My daughter was bullied at camp, called cruel names and yet no one has dealt with the issue or at least called to see how she's feeling or doing. I wish that with the communication we shared with the directors Aaron and Karen, that this camp would have reached back out to my daughter in order to show they cared about her experience. On a logical level it shows me how much my daughter was just a number and no one special. This confuses me on so many levels but maybe being so unconscious of the children you hurt is a common thing here. Believe me when I say I wish this wasn't the case. I was told by Karen not to worry and that the camp has a no bullying policy and that my daughter was safe and in good hands. Clearly, with the cruel texts it's been proven that bullying was occurring toward my daughter. It hurts my heart on many levels. As a caring mom, I think anyone can relate. I was raised to truly care about all people and that's how I raise my children. If I worked at this camp I would be heart broken that a child was hurt under my watch and would do everything I could to help resolve the situation and help my camp grow as a whole. Maybe I'm crazy but if you're in the business of helping children how can you sleep at night knowing who've hurt an innocent child?? I'm not sharing the cruel texts since it's from a child but believe me they were very abusive. Just wishing this camp would reach out and show us they care about our daughter. read more

I love this place I went last winter and it was so fun I was pretty scared but when I made friends it was so fun the food is AMAZING and the people are so nice the activities are fun and you might thing songs are annoying but the songs are cache and fun to sing with your friends I do recommend coming here it's the best!! read more

Camp alonim is the best place ever . I have been going to camp for 8 years and now I am on the staff of 3 years. I feel supported by the community and the environment around me . I am blessed to have a second home like this and expand Judaism. I love the community camp provides and the overall culture camp has. I think being sent to camp at a young age has taught me so many life lesson. I have learned many skills I wouldn't haven't learned if I wasn't at camp . This camp changed my life. This is the place where I learned what it means to be a mensch, where I learned what it means to be a leader and how to be a leader! I went to this camp for 12 summers, 7 as a camper and 5 as a staff member. Although I have a full-time job elsewhere now, I will still work an occasional family camp weekend or a Friday night Shabbat dinner, just to get back to the warmth that this community provides. This camp has made me who I am today and I could not be more grateful to the management of this camp for maintaining and enriching this environment with everything that makes it so great. read more

There's nothing that compares to the feeling of your first day back at camp. You've been counting down the days for practically a year and now the day has finally arrived. Butterflies consume your stomach. Your car pulls up to your bunk and before the car has time to turn off, your overwhelming excitement makes you run out of the car as fast as you can to all your best friends. You're squeezed with hugs and endless laughter, knowing these next few weeks will be the best of your life. Nothing compares to this moment. If home is where the heart is, then Alonim will forever be that place. After spending 12 summers here and many winters, this community made such a large impact in my life and will always have a special place in my heart. Lifelong friendships were born as days consisted of dancing, horseback riding, swimming, sports, arts & crafts, climbing the alpine tower, archery, cooking, photography, bike riding, gardening, eating amazing meals (for all diets), staying up late in our bunks, singing around the campfire, having an overnight under the stars, carnival, MSA, excitement from receiving packages in the mail (a highlight for kids), my list can go on and on. The activities were phenomenal, but more importantly the relationships formed are truly one of a kind. While I've grown up and been away from camp for many years, I'm so thankful for the memories I made, and the lessons I learned. read more

This was the venue for a retreat I had working at a university. The staff did a great job taking care of us whether it was the cottages, facilities, field, rope course, and etc. As a Jewish camp ground, keep in mind that all their food is kosher. Cottages - Surprisingly spacious and clean. They provide many soft towels, along with a comfy bed. I was able to sleep like a baby. However, just like any other camp ground that is in the middle of nowhere, be careful of bugs. There were some spider webs my ankles ran into when I walked around...on top of about 2 small spiders I had to kill. The venue is quite large and there were other camps and/or programs going on. However, the layout of the camp and the staff does a great job of making sure each camp and/or program are respecting each other's privacy. I'll be attending another retreat at this venue in the next month, and I'm looking forward to their services again. read more

I attended a retreat here with 40 other young adults for about a week. We spent time in the cabin/cottages and the main buildings as well as the dining hall. I'll break down what I experienced below: COTTAGES: Overall these were comfortable spaces. Definitely enough room for plenty of clothing, luggage, bags, etc. Each room had two double beds, a bathroom, and a desk with some chairs. The beds were moderately comfortable but not good for people who have been spoiled by memory foam mattresses. The bathroom had a section for the shower and a separate door for the toilet. There were two sinks which was a nice plus. BUILDINGS: Very high quality. The chairs to sit in were comfortable; the bathrooms were very clean and reliable. The sound from the speakers was high quality, etc. There was a fireplace in the main room that we didn't end up using. DINING HALL: A very comfortable space with plenty of good food. They had vegetarian and gluten free options as well. Dessert was always available but in small enough portions that you would not overload yourself. CAMPUS: There are so many places to go and things to do. We used the ropes course for a bit and hiked through the hills at sunset. There were orchards to pass by and trails to walk. Such a welcoming camp! Came from the Midwest and still felt a part of the community. Aside from the community, there are incredible opportunities for kids to explore different passions, the staff works incredibly hard and genuinely cares for each camper. Spoke with a lot of different staff and also new campers and they were all so excited to be there and be a part of such a great place. There isn't a day that goes by where I don't think about/talk about my experiences at Camp Alonim. As a camper for 3 summers and a staff member for 6 summers, Alonim provides experiences and friendships that have left a lasting impact on me. The community of this magical places is indescribable. As a camper, I LOVED that Alonim offered (and continues to offer) a wide array of activities, horse back riding, rockwall climbing, swimming, israeli dancing, performing arts, and so much more. Additionally, Alonim directors allow the staff to tailor programming to the evolving interests of campers. I look back SO fondly at my summers at Alonim. Filled with fun programs, unforgettable Shabbat nights, and friends I hold near and dear today. As a staff member, I felt truly invested in. I was provided with opportunities to grow as an individual, and develop the leadership skills I carry today. The year-round leadership of this camp is phenomenal. UPDATE: Originally I gave this listing a one-star review because the listing was for the "Brandeis-Bardin Institute" which no longer exists after having been absorbed by what used to be the University of Judaism and re-branded as the American Jewish University. But since now the listing is for Camp Alonim, it gets bonus stars! I never went to Camp Alonim, and yet I spent every day there for two and a half years. That's because I used to work there. One year, my non-Jewish future step-daughter even attended their day camp. She had a good time! I saw how much fun the kids had. I know how much the staff cares about them, 'cause I saw it first-hand. I haven't worked there in over three years now, but I live right by the campus and really miss the natural beauty I got to see every day - just going to work. ORIGINAL REVIEW BELOW: This place gets one star because it no longer exists, technically. The space is still there and the programs are still there, but it is no longer the "Brandeis Bardin Institute." In 2007 it was absorbed by what was the University of Judaism and became the Brandeis-Bardin Campus of the newly formed American Jewish University. Most people don't know what Brandeis-Bardin is. It's a Jewish cultural center. They have programs for children and families throughout the year that basically try to keep Jewish people Jewish by teaching them experientially. There were 3000 acres (but I think it's more like 2600 acres now - they sold some of the back area for a housing development or something), of the most gorgeous, natural landscape this side of anywhere. Imagine that - untouched, natural beauty in Southern California. It is a sight to behold. The campus is not open to the public, but is available for film locations, events and conferences. I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience Camp Alonim in a few different settings. My family has attended the annual family camp in March a couple of times and the experience has been unforgettable and welcoming every time. The staff treats us like family. The event is a great experience for our entire family. Then my boys have had the pleasure of attending sleep away camp last year. The experience was one they will never forget. They have made friendships that will last for a long time. The staff and counselors were nurturing and supportive even for my child that is completely introverted. Nice camp with fun activities and great grounds, but mediocre customer service.It gets extremely hot and sunny in the middle of the summer, but I could not make counselors help put sunscreen on my daughter. I had to call twice to figure out the extra charges on my card and one of the times a person hanged up on me. Hopefully it will improve. read more

My son was bullied by 5 other kids and instead of taking care of the situation they kicked my son out of camp for defending himself. The director Josh was not helpful at all. They would not let my son speak to us while they let other kids speak to there parents for discipline matters. The counselors and the director discriminated against my son and did nothing to help him. Would not recommend this camp not for day and not for sleepover. They are not willing to refund my money for 3rd session which is a month away and they kicked my son out 5 days after first session while he had 7 days left of camp. Josh is not being helpful at all and does not care that my son was bullied u see his supervision. This camp is overpriced and does not justify and discriminates against certain kids. read more

My kids had a blast this summer at the day camp. They came back everyday singing new camp songs they had learned. They experienced horse back riding, rock climbing, swimming, dance, arts and crafts, sports, archery. They had a true camp experience. The counselors were excited to see the kids every morning and had that same energy when I would pick them up. The staff is great and helped answer any concerns I had. I worked here for a summer and despite not knowing anyone I was welcomed with open arms. The staff was so supportive and friendly, it was clear that people had grown up there and really loved the Camp. The counselors work hard to make sure every child feels appreciated and supported, and it shows. The kids are loved and taken care for and then some. The staff is well educated and are ready to help with kids and parents. They are communicative and want to do their best to make every child and family have a magical summer. 10/10 read more

Boy and girl CIT campers are allowed to sleep together. Management is wishy washy and doesn't check cabins at night to prevent this activity, despite repeated notice to the head of camp. In our son's cabin a boy and girl slept together in the boy's bed nearly every night for 3 sessions. The head of the camp blamed it on "ragining hormones." I went to this camp growing up and have now sent my kids there two years in a row. My daughter is shy and had the most amazing time. My son who is there now asked to go longer this year. He just wrote us a letter saying how amazing it is and how much fun he is having, especially with the counselors. I truly don't understand the negative reviews on here.
