Very rude and disrespectful people that run this business! I never ended up taking my dog to this place as my gut told me not too! I'm out my deposit but at least my dog is home safe with me. I just needed so on leash training they wanted him for 8 weeks and I told them I wasn't comfortable with this they said 6 weeks would be fine then but not to expect good results. As the date came closer I called to cancel and was hung up on once I finally was able to reach someone. When I called back I again had to leave a message to which Jason called back the next day only to be rude talking over me constantly and when I told him I was just going to do what I needed to do ( by keeping my dog and not send him there) he started yelling at me and asked if I was threatening him, and then proceeded to tell me that this world was filled with disrespectful people. Our dog was at Cannon River Kennels for 3 nights and when we picked her up, she had abrasions on the left side of her face, nose and shoulder. We spoke with both owners Jason and JJ. JJ said it was her anxiety and she was trying to escape the kennel. No measures were taken to stop her from this action. When asked, as a pet owner if you picked up your dog in this condition, wouldn't you be concerned? Jason said, no he wouldn't. If you're ok with Jason's answer, this place is ok for you. Love this place. Yes they are about 20-30 min south of the twin cities but they are also a great value and extremely accommodating. I had to extend my dogs stay twice this time do to changes in my work trip, and they had no problem accommodating my needs. I can't believe Cannon River Kennels only has one review here! Each time I am there I always start chatting with other people who have had their dogs trained here and everyone keeps coming back. I had my female lab trained her with their bird and gun intro and then the Intermediate training. My wife was constantly afraid that the cost of the Intermediate training would be not worth it...then our dog came home. Her behavior was a world of a difference. Working with these guys is great. I worked with J.J. for the most part and I easily trust these guys. We have also boarded our dog here and are looking to do it again. They were willing to extend her training while she was there and took her out and worked with her! Beyond that, including the training it was cheaper than anywhere in the twin cities. There is only one small difficulty. As it is a small company ran by 2 individuals and their families the hours are a little bit more difficult for a drop off and pick up. I pretty much always need to take off work (though Saturday morning is available, it just usually doesn't work out for me). I will take off work to support these guys though! read more

I can't recommend these guys enough! When I finally decided to get my first gun dog (we always had them growing up, but it was time to be an adult on my own) I put a year and half worth of time and research trying to find the "perfect" dog. I called breeders, trainers and toured more than enough kennels across Minnesota and Wisconsin. And then I met the guys from Cannon River Kennels at the Game Fair last year. I was sold after a 10 minute conversation with them. In the 18 months of research and conversations I've had, I've never felt so comfortable and confident in both the kennel and people that run it. I purchased a lab puppy from them and she (Dagny) is the greatest decision I ever made! With the puppy they include an introductory gun and bird course that is 2 weeks in order to guarantee that you get a true "gun dog". She completed the course and I immediately signed her up for the intermediate course. Naively, when I first decided on getting this dog I thought I would do all the training on my own. I mean, come on, I've read all of Richard Wolters's books, watched Dokken's videos and bought out the training aisle at Cabela's. Then I actually got the puppy. She is hands down the best dog that anyone in our family has had to date and she deserved way better than what I could offer as a novice (or even the experienced family members I have) for her to reach her potential. Deciding on Cannon River's training course was easy when you know that you will have this dog for years and it's worth the investment up front. That being said, the training programs they offer are very reasonably priced compared to other kennels I had researched prior. They also go above and beyond between trainings. I know that they are busy guys, but there have been a couple times that I've reached out for advice between trainings and they take the time to ensure that Dagny is successful and healthy and that I'm informed. I've actually gotten better advice from them than I've gotten from our vet (whom I love, so that's saying a lot) and that's because they know these dogs. If you have the opportunity to go meet with them, do it. Talk to them and you'll know exactly why I chose them. I would also like to comment on the review below in which their dogs got sick. Unfortunately, anytime there are multiple animals of any kind together there is a risk of infection even when vaccinated (think of the first month of school for children...ick!) It's a risk you take when choosing to board or have your dog trained. While having a gun dog is new to me, boarding dogs is not. I have a 10 year old pug and I have more trust in these guys than I do of anyone else. Cannon River Kennels require all the same vaccinations/documentation and veterinary liability waivers as any other boarder or kennel. They don't want your dog to get sick just as much as you don't. They reassure you that if there are health issues, you will be notified, and I absolutely believe that they would. If there was an issue, it's simply in their best interest to do so because having a sick dog in their kennel risks their livelihood. Bottom line health wise, when I've picked up my dog she's been bathed, had her nails trimmed and was as happy and healthy as the day I dropped her off. read more

They did a good job with introducing my dog to guns and birds but both dogs became ill during their 2 week stay. One contracted bordatella while there after the first week (no phone call to pick her up) which manifested into full blown pneumonia. The other dog picked a Urinary Tract Infection. Ended up spending more on vet bills than the training with no offer to offset this added expense. read more

JJ and Jason at Cannon River Kennels exceeded my expectations in every way. They were more than accomodating, since I live in Texas and wanted them to train my dog. Upon completion of the Intermediate school, they spent 3 hrs with me going over every type of training to do with my lab. They have very clean, temperature controlled facilities and fed my dog high quality dog food. My dog is a hunting, swimming, and retrieving machine. I have had four dogs trained at Cannon River Kennels. Three of them had marginal hunting drives (When you only spend $400 on a lab you get what you pay for and you are truly rolling the dice on their true hunting drive). JJ and Jason worked hard with them and they became decent dogs in the field. It was time for my 4th lab and I decided to purchase a pup directly from JJ and Jason. All I can say is I now get asked "where did you get her from". She is "that dog" in the field. She out works, out hustles and marks birds duck hunting like no dog I have ever had. I have seen her break ice to retrieve a duck in late November. I have had buddies ask me to kennel her so their dog can get some retrieves while pheasant hunting in North Dakota. Sadie also is a beloved family pet. She sleeps with my 11 year old daughter every night. You always get what you pay for in life. A dog and how they are trained are no different. read more
