Cancún has a vast number of interesting restaurants and we like to try as many as possible while enjoying our annual hiatus from the Ohio winters. We found many of them to be quite good, but there's one that we feel deserves special mention. We discovered the Calypso restaurant during our Cancun visit in Feb. 2019. We had been shopping at the supermarket nearby and was searching for a place to eat, preferably seafood. We walked by the Calypso, looked at their menu and decided to give them a try. They brought out chips & salsa and some of the best guacamole we've had. We ordered the lobster for two and it was served hot and delicious with generous portions. We noticed that Felipe , the owner was wearing an Iowa Hawkeyes hat and matching jersey. Being from Ohio, we asked him about his clothing choice and he explained that many of his friends will bring him hats and other mementos when they drop by. I then noticed license plates from many countries around the world displayed on his wall. So there's a lot more to the Calypso Restaurant than serving delicious Mexican food. My wife and I went there as strangers and left feeling like part of Felipe's extended family. We met some of the "regulars" who said that visiting the Calypso was always an enjoyable part of their annual Cancun vacation and had been for many years. We recently returned to Cancun and one of our first stops was the Calypso. Great food and atmosphere... just minutes from Fiesta Americana, Hard Rock Cafe and Coco Bongo. Lovely outside tables, super friendly service and fish fresh from the family owned boats. Tequila free on the house after dinner for us and the restaurant owner is a great guy. Highly recommended, I'll be back! read more

Really not recommend! They were enthusiastic and welcoming us well at first. But the food, were not that good as we thought. The seafood collection or whatever is not fresh at all, seems and tastes like having storing for several days！And it's expensive, not worth it at all! Don't let the location steer you away! This is the nicest little shack restaurant. The workers were very nice! After eating at a bad food vendor the day before, I was hesitant to eat anywhere that wasn't directed towards tourists... but this place was delicious! The staff was super friendly too. Food was amaaazing! F & F is one of the cornerstones in Cancun for authentic Spanish food. He took great care in making sure my food was gluten free and even has a separate fryer for the corn chips to avoid contamination. Make sure to get the guacamole. The location was convenient living in the Aloft hotel. Food was great with a variety of options, and service was prompt and amazing. The owner seems like he's there to have a good time with the guests, and even treated us to Tequila shots at the time as we were the last table to leave the restaurant before closing. read more

This place got some decent seafood and we were a bit surprised. We weren't expecting much but that just made it better. Food took a while to come out but we got a big family. I visited here last April. Actually Me and my wife is not a big fan of Mexican food, so It was really big challenge for us to choose a restaurant during stay in Cancun. (We also didn`t wanted to eat western food in hotel that we can eat anytime at U.S) But luckily, We found Calypso`s and really enjoyed their food. Amazing! I wanted tacos, and we found this place. Amazing tacos and the most awesome atmosphere. Felipe is such a welcoming host and his staff is amazing. The shrimp tacos and the octopus tacos are to die for. Seriously. The conch ceviche is mind blowing. If you want some real tacos, a mellow scene and great service check this place out. We went two nights in a row, and would have gone 3 but we had to go home! I've seen some people complaining about this place. It isn't a tourist spot. Expect great food, awesome service and a beautiful seating area. Don't expect a whole hoopla because you came. Felipe and Chuy are awesome. You'll probably get some tequila shots if you are cool too! You do need to pay tip-it's worth it for the one on one service you get. When you have folks coming to the same place for 5 years, you know it's good. Yup, stairs up aren't even. This isn't a club or gourmet place. It's amazing food, awesome service and real people. If that isn't your scene, don't bother. You will be disappointed. If you want some of the best tacos and ceviche I've ever had, and an owner who wants to make sure you loved every bite, go. And try the octopus tacos. They are truly mind blowing. I'm sorry, but my wife and I came here based off of some of the good reviews. It was just not good. Everything tasted old, not fresh, even the drinks were not made well (we could only taste lime juice). The manager gave us 15% off the bill since our plates had most of the food still on it. In detail, the chips were stale, the guacamole tasted old, the octopus ceviche tasted as if it had expired, and the shrimp ceviche was on the verge of expiring. *Also noticed: As we were leaving, a kitchen employee walked out of the bathroom and began using hand sanitizer, our waiter also did the same thing... I don't know if the bathroom has a sink or not. This naturally concerned me. I would not come back nor recommend it for any one. The cost is pretty pricey considering what you're getting and where they are actually located. There are plenty of other seafood restaurants nearby that are much nicer, taste better, and are a little more cost effective. read more

My BF and I ordered the seafood combo and turned out the crab meat is fake and the lobster legs are really not fresh and even smelly. What's worse, after dinner, when I go back to hotel, I start to have allergy. It is the worst memory in Cancún. read more

The first time when we tried to go to Calypso's, there was a wait time of 10 minutes so we decided to go to Taco Rigos next door. But we came back the next day to Calypso. It is a small restaurant that delivers well made local food. Quesadillas, filet of fish, tacos, fajitas are all equally good. We had a mango margarita and it was well prepared and good. The atmosphere is quite comfortable and the host Filepe is very friendly. Price/value is excellent for the Cancun hotel zone. Highly recommended especially if you are staying nearby. read more

Friendly staff, quiet and comfortable location on the north side of the hotel zone, just minutes from where the night life is, but without all the craziness. Great food and good prices as well. Cash only here: I never knew why my mother loved Mexican food so much, but now I know it's because of restaurants like this!! The drinks are fresh, made with freshly squeezed ingredients. The food is authentic and melt in your mouth good. Honestly we came back two nights in a row, that's how good it was. It a bit of a hole in the wall but those are the best places! For an out of the way place, you couldn't find a better restaurant. Very small place. Drinks are good, portions large, and price is right after being to so many restaurants and meals were so expensive. My husband and I both had the lobster and shrimp.:$400 pecos or $25 US. It came with 2 grilled lobster tails, 6 grilled shrimp, veggies and baked potato. OMG good. Try this place out if u can find it. read more

A bit disappointed. I arrived expecting pretty great food based off the Yelp reviews and it fell short. To start I ordered the calamari and it is not like what I saw in a Yelp pic. It's now tempura battered, which is fine if it wasn't on a bed of lettuce and a humid night. Half I finished while it was still a little crispy. The rest got soggy. The main course was snapper with garlic oil. Pretty sure it wasn't snapper based off how thin the fillet was and it also seemed frozen then thawed. Didn't have a fresh fish texture so I ate about half and gave up. 2 stars for good service and the mango margarita. read more

Terrible food and long wait, even there's no other customers. We ordered a beef steak and tacos. Steak was excessively salty, bean stew tasteless. I asked if they could give me more rice, they said it would cost another 44pesos. Chicken taco is OK, but only a mouthful portion. Price is American. Avoid it! read more
