I was recently given a pass for range time to come in and check out the shop. I spoke to the person that gave me the pass specifically about hours of operation so she wrote them on the back of the pass. 10-7pm. I checked online before driving over and it showed open until 7pm. When I arrived at the shop at 5:55pm there was a printed sign on the door saying the "summer" hours are 10-6pm. This is not the first time I've had issues with the hours at this shop. I will not be returning to this shop. read more

I was looking at the mags for 2 seconds and the guy immediately starts staring at me and walks over to me and says "hey let's look at those together" I did not ask him for help I felt like he thought I was stealing The woman is very rude and not at all helpful they don't give a damn about helping people get better its all about the money $$$. I used to think this place might not be the typical gun shop with arrogant, minimally informed low level personnel. Well, we went to use the range, filled out all necessary forms and hear how they're running things. So, this big...so and so...interupted my buddy's friendly chatter and threatened to ask him to leave. Huh!? Because he thought we didn't hear the rules. Huh!? I look at the big, unhappy, unfriendly clerk who escalated a non incident "1" to a threatening "8" in one and a half seconds. My buddy, being a skilled law enforcement professional in his past, simply played it off as one might an obnoxious drunk. However, we're customers. We were following rules. We were amiable and easy going. Was he drunk? Was he emotionally unstable? He certainly was rude, at best. I, not being as nice as my buddy, told the clerk he was rude and escalation was unwise and bad business. After shooting there (NEVER AGAIN) we drove directly to Alquist Arms in Turlock and made firearms purchase. I've never been greeted with anything less than a cheerful, helpful, patient and knowledgeable service at Alquist. I cannot say that of California Shooting Sports in Modesto. Sad. read more

It's not good enough to have a gun, you have to shoot it regularly if you expect to be effective in an emergency (ie; the only time you'll need it). I find the staff to be knowledgeable and helpful, they go the extra mile. I've had a jam or two that I couldn't clear. I left the gun in the range and came out to staff to ask for assistance. He fixed the jam without judgement (yes, I was embarrassed). Safety at a shooting range is the number ONE priority. CSS enforces/educates all safety rules. Great people. Great facilities. Wow, where do I start. My wife and i purchased his and her Beretta guns. And of course safety in mind signed up for a basic introduction to hand gun class. Outstanding, from the moment we walked into the class to 2.5 hours later having shot on the range. Trevor and Don outstanding instructors. Their expertise, and knowledge of the guns is impeccable. A few years ago, I think, I took an NRA handgun class, just to get familiar with handguns, as I had little experience at all. The last bit of the class included a short shooting experience at California Shooting Sports where we students were treated nicely. Probably a year ago now, my husband and I got to, with guests who are local business owners and others who live in the Del Rio community, visit for what turned out to be a couple hour, comprehensive explanation and lesson, that included some of the philosophy of CSS owner. He and his staff left a big impression on me then as he shared a story about talking a woman into not purchasing a firearm after she'd been badly scared by an aggressive, and surely dangerous, mentally ill person while she was in the drive thru line at a Starbucks. At this meeting, if I understood right, I believe Tyler told us that his goal is primarily memberships so that ppl learn to use/shoot their own firearms well. I think what he said is that you get good at what you practice on! Recently, I attended a Ladies Night class after seeing an invite on fb, and had a splendid time! There I learned that The Well Armed Woman group meets there once a month and the annual membership fee is only $50! I visited once to see what these girls are about, loved it, and joined this month of May thanks to my daughters for that Mother's Day gift! Julie Jean leads it and works at CSS, and she is nothing less than FABULOUS! Please do go and meet her! The night I joined, I invited a friend for a visit, and she also joined, and shot a firearm for her first time ever, under the good care of Julie Jean and Tyler I assume. Once one has a TWAW membership, Tyler offers an incredible discount on a CSS membership! I took that opportunity too! Husband and I have used the range twice now together, and as we were heading out, Julie told us how Tyler lets a household member sign up for membership for an incredible price, so now husband is also a member! I know this is too many word, but I'm not including everything I've experienced that overwhelms and impresses me about this great place! **The two things that stand out the most to me are these: 1. Tyler is LOADED with firearm knowledge! 2. If I understand right about his philosophy, to get ppl shooting so they are proficient in the firearm they own, EVERY THING I see him do and say supports that cause, including, but not limited to great generosity!** Aside from how amazing the ppl and facility are, I decided this would be my place, because I knew that it's convenient location would mean that I will actually utilize it! It's where the New fitness place is going in, and near Western Dental, Starbucks. They opened up in November. They have a great selection of rental weapons. Don't have a lot o weapons in stock for purchase as yet. I'm sure they will in time. The shooting range is 15 yards mad will take up to .44mag rounds and some rifle rounds although it is primarily only for hand guns. The cost is $20.00 for the lane. They went out of their way to make sure all participants were following safety rules as well as becoming better and more importantly,SAFER shooters than before class. This is the best place to go shooting in the area. Very good customer service., especially with beginners. Very clean and comfortable shop with tons of accesories to buy, including an assortment of guns to buy or rent I went in today and one of the members shooting next to me took my loader( most likely by accident) When I asked the staff if anyone turned it in they said no. Next thing you know there coming up to me in the range and say here you go man its on the house, Im sure the person that took yours will return it and hand me a brand new loader. Very clean, very SAFE indoor range. In fact, I was so impressed the first time I shot here, that I bought a membership the same day. Since, I've been back multiple times and don't have a single complaint. The staff has been helpful every time I've been to visit. They have somewhere around 30 handguns available to rent, and their ammo prices are decent should you need to buy range ammo. Happy to have a place like this so close to home. I recently went for the first time to this range, only my second time to one and second time handling a gun. I liked the selection of handguns available to rent but was surprised how they just hand it over when you're renting, they did not offer to go over it with me at all. You would think that most customers who are renting don't have one and thus have less experience. Also you pay at the end, just a heads up. Oh and maybe I was a little excited to shoot again but I didn't notice any prices posted of ammo, etc. I think it was like $18 per 50 ct case for the rental. The range was fine I guess, clean, maybe a little crowded but then again I don't have much experience in ranges. The main reason for the bad rating was the lack of customer service! Seriously...Show some interest in your customers especially in such an intimidating environment to begin with. The place did not feel welcoming at all, after I had my fill of shooting I obviously began looking at the handguns available for sale (I was not approached) I asked to see one and the oldest associate there handed it to me and simply said "just keep it aimed at the wall" that's it! Lmao I hope I find a better gun range near Modesto, I'd rather drive further and spend my money somewhere else. Peace! read more

I did my CCW class at this range - First time I had been there - FIRST class and VERY honest people. I left a pair of very high end hearing protection there - called 4 days later when I realized I had left them, Talked to Mike who said Cory had found them and they were in the safe waiting for the owner to call - I thank you for your Honesty. I am BLOWN AWAY by the high marks! Customer service isn't awful but not one person there seems enthused. The store is small but they have a nice variety of ammo and pricing isn't bad. The reason I will never return is the range!!! It is the loudest, most congested, cramped, and narrow range I've ever seen. Lighting is poor and lane division is AWFUL! You will get hit by a few expelled casings at most ranges as a spectator or as pair sharing a lane, but I have never been hit in the face, arms, hands, or have had spent shells land on my gun case and lane table!!! Lane dividers are not long enough and lack of space forces shooters to extend arms out beyond them - STUPID and DANGEROUS! Having your firearm LOADED unlocked and uncased is also something to consider when traveling to and from the store, the parking lot and breezeway is a homeless camp. read more

It was our first time coming today. At first it seemed okay and me and my girlfriend felt a bit welcomed only because the guy who helped us was new. Me and my girlfriend usually go to Manteca Outdoor range so we had our Steel practice ammo. Anyways we signed and agreed to the agreements they had and they were suppose to check our gun and ammo but didn't so we thought it was okay to enter the range. We even let them know it was our first time going to that place. After shooting one magazine with our steel bullets, one of the employee rudely interrupted our shooting and took our target and told us we're not suppose to use steel bullets in a indoor range and also told us that the target we put on had to be below the black line as if we knew the rules. We told them it was our first time and we didn't know. We decided to leave because we didn't want to buy their 18 dollar ammo and the guy hesitated to let us leave for free as if it was our fault that we brought steel bullets. The place looked like it would of been fun but it felt like the guy kicked us out. Anyways I probably wouldn't come back to this place. Think I'd rather stick to outdoor ranges. read more

My husband and I took the "Introduction to Handgun" class at California Shooting Sports. Having never shot a gun before, I was pretty (really) nervous going into the class. Tyler and Julie did a great job going over all the important safety rules and basics on how to shoot before going into the range. It was obvious they are both passionate about educating others about gun safety and proper use. Before we got to shoot on our own, Tyler and Julie helped us set up and watched each of us shoot individually, which was comforting! Throughout our time shooting, they walked around giving us tips and reminders. Overall a great experience. I think I'll be back just for fun and definitely less nervous! :-) Thanks guys! read more

We did a family outing and took the handgun safety course they offer. My wife, 19 yr old daughter and 12 year old daughter all took the class together. The class taught us how to handle a handgun and how to be safe. The 1:1 instruction on the range helped us learn how to fire live rounds and get over the anxiety of holding a gun. The instructors are engaged and knowledgeable. I recommend taking this class, especially if you haven't been around guns...and an absolute necessity if you want to own a gun. read more

Prepare for a long review: I tried really hard to like this place, but long story short, it's a problem with the staff that killed the mood for me... First off, they look at you as if you're trying to steal something; at this point I was looking at some Magpul furniture for my AR. Not a single minute passed before everybody behind the counter was looking over their shoulder, not once asking if I needed help finding something, which I did. Anyway, no big deal, right? Just watching out for their business. I was in looking for a bolt-action rifle that day (specifically a Remi 700 or a Savage Model 10), and it was only until I asked for help that they decided to help. I had been in multiple stores that day, comparing prices, and was leaning more towards the Savage. All of the other stores had them, but as I said I was just comparing prices to see who had the best deal. California Shooting Sports didn't have the particular model in-store, but they pulled it up on their computer. Great, right? Not really. On Savage's website, the particular Model 10 I was interested in was under the "Law Enforcement" series, which is just a different stock, a 10 round magazine, and different barrel style, and keep in mind all of the other stores had this one in-store and was ready to sell it to me. Here we go with the part that killed the experience for me. I asked the man behind the counter if he could acquire this for me, and he asked if I was an LEO, and of course I'm not. And because I'm not Law Enforcement, I can't own that rifle. I asked why, he said it's because it has a threaded barrel, and it has a detachable magazine without...wait for it... a bullet button, something that I told him isn't even required on a BOLT ACTION, NON SEMI-AUTO rifle. I also stated how rifles with barrels over 16" can have a threaded barrel. What does he say? Something along the lines of, "Look dude, I sell guns for a living so I know the laws better than you, and I'm telling you that you can't have this gun if you're not law enforcement," then closes the window on the computer. I was going to ask if he could check out the Remi 700, but before I got to finish my question, he cuts me off and says "You.. CANNOT.. own.. it," and walks away from me and goes on to talk to his coworkers. One man (who's name I didn't get but I'll call Billy just for this review) asked if I still had questions about something and looked like he legitimately wanted to help. I said I did, and again the other guy told him, "He's trying to buy something that is only for law enforcement, and he's not law enforcement." Then Billy asked to help me out with that, and sure why not. Instead of going over everything we did (pretty much the same as above without all of the attitude and cockiness,) let's just say that he corroborated everything I had told the other guy and that I was indeed allowed to own that gun. Now here's the funny part, they could've sold it to me for about $50 cheaper than the rest, and asked if I wanted them to order it from their supplier, but unfortunately the other fella killed the mood for me. Needless to say, I took my business elsewhere. 2 stars just because of Billy's willingness to help out customers, and their decent indoor range. read more

I decided to come here after I bought a groupon since I've been meaning to go to a shooting range. I ended up coming here on valentine's day and there was a wait. I ended up sharing 2 cartridges of ammo and the gun with my boyfriend at the range. Everyone was very professional and it was first time in a shooting range so I ended up getting ear plugs and ear muffs so it wouldn't be so loud. The guy who rented us the equipment gave us a quick run down on how things worked and my boyfriend provided the rest of the information since I had no idea how to shoot a hand gun. Wanting to try something different we ended up here! I found a Groupon for $25 for 2 people that includes admission, rental of gun & safety gear. Ammo prices vary from what type of gun you rent. We rent two different 9 MM & ammo was $17. 99 each plus tax. You can only rent one weapon per lane. If you come as a group you'll have to share a line. It gets crowded it's quite small, but it was manageable. They'll show you a quick over view of gun handling other than that you're on your own. Which was good they don't baby you, but yet i was still nervous because I've never really shot one before. Thank god my husband was there lol. We went on saturday around 4pm & it wasnt too busy. We had to wait maybe 15 mins for our turn but there are sofas to sit and wait or you can watch other clients shoot through the glass. The staff was nowhere near rude as some have mention. Accommodating and knew exactly how to use Groupon! The only ehhhh complaint I had was there were ammo all over the floor. Everyone was stumbling all over them. If you want it out the way, you sweep it yourself with the broom they have in the room. Lol. For what we paid for and what the value of everything was I think we got a deal! Didn't seem too pricey for me as what some may have mention as well. Great store and awesome products, but I don't get it.. the customer service is the worst. This is the truth with the majority of gun stores I go into, so I don't take it personally.. but whoever is behind the counter always acts like you're there to steal something. No one asks if you want help, want to look at something or anything. The worst thing is that if they ever read this, chances are that they will completely dismiss it believing it is only my skewed opinion. Until customer service becomes a priority at gun stores (including this one), new customers are going to walk in once and never return. This is a cool store, with what looks like an awesome indoor range, but if I'm going to make a big purchase, I'll probably go somewhere else. read more

Went two days ago with my son who just got his own 22 rifle and we didn't have time to head out to BLM land where we'd normally shoot. The staff was very friendly and polite (so the talk the owner had a few months back is working). No one was sitting around, and one staff was helping someone else and the second staff saw to us right away. The only complaint was that the ventilation didn't keep up with all 5 lanes in use. My lane plus two others had a pair of shooters in them. I know at my lane we were constantly shooting, and as soon as my son was done I'd either be shooting my 9mm or trying his 22 rifle. I believe the other lanes were busy the whole time much the same - so this was pretty much a peak hour for usage of that range area. After 30 minutes, I'd noticed it was really getting hot and muggy. After an hour we had to leave because we just couldn't handle it any longer (and it was just down to two other single lane shooters who started after us). If it wasn't for the ventilation issue, I'd give it a 5 star. Again, regarding the staff, they were great. After we'd finished shooting and I was settling up, my 13 year old son had a ton of questions (some of them very ... uhm, clueless question, but ya know, he's 13), but they were patient and answered all of them. read more

I am a new gun owner, (purchased at CSS) and used their range today for the first time along with a friend who is also new to shooting. They were very helpful, explained everything in simple terms and didn't treat us ladies like some men do...as if women should not be allowed near firearms. They are very quick to help when there is a problem on the range. I had a 5.1.5. malfunction (operator error) and they explained what happened and taught me how to clear the malfunction. I had no problems whatsoever with bad ventilation. It was very clean and comfortable and most of the lanes were being used, so if there is a ventilation problem...it was not noticeable to me at all. My friend was able to try several different guns with one rental fee so that she could make a final decision on what gun to purchase. Overall, a great experience. I'm actually giving this place 3.5 star. I would have given it more but not too happy about all the empty shells being all over the floor to where they even start getting into the area where u shoot. It becomes annoying when you start stepping on 'em. They should really take time every now & then to clean the area. There equipment & setup I give 5 stars. They work really well. I will come back & recommend. Hope next time the range area is a little cleaner of empty brasses. Most of the indoor range in our area I.e., Barnwood is pretty well kept. read more
