The Deets: My friends I vacation with had forgotten to bring their fishing rods/tackle on the trip to Holden Beach this year, and even though it's not the optimal time of year to go fishing they wanted to do so during the stay. In looking around for places that might have a good supply of fishing needs, we found The Rod & Reel Shop along the main causeway strip before the bridge going over the bridge to the beach (that big street sign helped). Inside, they have just about every piece of fishing equipment, rods/reels, tackle, and accessories one may need, definitely a good selection. We found all the necessities needed for fishing that would do the trick without breaking the bank. Above all, the staff there were delightfully pleasant, helpful, and wanted to make sure we found what we needed...they were so friendly! On this point alone I'd say they get a great review. Only ding I can find that would be a 4.5 stars technically is that the bloodworms for bait were pretty expensive here but they had some shrimp that was just what was needed bait wise. If you want to look around for fishing gear needs, I'd say put The Rod & Reel Shop in your places to check out as we are happy we did!

We appreciated the UV protection it offered as well as our main reason for the purchase was to provide our young daughter some shade. We took it to the beach hours after purchasing only to realize that it was impossible to assemble, even with multiple people assisting, and that the wind appeared to be too much for the poles and sand bags, to handle. We attempted to take it back and were refused a refund by the employee(s) then the owner as they stayed it has "already been on the beach." My husband questioned "how are were supposed to know that it didn't work like we were led to believe had we not taken it to the beach?" but the manager stood firm. I stopped by for an inexpensive cooler to carry some seafood home. They had the perfect cooler for only $5. The clerk was helpful and friendly. I looked at the surf supplies and another clerk immediately asked if I needed assistance. The fishing gear is unbelievable. And kayaks, they carry everything. I could have spent all day in there. They rent surf boards, paddle boards, bikes and sell fishing licenses and can even set up fishing charters. They are locally owned. They offer free parking. I'll be back on my next visit to Surf City.

I am a novice and was asking some questions about what would work and what is running and what type of equipment would I need to begin a new hobby, on the bays, shore fishing and maybe someday kayak fishing. The staff is professional and courteous however this is a higher end store with quality t-shirts for tourists. There are sales but for the most part, you pay full price.
