We hadn't planned on going here as we had intended to try Melissa O' Hare's food truck offerings that were the same offerings a week ago on our first sojourn. She had parked up within a glamping style place with a stunning view of Camlough lake. It was a dull cool overcast grey day. We speculated that Melissa wouldn't be too busy. Wrong as the line was huge. We guessed we'd queue at least an hour but we aren't prepared to queue five minutes especially in this climate of 9 winter months, two autumn months and maybe one summer month. So we ended up here. All four of us loved our food here. I had delicious fish tacos (£16 with a choice of side). The fish was cod in a light batter with fresh lime, coriander, fresh chilli. My first choice of scampi wasn't available. I opted for a chunky chips side to share around as I didn't want them. While 5 star grub it's too expensive for what it is but was the only dish overpriced. I noted from the menu that a fillet steak with fixings is now £40. The desserts (all £6.5) were scrumptious and fair priced - I had raspberry ruffle baked Alaska and a flat white (£3). Cosy place. The staff are wonderful too. Hope we return soon.

We waited to be seated but there wasn't anyone to seat us. We waited far too long and when the waitress - the older of the only two waitresses serving/ arrived. The greeting was flat and almost felt like she was being put out. She arrived just in time as the barman was about to seat us. I've eaten here hundreds of times over the years. I ordered oysters as a starter only for the waitress to return a few moments later to confirm they had none. Well that's a first. Carlingford Oyster company is a few miles away. So my order became seafood chowder and fillet steak medium. My side dish tobacco onions. My son also ordered the chowder which for the half lifetime I've been eating it here has been superb but not this time. We each knew it wasn't as rich and deep flavoured as before and we were really disappointed. This is one of their finest dishes and we really hope this is a one off. If it happens again we'll send it back and have it off the bill. The price charged means it must be ace every time. I asked for white pepper for my chowder the availability of which was uncertain and when it arrived the younger waitress said I was lucky. If white pepper isn't always available just close. It's not as important as salt is to cooking but it's great for seasoning. I often choose it over black pepper almost always. My fillet was requested medium and it came with a pepper sauce that didn't pour but moved sludge like in lumps in short it was gloop; if it had cream it wasn't discernible nor had it evidence of butter. It tasted factory made. One of the corner stones of the success of Fitzpatrick's was cooking based on classic French cooking (Escoffier) and sauces. It elevates their chowder and onion soups and makes sauces moreish - this pepper sauce is far away from this and it's not and nowhere near good enough. If Danny was still there this sauce wouldn't be and no chef would have had the nerve to put it before him. My fillet was well done, medium to well and medium as I proceeded through it. I'm not precious about it and it was tasty good quality meat which I enjoyed. I only draw a line at bloody meat. My son always opts for rare. The tobacco onions were superbly flavoured stand out 5 stars. I asked for English mustard for my steak but it never arrived and the two overworked waitresses were nowhere to be seen. As desserts weren't offered due to their invisibility I got up to pay. There were five or six guests in the doorway waiting to be seated just as we were earlier that evening and no waitress around. The barman took our payment and I didn't tip which I didn't like but I was not happy. I told the barman some of the issues lousy pepper sauce, non delivery of mustard and poor tasting chowder: he said he'd pass it on. Next time I will return food that's not up to the standard I'm used to at the prices charged.

We are going ti Ireland again shortly on holiday and Saltwater Brig will be our number one priority for another visit. We were back in Ireland for another holiday in November. The Saltwater Brig was top of our agenda for a return visit.......and we weren't disappointed. Once again everything about it was superb - the beautiful location beside Strangford Lough, the cosy surroundings and the welcoming staff (especially Olive who is the friendliest waitress you could meet). Then there is the food. The extensive menu is fantastic and we cannot speak highly enough of its quality, and all very reasonably priced. If you enjoy "a taste of Ulster" put The Saltwater Brig on your MUST VISIT list. We guarantee you will love it.

A very important element as two of our party are vegan. We had a lovely evening and were blown away by the fantastic food, beautiful restaurant and warm ambience. Service was slow-moving which suited us perfectly as we wanted a leisurely, relaxed, family evening. Everyone in our party enjoyed their food, with the pièce de résistance being the exceptional vegan dishes. My starter was a flavourful platter of stuffed peppers, olives, mushrooms, bread and chutney. For main course I had roast winter veg, semolina & salsa verde with vegan chips and Garlic Rough Cuts. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. When booking I had mentioned that two of us are vegan and the Chef surprised us by created a couple of luxurious, off-menu desserts, a vegan Merengue and chocolate, praline, cherry mousse. This really was something special - we were so impressed! Thank you Moody Boar for such a fantastic evening, phenomenal vegan food and completely excelling all our expectations. They have a lot of different menu items so I decided to ask the server for local food items. She advised that the mussels, calamari, haddock and ribs were local so we opted for a large bowl of mussels and regular size plates of haddock and ribs. They had a lot of interesting choices from all around the world but I like to taste the local ingredients when in traveling. We got the mussels in the white wine cream sauce and I was very happy with that choice because they were so fresh and almost sweet. My dinner companion was not happy that this mussel was tiny. It didn't bother me. The Haddock boujons were perfectly cooked and crispy. They came on top of a little mashed potatoes with mushy peas. For the final plate we got the ribs. They were heavenly, I almost want to say the best I've ever had. The reason. Why is because the meat was tender like butter. The flavor was delicious but it wasn't heavy or heavily smoked like the libs in the USA. They were like air. Not sure if that makes sense but it's the best way I can describe it. For dessert we got the Bailey's cheesecake. It was so smooth that it was like a mousse. Soooo good. The house wine was an insanely good Sauvignon Blanc. The service was great. They were very attendant. The ambience is casual which I liked. The only negative mark o can give is that the beer on draught is German. I was dying for a pint if Irish beer and had to settle for a bottle. I would recommend this restaurant. Everything we had was good

I know people who have moved away to work and live and when they return home for visits a stop here is a must for them. I find that sad. I was with a group who decided to go here for their chicken burger and chips. It would never be my choice but I was well outnumbered. It was takeaway given the Wu flu and while I had this rubbish bought for me but I think it was around £7.5 for chicken breast burger & chips with a Diet Coke. The burger included a white bread roll and coleslaw. The chicken had a coating that was barely ok. The coleslaw was predominantly thin sliced white cabbage with a very well thinned down factory made mayonnaise. Euch. The Diet Coke was flat and had an unpleasant chemical note to its smell/taste. The factory made chips were a good size, cooked in a factory refined veg oil rather than animal fat but they were poorly cooked so they were limp and lukewarm and a deeply unpleasant eat after only a few minutes. The bread roll had all the texture of how I imagine damp cardboard - in short poor. Hunger made me eat the industrial chicken, I had some of the top part of the factory made bread roll and two chips. This is nasty food - it has the edge on Mc D's - but at the price it's sheer rip off. Hopefully I won't re experience this place. If you want this type of food try making your own as the quality and taste difference will be huge and your tummy and intestines will thank you.

Needless to say it's not my choice ever, and I don't mind if I never return. Unlike Mc Donald's, the industrially made chips are chunky here and the portion is fairly generous. The chips don't go cold too quickly either. The taste suggests they are fried in vegetable oil. They even offer vinegar sachets. Mc D chips are grim and there wouldn't be a single decent size potato's worth in a medium serving. My choice here was their chicken fillet burger and that's what you get, a very lightly battered decently portioned piece of chicken breast in a white bread seeded bun. It costs about £5.50. Add another £2 for a fizz less soft drink and chips The chicken is stringy, which is what happens when chicken is frozen then cooked more than once. I had coleslaw atop; well not really coleslaw it's white cabbage slaw as it was only white cabbage and industrially made, persil white mayonnaise, with no shortage of mayonnaise. No fresh tomato, no pickled gherkin, no fresh lettuce. Little chance of a part of your five a day here, maybe the chips. I tried a child's chicken nugget and it was again a very light batter and chicken breast. Again not like you - know - who that finds it acceptable to mince chicken breast meat and skin about fifty - fifty and serve this up to kids, euch. A child's meal with a soft drink is £4. I looked and smelled the chicken gravy. Oh dear, no thank you. It had the consistency of well mixed cement. It also had a skin on top which was resistant to chip dipping - so the kid I watched pushed the gravy skin to one side. We were upstairs which was uncomfortably cold, barely comfortable seats, factory warehouse dull and had a faint whiff of chicken gravy, which I found unpleasant.
