We got a blueberry pop tart, and some raspberry scones, along with a chocolate covered vanilla cupcake. Yummy! The only problem is that Henry's is not just a dessert bakery - the store may appear tiny on the outside, but it's huge on the inside. In addition to the bakery, they got all kinds of candy and other goodies for sale. I gotta stop back in another day and try all the other good stuff inside. Plus, you can tell from the Rick Astley-inspired sign outside, Henry's has a great sense of humor. This is exactly what small business brings to the neighborhood. Stop by and visit Henry's Sweet Retreat - you'll be glad you did!

The small sundaes were huge! Kids could not finish them and at $7ish each hard to beat for the quality! I had an eggnog cupcake. I was not sure it would be good but whatever magic y'all put in it worked great together! The frosting was light and fluffy not too sweet not too bland. And the cake was moist, not crumbly, not heavy just perfect! Had a latte with soymilk because my belly does not care for milk in coffee. Local coffee company supplies the beans. They also have pretty much any kind of candy, pies, and sweets you might need and apparently they cater! Stop in you will not regret it...unless you do not like sweets and then I am sorry.

After entering, we received a warm welcome and began perusing the candies and treats. They were organized by time period and some interesting information was posted nearby and/or on the individual item. There were also gift sets. Some of the items were quite dusty and seemed as if they had been there for some time. A lot of the items were things that can be purchased in Cracker Barrel or in other old-timey candy stores elsewhere. They offer modern candy as well, but overall, I was underwhelmed. I was quite surprised to see historic candies so full of artificial dyes. That was an eye opener. I was kind of surprised at the signage throughout the store. The signs seemed basic when considered all the endorsements that the store has. Maybe the signs were made to look less modern. I didn't end up purchasing anything but was glad to visit.

The candy of old. Part museum and part sweet shop, they have displays showing the candies through the ages, from native American hickory bark to 1900 toys and food items behind glass. It was tough to limit our purchase as we saw so many "must have" items. In the end, we got our bill down to under $30 and just got four different things including some chocolate covered almonds for me (vacation food!) and both ginger and licorice for Mrs. K. Note that True Treats Candy is not handicapped accessible. The entrance is a somewhat steep set of stairs. They might have a rear entrance, probably just ask. The main concern we have is with the STAFF, all 3 of them. As I walked in (delicious smell btw), I immediately commented on the pralines he was making and said "hi, those look delicious". He looked at me, no smile and said nothing so I repeated myself. Again, nothing but a mean look on his face so I moved on. The other two weren't friendly either but at least I got the one serving me the apple to comment on her favorite flavor with some nudging. She had the longer hair. We faired no better with the one serving the ice cream. We gave up at that point on trying to ask questions or make polite conversation. Customer service is VERY important and can make or break a business.

The chocolate cone didn't taste that fresh... but it was still good. My friends didn't really like their strictly strawberry, strawberry cheesecake, or coffee flavors that much though. The worker did make a remark in front of all the customers saying they need to stop working here during the summer and seemed stressed. I mean what do you expect for an ice cream store in a busy area on a hot day... that comment should've definitely been saved for private coworker talk. My other friends rate this place 3 stars.

That, combined with the fact that candy stores seem to be having a moment, put me in a position to check this place out. So before we headed out to the train station, we made a quick stop here. IT'SUGAR is a chain/franchise, with multiple locations across the country. In my perspective, this store is large with a good selection. They have packaged brands that we all know, plus the option to buy in bulk or in takeaway packages. I saw most of the usual suspects, as well as brands I didn't recognize as well as a large selection of Swedish candy which is currently trending. You can by bulk candy either by weight or volume; I decided to go the latter and choose one of their containers that can be filled as much as possible as long as the lid closed. I mostly stuck to the fruity and chewy candies which were quite good. It wasn't busy at all when we were there, so checkout was super fast. Overall, I was impressed with IT'SUGAR - really good variety and a place I would seek out for some sweets.

For three kids and my little bit of Swedish fish, I spent $62, which is a bit much for candy in my opinion. But hey, it was spring break, and they had a great time, so I let it slide. The associate working there was very patient with the kids,--it was a lot going on with all that excitement and sugar overload! I didn't grab any pictures, but overall it was a fun stop and a great treat for the kids. Rating: 4/5
