I was in a similar situation as Lilian H. I was asked to relocate by my landlord and given some money to make it easier for me to move. I was tired of renting and having to rent in a city where the rent keeps going up and up. Prior to deciding to buy a home I went to another mortgage lender where the loan officer ran my credit and told me what I qualified for ($250,000) and referred me to her husband who was a realtor. I emailed her to let her know what kind of house I was looking for and I never heard back from her or her husband. I guess everything happens for a reason. A week later a friend referred me to Joanna my realtor and things just got better when she introduced me to Kevin. I qualified for more on both a condo and house. I chose a condo because it was really hard to purchase a home in LA for the price I was looking for but I'm not too far from LA.
