This is an added bonus if you make the stop to visit Grandpas Cheesebarn, it's all chocolate and candies! They offer homemade fudge and chocolates by the pound, and multiple old fashioned candies such as candy dots on paper strips and licorice laces. The fudge is very creamy and free samples are offered if you are interested. The chocolates were cheap, but taste good. If you're looking for a locally made gift, you could put together a delicious gift. They also offer prepackaged chocolate boxes. The most unique thing I saw in the store was a large bag of Lucky Charms like marshmallows. As a child I would have given anything to have an entire bowl of those marshmallows! Yum! Now all I feel when I think about that is a strong desire to brush my teeth!

First stop for me is Grandpa's Cheesebarn. When you step out of that store Sweeties is right across the way. We wanted to look into sugar-free candy and chocolates. They had an extensive variety of sugar free chocolates. We picked 4 different types (almond white bark, chocolate covered pretzels, salted caramels and another miscellaneous bag of chocolate). Trying to show someone that is diabetic that there are some sugar free alternatives to a regular full of sugar candy bar. Although the best alternative would be neither, try to convince a chocoholic. Although the person really wanted sugar-free hard candy alternatives, this will have to do. The selection is enormous, they have so many things covered in chocolate. In addition they have fudge and nuts at the counter area. Although they were also very full, it wasn't bad to walk around.

So many delicious treats from which to choose!

Located next door to Grandpa's Cheesebarn, Sweetie's is packed with candy and fudge galore - gummies, chocolates, these giant "pizzas" like S'mores and Turtle pizzas, and more. Most items were sold in very large packages, but if you want something smaller, check by the registers, where chocolate covered marshmallows and turtles were being sold individually. We picked up some chocolate peanut butter cups and airplane-shaped gummies, all of which have been much enjoyed. Parking is plentiful and the staff was very friendly. Great stop, especially if you are driving by and need a quick and delicious break.

Chocolate in all forms to satisfy your sweet tooth. Quick access to the store off of I-71 and right next door to Grandpas Cheesebarn. The selection and variety is huge. They have the typical chocolates like turtles, Buckeyes and fudge. But then they elevate it! Offering bacon coverage chocolate, a sweet and salt topped turtle and PIES made of candies. Friendly stay and a nice way to break up the boring scenery on the highway.

Sugar over load. I repeat SUGAR OVER LOAD. i am surprised we cannot smell the sugar and the chocolate from the highway!! OMG it is so wonderful. For years I have passed the signs and wanted to stop and on Friday my daughter and I did just that! We were headed down to Columbus and needed an afternoon snack for the road trip so I hopped off and pulled in. Sweeties and Grandpa's Cheese Barn are located in the same place and it's really cute. They are separate buildings and since we were pressed for time we just went into Sweeties this trip. When we got up to the door these were probably 30 kids and chaperones there visiting and enjoying their purchases. The candies looked SO good we just had no idea what we were about to encounter. We stepped inside and there was not only this wonderful aroma of chocolates being made (they have fresh fudge) but rows of all sorts of bags of candies they have made! Buckeyes, turtles, toffees, peanut butter cups - I lost count and recollection of them all. We purchased a bag of sea salt turtles and some sea salt fudge. We also picked up two caramels as we checked out. The turtles came three to a bag but we shared one and were satisfied. The milk chocolate is so creamy and I love the fact the caramel is not hard. I don't know how hey don't but it stays soft and almost liqudish. Just the perfect amount of sea salt, too! I'm sad they are now all gone! The fudge was the best I have ever had. Decadent and rich, ultra smooth and bursting with flavor. I have no words for how yummy it was. I only wish I had had the time to stop on the way back and get more. Maybe 100 miles is not too far to go grab some, lol. Looking forward to next visit!

I'm gonna eat these all in a day.

Coons Candy - First Visit…read more Let's go ahead and name what some of us have probably thought: pulling up to a place called Coons Candy comes with hesitation -- especially as a Black customer. It's an unspoken (and sometimes spoken) moment of pause, wondering what kind of experience you're walking into. But curiosity -- and a soft spot for old-school sweets -- led us to check it out. To my surprise, the staff couldn't have been more welcoming. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with friendly smiles and offered samples of fudge, toffee, and a few other homemade treats. That immediately softened the moment and brought on a bit of nostalgia -- felt like walking into one of those general stores my MawMaw would take me to, or a Cracker Barrel stop on a road trip. The store itself is exactly what you'd expect from a small-town candy shop: shelves packed with retro candies, novelty drinks, locally made honey and syrups, quirky gifts, and yes -- edible bugs. It's cozy and cluttered in a fun, old-school way. We left with: * Boba Vida popping pearls (dark cherry) * Sugar Daddy, Victory sticks, Stallion candy smokes, raspberry & green apple sticks * Locally made honey * A mix of glass-bottle sodas: * Sioux City Ginger Beer + Prickly Pear * Reading Draft Honey Cream * Drive-In Cherry Limeade * Nehi Peach * Ginger Strawberry tea * Hot & Spicy Ginger Beer This is definitely a place for folks who love that nostalgic candy-store vibe and don't mind digging through shelves of old favorites and funky surprises. ‍ Final take: It was a mixed bag. The selection was fun and the staff made us feel welcome. But the name? It sticks -- and not in a sweet way. That hesitation doesn't go away entirely, and I'd understand if someone else passed on the visit for that reason alone. I'm glad I saw it for myself. Would I go back? Maybe. Would I recommend it? Depends who's asking.

Great location: It's located on W Water Street, just WSW of Columbus avenue...it's right in heart of (resurgent) downtown Sandusky. 2. Sweets: They have a very nice selection of olde tyme candy. You'll find the likes of Abba-Zabba, Goo Goo Cluster, Chick-o-Sticks, wax mustaches/lips/fangs, etc. Obviously, they have newer brands, as well. 3. Drinks: They have a superior selection of "craft" pop, including diet Dang, the best diet pop in the world. Also, I saw Ale 8, Moxie, Cheerwine, about 75 varieties of Root beer, and a bunch more pop. 4. They have ice cream floats (can't vouch for these...yet). ...best of all... 5. The back room: It's part pop culture museum (from the 50s to the 2000s) and part flea market. Need a poster of Wonder Woman (either Lynda or Gal), John Wayne, Arnold, or Magic Johnson? Get it here. Desire to posses the Gorf cartridge or Activision Football cartridge for your Atari 2600? You're covered. Want that Fat Albert board game that you've been missing since 1973? You're in luck. There are TONS of things to check out and, if you choose, to buy. I bought a couple of books that I had as a kid and haven't seen since the 80s...("The Encyclopedia of Hostile Aliens," and "Earth's Greatest Interstellar Battles"). 6. Video Games: This is especially cool...in the back room, you'll find a MultiGame machine that's in great condition. 55 games...1 quarter per play. Come in on Friday and you'll find that it's set on "free play." Yep. I don't know about you, but the next time I'm in Sandusky, with or without the kids, drunk or sober, naked or fully clothed, I'm stopping at Soda Pop's, and ain't nobody stoppin' me! FIVE STARS!

In addition to a candy store, B.A. has an ice cream shop and mini golf. Both the ice cream shop and mini golf are very cute. Unlike the candy, the ice cream is very reasonably priced. 3-something bucks for a big scoop of ice cream and 2-something bucks for a "kiddie" sized cone, though my friends and I all agreed that the "kiddie" size was definitely more than suitable for an adult, lol. I got a scoop of the blueberry ice cream, and it was rich and creamy. Was filled with lots of actual blueberries and made for a nice, cool sweet treat on an unusually warm October day. A kid in a candy store is overwhelmed and then over-stimulated and will probably cry. I would rather be thrown back into that oubliette. The staff here is helpful and friendly and seemingly unperturbed by the constant barrage of questions from a six and four-year-old. They have tiny shopping carts that they wandered the store with as they examined everything. I'm happy for you, dear reader, that they were touching things that were in sealed containers. They picked, and picked, and picked until they found the candy that was perfect for them and picked a candy for their sister who didn't come along. They were so surprised when they actually had to give it to them. There is a selection of candy from all over the world and usually seasonal findings. They also offer a wide selection of sugary drinks to go with your sugary solids. My favorite? The quarter machines where the boys got toys they didn't need and some Smarties to eat on the way home (since I didn't let them open the candy they got at the store).
