Not sure why there are some negative experiences list, but if you come in with an attitude it will not be tolerated and rightfully so! It is the Hamptons so the prices reflect the environment. Located in downtown Riverhead, it's steps away from the Aquarium and attached to Jerry and the Mermaid Restaurant (see my riveting review of this joint, as well! ) making it a perfect stop while hanging out downtown. Smallish but bright and airy, the bed of a vintage pickup is repurposed as the checkout counter. Very cool. An eclectic selection. You'll probably be able to find something for yourself. If not, you'll probably be able to find something for a gift. Small book nook for the kiddies, too! I'm not sure of the details but I do know they host small events now and then (author meet and greets and readings). Whenever you're out East, make sure to stop by!

Inside, curated sections of adult horror old and new, novelty books, and my favorite: ghost books (etc.) for kids! We walked out with one of my favorites, Gustavo the Shy Ghost, but I could have purchased the entire store. It's small but the employee was super nice and I'm sure everyone loves working there. The Gustavo book, hardcover and gorgeous, cost an expected 20 dollars. I'd be happy to spend all my money there, really, please stay open. This shop really adds to the already high charm of Mystic.

I discovered Burtons Bookstores on a visit to Greenport about three years ago and have been ordering all my books from Burtons ever since. Scott is always accommodating and I receive my order by mail in a few days or in week if it has to be ordered from the publisher. I wanted to buy a limited-edition publication and I did a web search for sellers. Harper's Books was one of the very few booksellers with a copy, and their price was also the most reasonable (admittedly that was probably because the few other sellers had signed copies). I e-mailed the bookstore and received a response within literally about a minute. There were several e-mails back-and-forth re: certain details - and Chris (the co-director) was exceptionally responsive, accommodating & pleasant. The photos alone make the store look lovely and the service was superb!

And when you got a dick with a bad vibe running the place, the last thing you want to do is purchase anything from him. Pity.
