Electrical transmission lines reflecting on one of the many puddles at the dog park.

I'm a regular user of this dog park. It's better than nothing, and I'm thankful to have it, but it could be so much better. Here are a few thoughts on maintenance and amenities. On maintenance: Grass is mowed and garbage is taken out, but otherwise very little maintenance is done. The park has a large dog and small dog side. The small dog side is on a gentle slope and gets less use than the large dog side, so it stays pretty nice. The large dog side has large bare patches, is quite weedy, and has multiple muddy areas (one more of a big, perpetual mud *pit*) due to poor drainage. When the inevitable holes show up, they are eventually filled with sand (and often re-dug). Would it be so hard to fill with top soil, and add some grass seed to these and other bare spots? A little soft fencing could protect the areas needing maintenance. A longer term solution would be to improve the drainage, and divide the park to allow the turf in the large dog side of the park to have some regular recovery time. Even just adding some rocks and grading to move water near the water source outside the fenced area would be helpful in the summer. In the spring, the majority of the large dog side of the park becomes a quagmire, and park usage declines dramatically since dogs are often filthy after a visit between late March and early May. Amenerties and environment: The park sits under high tension electrical transmission lines that run for miles. The result is that the wind really blows at this park. Windiest spot in Canton, without a doubt. With nothing to break the wind, a trip to the dog park in the winter is often brutally cold. Even something as simple as hanging some clear plexiglass panels along the western fencing would make a huge difference so that people have a place they can get some shelter from the wind. There is now a very small covered shade structure, which is much appreciated in the hot summer months and during a light rain. I'd estimate the size at about 10'x10', so this is nothing like a picnic shelter sized structure, but for just a few people/dogs it does provide shade. There are a couple of dead trees, and a couple of half dead trees, and a couple trees that are doing ok. There are benches to sit if you don't want to walk around or stand, and there is water running from about late May to early September. There is also a portable toilet in the summer that gets emptied regularly. Dogs need to registered and show proof of vaccinations to get registered, and an electronic lock keeps unregistered dogs out. The vast majority of people and dogs using the dog park are very friendly, and generally get along well. Usage patterns for the large and small dog sides seem to be different, so I'll just speak to the large dog side for a moment: As you would expect, weekends get more use, but there are regulars that come at several times throughout the day. The slowest period is usually around 1-3pm, but there are always exceptions. Rarely do I see more than 8-9 dogs at a time. Usually I see 1-4 dogs. The most I've ever seen was maybe 22 dogs, but that level of usage is extremely rare. Overall, it's a nice community of people and dogs. Unfortunately, having visited dog parks in several states around the country, I view this park as a really mediocre facility. In other places people and dogs have parks with trails, with swimmable water, with forested areas and meadows, etc. I am thankful to have this park, and will continue to be a regular user, but would love to see Canton improve this facility or build a significantly better one. Canton neighborhoods, schools, library, and parks (excluding this one) are great! Would be Nic to bring the dog park up to the standards of the rest of our community.

Now, that week we got a crazy ton of rain so it's natural for places, like this dog park, to flood in spots. But what isn't great is the smell after your dog makes his way out of the mud. I didn't notice at first but once I put him in the car I could smell it. He smelled like wet trash, manure, and mud all mixed together. Not great! I actually drove straight to my mom's house because she has a detachable shower head so I could properly wash him underneath. Even his harness reeked and required a thorough scrub. Why did he smell so bad? It's not just poo from dogs that wasn't picked up. No, I came to learn from my husband later that day that Swift Run was built on a landfill. No wonder he smelled like wet garbage! He literally trudged through it! When it's dry, it's not a problem. But be aware and careful when it's wet! And bring a towel and maybe a bottle of water to rinse your pup off. And a huge bottle of febreeze for your car!

A frequent visitor of the park told us these break-ins have been happening on and off for the past 10 years! TEN YEARS?! Yet you find no signs to be vigilant or security cameras on the property. For a park you are required to pay for and have a permit for, you would think they would solve this issue. Even a simple "surveillance" sign would suffice. Now for the actual dog park: As you enter the park there are giant pot holes all along the drive. Inside the park there is no running water, which leads dogs to drink out of dirty puddles they've been playing in. Patrons due their best to fill metal dishes sitting around but this just leads to dog drinking from still water that you have no idea how low it's been sitting there. The only positives are the grass is mowed and the poop bags are stocked, which is the bare minimum for a dog park.

William Grace Dog Park - It's unfortunate that there aren't lights to allow the park to keep its long summer hours during the dark winter months.

We didn't have a fenced in yard and my pup just needed somewhere to run. City requirements made me so much more comfortable with the other dogs in the park, knowing that they were also vaccinated and registered. The secured entry ensures that not just any dog off the street can wander in. The other dog owners are friendly and responsible. Everyone keeps a close eye on their pet to ensure that play doesn't get too rough and poo is picked up. If someone misses their dog pooing, other folks will either help find the 'land mine' or often pick it up for them. There are multiple water bowls and a faucet with fresh water to fill them up at (which owners take turns doing regularly). There are two separate play spaces, one that's ~four acres and another that's for small dogs under 22lbs. The facility contains several benches and waste receptacles with free dog waste bags. The many "regulars" at this park form an awesome community. Everyone chips in to keep the park in tip top shape, owners know almost all of the others dogs' names, watch out for each other's pets and share both funny stories and useful info that can only come from another dog lover. There's even a playground outside of the park for the kiddos - dog park outings are fun and active for our whole family!

Good size with two areas, one for small dogs and the other for all dogs. Bowls and water is available, even a port o john for people. Only wish there was more trees within the dog area because shade makes for happier dogs and humans. So far all dog people seem kind, professional and aware of surroundings. Great job FH, all cities should have dog parks!

Don't waste your time if you are new or just visiting The city. The majority of responsible dog owners who actively seek out dog parks to socialize their pooches are truly responsible dog owners, updating annual vaccines for their well behaved pups. Shame on the city of Novi for slighting visitors. Not a great impression of welcoming people to your community!

The city of Novi has some great features (authentic Japanese food, 12 Oaks Mall, top-notch schools,…read moreetc) and if you're a canine parent, then you'll be happy to know that you and your tail wagging' pal are covered! I couldn't be happier about a place where my dog can just be a dog and meet other dogs (dogs, dogs, dogs!!). The park is HUGE and split into two parts (small and timid dogs on one side and big dogs on the other). I like this feature because it can be intimidating for an owner to watch their small 5 Ibs chihuahua try to run and keep up with the bigger breeds. The park usually has bowls for water and a fresh water supply (but it is turned off in the winter months). The park provides plastic bags to pick up after your dog and deposit his/her business in the receptor. They also salt around the park (during the icy season) with paw-friendly salt so you don't have to worry about it hurting your pal. As a visitor of the park, you'll need to register your information with the city and get a key fob. Novi shares its dog park with the city of Northville so as members, you can take advantage of both locations. The park is a fantastic avenue for dogs to get out their energy and play with their own kind. My dog enjoys the park so much and I enjoy it too because he sleeps for hours on end after a visit :-)
