Southwest Family YMCA - outside pool

Southwest Family YMCA

I really liked going to this YMCA especially since this location has an indoor heated pool and hot…read moretub, great for winters. However, the past few times that I have been here, the hot tub has been closed off and I also ended up getting an ear infection for the first time :( Makes me question the hygiene and sanitization practices at this pool. They even have painters come in during pool hours so the entire enclosed space is filled with paint smell and fumes.

Even though it's okay here, I'd still recommend this YMCA. Just a few odd quirks here and some…read moreundesirable effects. First off the parking here is a challenge. Spaces are too small, and you can guarantee your car getting dinged. Mine already has, and I was even in the car when she did it, I confronted her and she just gave me a nasty look and did not apologize. I had to leave it at that since she had a small child with her, but she apparently didn't give AF. I've noticed similar behaviors with other patrons who park there. I use the pool here - it's outside. Most of the inside of this place is carpeted, which is quite odd, when you come in from the pool or the spa or indoor pool you walk on carpet and the carpet gets drenched. Not good. I detest that you have to walk all the way through various hallways and by the gym and the other pool to get to the locker room if you're coming / going to the outside pool. Kinda feels like you're at a hotel and having to walk down the carpeted hallway bypassing several rooms / areas in your swimsuit, or if you're wet with a towel. The indoor pool is fine, but when they hold those Zumba courses there - that Zumba instructor is - how can I saw this - irritating to say the least. She has forced a rule - you cannot turn on the jacuzzi jets during her classes because it's too loud and they cannot hear or talk to each other. This has been a bothersome rule for years now, and many of us have complained, yet this Zumba instructor wins all the time. I get it when you have a full pool of people, but some of her Zumba classes have only 4-6 people attending, they take over the whole indoor pool, she blasts the music so damn loud it's like you're at a club, and they don't talk to each other anyway so WTF?? They could use the other half of the pool (away from the jacuzzi) since there's only 6 of them, so everyone can use the facilities, but after complaining about this - I was rejected. I was also informed by several other members - they have complained too but have also been rejected. It's irritating AF and it's not respectful when there is no compromise. The basketball court is smaller here. The weight room is open and carpeted. The showers are okay, the bathrooms at times could be cleaner, the men's locker room is on the smaller side and quite compacted for space. The outside pool - it's heated during the winter time and it's open all year round. Swam the other day - it was 75 degrees outside temps and pool was 88 degrees, it was nice. But once you get out of the pool - yikes. But it's a nice change of pace here. They just updated the deck space around the pool. Service here has always been nice. Never had a bad experience with the any of them, all very responsive and answer my questions and good customer service. I don't frequent here as much but will go sometimes if it's convenient for my schedule. Can we just work out the Zumba lady and jacuzzi jets please?

Figment Creative Labs - Wind tunnel

Our family adores Figment. It's unlike anywhere else we've been…read more They have SO many sensory activities for our 2 year old. A water bin, play dough, paint, rice bin. They have an insane selection of toys. Cars, musical instruments, trucks, dolls, pretend food. They have an outside area with a beautiful playhouse, chalk, the coolest trampoline I've ever seen, and giant blocks. The endless activities aren't the only thing that sets figment apart. The teachers there are so kind and happily play with the kiddos. Lastly, and probably my favorite part of this place, there's so many animals! They've got cats, goats, a guinea pig, a bunny, a tortoise (I think lol), and birds. My son always puts up a fight to leave! Figment is our favorite place to go when we don't know what to do. I do wish they had memberships available. We'd sign up in a heartbeat.

Y'all! I cannot say enough good things about this place. It is a magical place where children of…read moreall ages come to create, explore, express, and learn through art and play. We have attended the toddler group several times. There are several different activities set up and the children can pick their preferred activity. This really fosters independence in a safe environment. All the activities are fun sensory activities that are very intentional for language learning and development. The best part is the different animals. There are three miniature goats that are very gentle with the children and very mischievous too. There is also Lizzo the lizard, a bunny, some hamsters, chickens, and Origami the cat. The staff is phenomenal and very encouraging and loving with the children. There are different classes for different age groups and there is an option to have an art teacher come to your home and do some activities with your child. I recommend this to anyone who has a child that is looking for fun, safe, educational, and exciting activities!

ATX Kids Club - 4 pick-up/drop-off locations around the city. I love not needing to drive into/from downtown during rush hour this year!

Our 4th grader had a fantastic time during his week of summer day camp with ATX Kids Club and we…read morecan't wait for the next opportunity for a field trip with Tammy's wonderful crew. What's so great? 1) Small groups with a low child-to-teacher ratio. During our week, there were approximately 8-10 kids and almost always 2 or more counselors at each outing. The curriculum has an educational/health & fitness focus, and the well-trained counselors are managed by a certified teacher (Tammy) who is often present during the week. 2) Exercise & being outdoors. The kids are moving most of the day, walking around town to see the sights, playing on splash pads & playscapes, or taking a hike. ATX Kids like to move it, move it! 3) Being a tourist in your own city. The kids (ages 4 - 12) learn to use public transportation and recognize city landmarks while exploring many of the cool destinations available in their hometown. During our week in Summer 2016, our child toured several art museums and historical sites, visited a few parks and walked urban trails. A highlight at the end of the week was visiting the Governor's Mansion and having snack time with the First Dog of Texas, Pancake. 4) Supporting a community-based, local nonprofit. ATX Kids Club offers discounts for children whose families might otherwise be unable to afford this kind of summer camp. They also serve as a CCMS provider through the Texas Workforce Commission. 5) Having a "normal workday" schedule for a reasonable fee. Summer camp hours are 9a-5p ($275/wk), and you can add extended care for 8a-6p for an additional fee ($65/wk). This is such a relief compared to other summer camps that require parents to juggle work hours for drop-off and pickup. I do recommend the extended care unless you work very close to the drop point. Downtown rush hour traffic is horrific! It was fun for us to see the play-by-play pictures of the kids in action on the ATX Kids Club FB page each day, confirming that our child was enjoying camp and making new friends. We're looking forward to signing up for Summer 2017, as well as trying out some of the school holiday and Saturday adventures later this year.

(That's also why we were able to enroll for individual days.) She's selective in hiring guides, and extremely creative in finding things to do around the city, many accessed via public transportation. Kid came home tired and happy each day, with stories to tell about the "main" activities and the "bonus" activities which they keep in their back pocket depending on how the day goes. Will be back!
