The Mellow Mushroom located in downtown Birmingham is such a solid spot when you're in the mood for pizza. First of all, I just want to say how much I appreciate that they have their own parking lot. It is small and sometimes difficult to get out of, but I'll take any parking I can get in Five Points. It's very close to UAB, which is also convenient for hungry students like me. The food itself is delicious! I would really recommend getting one of their specialty pizzas as opposed to just a plain cheese or pepperoni. My personal favorite is the Great White. It's got an olive oil and garlic base and includes different cheeses like ricotta and sheep's milk feta. I believe there are also tomatoes and onions on it as well. It's such a good combination of different flavors. Overall, I haven't had a bad experience yet at Mellow, and would recommend others check it out. read more

We were craving pizza so we came here for lunch. The waitress was very friendly and there weren't a lot of people inside. We order pepperoni pizza rolls ands half and half pizza (half pepperoni and half house special minus tomatoes and black olives). Despite it not being a crowded it took a long time for the pizza rolls to come out. You can choose 2 dipping sauces. We chose marinara and ranch. The ranch was good. You can tell it was homemade. The marinara was very bland. It didn't have any taste to it. The pizza was.......ok..... the toppings were good but the crust was burnt and you could taste it. 3 star, slow service, long wait for food; this place was just ok. A bit of a wait on a Saturday evening after sitting at the bar area. Took awhile to be greeted and have our food and beverage orders taken. The food was overall good (think greasy cheesiness); got the pepperoni mellow rollz which were a good option after being told the spinach dip had run out that night. Also got the Great White pizza, which satisfied the hunger. Service was much not great, not sure if they were understaffed. Mellow Mushroom has been a staple of mines since high school since it's location is only a small walk from my alma mater. One of my favorite, and usual, orders is the smoked buffalo wings. This time, I ordered the wings with a pepperoni and buffalo chicken pizza. My best friend and I usually order our food to split and this was our first time trying the buffalo chicken pizza. It wasn't bad but I think I'll stick to the pepperoni from now on. I ordered a margarita and absolutely loved it, though. I'm an old fashioned margarita girl and their margarita is definitely in the top 5 of margaritas I've tried. My best friend tried the jalapeno margarita and I tried a sip as well. She was a big fan of it and I was not so I wouldn't recommend it but if the spice of alcohol isn't enough for you, give it a try. The servers are always kind and accommodating and the same can be said for this time. Once, I was heartbroken to order buffalo smoked wings to be told that they didn't have any wings but that was, luckily, not the case this time. Last Night, my friend and I were craving pizza and decided to stop by Mellow Mushroom. We were waited on by Camp and Ysabel who were extremely helpful throughout our visit. We ordered the Bruschetta as an extremely delicious appetizer! I ordered the Holy Shiitake Pie and my friend ordered the Pacific Rim. Everything was cooked to perfection. While we were there, the restaurant hosted a Trivia Night with a broad spectrum of questions. They announced they do this every Tuesday from 6-8. This is something my friend will join in on soon. One thing I took note of was Ysabel's knowledge of guests that frequent bingo night. I feel this is an admirable level of awareness, especially in the service industry. My roommates and I decided to go here after we all got done with classes this past Friday. I've been to the Mellow Mushroom that is located past the Summit but not this one. I have to say I was not disappointed with this location just like I was not disappointed with the Summit location. My go to order is always the holy shiitake pizza. I always get this one because the red sauce on other pizzas always give me heartburn unfortunately. I love the garlic aioli on the pizza. The pizzas here are always so fresh and the crust is always crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. They make the pizzas fresh in an oven so it is always nice and hot. I had no issue with this locations service either, they gave us our food in a very timely manner and refilled our drinks without us even having to ask. read more

But I was able to swing through in the early afternoon and get a togo pie. The place is nice. It's what I expected as far as crowd demographic. Hipsters and indie rock playing in the background. Very clean place with a bar and TV's. I ordered a large White Rabbit which is a 16' veggie with white sauce and assortment of veg. It's a decent tasting pizza, not gourmet but good. My family has always loved going to a Mellow Mushroom and we've never been disappointed in their food. Their oven roasted wings are a nice appetizer that my mom and I always share while my brother opts for the pretzel bites with the beer cheese. Our food always comes out hot and fast and there are a variety of gluten free and vegan options. The sizes there are what I would say good for the price, their small pizzas are usually big enough for me to have leftovers, and the medium pizzas are enough for me and my mom to share. My brother is vegan and he usually gets the veggie calzone and always likes it. Mellow's is a restaurant that we can suggest when we want to go out to eat that can fit all of our dietary needs. They have Tuesday night trivia that is fun to listen to and isn't too loud where we have to yell over. The veggie lg pizza delivered without any add-ons was pretty tasteless. Couldn't taste garlic or paprika or onion. The olives weren't tasty. I tasted no tomato in the marinara sauce. I paid $39 delivered for a large, which is about three meals. Frozen pizza from Publix on sale is cheaper and tastier. I even doctored this up with garlic powder, salt, pepper, mozzarella, red pepper and it still didn't help. Mushrooms and olives weren't tasty at all. I guess you're forced to make it tasty by paying for extra garlic, meat, etc.. however it was delivered timely with DoorDash and they are generous with their toppings, although pretty tasteless. read more

I wrote a review of this exact location about a year ago, and it still is consistent. Everyone knows I adore consistency, and this place has not changed. The wait time for the food was a tad slower than last time, however, the food tasted the same-- delicious and hot! The spinach dip was still incredible, and the interior was also still clean. I did peek in the bathroom and was pleased to see it was pleasantly cleaned. I am thrilled to give the same review as I did last time, and I look forward to trying another burger or pie next. The theme is still the same--super trippy, hippie, and my style. It gives a very 80s vibe almost with the interior decorations. With an olive oil and garlic base, all-natural grilled rib eye steak, portobello mushrooms, artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, provolone, feta and mozzarella cheeses. 320/370 cal | 400/450 cal | 420/480 cal The pie had all of my favorite things on it so I'm quite excited to try it. The pizza was definitely eye appealing. The portabellas are meaty like the steak so that was delicious. The brine on the artichoke and olives added a salt/flavor that was needed since the base is olive oil. I would have liked more steak. I had to search for it a bit but my other favorite veggies made up for its lack. Upon checking in on Yelp the app gave me free pretzel bites with a pizza purchase. Score!!!!!!!! Stopped in for lunch today on our way back to Tennessee. It's also my very first visit to a Mellow Mushroom, and upon doing my Yelp check-in, I noticed that we received a free pretzel bites appetizer. Thanks!!! We ordered a pizza with everything on a thin crust. Everything on a thin crust is a bit messy, but well worth it if the food is hot, fresh, and delicious. We were happy with our selection. Our server was very slow. We sat on the patio and went either without drinks or food on our table more than 90% of the time. I would've been such an easy sale, if you just brought me a bar menu! Come on people---at this place I couldn't even use the restroom because their indoors were closed off. That really sucks when you're a paying customer and on the road traveling. read more

For those times you don't want Chicago style pizza, or you just can't make it to Tortuga's. Mellow Mushroom has you covered. Full disclosure, the crust was soggy and droopy in the middle. That's my fault. I violated the three topping rule (never order more than three toppings on your pizza). And to add insult to injury, one of the additional toppings was whole sliced tomato. The water from the tomato made the crust soggy. The weight of the extra toppings caused the sag. I would apologize . . . but the pizza was still pretty damn great!!! Overall the crust is well done, firm, and crisp. The bottom is dusted with ample cornmeal. The top is a gorgeous, bubbly brown. Ample sauce and hot, gooey, stringy cheese forms a comfy bed for fresh toppings. It's superb. My only complaint is that the mellow sauce is too mellow. Pizza should have a little kick whether it be the sauce or the toppings. Neither the pepperoni nor the sausage added any zest. To that point, my server was OK but not great. I asked for red pepper (to add some zest). She brought me parmesan. I also had to ask for plates and silverware. Again, the pizza was great so I could overlook some of these things. read more

Ellie and I met a buddy and his mutt for a beer at the Mellow Mushroom on Southside. The beer was cold, the appetizers were tasty and the staff is what you would expect in San Francisco. While viewing the menu I noticed that they had vegan and gluten-free options, which was a plus. While I didn't choose a vegan option, I ordered a medium cheese,spinach, chicken and mushroom pizza. Finally got around to trying this place after living just 5 minutes from it for over a year. Absolutely loved the environment, service, and food! I got the mighty meat pizza, which is not what I'd typically go for, but it pleasantly surprised me and was delicious (especially the crust). I went around 6 pm on a weekday, and it wasn't crowded at all, and service was quick. The restaurant itself was very clean and colorful, with lots of fun decor. I also love that they have vegan and vegetarian options so everyone can enjoy it. I'll definitely return to try some other menu items very soon. Mellow Mushroom is by far one of my favorite pizza places. The pizza is always delicious, and the staff is always kind. The inside of the restaurant is full of interesting color and design, and they have recently received a new menu look, which is also so wonderfully decorated in what I consider a signature look for them. They deserve the 5 stars even with some minor criticisms, one being that it does get a touch pricey and the parking is not always the easiest. In all the times I have been to Mellow Mushroom, I don't think I have ever heard about any special deals or offers (maybe I'm not going on the right days), which I think could be a great way to increase revenue and traction. Parking is not as easy a fix as they are located in Five Points, so I just recommend going around 4:00/5:00pm on a weekday for your best shot at decent parking! read more
