibe in type of pizza and sauces offered. Love the blues and motorbikes around, some with real flowers blooming in the basket! This pizza is the thin crust without marinara sauce but the sauce is offered as a condiment along with many other great options like chili flavored olive oil, parm cheese, extra oregano, etc. I gave the pizza 4 stars as ours did not seem fresh and cooled off really fast. We arrived at 4:50 pm on a Saturday with the place totally empty but within 20 minutes, they had 25 or more customers! I suspected we got a prepared pepperoni as it was out in under 5 minutes. Loved the sauces and condiments offered and the abundance of seating. There were outside tables too! Seating are benches so bring your own seat pad if needed. Tried this place in Uptown and it was surprisingly good for a pizza joint! My pizza had peppers and tomatoes on it! Dough on pizza was made fresh and I really enjoyed my little bite to eat! Amazing pizza place! Ordered through DoorDash pick up, but when I came to pick up the pizza, I realized we should've just come and eaten at the restaurant! The place is sparkling clean, smells fresh, has lots of inviting long benches to do family style meals, an open kitchen where you can see them make your pizzas in the woodfired ovens, and lots of tempting gelato and desserts in glass displays. I also love that they had all you can serve yourself, dipping sauce, condiments, and olive oil. Putting the olive oil in a little pouring container is a nice touch. The servers immediately refilled it when it was out. Pizza was delicious, and I can tell it's made with imported wheat because I do not get bloated after I eat it. We got the margarita and la grassa. It is the traditional style and was a nice change of pace from the Americanized version we usually have available. They also have gelato and desserts. We tried two cannolis. Absolutely love love love this place. The staff is so nice and friendly and I can't get enough of the pizza. They have Italian decorations around the walls and play Italian music. It sounds a little cheesy but it does make me feel like I'm experiencing some Italian culture and I like it. The pizza crust is so so good. It's not gummy and chewy and taste and bites just like how natural bread should be. I wish they would put more basil on the pizzas but other than that it doesn't disappoint! However I do want to mention that pizzas are made differently and many people have different preferences. Their pizzas do have a soggier base similar to New York pizzas but I like it that way as well as crunchy ones. I find their ingredients are more natural. If you don't like it that way and soggier bases, then this place may not be for you. They have amazing desserts too. Aside from them messing up my order twice I still enjoy it. This restaurant is the most authentic Italian pizzeria experience in town. They make Napoletana style pizzas and their attention to detail is outstanding. The signature of a Naples-style is the chewy dough, sweet tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese. I had the Palermo, and it was amazing. Sausage, sweet red peppers, caramelized onions, San Mariano tomato sauce and mozzarella. The pie had a thin bottom and puffy bordering crust; the outside had a little char from the oven. The toppings are perfectly portioned. They were fresh and tasty, and they complemented the remarkable crust. A nice set up, a fairly roomy and casual dining area, a cooler with bottled beverages, a wide open kitchen where you can watch all of the action, and a cute gelato and dessert cooler. It doesn't have a lot of character as it is a strip mall with some Italian memorabilia on the wall. The location is convenient for me so that is a big plus. I really wanted to give 5 stars, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. The pizza was good, but not great. We had a Palermo pie. The ingredients used are mainly quality. However, it was not the highest quality of crust. Truly elite authentic crust with proper rise and a nice crust with crispy bits - like the best of the best, doesn't leave you feeling heavy afterwards. I'm not sure if it's the flour itself or the recipe, but the crust wasn't quite right in my opinion. This pizza would be very very average somewhere like NYC, though many in Birmingham will find it above average. The Friday evening when I went it was very very busy with a full staff working hard in the kitchen and we waited a little under an hour for a pie to go. The staff was so kind and friendly and the setup was good. If the crust was improved I could add another star, but the pizza was just really missing something. I would also like to see some different topping options. I think people may be overrating it to some extent because of the hype. All in all I hope to see them succeed. Found by Yelp, never even knew it was there, placing order is kinda like the soup nazi on Seinfeld, better know what you want before you get to cashier, they don't ask questions and don't tell you anything. Had to learn by watching others. They are bar to make your own dip, and you get topping near the front door. You get your own flat ware. Kinda loud. They have about 10-12 pizzas that it and they come all in one size. You by bottled drinks, and some beer and wine by the glass. Kinda loud a least when we was there. Inside has some decor but not over the top. The pizza is wood oven so be prepared for a little burnt bottom. It's an Italian style (best way to say it) that means soft limp bottom crust. got the meat pizza it was great has well has a chocolate cannoli and a triple layer chocolate cake. Ingredients are a little sparse - typical for this style - but the flavor is great! They offer some good pizza flavors or a build-your-own option if you prefer to satisfy your own taste. We like the energy and authenticity of the group of guys who started Capella and their dad adds a nice touch when he's here. The picnic tables are an interesting mix in the atmosphere but fun for families and groups. The biggest turnoff for us is the stark white fluorescent lights in the kitchen area that overflow into the dining area, which isn't separated from the kitchen area at all. Just one big open room separated by a counter and dramatically different lighting. We heard of this place thru word of mouth and decided to have lunch. It was a sunny, fall like day with a light breeze. I liked the concept as soon as I walked in. The business plan shines thru and is truly evident in almost every facet. The menu is small. To me, this means they are focused on what they do best. The staple, Caputo 00 wheat flour is stacked in the dining area as if to say "we are doing this right" and trust me, they are. Theres water, soft, drinks, beer and wine available from self serve coolers. Theres Gelato and other Italian desserts too! Orders are placed at the counter and the food is prepared in the kitchen which is entirely open. Two huge wood fired ovens dominate the space and are named after the Italian cities of Rome and Napoli. After you order go ahead and make a stop at the "fixings" table. Here you can get all the seasonings you need for your pie. Red Sauce, crushed pepper, grated parmesan cheese, spicy olive oil and more. Service is friendly and prompt. We ordered two personal pies and a side salad. The side salad was delicious with fresh greens and is big enough for two. By the time we finished the salad, boom, our pies were ready. I'd estimate they are running the ovens at 750 deg F or slightly higher. We asked for extra crispy and they were prepared accordingly. The crust is light and airy with just the right amount of chew. The marinara is light, zingy and says San Marzano to me. Everything we had was fresh, and made with high quality ingredients. Give this place a visit you wont be disappointed. We love Capella's, and frequent them about once a month! The service is so fast, and it is a great place to have a quick meal with our little kids and family. The crust, usually the least exciting part of a pizza, is my favorite part of these pizzas when dipped in the incredible sauce. The staff is always friendly, and they are very efficient. We actually stopped by here after we already had lunch....figured we would get a personal pan to share just to try it out. Their personal pan is a good portion! Enough to fill even someone with a larger appetite, so kudos to Capella for that. Pizzas are made fresh and come out in less than 10 minutes. Staff is really nice. I love the self-serve aspect of it all - order at the counter, clean up after yourself, get your own dipping sauce making the combination you want, etc. Awesome. Now, onto the pizza. So.....have y'all had Pizza Grace? Well, they are the best pizza in town....and this is right up there. Capella's pizza is just a touch below as it didn't quite manage to have its pizza crispy all the way to the center (tip of the slice). Literally just the center inch or so, the rest are perfect. Pizza Grace does manage to get the crisp all the way to the center. It was a LONG drive home! Only been open about 2 months, Capella Pizzeria is making waves in Birmingham. The word is spreading and Capella does not disappoint. Located off a busy section of 280 in The Fresh Market shopping center, Capella does it's best to keep it simple and straight forward. There's no drive-thru, but ample parking. I also cringed when I heard it was off 280, but navigating in and out of that shopping center was easy peasy thanks to the traffic light. Capella leaves nothing to the imagination. The entire front of the pizzeria including the double doors are framed in glass. As you approach you can already see the entire restaurant from the outside. As you open the doors you're greeted by italian music, high ceilings with a brightly lit open dining room, and italian football/soccer team jerseys hanging from the ceiling. Of course there's got to be something Ferrari on the wall. The open dining area consists of about 15 large picnic tables with accompanying dual bench seats. On every table are a small stack of disposable plates and a roll of paper towels. Adjacent to dining area is what could only representative of a "kitchen". You may stand and inspect the chefs as they roll out the dough, place your ingredients and then slide it into the wood fired oven. Towards the front is a small register where you place your order and to tempt your palate, their gelato display is directly next to the register. There's no soda dispenser as most of the non alcoholic beverages are bottled and in a refrigerated case. Along the front wall is a quaint little "condiment" station where large jars of Salt, Pepper, Red Pepper, Basil and Oregano await. Wait, there's more! You will also find a small "kettle" of Spicy Oil and Olive Oil. Finally there is a large container of their homemade marinara sauce... Yom Yom Yom Yom! Obviously taking pride in being as authentic as possible, Capella boasts all fresh ingredients such as San Marzano tomatoes, Caputo Italian flour, extra virgin olive oil and buffalo mozzarella that arrives weekly from Italy. As if that's not authentic enough for you, all the pizzas are cooked in wood fired ovens made in Naples. That's in Italy by the way. To get that last kick in the butt, they will purposely "slightly" char the well-done edges of your pizza crust for that homemade experience. This was our first time and we decided to order to go. We tried the Meat Busters and the Diavola. The pizzas had a couple minutes which gave me time to enjoy the italian music and ambience. When my name was called, I was handed two very warm and delicious smelling pizza boxes. Thus the very LONG drive home! It took everything I had not to pop open a box and steal some toppings! The Diavola was topped with a healthy amount of spicy italian salami, speckled with spicy Calabrian peppers with San Marzano tomato sauce and fresh buffalo mozzarella cheese. The Meat Buster was topped with italian sausage, pepperoni, ham, San Marzano tomato sauce, fresh basil and buffalo mozzarella cheese. The crust was so thin, toppings were falling off the slices as I struggled to keep the pizza intact! The ingredients hit your taste buds like a ton of bricks as there's hardly any crust. The salami is overpowering and rightly so as that's what a good italian salami is supposed to do. I found myself taking small bites of the large crust edge to satisfy my palate. The freshness of the ingredients are unmistakable right down to the basil, tomato sauce and mozarella cheese. The 4 containers of marinara sauce from the condiment station were used as dipping sauces for the crust edges. Yom Yom Yom Yom! The young man whom I interacted with was personable and very friendly offering me a small box to put my 4 containers of marinara. Doing it with non-judgmental eyes is exactly the kind of professionalism that will bring me back to this eatery! Plus they have a few other pizzas on the menu and oh, did I mention the gelato?!? i seriously love Capella Pizzeria. every time i go, the food is just so good and tastes really fresh, like you can tell they actually care about what they're making. the pizza is always super flavorful, the crust is perfect, and everything just comes together so well. it's one of those places where you end up thinking about it again later because it was that good. one thing that really stands out is how fast everything is. even when it seems a little busy, they're so quick and organized, and you're not just standing around forever waiting for your food. it makes such a difference, especially when you're really hungry and just want something good without a long wait. the whole vibe there is really nice too--it's chill, easy, and just a good place to grab food without it feeling stressful or rushed. it's become one of my go-to spots because it's always consistent, and i know i'm going to have a good experience every time i go. overall, i'd 100% give it 5 stars. amazing food, super fast service, and just an all-around really great place. read more
