Margaritas here are very strong. The happy hour was 4-6pm and I got 2 margaritas for the price of 1 which was great. That's a deal. If you want fresh seafood this place seems spot on. I ordered the lobster and shrimp combo for 400 pesos which was around $25. It was fantastic it was grilled with garlic and butter on the grill. Wow wow wow! Very friendly servers here. Made me feel very welcome. This is an outside eating and seating place. Very casual so don't expect anything fancy here just great food. Only downside is that its a cash only place so bring your pesos. I also noted that the exchange rate they gave on US dollars wasn't that bad ($16 at this place but $16.60 at exchange place). read more

Found this little gem, while doing some shopping in the Zona Hotelera markets and so happy we did! The owner was super friendly, offering us complimentary drinks and tequila shots for our first day arrival in Cancun. I don't like to drink, but couldn't refuse the generous hospitality of our new friend! We ordered a variety of different tacos; chicken, steak, pastor, seafood, shrimp and just filling ourselves with authentic Mexican goodness. The venue will seat around 20 people, with outdoor patio seating as well. The food was great, service was perfect, and they even wanted to take pictures from seeing me compete on American Ninja Warrior! I first start off saying that this place is the closest to the aloft hotel. It is right around the corner less than 600 feet away. My boyfriend and I decided to go here to have dinner the other night. The owner greeted us. He's was the only person serving. But there where no servers etc. It's all outdoor seating very small restaurant probably can hold at least maybe 30 people. My boyfriend ordered a margarita, the owner said he makes the best. When I tasted it it tasted soo sweet. We only ask for lime and tequila. no margarita mix so he added another shot on the house because it was definitely very sweet but he offered to fix it and I just ordered a sprite. I ordered the fish fillet which came with steamed vegetables which to me tasted awful. there was no flavor and a small quarter ounce of rice. This fish fillet that didn't have very much flavor, the owner Felipe , he said he cooked it with garlic and butter the texture was amazing the flavor was OK I probably wouldn't order it again. Next my boyfriend ordered the conch and lobster tacos he said they were the best that he has ever had ( but he also had about 6 beers prior) lol ... Felipe said conch is also an aphrodisiac- which I thought was Hilarious. My boyfriend, thoroughly enjoyed because it was something new that we don't get to typically try in California! But the rest of his food like the beans and rice were very bland. I think most people come here because they see the pictures of the ginormous plate of food of the calamari and lobster and all the other stuff which is about $55. I wasn't that hungry, so I just know it would have been a waste of food. but when we got our check for the fish fillet the one drink a Sprite and his dinner our total was definitely not what was said on the menu. We paid out and left. The owner thought we should leave a huge tip yet he jacked the price up st the end?? Which I didn't appreciate, I mean what am I supposed to do? Complain to management?? Anyways. Some people like it. Some don't. I probably would t come back. There are better taco places like the side place right on the side wall of Senor frogs. We got 10 tacos and two drinks for $12 in especially in Cancun if you're going to come here to not want to spend money and go to the small places where all the locals eat. if you want to drop a Lotta money I wouldn't suggest still coming here. this service was OK and he was yelling the orders to the back kitchen right in front of us. read more

I really wanted to give this place a high rating but they really turned out to be kind of shady. It bummed me out. They're very kind, warm, and welcoming which is nice. & I wasn't in the mood for pretentious or resorty. I wanted something easy good local and low key. I ordered. They brought out some yummy salsas, but the chips were flavorless, hard & stale. The portions were really big, but again kind of bland. I had to add salt and lime to everything. If you look at even recent photos, you can see that their prices have really gone up. But not the quality or flavor. I asked the waiter if the "4 tacos for $8.95" deal included ANY of the tacos, to which he replied yes! So I ordered two fish tacos & two lobster. When I got my bill, it was SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than I had tallied. (Of course they only accept cash.) Turns out he charged me for FOUR lobster tacos. I ordered two. Nestled in a courtyard across the street from the Selecto Chedraui in the center of the hotel zone, Calyso's projected a dark, quiet, and peacefully romantic atmosphere that called out to us. Two very steep and uneven steps only added to the ambience and successfully raised the restaurant floor level to slightly overlook the charming plaza below. We were greeted by a waiter standing in front of the steps trying to entice people casually passing by into joining him for dinner. He was, at the same time, both charming and screaming of desperation. There is the same duality here that is prevalent everywhere within the hotel zone of "Con"cun Mexico. The grabby, greedy desperation that makes you want to run away as fast as possible and the friendly charismatic charm buried beneath the greed. We were very tired and found the atmosphere to be too enticing to pass up along with the two for one drink offer so we slowly and most carefully navigated the steep steps to our awaiting table. The prices, while reasonable, were higher than the prices we are use to at the mom and pop places where we usually eat at home. We were eating within the hotel zone so that was kind of to be expected though not universally true. I ordered two lobster tacos, two shrimp tacos and a mojito. The salsas were watery and did not have much flavor, and my lobster tacos also did not have a lot of flavor and were a bit disappointing. The only thing that even sort of stood out was the shrimp tacos. The shrimp was always good in "Con"cun and Calypso's was no exception. A nice outdoor local Mexican restaurant is located in a closed distance to the city spotlights with good food, good price, and friendly owner. We are recommending this place to anyone coming to Cancun. We love the seafood platter, the rice, the drinks and definitely love the price. We stumbled upon this restaurant when we stayed at the aloft Cancun last June. We were tired/hungry and we could see this place from our room. I recognized Felipe from the Hard Shell Taco that we used to frequent on our Cancun trips back in the 90's. He was always so friendly and such a great host. Quite a strange twist of fate to see him after all these years. He sat us down and brought us some drinks and menus. We ordered some grilled shrimp & lobster platters with baked potatoes. The food was fresh & delicious and the chips and salsa were also very good. The prices are very reasonable as well. They have quite an extensive menu for such a small establishment but everything was delicious. We can't wait to return in August and see our old buddy Felipe! read more

Service was super fast for México. I had 2 delicious margaritas. I decided on 4 tacos, 2 grilled shrimp and 2 breaded fish. I am a bit of a taco snob...don't trick me with 2 baby shrimp and a heap of lettuce. Not here! They arrived with limes and guacamole and a homemade tartar type sauce for fish. Yum ! The shrimp were huge and juicy! Everything was spilling out. The fish was flaky, fresh and just lightly breaded, so good. The meal came with chips, pico de Gallo and 2 other sauces which I was not brave enough to try given a morning habanero accident. I went through 5 napkins with these juicy, stuffed delights. Although an outdoor café, it is shielded from the sun and a soft breeze made it very comfortable. They played authentic music at a good level. Loved it! I might return tomorrow . read more

After traveling around the Yucatan on a budget, my boyfriend and I treated ourselves to Calypso's in Cancun! Short walk from the busy main strip, we were greeted and seated by the friendly owner and chomped away at the chips and salsa. My boyfriend ordered the crab claws and I got the lobster and shrimp. Oh..my..gosh...it was all delicious! The seasoning was great, the seafood was juicy and our server even gave us some more utensils to help with the tricky shell bits. Our whole meal with a bucket of beer costed us around $70! We went on a quiet Monday night, there were just 2-3 other tables of customers. They played awesome 80s music and the service was great. There are not many choices outside of hotel restaurants and flashy tourist spots in this part of Cancun, but even this is a step down. The food was overcooked, completely lacked flavor, and expensive. The service was fair. Hop on the bus and check out the restaurants in town for a much better experience.
