This was a great time. We live outdoor activities so the nature was great. Let me explain why the 3 stars then... They are not really on time with their check in and dropping off schedules. We were told we needed to be there 30 minutes before our 11am departure. We got on the bus after 11:15 and it's a 20 minutes drive to the drop off area. Jennifer was great. It was her first day and she was killing it like a pro. They get us to sign the release forms if you didn't do it online then you go inside to get your wristbands and make you payment if needed. They offer boat and other water toys for rent. Once we were inside, McKenzie was nice and helpful. She took our payment and gave us our wrist bands. After that we wait till the groups are ready and things where they need to improve. People that are ready and came on time should not have to wait and lose time on the river. Specially when they are VERY on time to pick you up at 5pm sharp. ... They need improvement, they know it... they are trying. They have an app you can download but good luck with service IMPORTANT warning information given in the "training": It's illegal to operate a canoe while drinking alcoholic drinks. They will give you a BUI (Boating Under the Influence) so be safe and always bring a designated captain or a pirate or both! Whatever floats your boat So, overall it's not a bad spot but definitely come as they open so you don't feel rushed or shorted out of time. Stay safe! read more

Went last Tuesday for the short (1-3 hour) kayak trip. Couple of pro tips. First, if there aren't any generators going, the water levels can be low in areas and the flow is slow. So your trip will take closer to 2-3 hours, without stopping somewhere for a picnic lunch. Which will be possible since there are plenty of places where it is easy to beach yourself and take a break. Second, bring lots of sunscreen. And even so, consider a long sleeve sun shirt and possibly something for your legs. There were no bugs to speak of (we started around 11:30 AM and finished 6.3 miles later at 1:30 PM) Our weather was in the high 80s and mostly sunny, so bring plenty to drink. There aren't any places to purchase anything along the way, so plan accordingly. They have a good selection of snacks and drinks at the store and don't provide anything on the 30-45 minute rides to the Caney and back. The trip was serene. We saw a couple of herons, a raccoon and some muskrats or perhaps river otters. And some hawks, but not the bald eagles. Another couple saw some deer, but we instead saw the infamous river cows. Anyway, we enjoyed it and though we aren't as young as we once were, getting back to nature helped transport us to younger days we spent in the outdoors. read more

I used Canoe the Caney for a kayaking trip yesterday, 6/21/25. It was a great day on the river, but everything before and after we actually got onto the water was a chaotic mess. My group was supposed to depart at noon but ran nearly an hour late. After our trip, we waited a full 45 minutes to be picked up. The communication from the staff was very poor and disorganized. After the trip, a staff member asked me how the experience was. I politely explained that the experience had been rather chaotic and disappointing, to which she just said "got it" - no apology, explanation, or offer to make things right. I look forward to my next trip down the Caney Fork River but will definitely be using another outfitter. read more

We booked the hidden falls excursion on a Friday to see Burgess Falls. My husband and I took the tandem kayak with our little dog. Thrilled they are dog friendly, as we seldom go anywhere without him! Given the fact it's a flat lake/river with no current, it's recommended to take a tandem kayak to share the paddling. Our guide Bill was awesome, our trip was on time to leave, but we did spend a little extra time at the waterfall as we enjoyed it so much! Appreciated him letting us take our time. Three stars because of the process... the 3 hour canoe trip was 8 hours in total because of long bus rides to get dropped off and then to be picked up. About 30 minutes each. They also said our trip would start at 10am and to get there 30 minutes early, however we didn't get to the river until after 11am. When we finished the trip we had to wait over an hour in the sun for the bus. Overall the trip was very pretty but zero current so you need to paddle the entire time, which is fine but a little current makes it more fun. Today was our first time canoeing on the Caney. WOW! The 9-mile trip down the river was magical!!! We saw so many trout... deer and cows drinking from the river... and so many peaceful views that made this experience so memorable. If you are looking for something fun and relaxing, make it down to Canoe at the Caney, and make sure you see Chase! The whole staff is SUPER friendly and helpful! The 1-3 hour kayak trip took 6.5 hours door to door! The actual kayak portion was just over 3 hours and the current can change so that wasn't the problem. It was everything else that took forever. Checking in, the drive to the drop off, waiting to be picked up, etc. The staff seemed very stressed and overwhelmed. Operations were very chaotic and disorganized. My grandma took me and my young kiddos on a canoe down the Caney and it was so much fun! Super pretty, kid friendly and not a ton of strenuous work. There is a light flow on the river and when we went the water levels were relatively low which allowed for us to get out and poke around in the river which was really cool! Water was clear and beautiful. All the workers were very kind and did a great job taking care of us. Prices were very affordable and worth the drive! We will be coming back! read more

Some friends and I recently did canoe on the caney: the haunted canoe trip. It was well done. Local story teller who knows his stuff. This very much added to the authenticity. The biggest bummer was we waited for 30+ minutes on part of the party due to a interstate issue. Communication could have been better. The canoe shop was well stocked- staff was nice. The bathrooms were super clean. And my friends said the BBQ was tasty. Definitely want to check out the Waterfall tour! read more

7/30/2017 Went here with my boyfriend at the time to relax on the river in the canoe. It was a nice peaceful river to float out. Wasn't too busy on this particular day but it was a hot sunny one. Great for tanning and canoeing. I'd come back again when in the area. The staff in the shop and on the bus ride were very friendly and helpful in what we needed to do to safely get to and from our destinations. read more

It's 1:30 am and I just ate dinner after the horrendous Haunted Canoe Trip. We drove 3 hours to camp and do the 8pm tour. My wife got a text saying that we should arrive 30 to 40 minutes early due to a "large group". We rushed to get there and we're probably 45 minutes early. Well... we started 40 minutes late. 8 pm start became a 8:40 start. Arrived at the graveyard starting point. And we met Sam, a very nice man and proud local. I wouldn't say anything negative about this man. However...the entire tour was beyond boring and dragged on forever. We didn't get to the canoes until almost 11:00 pm. All the canoe tour consists of is paddling around in the water to a cove and being told another story by Sam. Probably the 20th story. Now it isn't all his fault because when you have idiots on the tour walking around with "EMF" detectors and asking stupid ass questions, it makes the tour EVEN LONGER!!! It was almost midnight before we got back to the starting point. We were starving, tired and bored into a coma. It wasn't a haunted anything. No jump scares, no costumes, no decorations, nothing that a normal person might expect. DO NOT take this tour unless you want to be bored to death and ready to kill yourself and become a story in Sam's repertoire. Excellent organization! Everything is very organized and well managed. The equipment is in good shape. I felt that if there was an issue on the river, they would help us immediately. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The bathrooms were clean and well taken care of. It is a bit more expensive than what we are used to paying, but it is also a lot nicer than the shacks we usually rent from. Also gas is crazy expensive right now, so driving the shuttle can't be cheap. read more

JWould definitely go back! I brought my personal kayak. The guys unloaded it from my car, and loaded on to their trailer. Transported me to the drop in point. Took us right down to the water with our boats, unloaded and put by the shore. Asked us if we had any questions, and scooted us out on our way! Enjoyed the trip! We took the 3-5 hour trip. It took every bit of 5 hours. We were paddling A LOT towards the end to reach our destination on time. (was not a problem, just be prepared) We stopped and had lunch we brought with us. Water/Gatorade and sunscreen are a must! A couple shallow spots where my kayak got stuck. I had to get out to move it along and well, gracefully flipped...twice getting back in. So, if you have a phone with you, or anything you want to stay dry, put it in a safe, dry case! Phone landed at the bottom of the river, face up, in it's case, thankfully!! It was dry and not damaged. My cooler and gatorade floated down river. Friend picked it up, brought it back and helped me NOT flip over getting back in my kayak. When we got to the pick up point, I got my stuff out of my kayak and left it for them to reload on their trailer to take me back to my car. Once we got to my car they unloaded my kayak, put it back on my car and strapped it down for me. I will definitely take cash for tipping next time as yes, it was his job, but I felt he deserved a tip. I didn't even think about taking cash with me. He had long, wavy hair, super tan, maybe 40's? Said he had been loading boats for 35 years. I wish they had Venmo or something so we could tip the drivers. They WORKED!! Pulling all the kayaks and canoes in and stacking them. On a steep incline at Stonewall bridge dock I think? Beautiful scenery, not much wildlife the day we went. Very calming. Cheers! read more

What a beautiful river. The current let us coast pretty much the whole way making it a very relaxing 9 mile paddle. The river is brisk and clear with wonderful scenery. It is hard to mess that up, right? This business gives it a good shot at messing it up. My girlfriend booked this outing for us thinking it would be a great socially distant way to have some fun. With a website that vows the implementation of COVID safety procedures it should be great. What actually seemed to be the case was business as usual. Employees mostly wore masks in the AM, but when we returned in the PM I could tell they were just over the masks for the day. The school busses used to drop off and pick up from the river could not have been more full with not an empty seat on the busses. Their "6 feet apart" recommendation sign when you first enter the property becomes impossible to abide by because of poor logistics management. The employees actually seemed to be a bit flustered and unorganized having taken on more business than they can seemingly handle. It was a great paddle on a mediocre-at-best kayak, what can you expect for a rental kayak, though? We would not have gone if we would have known their safety implementations were lackluster. We are supporters in doing our part in slowing COVID for our own sake as well as everyone else's. If you are like us, avoid it because I feel like I need to heavily quarantine after that mess. We had a 12pm slot booked for our entire party weeks in advance ,and didn't make it to the water until 2:30 and then were told that we have to make a 3-5 hour trip by 5pm because that's when the last pick up is?! Professional staff who knew what they were doing and had a good process to get all of the people registered in a timely manner. We went on the 9 mile trip. The brochure said it would take 3-5 hours, but on the day we went, the dam was generating so there was a good current. We finished in 2.5 hours, but we paddled a lot of the way and didn't stop or horse around much. The gear seemed to be newer and in good shape. They were on time delivering us to the river, and we didn't have to wait for the bus when we finished. I haven't tried any of the other places but this place did a good job. We will be back. The drivers and the people loading and unloading the boats were great. We did the short trip and were told it would take 1-3 hours to reach the take out point, and that we had to be out by 12:30. We were also told to text the group at a specific landmark so they knew where we were when. We put in around 9:30 and reached the destination by 11:15. Upon arrival, it was made clear that the ONLY time we would be driven back to headquarters was at 12:30. Had we known that, we would have brought supplies for a picnic or something. They said they would try and get us earlier, but instead ended up being 30 minutes late and didn't get us until 1. We called multiple times while waiting and were given excuses or we were told they'd "be there in 2 minutes" which was incredibly inaccurate. We went to speak with a manager and everyone inside was incredibly rude. Do not recommend. Again, the drivers and people unloading were incredibly nice. Props to them. read more

This was a great day activity just outside of Nashville. I came over here with a friend and we had a blast doing the 6 mile track. Next time I'd like to try one of the longer ones. It's gray with a group, bring a picnic, bring some company and some music and you are bound to have fun. The nature is surreal and the scenery is calming and relaxing! I highly recommend this tour operator, you text them during the middle of the tour and you get a pick up at the other end which brings you back to the main parking lot. The associates this time were very nice but the rest of our experience, and previous experiences, are just a mess. The previous time we got there on time but even though we made a reservation - they made us wait over an hour because apparently the busses were already full. The point of making a reservation is to reserve your spot for that time. Otherwise we would've walked in. The bus driver was extremely rude as well and they didn't even bring enough kayaks/canoes for everyone and the drive is about 25 minutes one way - 50 minutes extra of waiting. This time we brought our dog and my husband and another one of our friends told the people at the desk that the 2 of them would stage their cars and the 2 wife's (including me) would ride the bus. They said that was fine. When it came time to board the bus we were not called. I went inside to see what was going on - THEN we were told we were all supposed to go together. They first asked well can you call them? Again, it's a 50 minute drive total. Only when I said no we really need to get on the bus and we had a reservation and we were not waiting any longer (again) did they allow us to get on the other bus. The associates were very nice during the process and I know it was a miscommunication and I'm trying to be understanding but there are so many other better companies- that are even closer to the river - to go to. I sent this in response to the survey sent by Canoe the Caney. Felt it needed to be here also. We arrived 30 minutes as instructed. The safety instructor began 40 minutes after the 10 am time. This was unacceptable. No point in having people text to be picked up since the bus driver waited 40 minutes to wait for ALL of the people. Just tell people to be last because this was also kinda dumb. It showed your lack of business sense and respect for people's time. Oh and THREE tip jars on the bus was ridiculous. And we waited. I would suggest ONE small, not so obnoxious, tip jar. Also TIPS = To Ensure Prompt Service. He was a very nice man. But did not deserve a tip. I waited tables and tip very generously 20-30% for good service (wait staff, hotel staff, etc). The only reason this review is not very dissatisfied is because the boys loading and unloading were AMAZING. They need a tip jar out. I regret not giving them a tip. We were so excited to finally not be dripping with sweat from all of the wasted time that we got on the water as quickly as possible. read more

Halloween tour is Not worth money. Boring and disappointing. We planned a weekend trip to do this tour, stayed first night in Nashville And then drove to cookville! Wish we had stayed at Nashville! What a gorgeous day for a canoe trip! So I bought a Groupon for half off a six mile trip. The trip included a canoe for two people, drop off, and shuttle back. It was still $30 with the discount or $15 per person. I honestly can't imagine paying more than that.. Anyway! Today is my wife's birthday and she loves adventures like this, so off we went! The river was great, can't complain. The reasons I can't give five stars are this. 1. We weren't offered a life jacket, it was an after-thought as we boarded the shuttle. 2. The guy that drove the shuttle 8 miles down windy roads ate pizza the whole way there. Both of these things made me feel just a little uneasy. Otherwise, it was a great trip. We packed a small cooler with lunch and ate right there on the river. Overall, great experience but we may choose to use another canoe company in the future, especially if we bring loved ones. read more

LISTEN TO THE OTHER REVIEWERS... Don't waste your money here! My wife and I decided to buy (on a whim) a Groupon/LivingSocial deal for this place. What a joke. For starters, they run trips down the river at all times of the day, most days of the week. For us peons that ordered Groupons, however, we were all relegated the the same day/time, which is only on Saturdays at 2pm. This means EVERYONE shows up at the same time, as most folks had done what we'd done and then the place had a rush of people all checking in and wanting to go at the same time, which of course they could not maintain. They say to arrive an hour early, but even though we did - which means 1pm, and our booking was for 2pm, it was after 3pm before we were even on the bus headed in the direction of water, and nearly 3:45 before we were on the river. When others say don't waste your money, it isn't even for the sake of the time delays, rude staff, and inability for them to make common business decisions that alleviate issues for the guests and staff, but that your actual trip... what you came to do... doesn't last nearly as long as their website proclaims. They will want to tell you that it varies at different times of the year, and is all based on what the dam is doing at the time, but consistent review and experiences matched our own - the trip lasts LESS THAN HALF of what they claim. Our measly 6 mile trip was supposed to last 2.5-3.5 hours. It took just over 45 mins from start to finish. We barely had to paddle, and when we did, it wasn't for speed, it was for direction to make sure we didn't run into a bank or a tree branch as the water was moving so quickly. Then when the very short trip was over, most folks in our group had to wait over an hour to have a van come back and pick them up! This is just plain unacceptable! I've never seen such terrible preparation or management. Least effective canoe trip my wife or I have ever been on. The only reason for the 2 stars instead of 1 is that the river is actually quite pretty, and the day we went it had rained a bit before we got in, so the whole trip had a beautiful layer of fog that have a sense of mystery and fun to our adventure. We will go canoeing again for sure, but with ANY OTHER company than Canoe the Caney. You've been warned! read more

I love kayaking so I am biased towards liking this place. They are open during this Pandemic time. You can register online for a canoe, kayak, or tandem kayak. Then show up at the time you selected and you will be taken in a bus with many others to the site where you can get in the water. This is not a guided tour. They give you a map and then you follow the river. I found it to be fairly simple and there were others going the same way so I was able to easily find where to exit. We did the 9 mile route and the day we went the river was really flowing so it was easy to complete. I did not like the end part where we had to wait in the bus for awhile to go back as they only go every half hour. It was very hot and there was no air conditioning. You are required to wear a mask on the bus. I think the bus should not have been filled to capacity as well in order to accommodate for Covid. read more

The experience was great until the ghost of Nancy Reagan began harassing my friend. A spirit also beat me with a tire iron until I kissed the asphalt below me. I know I was beaten because by God I did not trip. Very humiliating. My heart has also periodically stopped beating since the visit as well as struggling to walk without pain in my leg joints. I wouldn't take kids unless they are growed up. It could be traumatic and/or they could leave with the ghost of a former first lady trying to get them to stuff her like a turkey. read more

First i will start by saying everyone is nice , and the river is beautiful ... however that is the only good thing i can say about them ... The entire operation is chaos no body knows whats going on NO ONE!!! ... Ive been canoeing many many times with other companies and have never had such terrible service almost no direction signed up online for a noon start time at 12:45 the bus started loading people and we weren't even allowed on that bus ... after complaining to who i assume to be a manager they did put our group. On a smaller bus and took us to the "hub" bc that had already sent my friend there (bc she had her own kayaks) so we saw her for 5 mins before they took her to the water and we Waited yet another 45 mins we ended up getting on the water at 2 pm completely missed being able to go with my friend who we drove an hour to see ... not only are they disorganized but the prices are alot higher then others most places ive been u pay by the boat not person... every other customer we encountered had the same complaints so one one was happy ... I do understand times are different with the pandemic but it really seemed like this was the first day for every single person working there .. will not be back and do not recommend this company read more
