Filled with restaurants, candy, ice-cream, souvenir, pubs, a few wine-tasting's and the aquarium, it's a quick, hour must-see after the aquarium that you could walk through. Typical of what a tourist spot would have, it's sure to please most. Bike amd kayak rentals can also be found here. Parking is in lots ($10-15) or metered stalls. read more

TL;DR: A bunch of shops and restaurants by the ocean. Other than the aquarium, I would pass. I was not really sure what to expect, I just know that everyone that comes to Monterey said that I had to go to Cannery Row. Well I did, and really did nothing. There is a mix of shops and restaurants such as Bubba Gumps and the Cannery Row Brewing Company (meh, pass on it too). The shops sell Monterey Souvenirs and hats for those bright California summer days. The main anchor of Cannery Row is the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The aquarium is def worth a visit. It is a little pricey, but probably the best aquarium you will ever get to visit in your life! There are a few parking garages around. We paid about $15 to parking (no in and out privileges). Also most of the street parking is for 2 hours only, even though you pay, you are only paying for 2 hours max. Please be aware of this as we saw many cars getting ticketed. read more

Waterfront Row in Monterey 'Ello chaps! So, bad in the day Cannery Row was a place where men packed sardines into cans and shipped them off to Dominos Pizzas around the world. Why people eat sardines on pizza is beyond me. But, I also don't get the ham and pineapple thing either. But hey, that's Hawaii, not California, and we're talking about Monterey, California in this review. Cannery Row has been the site of several movies over time - a few you've probably never seen before. That's cool. Today's Cannery Row is more about the shopping and restaurant spots. It's a cute area and launch spot for several water tours - including whale watching tour. Wish I knew about that before. There's also Monterey Aquarium located on Cannery Row; Monterey Aquarium was the inspiration for the aquarium featured at the beginning of Finding Nemo II. read more

As crowded and busy as it was, we loved walking up and down, going in and out of stores, looking around, eating the clam chowder and enjoying the ocean view! It's just s great little place to walk around and check things out! Yes it's super crowded and touristy but what do you expect?? Lol I enjoy peace and quiet but I also I enjoy the lively hustle and bustle especially coming from the valley. There's places to go in Monterrey for peace and quiet and there's touristy places with lots of people and crowds! They have the best of both worlds! I don't mind wither way! Always a pleasure to come to Monterey but even more when cars are involved. Came to support my friends in #FuelRun, #GoldRushRally & #ExoticsOnCanneryRow... can't express enough in words of how supportive The city has been for the Auto Week and the auto community. Nice waterfront area to walk around, have a bite to eat and grab a souvenir. You have some ocean view points where you can relax for a while and maybe spot a sea otter which was what we saw or another sea animal. Not all food shops where open on Wednesday when we went, don't know if hours vary by business but it was still a nice experience. read more

If you came to Monterey and were looking for some magical place that you thought existed while growing up (that's what I thought as well), you may have been disappointed with what you saw from the Wharf. Truth be told, there really isn't MUCH to see in Monterey, CA. It's a beautiful and quaint town, but you aren't going to be preoccupied much by just walking along the pier and checking out the beach. That's where Cannery Row comes from. No, it's no "Canary Row." I believe Monterey, CA has some big history with fish canning and that's where the name comes from. There's also some big relationship to John Steinbeck as well (I believe it was the setting of one of his novels). You don't have to park right at Cannery Row since that requires meter payment. There's a plethora of parking spots uphill about 5-10 minutes walking distance from the row. The parking is in residential neighborhoods and should be free all day. I especially recommend parking next to the park on Spencer Street because it's close and you won't bother residents. Cannery Row is literally a long street filled with a lot of touristy as well as vintage shops. For some reason Cannery Row also has a long supply of chocolate shops (such as Nestle and Ghirardelli) and so if you have a sweet tooth, this place is perfect for you. Don't forget the big Dip in Dots store and all the free chowder samples too! If you get tired of just shopping, the aquarium is right at the end of Cannery Row and there's also Pebble Beach too. It's a pretty street with a good amount of shops. Don't expect it to be the "be all end all," but it's a nice stop on your list of things to do in Monterey, CA. Shop well and prosper, read more

The walk there from fisherman's warf is nice but it's a deserted place w just a hotel and not much else. Better to drive 15 minutes to Carmel by the Sea if you want to go shopping. Maybe I'm missing something here though. A Secret alleyway perhaps? read more

Nice place to take a break off the 1 on the way to SF. Took photos nearby of Monterey's version of Fisherman's Wharf and stopped by Cannery Row to check out their stops. I immediately went into Ghiradelli, knowing well that they would give us a sample chocolate. They have a pretty nice view in the back of their shop. Unless your visiting the Aquarium, i would probably skip eating here and just stay long enough to get out of the car, check out a few places and head up on your way to your real destination! read more

-My husband and I just returned from a trip to Monterey. This was my 1st trip as a retired person, and this is absolutely what we think of when we say "retirement!" -I have been to Cannery Row in my younger years.. (1980-85). Also my Mom has been to the coastal area for more years than I can account for. -As stated, I have just returned from a trip to Monterey, including Cannery Row and other attractions after .. maybe 15 years.. I am sorry to say that I was SO disappointed!! -Why? Every store we went to was filled with the same CHEAP souvenir stuff.. shot glasses, magnets, hoodies, T-Shirts... socks.. stuffed animals.. BS STUFF!! I was SO SAD!!! .. this is also what has happened to Pismo CA...another story... -I had hoped to purchase artwork from local artists to offer as a gift to my daughter and her husband as birthday gifts. I latter determined that the place where REAL ARTIST are listing \offering is on ETSY .. -And I get it!! This is where they can make the best profit for their work!! They have EARNED that!! Merchant stores that charge too much commission on the offered Artists work... You will lose out.. And it seems to be my observation that you will go OUT OF BUSINESS! -I have now determined that I will NOT TRAVEL to find the best artistry!! I will only go to ETSY!!! -BUT I will continue to travel for different reasons!! There are many to be enjoyed. -History, Aquarium, Beaches, Scenery... etc.. (but not shopping!!) read more

The four stars has nothing to do with any of the stores, restaurants, or other tourist flypaper around Cannery Row, and everything to do with the fact that I simply adore the divine John Steinbeck. I have a weird crush on him. I have a thing for dead guys who wrote really good when they were still around. When we visited brother in Mountain View, I was excited to see on the map that Monterey and Cannery Row were within easy distance. We came, we walked up and down, we soaked up the sights, we left. I thought it was a really cool place and loved seeing all the nicely restored canneries. I do hate crowds, and it was crowded -- even more so than usual I understand, since there was some kind of big racing event at Laguna Seca that weekend (and I don't pretend to know a thing about racing), so motorcycles and their riders were out in full force. But I loved being in Steinbeck territory, and that's all I came for. Done and done. Oh, and we actually parked near Fisherman's Wharf, where I guess the parking is a lot easier to find, and walked up to Cannery Row. It was a hike, but a very pleasant and easy one. read more

Cannery Row - Luv the view - Shopping Centers Near Me - Monterey, California

Yup, total tourist trap. The shops are repetitive, the parking atrocious... ... and I love it. I love the salt water taffy shops, the seashell tchotchkes, the t-shirts with silly slogans. Perhaps it's nostalgia that keeps me coming back? (I came here quite a bit as a kid.) I rarely spend money in any stores, but still love looking, perusing, meandering... loitering, really. (huh.) Do yourself a favor and don't drive! Parking stinks. Hopefully your hotel is close enough that you can just walk on down. Verdict: You should totally GO, at least once. Decide for yourself if the charm wins out over touristy consumerism. It's part of the Monterey experience! read more

A reminder of Monterey's once-bustling canning economy, Cannery Row is now one of the city's top tourist attractions. Sure, the shops are definitely geared toward tourists, but the area is still a lovely area to walk through to see the formerly industrial side of Monterey Bay! Besides, this is where the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium is, which is a must-go, so you may as well check this place out anyway. That being said, if you are not planning to go the aquarium and are short on time, you aren't missing out much if you miss Cannery Row over Fisherman's Wharf or 17-Mile Drive, so I would not list this as a must-go area. Food is better and cheaper in other parts of the city so you shouldn't come here just to eat either. Bottom line: Check out Cannery Row only if you are planning to go to the Aquarium. Otherwise, there are better places to see. Parking: Street parking is metered and can be expensive. The cheapest solution is the Cannery Row Garage which has cheap weekday all-day rate. read more

July 22-24 2011. Rode in for race weekend at Laguna Seca. Cannery Row was what it always is at this time of year - PACKED. I rode into Monterey quite early. Left Orange County at 4am and arrived at the track by 8:33am. (You do the math.) Friday afternoon is quiet and good for strolling and enjoying some peace and quiet on Cannery. Food choices are mind boggling and shopping is shopping. I really dislike shopping so I don't have much input on the shops available other than there are a lot. It's a tourist area so be prepared for crowds and high prices. If you come here and complain about the food being over-priced, shut up. It's Cannery Row. Deal with it. Thanks for a great time and a big credit to Bullwacker's restaurant for serving up most of my meals. See you next year. read more

Funny to think this was once considered a stinky armpit of a spot here on the lovely California coast. Now it's a place where people come to spend a ton of money so they can look at where the old sardine factories were, eat at Johnny Rockets, and pretend they are seeing things through the eyes of Steinbeck. Now, I admit, I like the street and the old buildings and the salty sea they hover over. I'm a coastal girl, though, and this sort of thing makes me feel relaxed. This part of the ocean feels a little wild and it's nice to zone out staring at the waves. I like the closeness of the buildings and bridges that connect them. Some of the shops have neat little artsy things that catch my eye. What I don't like are the boring tourist shops (much like every other tourist shop in America only with a different city name across the sweatshirts and shot glasses), the kajillion dollar parking, and getting hit up for change by the Hare Krishnas. Well, OK, the Krishnas are now sweet new age mom types rather than dudes in monk-style robes and I suppose back in the old days it would just be bums hitting me up for change anyway. read more

It's a nice place to hangout after a long day at the Aquarium. Grab a bite to eat, check out the mini beach, and get some salt water taffy. Park at the parking structure and don't waste time with meters. The first hour at the parking structure is free. Yay! Although if you're looking for clam chowder you should really had over to the Fisherman's wharf. Chowder samples galore and cheaper too! It's too expensive to eat here. read more

As we were walking from the wharf, we passed by the Monterey Plaza Hotel. There was a wedding happening and it looked extravagant. He said something along the lines of attending the wedding for the food and for me to steal ideas (haha) but of course that went through my head because even though the wedding looked kind of awesome (I'm sure price wasn't an issue w/ this wedding), I didn't care about my surroundings because I was walking alongside him... We passed by boutique clothing stores, arts and crafts type of stores (something for his Mom so I keep a look out for such), eateries, and of course decadent dessert types of places... we stopped in a shopping strip where I found myself at For Garlic's Lovers whilst he and the boy waited for me but little did I know that he got another penny smasher thingy.. *we collect them, yes* Touristy or not, over-priced or not, I can't fathom my wonderful experience here. read more

2.5 stars really...After spending the day at the aquarium, tourists pour on to the street and Cannery Row at 5. It's a whole lot of junky stores, poor quality Monterey shirts and mediocre food. It has potential as an area and it would be great to see some more interesting shops or galleries, but the Cannery just disappoints. After a wonderful day at the aquarium we decided to wander around a bit. However, it was kind of just a buzzkill-cheesy and sad and lame all at once. Skip it if you're in Monterey and instead spend some extra time at the beautiful parks and beaches of Monterey County. read more

Cannery Row has some interesting and important history to it but this is one of those rare instances when it is better experienced in the history books and not in person. Yes, the Aquarium is here and that is a great place. Otherwise, it is almost all touristy-stores selling t-shirts, fudge and other junk, including sea shells which I regret were taken from the sea. Sorry, other than the Aquarium, and the great views, there is really no reason to come here unless you really like cheesy souvenir shops. Cannery Row and Monterey deserve better. read more

With so many people trashing this place because it's a tourist trap I'm going to come up with something positive. Three Positive Things about Cannery Row. 1 - Paradiso for Lunch ( make sure you get the free calamari coupon from the guy in front of the restaurant). 2 - Ghirardelli ( free samples and brown umbrellas when it's raining outside). They were giving out Pumpkin spike caramel squares this past weekend. Wow! 3 - Portolo, the self-service cafe within the Monterey Bay Aquarium. If you have the audacity to say this place sucks, you've obviously never dined at SeaWorld. read more

Everytime we visit Monterey, we always like to take a walk down Cannery Row and stop by the fountains, statues, and places that overlook the small little beach. We came and spent the day here and recommend taking the path that leads all the way to Old Fisherman's Wharf. Minus two stars because the streets could be a bit cleaner (some areas there were SO MUCH bird feces splattered all over the sidewalk) and wider and the entire place has more potential. Parking is a pain as well if you only plan to eat at the local Bubba Gump or stay there for a few hours. We ended up paying a $28 all-day parking fee and spent a few hours at the Row and Wharf. read more

Cannery Row is filled with souvenir shops for the tourists, references to John Steinbeck's book of the same name and a couple of dive gear shops. There is history here and remnants of the past as proof. Events are scheduled here often but the best time to come and avoid all of the tourist is in the morning during the week. The views are beautiful and it's a must see. read more

Yes, indeed, Cannery Row is the tourist trap extraordinaire of the Central California Coast. Sure there are other notable destinations in the region that readily spring to mind, but none of those other places can quite pull in the same magnitude of unrepentant tourist hordes on a nice weather weekend day. & yet I usually end up on Cannery Row myself whenever I visit Monterey. Well, I must confess, I am an unabashed tourist too. I like being able to enjoy the ocean & beaches of the Central California Coast near "civilization" where I can also get a few drinks or something to eat or some kitschy trinkets. Cannery Row is just that with some history thrown in. A stroll along Cannery Row includes beautiful ocean views, easy beach access & plenty of bars, restaurants & gift shops. Also, if you pay attention, there are plaques & signs detailing the previous incarnation of Cannery Row as a sardine fishing industrial complex. Yes, indeed, much of the Cannery Row experience is cheesy. But, just like how that mystery Velveeta/ Cheez Whiz spread on nachos is sometimes what hits the spot, Cannery Row is a good cheesy. & so, on a nice weather weekend day, I may be 1 more member of the unrepentant tourist hordes that descend upon Cannery Row. read more

Cannery Row just screams tourist traps. Aside from the Aquarium there are really nothing worth checking out. Just bunch of mediocre restaurants and tacky shops with flashing display trying to lure tourists in. Do not be tempted! At least walk a few blocks away from here to find better places to eat if you must stay in the area. I would much rather spend my money in Camel-by-the-sea. It was our first visit to Monterey. We were told to visit Cannery Row. It is a tourist destination full of restaurants, shopping, hotels and sights. Since it is a popular tourist stop, the prices do reflect this. I'm always a sucker for stopping into random shops when on vacation so this place was right up my alley. The area was made famous by John Stienbeck in his novels, but what it truly is today is simply a shopping district about a mile from the Fisherman's Wharf, and just down the street from the Aquarium. There are a myriad of distinct little shops, more than one chain restaurant, lots of sweeping views of the Pacific ocean and of course, lots and lots of people. There are derelict buildings, there are comorants that dive into the water trying to scoop up today's dinner and there are very few public bathrooms, the one I did find was in a small three story building, it had one stall, and was previously a men's room, and the urinal had been covered over. I was not impressed. Parking is a fun challenge, there are plenty of parking lots if you want to walk, there are covered garages if you want to pay $10. Free parking is limited if any at all. read more

One of the most adorable, picturesque areas in this country I've ever seen. It's not very big, in fact you can walk down the street in a matter of a couple minutes, but it is such a nice place to casually walk around and enjoy the scenery. There aren't too many chain stores or restaurants here and that makes me happy. Lots of little stores to window shop or poke your head in for a couple minutes. Seafood restaurants abound (be prepared if you are vegetarian). We were here in January and things seem to shut down pretty early, so expect to sit outside and listen to the ocean or maybe get to your hotel and go to bed early for a change. You definitely don't want to miss the sunrise over Monterey, so set your alarm and get up early. We got in late in the afternoon and left early the next morning, which was definitely not enough time to enjoy the place. Try to spend at least an entire day and night enjoying the area and stopping at the aquarium. There is street parking and several garages available. Note: I'm not a shopper so I'm not rating Cannery Row on the quality of stores. I'm also not rating it on the quality of the restaurants. Yes, there are a lot of souvenir stores. No, there are not a lot of places to go to for dinner. This is more about the overall look of the area and the beautiful views of the bay. Also, I am bumping it up a star because I think the overall 3-star rating is low. Otherwise, I'd go with a solid 4-stars. It could be improved if it were a little bigger and if they filled up the empty store fronts. read more

I love this area! It's bustling and fun. I've visited a number of times but want to come again to dive deeper into the shops and try out all of the fun activities they have there. The aquarium's there as well as a mirror maze, mini golf, and many other fun family activities. There's often live music, lots of shopping, great restaurants, surrey bikes you can rent (at a premium), beautiful views of the ocean and sand, and much more. I even saw a puppeteer use his puppet to talk to random passerbys from his apartment window. I love the vegetation around the area and the cool John Steinbeck and and Sardine Company history. It can indeed be touristy but who said touristy places can't be delicious, beautiful or fun? It's no longer a cannery so you wont be smelling sardines during your beach stroll but the sardine signs are still up and it's still pretty cool to think about. Like most kids from the area, I was required to read a handful of John Steinbeck books in high school so it was surreal to envision everything from the book while smelling the fresh ocean air on Ocean View Avenue. read more
