Coons Candy - First Visit…read more Let's go ahead and name what some of us have probably thought: pulling up to a place called Coons Candy comes with hesitation -- especially as a Black customer. It's an unspoken (and sometimes spoken) moment of pause, wondering what kind of experience you're walking into. But curiosity -- and a soft spot for old-school sweets -- led us to check it out. To my surprise, the staff couldn't have been more welcoming. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with friendly smiles and offered samples of fudge, toffee, and a few other homemade treats. That immediately softened the moment and brought on a bit of nostalgia -- felt like walking into one of those general stores my MawMaw would take me to, or a Cracker Barrel stop on a road trip. The store itself is exactly what you'd expect from a small-town candy shop: shelves packed with retro candies, novelty drinks, locally made honey and syrups, quirky gifts, and yes -- edible bugs. It's cozy and cluttered in a fun, old-school way. We left with: * Boba Vida popping pearls (dark cherry) * Sugar Daddy, Victory sticks, Stallion candy smokes, raspberry & green apple sticks * Locally made honey * A mix of glass-bottle sodas: * Sioux City Ginger Beer + Prickly Pear * Reading Draft Honey Cream * Drive-In Cherry Limeade * Nehi Peach * Ginger Strawberry tea * Hot & Spicy Ginger Beer This is definitely a place for folks who love that nostalgic candy-store vibe and don't mind digging through shelves of old favorites and funky surprises. ‍ Final take: It was a mixed bag. The selection was fun and the staff made us feel welcome. But the name? It sticks -- and not in a sweet way. That hesitation doesn't go away entirely, and I'd understand if someone else passed on the visit for that reason alone. I'm glad I saw it for myself. Would I go back? Maybe. Would I recommend it? Depends who's asking.

And pop. Ended up with some candy and ice cream. I got the Lake Erie Cookie Monster, which had chunks of cookie dough, etc., in it and was tinted blue. Fun and refreshing. Kid K liked her vanilla. Service was great. Prices are fair. The place is cool. Free city parking across the street. Great location: It's located on W Water Street, just WSW of Columbus avenue...it's right in heart of (resurgent) downtown Sandusky. 2. Sweets: They have a very nice selection of olde tyme candy. You'll find the likes of Abba-Zabba, Goo Goo Cluster, Chick-o-Sticks, wax mustaches/lips/fangs, etc. Obviously, they have newer brands, as well. 3. Drinks: They have a superior selection of "craft" pop, including diet Dang, the best diet pop in the world. Also, I saw Ale 8, Moxie, Cheerwine, about 75 varieties of Root beer, and a bunch more pop. 4. They have ice cream floats (can't vouch for these...yet). ...best of all... 5. The back room: It's part pop culture museum (from the 50s to the 2000s) and part flea market. Need a poster of Wonder Woman (either Lynda or Gal), John Wayne, Arnold, or Magic Johnson? Get it here. Desire to posses the Gorf cartridge or Activision Football cartridge for your Atari 2600? You're covered. Want that Fat Albert board game that you've been missing since 1973? You're in luck. There are TONS of things to check out and, if you choose, to buy. I bought a couple of books that I had as a kid and haven't seen since the 80s...("The Encyclopedia of Hostile Aliens," and "Earth's Greatest Interstellar Battles"). 6. Video Games: This is especially cool...in the back room, you'll find a MultiGame machine that's in great condition. 55 games...1 quarter per play. Come in on Friday and you'll find that it's set on "free play." Yep. I don't know about you, but the next time I'm in Sandusky, with or without the kids, drunk or sober, naked or fully clothed, I'm stopping at Soda Pop's, and ain't nobody stoppin' me! FIVE STARS!

My childhood favorites were there: NECCO Wafers, the little bottles with juices. Candy cigarettes (hehe). We finished the foray into sweet memories by sharing a root beer float in the attached soda shop. Our faces beamed with happiness the entire time! I brought my three youngest God…read moresons here on a walk once (the middle one tricked me) and they were absolutely overwhelmed by the options. A kid in a candy store is overwhelmed and then over-stimulated and will probably cry. I would rather be thrown back into that oubliette. The staff here is helpful and friendly and seemingly unperturbed by the constant barrage of questions from a six and four-year-old. They have tiny shopping carts that they wandered the store with as they examined everything. I'm happy for you, dear reader, that they were touching things that were in sealed containers. They picked, and picked, and picked until they found the candy that was perfect for them and picked a candy for their sister who didn't come along. They were so surprised when they actually had to give it to them. There is a selection of candy from all over the world and usually seasonal findings. They also offer a wide selection of sugary drinks to go with your sugary solids. My favorite? The quarter machines where the boys got toys they didn't need and some Smarties to eat on the way home (since I didn't let them open the candy they got at the store). I am sure you've inferred that we've been back. It's a great place to 'accidentally' wind up when you're on a walk with the kids.

We spent about 20 to 25 minutes just browsing and looking at the assortment of old school candy my mom hasn't seen in a while, some did bring back memories for me too. I liked the stickers, the cloud decorations and the soda pop collection. Vanessa was super sweet just like the store. If I come back we'll definitely be visiting again.

But the workers are nice about it. So it's fine. First floor you can order food and then eat it outside or in the patio area. Hot dogs are good. You can also get ice cream and sides like onion rings. All prices are pretty average for a cafe. The other part of the first floor are savory snacks and soups, jerky, dips, pretzels, popcorn, crackers, jelly's, teas and such. You can try it all. Prices are about mediocre. Not cheap but not outrageous. Upstairs are all the cheeses, dressing, sausages, jarred condiments. Again you can get a taste of most anything. Cheeses are from all over the world and all types spicy, sharp, dill, bacon, champagne, almost anything you can think of. Prices are more expensive than Giant Eagle, Trader Joe's, Aldi's and most stores. But the combination of cheese flavors are pretty unique. Something you can't just get at those other stores. And think of it as a treat. You're not going to buy that cheese every week. So a treat is nice. Overall it is a fun experience for the whole family. We didn't go to the chocolate Sweeties side. But I am sure that is amazing too. You can eat at the cafe, buy some snacks, treats and cheese. It's fun and you don't do this every day. At least that's how I look at it. $50 dollars later. LOL! I did buy some treats as gifts too. So that is another option to consider.

They have an upstairs and downstairs of stuff, they have separate buildings you can go in.They have stuff for kids like an outdoor game area. They have samples throughout and you can ask if you want to try something. We did end up going back once we left Cleveland, but it was as crowded or even more when we came back. We were able to get some samples of cheeses and they gave us a card where we could order on the website. They have spreadable cheeses and meats. I would have liked to have spent more time there to see and taste but our time was limited. They have a little food restaurant but we did not go inside to try anything. I ended up purchasing some homemade fudge and it was delicious. The customers and the staff was nice as well and we were greeting as soon as we arrived. I didn't get to try any because everyone was right there waiting for the bacon to be done so they could get their sample.
