I would give this park zero if I could. You have to pay up to $50 to use it and need a key fob. The park is absolutely barren so it looks like the money people pay to use it doesn't go towards it or any maintenance :) there's no water for the dogs either and the grass is overgrown so it's likely your dog will get fleas and ticks. read more

We have been going to the park since it opened so I think this is our third or fourth year. The dog park is divided into two sides for large and small dogs, which works out great for both dogs. The park is in a great location, but there aren't any mature trees or shade source. They added a very small structure on the large dog side but it is very small. On hot days it becomes very warm for both the dogs and people. There are water sources on both sides of the park so that dogs can be given water. Some people have left bowls there, but you may want to bring your own. My favorite part of the park is the friendships I've made with both people and dogs. The regulars like to sit or stand and talk to each other. There are a few benches available for sitting and some people bring chairs. I am so glad the township added this park. It is well loved by many and the annual fee is very affordable. read more

The key card is about to be activated so free usage is about to end. Also, water has been installed so no need to bring any. Maybe a stainless steel bowl on a chain would be great but for now there is a plastic bowl at the water source and no reason for anyone to walk off with it. With regard to owners stepping in unnecessarily during normal play -- just as in a human park with kids, adults need to speak with each other. If someone is being over protective or over reactive, I would advise a more experienced dog park visitor to explain that dogs WILL let the offending party know when they've had enough. I was a little bit of a scaredy cat the first time I went to a dog park, but I feel more comfortable now and let little scraps go. It's great to see a good doggy play fight. People need to remember NO toys bc it's almost like having food and a fight can most definitely break out. read more

We have been bringing our two dogs (both are under 20 pounds) here all summer, and while it's not perfect, our dogs absolutely love coming, it's great socialization for both of them and they have so much fun! I can't speak for the large dog side, as we're never over there, but the small dog side is nice. There's a shelter/canopy type thing built, many benches around the whole park, running water (with a kiddie pool under it), multiple large jugs of water that can be refilled and people have donated bowls so they're all over the place. Finding a place to sit has never been a problem, granted we walk around most of the time with our dogs! The dogs get better exercise and are more willing to play with dogs they don't know super well if we're right there. The grass is mowed, there's trashes and containers of bags (although most people bring their own or donate bags). Occasionally, there's an issue with a more aggressive dog, but if a dog is doing something they shouldn't (aggressively biting- ie- NOT PLAYING), people will ask the dog's owner to leave. It tends to be very busy in the evenings- 6pm onward. During the day, it's pretty much dead. If you're looking to bring toys, tennis balls and have you dog run, come during the middle of the day. Literally no one will be there. One criticism I have, which is pretty big, is that Canton Township requires shots, but DOES NOT require dogs to be neutered/ spayed to enter. While this isn't an issue with our dogs, other dogs (especially males) who aren't neutered are usually VERY aggressive. We all know who's aren't neutered and do our best to keep our dogs away from them. It's not fair to our spayed little girl to be CHASED and humped and bothered the entire time just because one dog isn't neutered and he's decided to bother her. So yeah, we will chase, clap, etc off dogs who are bothering ours. read more

I'm a regular user of this dog park. It's better than nothing, and I'm thankful to have it, but it could be so much better. Here are a few thoughts on maintenance and amenities. On maintenance: Grass is mowed and garbage is taken out, but otherwise very little maintenance is done. The park has a large dog and small dog side. The small dog side is on a gentle slope and gets less use than the large dog side, so it stays pretty nice. The large dog side has large bare patches, is quite weedy, and has multiple muddy areas (one more of a big, perpetual mud *pit*) due to poor drainage. When the inevitable holes show up, they are eventually filled with sand (and often re-dug). Would it be so hard to fill with top soil, and add some grass seed to these and other bare spots? A little soft fencing could protect the areas needing maintenance. A longer term solution would be to improve the drainage, and divide the park to allow the turf in the large dog side of the park to have some regular recovery time. Even just adding some rocks and grading to move water near the water source outside the fenced area would be helpful in the summer. In the spring, the majority of the large dog side of the park becomes a quagmire, and park usage declines dramatically since dogs are often filthy after a visit between late March and early May. Amenerties and environment: The park sits under high tension electrical transmission lines that run for miles. The result is that the wind really blows at this park. Windiest spot in Canton, without a doubt. With nothing to break the wind, a trip to the dog park in the winter is often brutally cold. Even something as simple as hanging some clear plexiglass panels along the western fencing would make a huge difference so that people have a place they can get some shelter from the wind. There is now a very small covered shade structure, which is much appreciated in the hot summer months and during a light rain. I'd estimate the size at about 10'x10', so this is nothing like a picnic shelter sized structure, but for just a few people/dogs it does provide shade. There are a couple of dead trees, and a couple of half dead trees, and a couple trees that are doing ok. There are benches to sit if you don't want to walk around or stand, and there is water running from about late May to early September. There is also a portable toilet in the summer that gets emptied regularly. Dogs need to registered and show proof of vaccinations to get registered, and an electronic lock keeps unregistered dogs out. The vast majority of people and dogs using the dog park are very friendly, and generally get along well. Usage patterns for the large and small dog sides seem to be different, so I'll just speak to the large dog side for a moment: As you would expect, weekends get more use, but there are regulars that come at several times throughout the day. The slowest period is usually around 1-3pm, but there are always exceptions. Rarely do I see more than 8-9 dogs at a time. Usually I see 1-4 dogs. The most I've ever seen was maybe 22 dogs, but that level of usage is extremely rare. Overall, it's a nice community of people and dogs. Unfortunately, having visited dog parks in several states around the country, I view this park as a really mediocre facility. In other places people and dogs have parks with trails, with swimmable water, with forested areas and meadows, etc. I am thankful to have this park, and will continue to be a regular user, but would love to see Canton improve this facility or build a significantly better one. Canton neighborhoods, schools, library, and parks (excluding this one) are great! Would be Nic to bring the dog park up to the standards of the rest of our community. read more

For the area in which it's located, this is a nice addition to the community. I think of it more as a HUGE fenced in yard than a park. No tennis balls or toys are allowed, there's no agility set up for the animals and no water source. I will add in that this park is less than a year old and I know it takes some time for funding to come in, etc. but if you forget to bring your own water, hopefully the person next to you won't mind if your dog takes a sip. The separation of large and small dogs was a first for me. I think it's a great way to keep the large dogs running with other large (20+lbs) dogs. However, due to the suburban area keep an eye out for dogs who are poorly socialized. On more than one occasion a dog has become aggressive because they feel threatened with the number of other dogs within the park. Same goes for the owners. Some people force their dogs into the park, tail between its legs. Some people don't understand that dogs sniff butts and hump (and they'll be SURE to let you know when your dog's behavior is offending them!). My pup has been labeled as an 'instigator' due to his desire to have other dogs chase him. I'm sure if he gets along with a Whippet he can get along with your boxer :) Other owners are super protective and if they see any sort of rough play (appropriate rough play, mind you) they'll step in and if need be kick dogs apart -- unfortunately I've seen this happen. My pup splits his time between the East Coast and MI and when I finally bring him back out here, I'm not sure whether I'll be paying the $50 to have access to this yard. I'll have to debate paying $50 to join the Swift Run Dog Park in Ann Arbor even though it's further away from our home. They do have people out checking the tags on the dogs so if you feel like skipping over the registration fee, be sure to head over midday! read more

I am not a "member," so unfortunately was not able to use the dog park. The park requires a key fob to enter and exit. The park is huge, but didn't look like much. I'm from Chicago, where dog parks aren't hard to find, and I've never seen a park so large and barren. It would have been nice to see something about how to get the key fob posted, but with only 2 dogs there on a beautiful, sunny, 70-degree Sunday afternoon, I think my efforts would be wasted. A wonderful off leash park to let your dogs socialize and burn off energy. The park is divided into a small dog park - for dogs under 20 lbs. and a large dog park, for dogs over 20 lbs. The dog park is only available to dogs and their owners who purchase registration tags through the Township Clerk's Office. It's $25 annually for Canton residents for up to three dogs. ($50 for non-residents) Tips: Bring water! I have seen everything from dog bowls with recycled juice containers filled with water, Hand held water dispensers and we just bring a large tupperware style container with a lid. While there are benches, they fill up fast. If you want to sit while your dog(s) play, bring some chairs. Please, please, please, do not bring food or treats! I've noticed other owners who have done this - not reading the rules, and sure enough dogs became aggressive over these items. Lots of super nice owners and well behaved dogs overall! read more
