After a recommendation of a friend, we tried this on the way home from New Orleans. Food was subpar at best. The squash and shrimp casserole, which the reviews raved about, tasted like a bottle of file had been dumped in and was slimy and congealed. The raw were fine but the bits of shell from improper shucking, crumbled saltines, and half frozen and congealed cocktail sauce ruined it. The fried shrimp were ok, but the bread pudding was drowned in so much sauce it was hard to discern the true flavor of the bread pudding part. Service was awful, had to beg for refills over and over, and dirty plates were never removed from table. For a $70 meal of so so food for 2 and lazy, uninterested service, I won't be back nor would I ever recommend it. read more

Decided to stop here for lunch on a Thursday, seems a very popular eating place. I ordered the special of the day which was the 5oz burger, mashed potato and peas. Enjoyed the food, staff were very friendly and greeted me upon arrival. Loved the decor, this is the second time I have seen the same painted tables in this area and just love them. Camellia Cafe does not disappoint. Their breakfast is delicious and unique with a lot of southern flare (grits and country potatoes that will keep you coming back). Everything i have ordered here (eggs Benedict, omelette, both with the sides I mentioned above) were stellar. Prices are not Rock bottom, but worth the extra dollar or two compared to waffle H. The decor is something special- Cajun and cute, but tasteful. I see people ordering breakfast cocktails, but I haven't tried one yet. I plan to go back again and again. read more

me and my friends came here to have lunch and none of us liked the food. i got the crawfish ettouffee and that was okay but the mac and cheese was gross and i don't think it was baked like they say, the crab bisque was so watery and had no flavor, the hush puppies were stale and the seafood pasta was over cooked and there was a hair in my fried pickles. the service was... odd. one of the servers apologized before we even got our food for how bad it was going to be and we ordered fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and she asked us how they were and we said they were good to which she said "oh really? it looked terrible". the fried green tomatoes were actually the only thing on the menu that was good. this is DEFINITELY the worst restaurant i've ever been to. read more

The bad reviews make me sad. This is one of my all time favorite places to eat. I've never had a bad meal here, and I've had a variety of their dishes. The chicken salad on a croissant is one of my favorites, and they'll even put spinach leaves in it at my request. The jalapeno poppers are served with pepper jelly and are one of my favorite appetizers, and you wouldn't go wrong with the fried mozzarella either. AND OMG the bread pudding. The BEST i have ever ever had. They put some kind of fluffy meringue on top of it and is amazing. Definitely give this place a try. read more

I have family that live in the area...and they rave about this restaurant. Since I'm always on the hunt for some good food, I figured while in the area, why not stop? Let me first say that the only real reason that I'm giving a 3 star review is based on my family member's experiences that I was not a part of. We had the shrimp, corn, and crab bisque which was tasty and full of crab, but the shrimp were a bit overdone. No biggie. What really put me on the downslope was the wait time to be helped and to order. Took quite awhile. Then, the thing that really did it was my entree. Had the roast beef poboy and I was not satisfied at all. The roast beef tasted like sliced deli meat that someone sautéed with the brown gravy mix. What made it worse is that I found a hair on my food . Our waitress was very kind and did not charge us, however it was still not a great experience. Stopped in for lunch today and was very happy we did. The red beans and rice were fabulous. My husband had the country fried steak and really enjoyed his as well. Kids spaghetti was a large enough portion that they were able to have it for lunch and dinner when we got home. Would definitely recommend giving them a try. read more

Mediocre at best. Definitely won't return. Ordered a seafood platter that came with a side salad and a side. The only thing that actually tasted good was the side salad. The seafood itself was edible but not return worthy at all. The sweet potato fries were good(pretty hard to mess those up). The red beans were not good, they tasted of vinegar. The coleslaw was awful in so many ways, dressing consistency was lumpy, taste was non-existent. Had to get a second bowl bc the first one was warm. 2nd bowl was cool, taste was awful. I've had many versions of coleslaw, this was hands down the worst. Spaghetti and meatballs were so so, meatballs had too many ingredients and mushy. Ate there for dinner on a Friday night. Overall good food. Tried the etoufee. Everything tasted made from scratch. My wife and I split the large seafood platter. We had plenty with the etoufee added into the mix. I especially enjoyed the soft shell crab and fried catfish. Waiter service was prompt and courteous. Horrible service. Multiple people walked out while we were there. We couldn't leave because we already had too much time invested. The waitress for the table next to ours then admitted that she never put in their order. Our server kept saying the food would be coming soon and that it took forever due to the fries. When two sets of fries came, they were soggy and cold. When the third set of fries came, they were so oppressively hot, our kids spit them out. One out of four plates came out wrong. If I could leave zero stars I would!! Do not waste your time going here!! My friends and I went here for lunch, and everything was pretty disgusting.. I ordered the shrimp, corn and crab bisque(they have photos online) but what came out was certainly not it, it was so watery and had no flavor at all. It tastes like they poured all the corn juice in this soup, I could not eat it! I never send food back but there was no way I'm paying this. My husband ordered the gumbo and it looked like dog food and it was gooey and cold. My friends order pasta and other things but none of it was good at all. We ordered the fried green tomatoes and that was actually good and the server made a comment "was that good? It looked terrible" She was very odd and she pre apologized for the food before we even got it!! Advertising 2 for 10 breakfast Monday thru Wednesday except they charge you regular price and act like its a née special and your responsibility is to tell them. after 3rd time I called them and had receipt. Was told Ryan the mana would call me and refund my 13 for over charging me except he refused to call me so I stopped in and was told not in but would call. Two days later still not call so I called him. Ryan told me that they do not offer that special anymore and would not be giving me my money back. Explained that the special was in place two weeks ago when we came in . He said he did not care he was not refunding anything. This is terrible that a business offers specials , over charges you and could careless to make it right and would rather lose customers over 13 dollars. This place is a joke! Be sure to check your receipts because evidently it's your responsibility to make sure they charge you for Specials. Excellent food with a Cajun/ local flair. The prices are reasonable for dinner, but they do not have a lunch menu; thus, far too expensive for lunch. The prices are in the $11-16 range, which is fine for dinner. The food is very good...very tasty red beans & rice, good seafood platter, and the corn bisque! My family and I drove out to Mississippi from Florida for a marathon and decided to drive over to Slidell just to eat at Camellia's Cafe after reading about it on the Internet. My husband ordered the red beans and rice, my daughter ordered the seafood pasta, and I ordered the shrimp, corn, and crab bisque. Our service and our meal was terrific from start to finish. Even though the meals were enormous, we still made room for the bread pudding dessert. That was phenomenal. And of course, our server Robert was exceptional!!! read more

So I met family here as they were passing through town, chose the place based in part on decent overall rating. Boy do I regret that. 4 adults, 1 teenager, 3 small children, not a huge party by any means, and there was only one other table of people there. First, I order a Bud Light. Nope, we're out of that. (This started a trend...) Abita? Nope. Okay fine, sweet tea. Dad orders a Coors Light, kids go to order and are told "No Coke, we're out." Really?!? First entree selection - Red Beans and rice, nope, out of that. After the other orders all went in, while waiting (and waiting, and waiting) for the food, Dad orders another beer. Guy comes back and sheepishly says, "Well, we're not out of Coors Light... however we're out of clean glasses." How long does it take to run a commercial dishwasher? And wouldn't you think when you get low that someone would have done so? Remember, they're not exactly busy at this moment... Food finally arrives, mediocre at best, lots of obvious commissary type items were used, very little if any fresh ingredients or items. Service was very very slow and not very friendly either. I just returned from working up North for a few months and was craving some good ole Southern / Creole Food. My husband suggested Camellia Cafe, because although it's been a while, we had eaten there a few times before and always liked it. This time, I decided to try the Red Beans & Rice and my husband had his usual hamburger. The beans and rice were cooked perfectly and the smoked sausage in it had a really good smoked flavor. It was prob. the best I've ever had (besides my Mom's).. and my husband said his burger was good too.. The service was good as well. We were waited on promptly and this was at lunch time. The prices are very reasonable too, which is another reason why this is one of our favorites in Slidell. Now, I'm anxious to try the Catfish and maybe the Bread Pudding on our next trip. read more

Awful experience! If I'd wanted to be annoyed by a fly throughout my meal, I'd have gone to the landfill. Worst thing about it: the waitress thought it was funny. The first thing I saw when I looked at the side salad was a piece of rusty, limp lettuce. Picked that off and the rest of the salad was edible -- nothing to write home about: a single cherry tomato, a single slice of cucumber, some grated cheese, and a lot of lettuce. This was our first visit here. It is a small place, and filled quickly with locals coming for Saturday dinner. We started with the onion rings, which were fantastic. A bit on the large side, but with a wonderful crispy batter, and good dipping sauce. This was easily enough for four people, we could not finish them. My wife had the Hwy 59 Seafood Pasta. It was very good, but she mentioned that she did not find any crabmeat, but was happy with the amount of crawfish and shrimp. I had one of their seafood platters, but don't remember the name. It was something like the Riverland seafood platter, it comes with a soft shell crab, and was $22.95. There was plenty of food here, enough for two. Unfortunately, except for the fish, it was all overcooked. Oysters were cooked so much that they were just little balls of crunch. We finished with the bread pudding. It was okay, nothing to write home about. I would not get it again. The service was good, though. Courtney took good care of us, and did a fine job of getting us out quickly when we mentioned we were on the way to a concert and had to get on the road. We are not locals, and probably will not go out of our way to eat here again. However, if we were local, I definitely would give it another try. Fantastic! We went here on the recommendation of our hotel clerk in pearl river. Small and cozy with a laid back atmosphere. We ordered shrimp PO boys, and a cup of seafood bisque. WOW! Loved everything. The bisque was delicately flavored. The PO boys were very good, but not heavy at all. We ordered dessert: bread pudding and chocolate cake. The bread pudding was awesome with merengue on top, while the cake was generous and tasty. If we are ever back we will visit them again. . read more
