My desktop computer died two weeks ago. She was getting old. I think it was 1917 (woops! 2017; I'm getting old.) when I purchased her and some of her parts were failing. I sat down at the computer, pushed the power button and nothing happened. I mean NOTHING happened! So I went to Cal Tech to let "tech support" look at it. (my grandson is no longer available.) Mason advised I just replace my tower, so I took myself and my credit card to Best Buy where I purchased a lenovo computer CPU that looks like a tiny spaceship. I took the new "little guy" and the tower of the old computer back to Cal Tech. Mason efficiently moved my data to the "little guy", and did so at a reasonable price. I have since then dealt with Ethan, Matt, and Brent, the owner, who answered the phone on a Saturday! All of them have been considerate and clear in their explanations. I love these guys. Brought an aging HP windows laptop to them with a failed intel "optane" EMMC drive. (These have since been discontinued because apparently they were a Bad Idea and failed with alarming regularity.) I did not know that prior to my visit to Caltec. They ran a bunch of tests, diagnosed the drive as the problem, removed the drive, tried to recover data, and were unable to do so. They pointed me at DriveSavers, made a few very helpful recommendations, and refused my efforts to compensate them "because they were unable to fix my problem." read more

We're both senior citizens, but think we're still cool. we could not figure out how to resolve this issue. So, we visited Caltec and they resolved this in no time. Wow! I hate to be the first to leave a less than stellar review, but unfortunately we had only a mediocre experience. A diagnostic costs $75 and you pay more if they find out what it is and can fix it. (They did tell us all this up front so we knew what we were getting.) Unfortunately for us, they called us a couple days after we brought it in and told us they couldn't figure it out. They also called us earlier in the process to ask us if they could do a fresh install of Windows to see if it'd help, but warned us that it would cost us extra to restore the files afterwards ( $100+ ). Fortunately for us, we had backed up anything important so we told them it was fine to just wipe the whole PC and see if it'd be help (even though we had done this before and it didn't help then either). When we went to pick up the not-fixed PC, they did give us a heads up on how to restore things back to how they were before we sent it in at least. But was hoping that the price we paid to diagnose the issue would actually give us some kind of diagnosis about what was wrong with the computer (but we walked out with no additional info about our computer or the issue / next steps on how to fix it). An added note: when we first came in, the guy was really nice to us but was making snide comments (to us!) about someone he was helping over the phone and called them paranoid. Kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I couldn't help but wonder if he'd say bad things about us as well when we weren't around. read more

CalTec Computers is THE PLACE to refer your parents to if they need help with their computer and they live in San Luis Obispo! How many of you are tech support for your parents or other members of your family? CalTec came to the rescue for my parents' Mac. Living near LA, there was very little that I could do to help my parents in San Luis Obispo. Especially since I don't know anything about Macs, as I am a PC person. I found CalTec on Yelp! and was attracted by their ratings and reviews. CalTec fixed my parents Mac, upgrading the system, updating applications and drivers. My parents are aged 75-plus and can never seem to remember passwords - machine password, Apple ID, Microsoft Outlook password, etc. CalTec made a cheat sheet of all the passwords for my parents. Mike from CalTec sat with my mother until she understood all the new features and how to log into her e-mail. My Mom said that he was very patient and polite. When my Mom was having problems a couple days later, she called CalTec and J.J. connected remotely. He spent about a 1/2 hour teaching her how to access her applications. I chose this IT service because of the yelp reviews. Many have had good experiences here, I did not. I brought in my device to be diagnosed and told them what was likely the problem. They disregarded my information, called me with an incorrect diagnosis and kept my computer 2 days longer than they claimed before giving the correct diagnosis. Charged me $60 for that, quoted me $150 in parts to fix it and an hour's labor ($200ish/hr). On top of that, they tried to return my computer to me with parts outside of the case, telling me it would be easy to reassemble. The part I needed cost me $70 and I installed it myself in under 10 minutes. Maybe I got unlucky, but do your own research first. If I hadn't, I would have paid $60 for an incorrect diagnosis and much, much, more for the wrong, overpriced 'repair'. read more

I recently went to Caltec for the second time and once again had a great experience. I was helped by the same guy (I think his name is Brent?) and felt very taken care of. I had spilled coffee all over the keyboard of my laptop and was worried that I would have to buy a new computer. There ended up being coffee literally everywhere inside of my computer.. At first he told me that I should probably start shopping for new laptop, but after taking my whole laptop apart and thoroughly cleaning it TWICE to remove the coffee, he found that all I needed was a new keyboard. Luckily for me, he happened to have a junk laptop with the exact keyboard I needed. He replaced the keyboard and made sure everything was working properly. He put a lot of time into my laptop and gave me a great deal. I would highly recommend Caltec to any of my friends that were having computer problems. Cal-Tec Computers is fantastic! They helped me with a PC-to-iMac migration issue that saved my lifetime's worth of music files. It was something that the folks at the Apple Genius Bar caused (after assuring me that "all" of my data would seamlessly transfer from my personal computer to my new iMac desktop computer), and then could not figure out how to fix. Joey at Cal-Tec helped me through the entire process of retrieving and backing up the music (and other missing) files from the very old PC to a backup drive that could be used to migrate my full music library (not just the iTunes purchases) into the iMac and, ultimately, the new iPhone Apple was compelled to give me when they broke my previous iPhone while attempting a routine new battery installation. I will be forever grateful to Joey and Cal-Tec for competently, professionally and courteously giving me back the "soundtrack of my life." read more

I have used Caltec for nearly ten years and they are always super professional, courteous, intelligent, kind and full of insights. They have recovered data for me several times, helped me transition between computers while I was on a budget, installed a solid state hard drive that added an easy two years of life to my older laptop, and solved many more problems both remotely and in person. I recently recommended them to my older aunt who lives in Pasadena and who had spent hundreds of dollars in frustrating non-results with experts in her area - Brent was able to fix her clogged start menu, annoying ad proliferation ,etc etc in a few days and for $40 - needless to say, she swears she will never go anywhere else. Caltech Computers seems like a good place and I'll try them again with a computer issue. However, they couldn't fix my problem, so I had to send my computer back to the manufacturer. I don't blame Caltech for not being able to fix my computer. I know it was a difficult issue. The problem is that they never called me to tell me they can't fix it and ask me to pick it up. So, I waited a week and called them. They said they'd look into it and eventually called me to say they can't fix it. It was the waiting and lack of communication that caused me to give them only 4 stars. read more

Very good at what they do. They were able to resolve several issues for me: 1) Wifi not working 2) Computer utilizing only 2/3 of available RAM 3) Removed viruses (computer is ~4.5 years old and no longer has manufacturer support) However I did have a few mishaps. As a disclaimer, I am not an expert, but I am an engineering student: 1) Staff installed malware bytes premium on my computer when it lacked the resources to run it. I was slightly peeved since I thought my computer was still infected (I had to bring it back for them to remove the software, I imagine it took a while...). Once the program was removed the ~8min boot up time became ~5s. All in all, it was annoying, but it was done with good intentions, though I wish they booted up the computer after to check that it ran well with the software they installed... 2) I was told my hard-drive is failing, but after I got the computer back I ran my own defragging program and disk check software. The final results showed that I had a grand total of 8 ERRORS in the LIFETIME of the hard drive (they might have seen a different number). That's 8 out of several billion read/write cycles (trillion?). This is pretty far from a failing hard drive considering there are some that will run with 13,000 errors. To be fair to them, the disk was 10% fragmented with 12% dump files, so maybe "failing" meant "experienced typical wear and tear"? I'll update the review if I got this wrong. 3) Receiving the computer back with the battery drained. I didn't complain about this when I got the computer back both times, but it should be charged so I can check that it will actually start up before I pay. Come on... Altogether, the staff there is fairly competent. I'm not going to deduct too much for dealing with a computer that has a tweaked OS 3 generations old and a CPU 4 generations old. Though they do know their own value as among the best in San Luis Obispo and their rate reflects that. My reason for giving a 3-star review is because I know there are people out there that can do it right for 1/3 the price ($60) and 1/5 the time (2 business days), but currently they are a 4-hour drive away or work in their mom's basement. I am still going to recommend them since they are a professional service. read more

I took my computer in when it wouldn't fire up. Took them just a few hours to diagnose it. They told me the mother board had died and that they don't do motherboard replacements because it requires soldering (it did not). I got the computer back and replaced the motherboard myself, took all of 20 minutes. I found that one of the screws on the bottom of the computer was missing and 2 other ones had been stripped (the computer had never been taken apart before). read more

I lost internet connection on my Lenovo laptop suddenly. Tried all standard solutions I knew of but needed immediate attention since we were traveling. I expected to have to wait or leave the computer however, the technician looked at it immediately, and discovered my problem in seconds! A barely visible switch on the edge of the computer had somehow been turned off. Due to their expertise, I was in and out in minutes. He waived their standard fee, since it was so quick and simple. Had a problem with my computer not booting. Brought it down and had them take a look since I didn't have the extra parts needed to find the cause of the problem myself. The diagnosis took a little longer than I would've liked however, this was due to them ordering a specific part just to test on my computer. The good the part was that I was not charged any money out of pocket - but I did lose over a week of time, had to make several calls to get basic updates, and ended up doing a lot of damage control to salvage an important client relationship. I had a liquid spill on my laptop keyboard. I was told the repair would be a keyboard replacement and would take 3 days at the most to complete - an update I passed to my client. 3 days came and went with no calls from CalTec. The part delivery ended up taking at least a week. When it did arrive, the keyboard replacement turned out to be a misdiagnosis and a big waste of time. After looking more carefully, I'm disconcerted about all the filtered 5-star reviews here, I probably should have checked more carefully and I won't be returning. read more
