I am not going to lie. Getting gum surgery SUCKS!!!! I didn't want to come get it done. After my initial visit, I avoided coming back for six months. However, my receding gums were not getting any better on their own. Dental hygienist had to break the news to me that in fact, things were getting worse and I better go get it taken care of.
I was scared! I was annoyed! I was apprehensive about the entire procedure! I won't go into any medical details, but basically you just have to trust that doctor and the staff are going to help you get to the other side of this. I wasn't going in for knee surgery or even the heart. But I'm telling you it might as well have been because I get very nervous when any procedures dealing with the mouth come up.
The initial visit went fine. I survived getting the procedure done. Getting gum surgery done is entirely different than having a cavity filled. You can still feel your teeth during the surgery, just not your gums in the specific quadrant that is being worked on. The outpatient surgery was a success. I was a little shaky afterward, but the thought of having it done was scarier than the actual procedure. Lots of stitches and I drove myself home just fine. I had my pain medication (Motrin was my preference), and I learned quickly how to eat only on one side during the healing process. In the beginning I only ate mashed up foods, then I slowly went to soft solids, and finally after Day 7 it was safe for me to eat regular solids again.
Everyone heals differently. That being said, for some reason Days 3-7 were really tough. My job requires me to talk a lot, all day long. If anything touched my healing zones, of any kind it was extremely painful. I felt like the pain would never end. I constantly was taking pain meds every 4-6 hours.
And then something switched. On Day 8, I suddenly felt normal again. I could eat without fear of something hitting my wounds, I could talk without being aware every second of my surgery, and my jaw didn't feel like it was swollen in the slightest. Went back for my post op, and the Dr. said my healed gum area looked great! In fact it healed faster than expected! So, my body adjusted quickly but it was not entirely easy road.
The nice part is the office took very good care of me. I was impressed with how they got me back on track. Any calls to the office were answered promptly, they fit me in when I needed a suture removal, and the Dr. always made me feel like my comfort was of the upmost importance. If you are as hypersensitive as I am, then I highly recommend you come here for any periodontal work. I can't emphasize enough how grateful I am to be on the other side of all the ickiness. read more
