When at Caneel Bay, this is where you eat lunch unless you want ice cream from the gift shop. Be prepared to pay for the convenience of food on a world class beach. Our $19 french dip with 11 onion rings was very good and tided us over until dinner. The service is outstanding and my water was never empty. They use a desalinization pump from the ocean and the water is some of the best I've had in the islands. They have two tv's running news and sports while you wait for your food. It is all outside seating under shaded cover so you won't die in the sun. It is not air conditioned though so if you are struggling with the humidity this is not the place to get away from the heat. Try the gift shop and get some ice cream! The salted caramel scoop is $6.50 and worth every calorie. The grounds are spectacular and you must spend the day enjoying honeymoon beach. read more

The Caneel Beach Bar & Grill is a nice option for light, casual fare during the day if you are staying at the resort. Definitely not a "bargain" as some other places on the island are for lunch, but chances are, if you're staying at the resort, you don't really care too much about a bargain. The staff is friendly, and they make a point (if you're a guest) to refer to you by your name, which is comforting (how did that gal know my name - I had just checked in?). The bartender we had was friendly and attentive and didn't mind so much the request for something that wasn't on the menu (but then again, how hard is Myers's and Pineapple?). The CBB&G also has beach service. Unfortunately, that is where they lose me. The two drinks we ordered from the gal on the beach were hot and they took FOR EVER to get. Food was adequate. I didn't feel too ripped off (after all, this IS a resort), except when I ordered sushi. I think I'm just spoiled by the riches of my favorite Birmingham sushi join (see: http://www.yelp.com/biz/jinsei-sushi-birmingham#hrid:vG7n6leCFicaYWNOqrlE8A). There are other options on the menu, and I mostly opted for the salads, which were creative, when dining there. Overall, a good option if you're a guest of the resort, and just want to throw on your cover up and flops and have a quick bite and a drink. Would I stop there if I were on a sailboat just to go to a beach bar and for the scenery? NO. There are way too many other options around the island. read more

I could not believe how bad it was. Have been here multiple times and it's possible we were just here on an 'off' day but from Caneel Bay I would expect more: 1. Ordered chimichurri mahi mahi tacos - wrong food came out. 2. Asked server to check if a dessert item was available - she never checked or came back to let us know. 3. Bruschetta (normally quite good) not seasoned. 4. Ordered chicken tenders for child. They were frozen/ processed. Fries served with not salted. 5. Service was THE WORST. Waitress did not check in on us even once. Was so incredibly slow even though it wasn't crowded. I live on St John so I understand 'island time' but this was beyond compare. It took 30 minutes to bring our check AFTER we told the waitress we were done (she didn't know until we'd already been done for at least 10 minutes). No smiles. Waitress seemed grumpy - like she didn't want to be at work - and it showed. Took 10 minutes after sitting down for someone to ask if we wanted menus. No Salt at table, bar staff couldn't help, server no where to be found. I had to walk over to another table to grab one. Caneel Bay is a five star resort but you wouldn't know it based on our experience here. Skip this place and head into town for better quality food and better quality service. One star. read more

May 18, 2017 - 1:15pm We visited Caneel Bay for a afternoon at the beach while on a Celebrity cruise excursion. The beach was nice and the beach staff great. Where we had trouble was the local restaurant Caneel Bay Bar. We stopped here for lunch. The service here is a total JOKE!! So we ordered lunch and when the food was completed and put on the counter, to be delivered, our server Catherine was nowhere to be found. The food sat at the counter for 15 minutes. Employees would look over at the plates but nobody would bring it to the table. Apparently it's not their job because that's the other servers job. I thought this was a high end resort??? We also watched a guy standing at the counter on his phone and over this 15 min period he would occasionally look at the food, then look over at our table then went back to his phone. WOW! When Catherine finally got around to remembering we had ordered or finished her break, she brought over the cold food. I asked her who that guy was standing at the counter on his phone and she said his name was Bevon. The restaurant had at most 12 people and only 5 tables with customers, so it was not busy. Apparently the attitude at this restaurant is if it's not your table then don't do anything. We are going to rethink coming back to this resort which we were talking about staying. If the service is this bad, forget it. There are so many other places to visit. Message to Devon. If you see food sitting out waiting to be delivered, then get off your a$$ and take it to the table. You all should be working together as a team instead of having the attitude that it's not your job. Bad experience and we won't be back. We will also let the cruise line know about our experience and suggest they find another resort to send guests. read more

I made the mistake of staying at the Westin in St. John and the food situation there is just horrible. The rest of the island (think 3rd world,other than for the beautiful beaches) isn't a big help either. So it was really nice to find this oasis of civilization on St. John with excellent food and impeccable 5 star service. read more

We enjoyed the food and view but everything was over priced. We only ate there for the convenience since we were staying there. The service was not that great but we did have a couple good servers. We ate there three times during the stay. Had the ham and cheese sandwich, personal pizzas, cheeseburger and fries, sashimi sushi and the geisha sushi roll. Pizzas and sushi roll were our favorite but we would want to pay that much again. read more

We got to this restaurant as we were recommended by fellow travelers. We wanted to order the obvious which was sushi. We got in like 5 mins to 3.00pm unfortunately this place had a lot or sushi orders and we were cut off a little short from ordering and was really disappointed. We just returned from an incredible week at Caneel Bay. Let me start by saying the grounds, beaches and staff were all amazing. I would almost give the entire vacation a 5+ except for one missing critical piece. Food NOT GOOD. Eating a decent meal proved virtually impossible. Buffet breakfast -NOT edible, and definitely not worth it. For instance, consistently stale and greasy croissants. Dinner at Sugar Mill, please do go for the view, but the meal was barely average and quite expensive (went twice just to be sure). The Grill, while convenient, also just plain lacking. No sense of ambiance. The room is extremely bright in the evening, good for hungry gnats, not so good for hungry humans. Oh, and while there are no phones or TVs in rooms, the Grill has 24 hr sports on large screen. Did I say it was bright? Again, loved the grounds, wonderful tennis & salon facilities, outdoor massage cabanas, great, patient scuba instruction, rooms cleaned twice a day and extremely safe environment. I come to Caneel Bay every year to spend the day at the beach and lunch at the grille. The food is usually very good and service fairly ok but this year (actually am sitting at the restaurant as I type this) was horrible. My chicken sandwich was decent (altho they should have used a bun or brioche or focciccia as the rye bread became mushy quickly) but my mom's shrimp and chix linguini was horrible - completely dry and tasteless and overpriced ($32!!!). She had a couple bites and even added hot sauce but to no avail - so we sent it back. Don't get this dish. Also the service is horrible - the host gave us this dirty look as we entered - maybe bc we were not staying there as guests (we have a timeshare at the Westin) - and had a blah look on her face the entire time. Also there were no refills on the water or coffee... The servers are also not very cordial and have a bit of an attitude - it's like they hate their job. Came to Caneel just for lunch (and to see the resort), since we were staying elsewhere. Onion rings were AMAZING. Tropical drink (the BBC?) was delicious. Salad was good. Turkey BLT sandwich was not great -- the turkey was quite dry. Highly recommended just to sit on a beautiful patio and eat onion rings! read more

Four of us dined there this evening. 3 of us had sushi and was just ok. We have had far better. We also asked for no seeds and we got seeds. Rolls were huge, but all rice. Rice did not seem fresh. The 4th diner ordered a steak whick came after the sushi diners were nearly done. Potatoes were cold. Banana cream pie came out frozen and was awful. All this for over 300 dollars. read more
