Cannery Row as immortalized in the book by the same name by John Steinbeck is quite different from the area a half century ago. The name is the same but what was once a seashore lined with canneries is now a big tourist trap. Luckily, the buildings have been preserved or rebuilt in the old canning tradition and tourist traps are more fun and smell better than sardine canneries. The row is lined with restaurants, hotels, gift shops and ends with the Monterrey Aquarium. There are many restaurants with beautiful views of the water. There are stores with any novelty imaginable. There are quaint little boutiques and shops all along the row. There are even some more touristy places like a palm reader and a mirror maze. Parking is expensive and can be hard to find. The place is also busy, especially with little children running around. The area is adorned with factual information about John Steinbeck, his book and the cast of characters portrayed in it. The real charm of Cannery Row is the preservation of the canneries and a willingness to preserve the architecture for generations to enjoy. read more

It's always nice to walk around and explore Cannery Row. It is very rustic and has a variety of shops and restaurants to check out besides the aquarium. The view of the ocean is also breath taking. Definitely take some time out of your visit to look around. It can be quite crowded on weekends so be prepared. read more

Mostly stores but some of them are very interesting in a quirky sort of way. And, the street leads directly to the Aquarium at the end of it. Some nice views too. Restaurants, etc. While it is not the most compelling of places to go, if you are in beautiful Monterey, you should definitely take a stroll down Cannery Way. read more

Typical tourist trap of expensive restaurants, scenic views, little street parking, and local shops. I do appreciate how family oriented the street is, how shops seem to stay open past 9, and how there's still plenty of garage parking available. I've come here a few times this weekend to eat and walk around and it's still enjoyable read more

Really not much to see here. Lots of touristy shops and restaurants. However, there is a decent view of the Monterey Bay in the open area overlooking the beach, so that's worth checking out for a couple minutes. read more

I think this place is adorable, with plenty of history in its name. It won't be as big as SF's Fisherman's Wharf or Embarcadero, which I think a lot of people would compare it to. There's plenty of small shops for souvenirs, good places to eat, lots of candy shops, and, of course, the Monterey Aquarium. Overall, a good place to stroll. This is a tourist attraction, so you will deal with foreigners and people all over the country. If you need to park somewhere, we found plenty of parking in the parking lots a couple of blocks away from the action. No need to park too close when/if you need the exercise. The bf and I will probably be back, but probably not for a couple of years. There is a time when you've sort of seen it all, and you just see small variations between the wharfs. read more

It's touristy but you have to do it. The history is more interesting than the tourist shops nearby but there are several cool restaurants, bars, and the aquarium nearby. Bring a jacket because it is often cool, overcast and breezy. Seafood a few blocks off the main drag is excellent and better priced. read more

It was great t grow up here back then. Had odyssee records next door , 812 theater a cpl doors down the other way. next to doc Ricketts lab.Used to run around all over those canneries. Down the street to the beach climbing down big boulders to get to it. Now there's a stairway with rails. Just wrong. lol. Then the aquarium came, The deal was no shops inside, cause the merchants didn't want to lose the business. Well it got built. it was my best fishing hole. then the shops came. some businesses did lose money and customers to it. But being up there this summer with my daughter. I just had to look around and smile. My dad, the other merchants, the Cannery Row commission envisioned a world renowned tourist spot. Well the seeds they planted way back then, Grew and bloomed into what it is today. That's why i had to smile, cause i new up there they all were smiling to. Awesome spot to go read more

I thought this place was alright. the weather here is perfect in the summer. There are lots of things to do and see. Yes it's overpriced here but it's mainly a tourist place what do you expect? The road toward the aquarium is dirty but going the opposite the direction it actually is pretty nice. If you love the fresh air, nice music, and being near the ocean, it can be a very nice place. They got some great seafoods restaurants along the stretch. Lots of wine tasting. lots of music. i love watching the sunset over the water check out some pictures I included of this place read more

Always a good time at cannery Row. I've been coming here since I was a child and I am constantly bringing people here that come out of town. It's only an hour 15 mins drive from San Jose and it offers a Little day get away. I even though it is only a short strip, you can spend all day looking at the little Knick knacks. All restaurants are phenomenal and most offer ocean views. The restaurants even off clam chowder samples outside. read more

I've visited Cannery Row a number of times and I usually stay at the rather unique Holiday Inn topside, so I've walked the entire length of this street more than a few times. There are some nice little shops and restaurants scattered throughout this historic district and I've found new and interesting things each time I've visited the area. Although the last cannery closed in 1973 the area remains a nostalgic reminder of how life once was on cannery row with the old building along the water's edge filled with shops still playing up the life where many of the cannery workers spent their entire lives although most are places for the sea birds to perch and the mammals to sloth now. I find the central coast of California to be amongst my favorite places to visit when on the west coast I find the hustle to be less strenuous and the bustle to me quite charming. read more

A great family destination is Monterey Peninsula's most visited neighborhood, the historic Cannery Row. Of Course, you know about the aquarium on the 800 block and it's incredible educational exhibits but what most folks don't know is the secret history of the 'row' in plain view: the 600 to 400 blocks. The famous tree where the drunks slept and the last of the metal water towers where folks lived all told about in Steinbeck's novels Sweet Thursday and Cannery Row. Also the exact spot where Doc Ricketts, Steinbeck's best friend and subject of his writing (Sea of Cortez) was killed by a train, immortalized by his bust. Got antsy kids of different ages? There are surreys/bikes and kayaks one can rent on the 300 block at Adventures by then Sea. You and yours can peddle (or fake peddle if you are in the back on the surrey) along the recreation trail south to Pacific Grove's Lover's Point beach. There is a great beach grill there which has, hands down the best clam chowder on the Peninsula. It sells out fast though. Also a newly opened bakery/deli spot there as well. It's about a mile south. Perfect for little kids who can suddenly tire. It will be the most scenic surrey ride you'll take. Send the sullen teenagers out on the bay in kayaks from the same rental spot and meet back up later. Grandparents with you? Drop them off at Cannery Row Antique Mall on the 400 block. The largest antique mall on the Central Coast. They'll be entertained for 3 hours minimum. There is a lounge upstairs where they can chill with complimentary drinks or better yet the wine bar next door, Pierce Ranch Vineyards. If it's 5PM and you and your family are getting hungry I highly recommend Hula's, a great family restaurant with the all important full bar, just up a few blocks on Lighthouse Ave. Hawaiian American food. They have an excellent happy hour until 6PM. Their $6 cocktails are yumyum. My favorites are blood orange Martini and the Pink Bikini. They have a great selection of happy hour appetizers but my default meal is the blackened fish dinner special. You get to pick your fish from three Hawaiian selections and it comes with the most comforting wasabi sauce over mashed potatoes with a great arugula salad. read more

Everything is so overpriced! I enjoyed the breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean, but everything else was touristy to me. To be honest, I expected Cannery Row to be bigger. It reminded me of walking down Hollywood Blvd. because almost every shop had all kinds of tourist junk and "I survived Highway 1" crap. I was very surprised though, the tourists here are fairly nicer than the ones at the Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. These tourists mind their business and they aren't rude. But then again, it wasn't too busy while we were there. They had lots of John Steinbeck references and they also had a lot of candy shops. We parked in a lot for $10/day. A little piece of advice, if you know you aren't going to stay here for so long, I suggest parking in the residential area and put coins in the meter. It's cheaper. If I were to choose Santa Cruz or Monterey for the beach though, I would go with Monterey. The sand is much different, too! read more

Cannery Row is basically the not-as-flashy, smaller sister to Fisherman's Wharf here in the city. It has all the bells and whistles but it's just not as shiny in comparison. We stayed at The Clement while in Monterey, and it's right on Cannery Row, which was ideal for us. There are tons of restaurants and touristy things to do but the only attraction for us, aside from food, was the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The aquarium is a must-see if it's your first time visiting Monterey and it's not only great for families but also for adults. It's definitely not as crowded as going to the wharf in the city, but it does attract tons of families. Cannery Row is a smaller area so it's easy to walk around and there are tons of food options, shops and beautiful views. If you are looking to get away for the weekend, Monterey is a great option but, aside from food and the aquarium, Cannery Row doesn't have much else. read more

Cannery Row is a tourist trap! It features plenty of restaurants, shops, hotels, and an amazing seafront view. I haven't been to Monterey in years and all I can say is that it use to be less crowded. I mean you've got arm room to move around. Parking can get tough and parking in the garage isn't so cheap either. It might be best to park far and take the cable car down to the Row. One nice thing about the row is that it connects to a tiny bay wheee you can find shells, crabs, and people hopping from rock to rock. All in all, this place is great for seafood enthusiasts, tourists, dates, and for those who would like to visit the aquarium. read more

This is for a local art store located ON canary row that ruined my entire experience. I had one of the worst experience I have ever encountered as a customer. The woman, Cheryl who is a potter was working at the store not sure if she's an owner or what. My BF had to use the restroom and I'm a huge local art fan and when I saw the sign I figured he could use the restroom there and I could take a quick look around and maybe get some new art! I was super excited. I also love when I meet the artist and hear their story behind the piece and it means so much more to me. It's a huge hobby of mine and I've been collecting local art from around the world since I was a young. I was a tourist in the town and ready to purchase. When I went in I didn't particularly see anything that stood out to me. The woman working there was kind of grumpy and weird but I still kept looking. I decided to ask her if she had any art for sale and she didn't and I asked to see a picture of her art, being friendly and making conversation. She told me she wasn't a painter- but a potter. I saw her pieces and they were hand painted and I complimented her letting her know I liked her painting, even though she's first a potter. I'm not sure why this comment bothered her so much but she rolled her eyes and got up and walked away. I brushed it off I figured she was maybe having a bad day or something. She then asked me where "that guy" went. I said "Oh! He's in the restroom." And she became almost scary angry. She started yelling saying ,"THATS NOT A PUBLIC RESTROOM, DO YOU NOT KNOW HOW TO ASK? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" Literally psycho. I said, "oh I'm so sorry we had no idea" the bathroom was wide open and there was a curtain which was also open. I figured it was public. There was also no signage. Even though we made a mistake and didn't realize the restroom wasn't public and clearly let her know it was accidental, for her to continue to behave this way was actually shocking. My jaw dropped. She walked over to me and aggressively grabbed the pictures of her art out of my hand and said "gimme that," and snatched them. I have never witnessed an adult throw such a temper tantrum like this, let alone to a customer. I was actually flabbergasted and a little scared as she grew so crazy so quickly. We then left the store after she told us to get out and passive aggressively pointed out the actual public restrooms. Which clearly if we knew we would have used. We genuinely thought this restroom was public and when a door is wide open with no signs in a store I didn't know we needed to ask. I don't know how she retains customers- complete wacko nut job Here's a tip to anyone who passes by as a customer- DO NOT ENTER. The woman was completely dreadful. The little store may seem cute and charming on the outside and some of the art is nice but it's not worth it. If I could give this place zero stars I would. I would question having my art here if I were an artist as well, even if I decided to get something or wanted an art piece from here I didn't get it nor would I ever step foot back in there. As an artist I would think twice before having this woman represent you. You may end up losing customers being associated with someone like this. read more

Cannery Row - The witch resides in here- BEWARE - Shopping Centers Near Me - Monterey, California

If you are looking to get a sense of Steinbeck's Cannery Row you are in the wrong place. If you simply want a nice day out to do some shopping, eat some seafood, and visit the aquarium, it's a nice (albeit very crowded and touristy) experience. I'd say it's slightly less touristy than Pier 39 in San Francisco (that's obviously not saying much). TIP: If you are travelling with kids make sure to pick up the "Historic Cannery Row Walking Tour" brochure which includes a scavenger hunt for old canning labels. Even if your children aren't yet old enough to read, they will have fun matching up the pictures and letters in the brochure to the labels hidden on the sidewalk. read more

There's nothing WRONG with Cannery Row... but unless I missed a history museum or something, nobody should go there expecting to experience the history of the place. The gem would be the Monterey Aquarium, and I appreciate the free trolley running through, but Cannery Row itself isn't too remarkable without that connection. In other words, I'd get more enjoyment from looking at a book of old pictures than coming down to what is a painted over historical landmark full of shops, as it is no longer, as Steinbeck put it, "a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream." Maybe just a stink. read more

I give the average yelper a lot of credit for being savvy - not one to fall for patently obvious tourist traps etc. Given that, I give Cannery Row 4 stars. There's still a lot of history here (though more is being culled all the time, that can only mean that its star rating will fall into the future). The Aquarium is inside the old Hovden Cannery, and it contains some interesting info on the history of the row - next to it is Ed Rickett's lab, another piece of history that is open to the public occasionally (typically during the Steinbeck festival). Further down the row is the Monterey Canning Company building - an old cannery building turned over to tourist trap shops and a Starbucks, but you don't have to look too hard to see the history in this building in its beams and row crossing. The next section of the row is tourist central, but look carefully and you'll see the ruins of cannery buildings on the beach side of the row and a historic apartment building on the land side. Then you run into a run down section - cannery ruins on the ocean side and a parking lot and more ruins on the land side. After the kink (and the Monterey Plaza), you're down to the second (and final) original cannery building and bridge (Aeneas), followed by some re-purposed cannery buildings and a beach that has cannery ruins and foundations still rising out of the sand. A block above all this, the recreational trail follows the path of the cannery era railroad tracks, and still has some original buildings, rendering tanks etc. either side of it. Monterey itself is a very historical place, being the first capital of CA back in the Spanish days, so the history of Cannery Row is relatively modern, even by American/Monterey standards. Even so, there's enough old baggage lining the row to give this place a historical appeal, at least until they redevelop the crap out of it. Just stay out of the tourist shops and appreciate everything else! read more

I love this row because it leads you to my favorite place - the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I have so many fond memories here: strolling down the street while getting to know Cal; taking my nephews and nieces souvenir shopping; chowing on clam chowder in bread bowls while listening to fun music; watching the waves and taking in the cool ocean breeze. I know it's touristy, but it's touristy for valid reasons. You have to experience it once in your life. Who knows...you may create fond memories, too. read more

A facade. Like a plastic surgery patient that still has bruises, but can't help admiring herself in the mirror, Cannery Row is a front for an old fishing town trying to revitalize. Since I like analogies, here's another one: a sardine that crawled into a can chrysalis, only to emerge a mermaid. Now, vain and narcissistic, she refuses to see her scarred sardine tail and fins, forcing you to look only at her beautiful, plastic face. She's just sitting pretty on a rock by the ocean, waiting to gobble up tourists. The new buildings and the renovated structures are pretty, touristy, and historic (in a Historical Barbie sort of way). But, you have to prevent yourself from looking too closely to keep the magic going. A sharp look shows you what's really there: empty shops, rickety stores, and places left unfinished. Those spaces have a ghost town atmosphere, or like a zombie film waiting to happen. If you're a tourist, prepare to pay for that renovation and revitalization. Prices here are steep. One night in this illustrious street filled illusion will cost you around $400, regardless of whether there's an event going on. Parking is steep as well (and for blocks surrounding it), and it changed this year to be ~2hr parking enforced EVERYDAY. Not only that, enforcement starts at 11am on weekdays, but 9am on weekends. Do they know they have tourists? They sure do, and they've already drawn up plans to milk them for all they're worth. So, if you're into tourist traps, that's on you. But, I'm sure there are better places in Monterey to go. read more

I used to love Cannery Row, back in the days where every store made it's own clam chowder and offered samples on the sidewalk. I used to love having lunch just by walking from end to end and filling up on chowder shots. Cannery Row, however, has lost the appeal that it had even 10 years ago and has become just another wharf for tourists. The shopping center is filled with kitschy shops that offer nothing unique to Monterey. Instead of restaurants, there are lazer tag and indoor mini golf spots. Yes, there is the spectacular aquarium, but it's really the only good thing about Cannery Row. The rest of it feels like a bad "Fun House" at the circus. read more

It's one of the top tourist attractions while visiting Monterey. 1 mile away from Fisherman's Wharf, this place is swarming with people and cars in the late afternoon! We got so frustrated not being able to find parking, we left. We came back the next morning super early (7am) and it was much more enjoyable without the crowds. Metered Parking is free until 9am. After 9am, it's $1.50 per hour with a 2 hr limit. There was a parking structure but we did not go there, but definitely an option if you plan to spend a long time here. The Aquarium is located in Cannery Row. A good breakfast spot is First Awakenings, which Rachel Ray featured on her show $10/day. read more

John Steinbeck would not have written fondly of the modern Cannery Row. This place makes me sad, it is a shinning example of how destructive modernization can be. Anyone who has read Steinbeck's classic "Cannery Row" is filled of fond images of these streets. The charm of yesteryear has long since past, with tacky tourist spots sprouting like weeds in its place. Two stars only for the historical significance of the location. The modern version of what stands here doesn't deserve a single star. read more

I love visiting Cannery Row...thinking of it makes me nostalgic because I used to come often with my family as we had a timeshare in Pacific Grove when I was growing up. Then later I ended up going to college in Monterey so Cannery Row was a common place to go for dinner or just to hang out with friends. There are tons of great restaurants and fun little shops along the row. Also, you can get a few samples of clam chowder (not as many samples as at Fisherman's Wharf) and there are tons of beautiful places to stop and look out at the ocean. There's sometimes a live band that plays right down where you can access the beach (across from Starbucks). And be sure to go grab a delicious sundae from Ghirardelli's! If you are able to see all of the charm that Cannery Row has to offer, I'd recommend researching the history a bit so that you may see it in a new light on your next trip back! Also, I recommend coming by in the early morning when all of the restaurants are just opening up, the shops are still closed, and there's no one out and about. It's a serene area to take a nice walk and listen to the waves and seagulls. Enjoy :] read more

Monterey's Cannery Row has gone down the TOILET. It is all about the almighty DOLLAR. The shops and stores are now nothing about imported crap of flea market quality. T-shirts so thin, they make rice paper look like a canvas tarp. The selection and quality of restaurants has become terrible and the portions microscopic. Cannery Row used to be full of unique shops and handcrafted works of art. Now it is nothing but OVER PRICED ice cream, candy, sandwich and coffee shops and stores pawning imported touristy schitz. The City of Monterey is entirely to blame for it's decline. The upscale clothing and fashion stores, jewelry shops, art galleries and antique stores are gone. Top that off with METER MAIDS that are so ruthless that they would cite their own mothers, eat their young and tow a disabled Veteran's handicapped van and you have a tourist hell hole. Soon the famous aquarium will even replace it's collection of fish and mammals with plastic replicas imported from Asia. read more

I'm mixed on this one... - $1.50/hour for parking, even in the evenings? That's how much it costs to park at Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf, which is incomparably superior. And SF offers validation and you don't. You suck balls so hard for that. - Your clam chowder is fantastic but your restaurants are just okay. - Your candy stores are awesome. - I'm loving the new ice skating rink, especially when I walked by and heard Usher songs bumping. Woot! - I like the artists that sketch cartoon portraits of you - I love the all-night $3 margarita special at Isabella's, even though the margarita is mostly syrup with 1/2 a shot of Jose Cuervo Overall, you're okay. Busy, busy, BUSY! Tried to come here on a Friday night and it was a zoo. Gave up and went to downtown... but was determined to visit the ever so famous Cannery Row on Saturday after a visit to the aquarium. There are many shops littered across the area near the aquarium. Many of them are just tourist traps - which I always fall for (hey, I like playing tourist, ok?) and also some yummy places like Nestle Tollhouse & Ghiradelli nearby for your sugar fix. If you're not feeling too frugal, there are many hotels nearby - so you can be close if you're into the touristy feel of the area. Granted, you're also paying $$$ to be there. My favorite shop there was the garlic lover's store, located inside a building where they have that wax museum (which I found creepy). Garlic bbq sauce, garlic rubs, garlic spreads and MORE! Overall, touristy - but great to walk around since it's near the water. The air feels great and it's definitely something you should do once. read more

Unfortunately we were too early so most everything was closed -__- but we did stumble upon an outdoor fire (near one of the hotels) that felt heavenly since it was freezing outside.
